A free lesson to be learned

The Bhoys scored four goals to progress in the League Cup, kept a clean sheet, handed out two debuts, and got minutes into the legs of the maximum 16 on Saturday evening.
A good day at the office you would imagine?
Well, its complicated.

&nbsp,

I didn’t like the teamsheet but I could rationale the decisions made. On a pristine surface on a sunny evening the ref blew his whistle and it was underway.
Celtic then produced as poor a start as I can recall. I was asking when are we going to get into this match after 5 minutes, by ten minutes I was concerned, by 20 I was genuinely worried and by 25 I just wanted to hold on until the gaffer makes halftime subs and tweaks.

To me, the problem was obvious, the energy or legs was missing from the team. Calmac and the OX are the opposite of legs, throw in the energy and legs of KT and AJ being missing and there was virtually no thrust in the team, no quick options on the ball to avoid their press, and no tactical tweak to address our clearly getting overrun.

But around the half-hour mark what’d yah know. The words “Celtic score from a setpiece” are rarely seen on these pages. On our first corner I said to myself Aha, we clearly saw the biggest four bunch together then peel off into different zones, almost a staple move in the NFL. Benji therefore has four zones to target, he opts for the front post and big Trusty who has earned my trust flicks it in and he made it look easy. The corner itself was top notch and the finish was excellent. Ross Grant makes his mark three competitive games in, chapeau. Good luck fixing our throw-ins, shockingly bad.

Twas only a few minutes and we went two ahead. They tried to keep turning the screw, but got caught and we burst upfield with intent. There was a bit of a stramash in the box as the defender marking Nygren created a loose ball in the 6 yard box. Duran doesn’t need a second invitation and gets it in the back of the net from close range.

Despite this I actually thought they galvanized and edged the rest of the half. They had hit the bar twice, we had scored twice. Their press was crushing us and the starters weren’t cutting it. Even still I expect Midas to wield his touch but no. They started the second better just like the first, one of the oldest tricks in the book, get ’em from kickoff.

Yet low and behold it happens again, two goals against the run of play. They had nothing to lose and we were not playing well, but they overcommitted and our attack had them backtracking towards goal. Tonekti saw an opening between a defenders legs and even though he didnt really get his foot through the ball it trundled in beyond the ‘keepers reach and we were 3 goals to the good which sparked the changes to keep certain players more fresh for the big game on Wednesday. Completely understandable and I’m in full agreement.

One of those players was Mika Baur. While he almost re-enacted a Henke/Chic Charnley moment it was Baur who won the ball then fed it to Tonetki to assemble the 4th goal, another Benji special.
I was keeping my eye on Baur and like everything I saw, good position, good tackling, good passing apart from one oopsie, I thought the midfield was better when he came on and formed a double pivot but one who would look to pass forward.

It ultimately came down to levels, our multi million men finished better and thats why they are in the big leagues, but if we produced that performance in the big leagues those big league players would heavily punish us. We had 20m up front, I doubt they had 5m on the park yet were forced into counter attacks to win the game.
Conclusion,,,never play that midfield 3 again. At one point I saw Nygren in our box, CCV was forced to carry the ball into their half in order to create something, anything.
If I was the LASK manager I would feel a bit better BUT,,,

 ^

If I know todays midfield was unacceptable then Martin and Shaun know. My point is, after watching us get outplayed but outscoring them, buy that box to box Arne replacement and choose the one with the biggest cajones because he needs to play on Wednesday. I would choose the one who has made it through the cut that can play right here, right now, and get him straight into that team.

Hogh got zero service, I pitied him today because there were no overlapping fullbacks fling in passes or crosses.
Tonetki walks away with a standing ovation and a goal plus an assist to his name. As I watched him I was thinking to myself he cannot cross a ball for shit, he doesn’t beat a man, his shots are usually poor, he doesn’t score,,,,we need better. I do believe we could do much better but I’m grateful he made a big contribution today and in fairness he doesn’t hide.

Hassan didn’t do much, ah well, but Ill be judging over seasons not hours. Baur had the better debut.
I like the fact we spread the minutes around the squad but “that” needs backup. Like yesterday. Ox to kill games off, Baur will replace him on Wednesday but have a DM on the bench if not in the team.

The Gvidas Gineitis story has more turns than a Formula 1 track

didnt play in Torino’s final preseason game.leading to speculation that a deal was imminent.

but then he played the full 90 minutes of Torino’s opening Seria A game. In that game, he completed 40 of 46 passes, including 8 in the final third. Won 7 of 9 taclkles, including both aerial duels, and was not beaten on the ground.

sounds like the type of player Celtic need if they want to make some mark in Europe

The Souness era was certainly a shake up for Scottish football. Unfortunately, the shake up had the reverse effect, whereby one team got stronger ( especially under Murray 90-97) , whilst others , including Celtic, Hibs, Aberdeen and Dundee Utd, withered on the vine , trying to compete within the rules.
Others, who played by the blue pound, seemed to do quite well in that period by comparison, Hearts, Kilmarnock and Dunfermline – for example. Strangely, as Rangers went bust , financial difficulties and even administration followed for these clubs also.
It was, in all, a total disaster for the Scottish game, the legacy still being felt 40 yrs on.

============= .
In cheating, and thats what it was murrays tenure was corrupt and corrosive on Scottish football. He farmed the supremacist hun beautifully, never asked what he was doing as the wood(debt) piled on the liquidation fire,
Murray the day he took over had 55 ‘paper'(valueless)companies 1 had £5m courtesy of GavinMasterton at Bank of Scotland,he acted as banker to all Scottish clubs,A big reason adding to Fergus already being unhappy.

We gotta ask what has changed, rule wise within our governing body to ensure it dont happen again?….me neither,oh no papped outa league and invited in to div4 won’t happen they go down 1 division

BAD

My first game was slightly post-Lisbon in October 67. I was a 4yo kid, and just so excited at the dayooooot aspect of it all that I couldn’t really take in the football side. That changed as I got older, in tandem with me going more often.

I’d seen many momentous performances by the time I approached my 16th birthday, but I must admit that my early teens were a barren time for us bar the double in 77. Then along came 21-5-79, and I honestly thought it disnae get better than this!

I was wrong, of course. It frequently did. And yes, that includes the night that Johnny Doyle belied his stature and grew ten feet tall against Real Madrid! It was probably his proudest moment outside of his family, but he was with his family that night, that’s for sure.

My Dad knows how grateful I was and am for taking me to the games when I was a kid, and I’m fortunate that he is still around to watch them with when I go back home. On top of that, we’ve had some great times away from home in Europe-though not so great results! I’m pretty sure your Dad knew how grateful you were too, even if neither of us put it in so many words at the time.

They should’ve served their minimum three year penance in the semi-pros when they went bust. Bet your bottom dollar we would have been forced to do that-if we were even allowed to play football at all.

BAD,
Emenalo is your LB cover, your RB cover, and DM cover. Makes sense all around. His dad is in football and works for Chelsea, I like to think he helped get us the nod.
Would prefer Emenalo and Genetis but Emenalo and Mahmic will do, the latter on the left wing while Benji is with us, then his replacement when he earns us a fortune.

“Emenalo is your LB cover, your RB cover, and DM cover.”
————————-
He’s also cover for CH, so is ideal. If he is not injured, I would be tempted to toss him in at the center of midfield to plug a major hole you can see from space. He played 3 games for the Chelsea first team in pre-season, and is really highly thought of by a club that has spent £977M in the transfer market in 5 years.

Young kids, some only 15 years old, are being tossed into major games by clubs all over the world, including Real Madrid, Barca, Arsenal and Liverpool. For DM, I think it would be a better bet than any 1 of our limited selection of smurfs from McGregor, Baur, McCowan or Hatate.

MIT,
Good, that’s Hatton and Monty hopefully playing but if the latter only manages about six games next year through injury we should cut our losses. Not sure he has the frame for it tbh.

Encouraged by Emenalo, a standout in the reserve EPL which is better than the SPL, wand of a left foot and so calm on the pitch like Virgil. He brings a lot to the table.
Normally I would say we might break the club record etc but the talk is he’s not far from the breakthrough and this year will polish him and (given his da is important at Chelsea) he will be given a shot there IF he shines and the CL is certainly one place to shine.

Now that made me think. These playes of quality why are they joining? Baur said he phoned Kuhn and he said ‘you’ve gotta experience that, you won’t believe it, just do it!’.
Hassan said the long standing interest including a Zoom with the manager in January started his fact finding mission and he liked what he saw and liked the manager, and liked the fact he was wanted.
Kasper said he was ready for a new chapter and once Celtic came in that was that, ie he understood already we were a giant.
Duran wants Europe, a shot at the big leagues and the big bucks.

My point being everyone is different, the reasons to come are numerous, but I believe ultimately it’s the 62k stadium and the name Celtic that does the initial convincing that aye, I would join them. That’s underpinned by you, me, and the masses across the globe for creating a Cathedral of football that stuns even the experienced players.

You’re looking for a DM while we all carry the club on our back?
Can you use a new ad agency? Tell them to expedite the hire? 😉

Hail Hail

Mahe,

Ahh, I was thinking Mahmic and GK, but for absolutely no reason. I would love for you to be right. We are on the right road now pal, and no mistake.

Now take the reigns off of this squad and team, and get them all doing it had they’ve been doing since the beginning of the season – playing with smiles on their faces!

Mahmic looks magic, and the young Chelsea lad looks like he has bags of ability, but he’s yet to be tested in a man’s match, and he’d get that here.

If he’s insisting he needs to start, forget about him cause it ain’t hppnin.

We need a left back capable of stepping right in and playing to take some pressure of KT.
This boy from Chelsea has never played a senior game in his career. He will not be able to do that.
Just buy an experienced fullback. FFS

Mahe

if you buy a Formula 1 team, would you put a Ford Fiesta motor in the car?

Or buy a NFL team, and play your wide receiver as your QB?

Another CL qualifier is days away, and still no one in the middle of the park who can make a tackle, link defence and attack, or run an offence.

going into another CL qualifier without a decent number 6, let alone a good one, is negligent, at best.

The most important position on the team and the glaring hole hasnt been addressed in half a decade at least.

After years of the same problem, it gets hard to even view it as negligence.

St Tams,

That’s why I’m unsure.
All that skill with a ball doesn’t always transfer over to being able to perform in a real match against big bastards like Gogic ..we’ve had a few that proved that.
They can be a wizard with the ball, but ask them to do anything physical and it’s over

If you had any doubt about the pressure Tanny Rohl must be under, you need only look at how uncomfortable and miserable he looks .. although that might have something to do with the fact he’s wearing a vest, shirt and tie, sash, cardigan, waistcoat, jacket, overcoat and brand new brogues.

It’s the height of summer, Deeks..

Might be time to get the club tracksuit sent up Derek, before you spontaneously combust. They will tear you to shreds whether you have the wee blue cardigan on or not, pal.

We’re off to a poor start but it believe in you.
