Wrong place, wrong time
Well folks, its that time again. Our annual season defining game that will dictate our schedule, our balance sheet, our next signings, and the general mood for the next 6 months or more.
Tonight LASK shall visit Celtic Park with the ultimate aim of keeping the tie alive when we visit their place in 6 days time.
Are we ready? As usual the answer is complicated.
It’s not a total no or a total yes, the answer lies somewhere in between. We are strong at the back, strong in attack, theres big players in the side with proper pedrigree, plus theres goals in the team.
Not only that we will have the twelth man effect in the biggest stadium they’ve ever played in.
We have “the” manager for a night like tonight, pulls another 12 feet high speech out of his locker.
Celtic don’t go into this battle weaponless, yet I doubt theres any among us that wanted more weapons.
Thats on the park and off it. In the EPL its often the final team on the park that wins the game, ie the subs make the desired impact. Brendan liked a bit of that, so did Ange. Martin has no such luxury, theres not much there to call upon.
Especially in the vitally important middle of the park unless the three really pull it out of the bag for 90 minutes plus. Big ask.
Especially when youre opponent naturally plays 3-5-2 and its working for them, big-time.
We wont be changing shape, tonight is not the night for an experiment. 4-3-3 it is.
We need Benji, Callum, and Baur (I presume) to perform heroics while needing heroes or a hero to emerge from the forward three. The rearguard will be called into action often I imagine and they will need to man up.
The wall of noise, our players pumped experiencing it for the first time, almost surfing on the positive waves coming from the crowd,,in no way would I dismiss this becoming our night. Read somewhere that Hassan gets a big big bonus if he helps get us through, its likely that Duran and Hogh and Baur got similar.
We have players and some cards to play.
I previously wrote that we would pump them, and we absolutely could, but that was typed before the team lost Arne and AJ plus never signed the 2nd midfielder before the true window and the wildcard window slammed shut. While frustrating as hell, I imagine the energy levels to really pick up under the floodlights when you can’t hear yourself think and as I said on Mondays article the team looked poor without energy.
Yet Duran had it the whole game and if he was surrounded by more energy that could only be a benefit in my opinion. I would stick a quid on him to score. At the weekend Baur performed the double pivot and the attacking midfielder role, I want to see more of that. Luke MacGowan is hugely important, words I rarely type, as he will most likely be involved in the most important part of the park in the most important game of the season. Who woulda thunk it?
I’m confident in this playoff not because we look like a great team, but we can do damage. We have the players to shred you at any moment, you don’t score 4 and 5 by accident. And the team who is scoring for fun, the team with a good Steamroller vibe now faces a good opponent. Fine, throw them into battle as steel sharpens steel and may the best men win.
A year ago if you asked me would we beat Lask I would have laughed at the question. Im not laughing now, they must be decent to overcome a Red Bull group side, and win a double.
But I do know there is such a thing as wrong place, wrong time.
It’s their wrong place, wrong time as far as Im concerned.
You’re not showing up here at our party and spoiling it, no Siree. Not in “his” last season now hes got even more quality lined up when we are into the CL proper. Nope, I want them shellshocked in the first leg with the second a formality (showing off our new bling and proving theres levels to this game). I don’t just want to be in the CL draw, I want to see MON romp into it with a team the supporters can believe in and that my friends is a dangerous combination, for football that is.

We now have a new JustGiving page set up to enable donations to be made for our latest charity appeal.
We wanted to focus again on a local charity, and this time one which is dedicated to helping those suffering from homelessness, addiction or poverty.
The one we have gone for is

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.
As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.
And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!
Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

I do thin k that, at one time, Celtic were afraid of getting too far ahead of the zombies, but Im noit sure if that is still the driving factor. Hard to understand why Celtic do what they do.
It’s going to be really important to harness that crowd energy by getting at LASK right from the off. There’s nothing that sucks the energy out of a Euro crowd more than watching our team go backwards, lose the ball, then watch opponents keep the ball until every player on their side has had a touch, feels comfortable, and settles into the game.
Liverpool are superb at this at Anfield, swarming the opposition goal immediately, and raising the Kop noise to levels that stun the opposition.
We need to do this, and to hell with the tippy tappy stuff in midfield, or watching us struggle to play it out from the back. Get after them from the first minute, and force them into errors.

Do you know if we managed to register Emenalo? Our squad now appears to be a dog’s breakfast, with Engels and Ox taking up 2 spaces.

IQ4,
If we registered a fresh player we would know. No Emenalo although the keeper is in Glasgow apparently.

Good morning all from Govanhill.
Final leg of a fantastic trip to Vietnam, what a brilliant holiday.
5 places in 3 weeks
Flight was broken up in Dubai and heading to Ho Ho Chi Minh for the last 3 days.
I would recommend this place to everyone. Great food, excellent weather & the people are brilliant.
Total for the same as 2 weeks in Spain during the school holidays, but what an adventure. Loads and loads of young families from all over the world, don’t be lied to about travelling far and wide. Believe it for yourself, don’t take my word for it.
As soon as we get back we are booking for next year.
Anyone know of a good celtic pub in Antarctica?
Sorry. Predictive text. I meant San Sebastian.
Good morning friends and a Big Happy European Matchday to everyone who posts or lurks on this fine site.
What we do tonight without the ball will be as important as what we do with it. Sunday highlighted the deficiencies we have in defensive midfield areas and we cannot afford an opponent of this pedigree the same luxury as we did Utd.
If we keep a clean sheet , I’m confident we’ll go through as there’s goals in this Celtic team.

We were in Asia in December.
Surprisingly we preferred Vietnam to Thailand although crossing the road was a nightmare.
I am a bit more relaxed about this qualifier than most and I will tell you why. Yes I would love to be at the big table again providing we can stiffen up that midfield which we might in the last week of the window. Woukd I fancy playing PSG? Na!
if we don’t qualify we are in the Europa group stage and MON has unfinished business there and might fancy a real crack at it.
However our 17 man squad includes the suspended ox, the known to be injured AJ and the transferred Engels. So a 14 man squad. The 8 man home grown includes the now transferred Montgomery. So a club our size that can register a 25 man squad for these two matches only has 21 available plus Donovan from the b list.
Thats not really befitting of a big club in my view.
Lustened to the huddle breakdown pod with their Austrian football expert and I fear for our midfield. At this level they have to protect the defence as well as getting the ball forward. Mibbe we will win 5-3
I think we’re going into tonight’s game with a better side than we expected about a month ago, but there’s no doubt that our midfield is woefully short. We will need Duran to use his speed to tackle back when it’s required, and Nygren to do the same.
In fairness to the latter, I was amongst his sternest critics for occupying a midfield role but opting out of the hard yards, but he has put them in since being restored to the side in April. We will need more of that tonight. As for the third mid, I’d go for Baur. He looked well up for it on Saturday, and up to pace too. He might have been looking for a move in the summer, but he clearly didn’t neglect his preseason training.
No predictions from me, but I hope the bookies have priced it right with us being around 1/2 on the night.
Lask set up 3-5-2 sounds like they go with the old kick and rush style of football, Martin and his coaching staff will have studied them a lot. I wouldn’t be suprised if we went 4-4-2, but whatever system we go with, one thing I believe is that Martin will adjust the teams shape to counter theirs.
I just have the feeling that he might utilise Scales in the midfield to stiffen it up.
I think that we are a much more potent force up front now with the recent arrivals and the 4-0 victories prove that, that old adage of ‘goals wins games’ still counts. If you had offered me those attacking players before the season began I would have been very happy. M’on The Hoops.

Frodshambhoy, when we first got here we never understood the horn blasting from ever car, then we were told that it’s used more as a signal than a form of anger.
Done Thailand 🇹🇭 on many occasions and I would agree.
don’t think I will be watching the game tonight 2am kick off, will catch the he return leg when I’m home.

Playing 12 might win us the game but I’m sure the opposition will notice. 😀
Ex-machina,
Bugger!
Just a wee experiment to see if anyone noticed 👀😁
The reason I started out thinking 3-5-2 was because I thought Nygren and Hogh would be good in that formation.
There might actually be a good 3-5-2 line-up when we finally get round to acquiring a proper no6.
HH 🍀
Lask get the ball forward quickly and aren’t afraid to go long to do so. They are all big and athletic and a real danger from set pieces. Their three at the back actually score a fair percentage of their goals. They are also very quick defenders with good recovery pace. They had a disastrous start to last season winning 1 of their first 8 games. Lost 5 goals to Salzburg. Brought back their old manager and steamed up the league and won the title.
if you want to compare Austrian football and Scottish football Sturm Graz finished 2nd last season and played hearts who finished 2nd in Scotland and won 6-0 on aggregate.
Celtic in the big cup ..

Thought so!
We have two weeks to sort out a fit for purpose midfield.
Also, CCV’s return has strengthened an unchanged backline, and his durability is crucial particularly as AJ will be missing for sometime.
However, I cannot see CCV playing three games a week over a heavily congested schedule.
We have to look at better options than Trusty moving across or Dane Murray filling in.
Miracles may yet happen, but this is not a CL quality squad.
Loan market to the rescue again I suspect.
Ex-machina,
They’ve done it to us again, haven’t they?? I would have told them the no6 jersey gets filled before we do anything else. I’m actually boring myself now.
Imagine Real, Barca, Liverpool or City going years without a proper defensive midfielder, eh? Oh no, that’s right, that would NEVER happen at a serious football club!
Gonna need to achieve in spite of the board …AGAIN!!
HH 🍀
LASK primarily use a back three, rather than a conventional 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1.
Their main starting formations are 3-4-1-2 or 3-4-2-1 depending on how they think the opposition will line up but which quickly becomes a 5-3-2 without the ball.
For example, against Salzburg in April they were listed as:
3-4-1-2
3 centre-backs
2 wing-backs
2 central midfielders
1 attacking midfielder
2 strikers
And in their July friendly against Fenerbahçe they actually lined up 5-3-2, with Bello and Jørgensen as the wide players and three central defenders.
So for tonights game I’d be expecting something along the lines of:
GK
RCB — CB — LCB
RWB —CM—CM — LWB
AM
ST — ST
The important tactical point for us is the three centre-backs + wing-backs. They can get five behind the ball quickly, but their wing-backs can also push high and make the shape look like a 3-4-1-2 in possession.
As Austrian champions LASK deserve both to be in the CL proper ( as do we), and also our utmost respect.
Nonetheless, we both find ourselves in the qualifying game play off and I’m confident, that over the two ties, we shall qualify. I think we’ve done the correct thing in postponing the weekend game and I’d also be confident of taking a lead over to Austria.
However, we need to get much tighter at the back and in midfield, so our transition play needs to be spot on.
Johnston out till November
A cautious leader there pal . I vvant see where we are stronger without engels and johnstone , in favt right bavk gives me the fears , what we have is what we have too late now to improve the side before the game . Up front seem to be good buys midfield seems weaker to me . Not long to wait to find out . Hope to god im wrong .
AWENAW
Thanks for that, even if I don’t fell any better for reading it! I wish Martin and Sean read it too.
I think the tie depends on the bravery of Dietmar Kühbauer. He will have noted our defensive frailties on Saturday but also our quick attacking intent.
Is he confident knowing that AJ injury and Engels departure leaves us very weak down the right hand side and try to expose it from the start or will he want to take the game to halftime without conceding. Have a look at our formation and personnel. See how familiar and comfortable we are with it. Give his players 45mins experience of Celtic Park and then adjust accordingly to expose any possible weak defensive capabilities on the right hand side.
So the big question is does he go for it from the off or play a low block. I would expect him to be cautious as LASK have never played in such an intimidating atmosphere as Celtic Park and he doesn’t know how we will line up and with whom. I don’t think even MON is certain.
They will want to avoid losing an early goal. Which is any goal in the first half. They will be delighted to take a draw or a one goal deficit to Austria.
I’ll be very surprised if they think act and play differently tonight unless we make mistakes. They will be prepared to wait until next week to act upon any perceived weaknesses.
If that’s AJ out for another extended period, who is going to want to pay £15-20m for him from here?
Got a feeling that’s the last we’ll be hearing from Everton.
Maybe he’ll get back to being fit and decide to spend the rest of his career with us.
No simple answers here.
BAD
I think AJ is under contract until 2029, so Celtic have some leverage in negotiations. But I have heard that he does want to move south, and was keen on the move to Everton, however the two clubs (Celtic £15 million and Everton ££8million) were far apart on valuation.
Mike,
Being a fellow Canuck, I was hoping AJ would be the man for years to come. The way things are going he may never get his ‘Big’ move.
I can think of worse things in life than being Celtic’s no2 for the best years of your career.
HH 🍀
Are we prepared for this tie.
The answer is , absolutely not.
St Tams,
The annoying thing is how close we are to being ready ..we just had to get a move on with a no6 plus cover at FB
If there’s a wrong way to go about things …

BAD
For the last 10 mins of tonights game , our back 4 could be .
Ralston, Murray, Trusty and Scales.
That gives me the fear
BAD – You spoke yesterday about your Da’s enjoyment of Clyde FC, this is all the autographs written on a souvenir handkerchief of the Empire Exhibition Trophy winners in 1938. Some of the names are hard to read but Clyde FC Scottish Cup winners 1938 is quite distinct.
John Brown -James Kirk – James H? -Harry Beaton – Eddy Fallon – Ned Weir – Tom Robertson –
David Noble – Willie MAC? – round the corner Douglas Wallace – John Gillies.
All the winning EEX Celtic team autographs are there too including Willie Maleys and Jimmy McGrory, might show them tomorrow.
St Tams,
I need to be honest, me too! We know the real reason these lads are in the squad – they are being paid peanuts.
Donovan there’s hope for, but I just don’t see it with either Murray or Scales
HH 🍀
Bawheid,
That’s great. I would love to have been able to show that to my dad.
I remember him telling me what it was like on the main st in Brigton when the bully wee won the Scottish cup after beating us.
But for him taking me to Parkhead because he wanted to see teams like Real M, there’s a fair chance I’d just have ended up a Clyde fan 😉
Thanks for that.
HH 🍀
I think Baur has something about him.
Pity he hasn’t had time to bed in but I think he can be the man tonight 🙏🙏🤞🤞
You know what’s really annoying?
Sevco needed a right back for Thursday’s Euro tie. They went out and got one, a Serbian international on loan from Villa who has played in the EPL and Bundesliga.
We have Donovan and Ralston.
