Luck Of The Draw
Morning, all.
Just Another Saturday has been and gone, and left us with the prospect of a Beautiful Sunday. Yes, we negotiated a difficult trip to Tannadice-the venue for our last defeat five months ago-but our soo’side rivals managed to defeat the holders, in possibly the most miserable defence of a trophy ever, the following day.
Naturally, with every penny a prisoner over Ibrox way, they got a home draw. Again. Incredibly, given the outcome of the Scottish Cup tie in March, it is against us. Unbelievably, there is no 20% rule in this particular tournament, so we will be allocated what the huns tell Police Scotland to allow us.
I’ll be honest with you, I thoroughly enjoyed my trips to Ibrox in the 70s and 80s. We didn’t win them all, far from it. A New Year 3-1 defeat in Jock’s last season will always be one of my most bitter memories, with good reason. And I remember asking SOLKITTS why we were playing our mascot as a bleach bottle blonde started running around the pitch-just before he took out Davie Cooper with a tackle even I’d have been proud of. Peter Grant, that was. Mind you, we lost that day.
I remember too the classic when Davie Provan literally left a defender on his back gasping for air. My memory says Davie McKinnon, but recollections may differ. What doesn’t differ is him turning to the prone defender, having laid the ball off and saying:-
“I could keep a beach ba’ aff you in a telephone box!”
Little did he know that about twenty years later, the Celtic support would bring beach balls to Ibrox to commemorate that day!!
But I digress, this is all to say that I genuinely did enjoy my trips there. There wasn’t the sheer hatred then that there is now. Don’t get me wrong, if a couple of fans from the wrong side had found themselves in the wrong place, that would be different. But the animosity was a level below what there is now, in my personal opinion. Also in my personal opinion, it was stoked up during the Souness and Murray years and has never relented or gone away.
Dave King played to his audience by cutting our allocation from the time-honoured Celtic End of the Broamloan Stand to a tiny corner of 800 hardy souls. Seems he was shocked when we did the same to his supporters, but he was never the sharpest tool. There weren’t any regulations in the SPFL against this, another example of how backward our administrators are. However, those regulations exist in the SFA. And they came into play in March when we were drawn to play them at Ibrox in the cup.
The Hitler Youth element of the Ibrox support attacked the Broamloan that day, furious at a Timmy support celebrating in their midden. Flares and missiles launched, a stand-off with the police, hundreds if not thousands on the pitch.
And fewer arrests than from The Trongate two months later!
And as a result of that, it is the Celtic support-the victims, remember-who will suffer. We won’t have the security of numbers in a few weeks time, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see us billeted in our wee corner again. Suffice to say that you won’t see me there, not now. The pleasure of the occasion has long gone. No one should be attending a game of football in fear of what happens off the pitch.
^^^^^^
To on the pitch matters now, and I was discussing with my mates at the weekend how the fates have conspired against Scottish clubs in Europe this week. Our draw could have been better, but could certainly have been worse. But Hearts v Rapid Boohiss, Hibs v Gent and Motherwell v Freiburg, who were runners up in last season’s Europa League. Then you look at the likes of Larne v Lincoln Red Imps! I mean, who does the seeding for these tournaments?
Me being me with my love of a wind up, I suggested to my wee hun mate that it would make sense for his club to drop out of Europe entirely this season. The Conference is worth about £10m to them all in, including gate money, and it might be better for them to have a free week and concentrate on the league. Eyes on the prize of the CL money next year.
Especially, as I pointed out, that they can spend as much money in Scotland as they like. No FSR or similar up here. And the spending won’t arrive in the accounts until after they’re awarded a licence for next season.
Let’s face it, they’ve done it before…

We now have a new JustGiving page set up to enable donations to be made for our latest charity appeal.
We wanted to focus again on a local charity, and this time one which is dedicated to helping those suffering from homelessness, addiction or poverty.
The one we have gone for is

You can find our dedicated page at

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.
As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.
And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!
Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

Don’t think that I have experienced such a furore as I have witnessed at the end of last season, you could feel the hate and the hurt, their world was shattered, the rabid press should take most of the blame. Suddenly STV turned bright orange joining there partners at the BBC – Sky in the hate fest.
Is it just me that feels the anger and disappointment, a sense of betrayal at the BBC because they have changed from a once trusted broadcaster into just another ‘make up the truth organisation’.
I obtained my Irish citizenship this year, the passport and the EU card, just call me Al/ Mick. It was a great journey to be sure, but I learned so much about my Irish family the good and the bad and it was that partial sense of belonging as well as the journey that made me so glad that I took it. It also made me very proud of my Scottish roots ‘Haw see you Jimmy’, proud to be a Celtic supporter, a small part of the Celtic family. Mon the Hoops.

Thanks, mate.
As I said, recollections may differ. The number of times I’ve been told it wasn’t McKinnon, yet I can never get the correct answer hammered into my thick skull!

My forecast for the last 8 draw.
We will get another away game. Sevco will get another home draw, preferably against us. If sevco are drawn away it will be against stenhousemuir.
Above is a comment I posted before the draw was made. If I know what is happening then so do our board. This cheating has been going on forever. Over 40 years ago the late great Jimmy Sanderson used to predict draws and he was never wrong. In his own subtle way he was telling everyone that this was a pockle.
In the 1980’s we continued to get really tough draws in the league cup at the quarter final round. In 7 consecutive seasons we were drawn against Aberdeen and Dundee Utd 5 times when these clubs had top European teams. We were drawn against Hearts and Hibs and all seven games were away from home. We only won 2 of these ties. Rangers had a great record in this tournament, and no wonder. The objective was to get Celtic out to make it easier for Rangers. Rougvie was sent off in a final against Aberdeen and Sturrock had a perfectly good goal disallowed against Dundee Utd helping rangers win both games.
When Paul McStay was asked in a TV interview to explain Celtic’s poor recent record in the league cup he said that we keep getting tough draws. They knew they had been rumbled and so we got a home draw against Clydebank. We also received tough draws in the Scottish cup until Thatcher was asked to make the draw and we got Rangers at home.
This is another example of the brazen cheating we face year in year out and it is time that the club addressed this issue once and for all. Let them know they have been rumbled once more.
Provan and beach balls? My memory of that included Ally Dawson for some reason.
Angry Ally, who was also pish. It’s easy to get your Dawson’s mixed up with your Davie McKinnon’s or Gregor the dung beetle Stevens..

Stivs,
That’s Ally Dawson comeback day, eh? Was it 2-0 the Huns at HT? I think the referee, Valentine or McGinley?, Gave us a penalty that he made Charlie retake if I remember correctly. 83?? Keeper nearly kept it oot!
My main memory of that game was Ally losing his mind, and the Celtic fans showing the world, while behind at HT, what no surrender really looks like!

Isnt today the deadline for adding (two) players for tomorrow’s CL qualifier? If so, any news, rumors?
MIT,
Rumours of efforts to bring in a midfielder and a keeper. Frankly, these signings are too late by a country mile!
Can we expect a new defensive mid to a) be match fit for a CL game, b) be briefed on his role and team mates and c) have clearance…….all before kickoff tomorrow?
It is madness. Perhaps a keeper could be on the bench in case our #1 gets injured, but that should be the extent of it.
Once again, it is irrational gambling with circa 30 million in revenue…..21 of which would be available for transfers(70%).

Woke up this morning, checked the usual sources, and am now seriously disappointed that so far, we have not fortified our obvious weaknesses.
We have failed 7 times out of 9 at this very stage, and 5 times in a row, culminating in the Kairat fiasco. And yet here we are again, grossly unprepared. We have known the play off date for months, we lowball our own coaches, Nicholson and McKay swan off on holiday, we dispense with an obvious asset like Saracchi, we delay, dither, procrastinate, and we nickel and dime Paderborn for weeks. Failure tomorrow night will be as a result of irresponsible negligence on our part.
We knew Engels would go, yet we had no replacement ready to sign on the dotted line. And even if we had, it left zero time for him to train, to get to know his team mates, and understand what MON wanted in the tie. Losing Maeda, Engels, AJ, and Saracchi, we are now actually weaker in key positions than we were when we watched a lesser team than LASK completely dismantle Hearts 6-0. We have no depth in key positions. We could have met United’s release clause for Ferry as a more than capable KT backup.
( NABBLA, please note, I am advocating signing an Irish player 🤣 ), thus allowing flexibility for Emenalo to go into midfield.
We are a Sinisalo knock away from only having one keeper, Doohan. It has been an eternity since Kasper retired, yet Nicholson sat on his ass. It is just incomprehensible why a Board would not do everything possible to assist MON in reaching the CL Group stage.
Throwing players in just after they get off a plane is extremely risky, even if they have been playing regularly. Hassan is clearly not up to speed, so I assume will not be risked. In passing, I note that Sevco did exactly that with both Yakota and Penrice recently. They are probably more likely to sign players before the deadline than we are, despite the previous dozen or so. They have made bids to Brighton and Portland for forwards, and to Villa for a full back.
If we end up doing too little, too late, with a year to think about the Kairat shambles, it will be completely unforgivable in my view.
Rebus
biggest game of the season and always unprepared. Seems like it is the Same song and dance every season.
Dont know much about LASK, but even the team that beat the zombies … not spectacular, but with their passing and movement, their midfield would cut through Celtic’s, so can expect a tough game tomorrow. But Celtic make it so much tougher than it needs to be by not preparing properly
Sol Kitts,
Great photo.
The front row is mostly The East Kilbride Charlie Nicholas bhoys.
I can count 4 I know and bet Chalmersbhoy and DRM could name more.
I was up the back that day, probably near you and Bobby 🍀🍀
Leggy I think I can see 6 but can only name 4 of them. I was bit further back too.
Not on very much but while im on i just want to add the so called childish, I know more than u, discussion between Nabbla and ernie and the horrible comments from mags is what’s so wrong with this blog and why we have lost so many posters.
Get a grip and act like adults and be civil to fellow celtic supporters and human beings 😔
INIQ…….although I’m normally a happy clapper, I totally agree with your post. I can see difficulty getting the midfielder, but a goal keeper and left back (oh for Sarrachi) should definitely have been on board for this game.
Boaby,
10 goals / 8 assists.
Shurely shome mishtake?
Looks as if Scales will be replacing KT after 70/80 minutes tomorrow night.

That’s why I stated the source. It’s actually quite common for goals not to have an official assist. For instance, McCowan v Kilmarnock, where the last touch was off a defender. Or a penalty, direct free kick, etc.
We could always form our own version of a Dubious Goals Panel though!

Hi nabbla I was not demeaning the subject you were discussing it was the manner of the conversation.
Where you both think your points of view are correct and both of you belittling each other and name calling instead of a civil discussion.
This site especially over the last year has been a great help to me due to ill health and has posters being respectable to each other, posts enlightening myself on things I did not know about and incredible people nominating charities like chas and raising phenomenal amounts of money.
People like mags and your conversation todays should think about this before posting and if they cant post sensibly they dhould get at least barred until they realise their vile comments are not required on here.
Anyway will be good to read your interesting conversation without name calling.
I don’t see the LASK tie as a foregone conclusion. AJ , Engels, and Maeda played against Kairat. Engels being on the bench and only coming on in the last 20mins of the second tie.
All three of them were rank rotten. I reckon the squad were caught up in the Brendan – Board squabbles.
It’s different this time around. Less distance to travel for the away tie and more squad harmony pulling in the same direction for their manager with nobody’s eye on the exit door.
Schmeichel’s injury should not be glossed over. He’s responsible for Scotland qualifying for a world cup and denying us a treble. Sinisalo is a better keeper than Schmeichel was last season.
LASK are a good team. Nowhere near as good as Stuttgart VFB but if anyone can get us through this tie with what we’ve got it’s MON
I expect it to go to penalties in the second leg and I’d rather have Hogh and Duran taking them than want away Maeda and soon to be gone Idah. I also expect Sinisalo to save at least one and be far less Schmeichelesque during the games

LASK’s matches over the past two years (roughly 19 August 2024 to 18 August 2026),
Biggest stadium LASK have played in
The biggest-capacity stadium LASK have played in during that period is Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, capacity about 43,000.
They played there on 12 December 2024 against Fiorentina in the Conference League:
Fiorentina 7–0 LASK
Attendance: 9,211
Stadium capacity: 43,147
Competition: UEFA Conference League
UEFA’s official match report gives the attendance as 9,211.

The important point for Celtic
So Celtic Park is comfortably the biggest stadium LASK will have played in during this two-year period:
Celtic Park — capacity roughly 60,000+
And Wednesday’s match is likely to be by far the largest crowd LASK have experienced in that period. Their previous biggest actual attendance in a LASK match that I can find in the two-year window was 21,523 at FCSB, with Rapid Vienna reaching 21,300.
Looks like reserve keeper Gill will be on the bench. Celtic appear to have not known about the Ox suspension until very late, and with Engels and Bernardo out, Hatate not match fit or in the mood, our midfield is just bereft for the biggest game of the season. The bench tomorrow night will be lightweight at best.
INIQUITOUS IV
Tomorrow’s midfield scares the bejayzus out of me. I think Baur will start, whether he’s ready or not, out of sheer necessity.
Unprepared or deliberately unprepared?
With our history in Europe under Despot and the Lackeys it’s not hard to figure out!

It should be laughable to even suggest that… but given the history, it is not an unfair question.
How many time are they going to risk a $30 million CL pot for a million or two pound signing? They have to bring in at least one, if not two, mids this window, so why not one sooner to assist in the CL bid, and then the second can depend on if Celtic qualify for the CL? The Canadian might not be my first choice, but he’s cheap and would waltz into that team, would add something to the team that it is lacking and necessary, and could likely make the difference between Celtic’s midfield getting over run by LASK or not. Then if they get through, they can go for their preferred marquee/buy-to-sell type of signing.
Going into another CL qualifier without a key part of the team missing AGAIN/STILL is unbelievable.
As you suggest, It just begs the question of what is the reasoning behind it. At one point, Celtic clearly didnt want to leave Sevco/the OF behind. Is that what is still driving Celtic’s decisions? Or is it simple incompetence?
Watched the MON press conference. More grandfatherly every day. Don’t see any fire in his belly anymore. Seems old and resigned to their fate.

The CL money is a good thing?
What if its regular receipt were to open up an unbridgeable gap between the two halves of the Old Firm?
Would Mr Desmond think that is a good thing?
Perhaps he prefers to roll the dice.
