Duran Duran

Morning, all.

I went into last night’s match with a certain amount of trepidation, and I’m not going to deny it. My misgivings were certainly justified, because LASK made this a very difficult night for us. They had more shots than us and more on target, and even outscored us in xG by 1.75 to 0.88. That we kept a clean sheet was down to some very good defending when required, and an excellent display from Sinisalo in goal. That we significantly outstripped that xG? Well, bear with me!

LASK started like a house on fire, and even had the ball in the net inside twenty seconds. A simple ball over the top into the left hand channel was met with an unstoppable strike across the keeper and into the far top corner. It really was a peach of a finish, but fortunately for us he had wandered offside. It was a wake up call-but it took us a while to do so.

We looked good going forward all night, but our defence took a while to get a grip on proceedings-and if I’m honest, the midfield didn’t quite get there. Baur played well, but he is still getting to know his colleagues. Nygren does his best work going forward, though he manned up well when needed. And CalMac took a while to come into the game, though his second half performance in particular was excellent. For all the criticism in those words, it’s worth remembering that they had five in midfield to our three. And even more as the game wore on and they went hunting for a goal to get back into the tie.

We knew before the game started that these difficulties were likely. What we didn’t know beforehand was what we were going to bring to the table-and what a feast it was! I’ve seen better performances from us over the years, but I don’t remember being able to say that every goal was a peach. Not even the 6-2 game, though as far as I was concerned at the time-and now!-they were all a joy to behold!!! Let me explain…

After 25 minutes of end to end stuff, we were all breathless but with hearts in mouths. It was obvious this game wasn’t going to finish goalless, but could we get that vital opener? It hadn’t been for the want of trying, with Duran unlucky early on after a great ball from Donovan, and then shooting wide just afterwards. Hogh was tireless in his endeavours, tying up the opposition centre backs, but the goal when it came had a comfortingly familiar look to it.

Tierney received the ball on the overlap, crossed it in to the danger area. It was half cleared to the edge of the box, but there didn’t seem any danger as we had nobody running onto it. Still, it was close enough for Nygren to step across and whack it with his left into the postage stamp. As I said, a peach. And better was to come. Twice!

The second one came about due to Yang pressing the keeper. The ball broke to Tierney again, and in an almost carbon copy of our first goal, he swung it in and it was half cleared to the edge of the box. This time it fell to Duran to hit with his left, and he whacked it on the drop past a helpless keeper. The stadium was rocking-and so were LASK! It remained that way till half time, and till halfway through the second period. And possibly the best of the lot.

Donovan, who had a career best match in my opinion, looked to be in bother in his own box, but got it to Sinisalo who immediately spread it wide to Trusty. He got it forward to the circle for Høgh to lay off to Nygren. He went wider still to Duran, who returned it as Nygren ran into the box. With me so far?

Nygren then switched it straight back to the onrushing Duran to hammer into the net for the third. Three goals, all left footed. There’s one for the anoraks amongst ye!

At this stage, LASK knew another goal could be fatal for their hopes but getting one back would put a different complexion on things altogether. They had caused us bother all night, and the loss of Baur from our midfield didn’t do us any favours. Neither, sadly, did his replacement Hatate. He didn’t hide, no suggestion of that, but the drop in standards from him is shocking to watch. Sinisalo had to work hard for his clean sheet, I can tell you. One of his saves (EIGHT on the night!) in particular was a cracker.

We also continued to press till the end, and a flurry of corners plus a late break from Hassan had us hoping. Unfortunately, the fourth wouldn’t come. Not last night anyway-but this team has goals in it, and hopefully we will prove that again over in Austria. It would be even better if Duran added to his tally, as he is now the top scoring Colombian for any Glasgow team in the Champions League. Fatboy, then, is back in second place again (!)

To sum it up? A fantastic game of football from a neutral point of view. A fantastic result for us. A frustrating night for LASK, who must wonder how they drew a blank. And with both sides not playing this weekend, there is a lot for each management team to think about over the next few days. Normally, it would make sense to hold what we have while hoping to hit them on the break. But I suspect that sitting off this side-who look excellent going forward-might not be wise.

Who’d be a manager, huh?

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2025-26*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #4 CELTIC 3 LASK (NYGREN, DURAN(2) )*

Good evening, friends.
Let me start with an apology. As a rule, whenever folk nominate the same 3 players as me I try to send a personal reply with additional comments on what those players brought to the game. But following last night’s game I would have had to draft 72 such emails as, for once, the same 3 picks came up with incredible regularity. Normal service may resume next week. And so to the game itself….
A rain drenched Celtic Park was bursting at the seams for the first leg play off tie for this season’s Champions League. I was less nervous than normal for such a game, perhaps because of the safety net of the guaranteed Europa League spot should we lose. And in the early stages that did seem the most likely outcome.
Less than a minute gone and a Van Basten-esque volley crashed into the Celtic goal, only to be disallowed for offside. 2 minutes later and a ball through the middle saw the Lask striker easily outpace Carter-Vickers but he sclaffed his shot wide of the post. At that point I hoovered behind the sofa!
But Celtic began to settle after that and in the 6th minute Yang, donning his new Maeda-like hairstyle, won a free kick at the edge of the box. But Nygren’s effort cannoned off the wall. A couple of minutes later and an excellent over the top pass from Donovan earned a toe-poked volley from Duran that slipped narrowly wide. Another brilliant cross field long pass out of defence from Donovan fell nicely for Duran on the left side this time but he just couldn’t get the ball under control. But the chances were coming.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute, following 3 or 4 minutes of controlled pressure from Celtic. Yang’s off the ball move into the box dragged a defender in, leaving loads of space for Tierney to receive a pass wide left. The cross into the box was headed out to the D and Nygren, who was far more involved in the game, met it with a brilliantly controlled left foot curler into the keeper’s top left hand corner. Cue bedlam in the stands. And me pushing my sofa back against the wall.
Lask continued to look dangerous going forward and scored with a well placed header, only for another offside decision to cancel out the strike.
Nygren’s ‘goal of the match’ award lasted only 9 minutes. Another clever move saw Tierney in an identical position to the first goal. Again, a cross into the box was headed back out to the D and this time it was the impressive Duran who volleyed a brilliant strike into the same top corner. 2 goals to the good at half time.
Celtic continued to dominate possession in the second half and almost got a third when a Calmac shot was deflected by Høgh on to the post. But Lask also looked dangerous on the break with Sinisalo having to pull off a couple of decent saves. But in the 67th minute we scored what was, for me, the best goal of the night. Donovan was under pressure in the right back area and could easily have hoofed the ball clear. But he shimmied inside and found space to pass across to Sinisalo, who fed Trusty, who played it up to Høgh in the centre circle. Hogh held off his marker and laid it off to Nygren and Benji progressed with the ball, fed Duran on the right, but continued his run into the box to receive the ball back. A return lay off to Duran who curled the ball home. A brilliant move and a brilliant finish to end the scoring on the night.
Celtic used all 5 substitutes during the second half, mostly replacing players who had given their all, rather than being introduced to change the game. This meant we could see out the game without having to risk the introduction of Balikwisha.
All in all a very good night at Celtic Park, highlighted by those stunning goals from Nygren and Duran Duran.
Celtic have now played 4 games and won them all. We have scored 13 and conceded just once.
As for the voting numbers, congratulations to everyone who contributed to what has been the highest turnout ever. An unbelievable 145 kind folk took time to fire an email my way and trigger another £3 donation to the Sentinel Celts nominated charity, Glasgow City Mission. We have hit the 100 vote target in all 4 games so far.
And so to the results. The total votes cast for each player (with my own nominations asterisked) are as follows –

Sinisalo: 15
Donovan*: 118
Carter Vickers: 4
Trusty: 0
Tierney: 4
McGregor: 23
Baur: 16
Nygren*: 99
Duran*: 143
Høgh: 10
Yang: 1
Hatate: 0
Tounekti: 0
Scales: 0
Hassan: 0
Ralston: 0
Unused subs: Balikwisha, Doohan, Forrest, Kenny, McCowan, Murray, Osmand

And so, the POINTS earned by each player for the game against Lask are as follows –
25 – Duran
22 – Donovan
19 – Nygren
16 – McGregor
14 – Sinisalo
12 – Baur
11 – Høgh
10 each – Carter-Vickers and Tierney
8 – Yang
5 each – Hassan, Hatate, Ralston, Scales, Tounekti and Trusty
1 each – Balikwisha, Doohan, Forrest, Kenny, McCowan, Murray and Osmand

And the CUMULATIVE POINTS after 4 games played are as follows –
79 – Nygren
74 – Duran
57 – McGregor
55 – Tierney
52 – Høgh
51 – Carter-Vickers
48 – Donovan
40 – Trusty
34 – Tounekti
33 – Sinisalo
30 – Engels and Yang
21 – Baur

14 – Oxlade-Chamberlain
12 – Scales
9 – Hassan
8 – Hatate and Osmand
7 – Murray
5 – Ralston
4 – Doohan
1 – Balikwisha and Kenny

We now have just 5 more sleeps to wait until our return leg against Lask. It’s an 8.00pm kick off next Tuesday to see whether we progress to the Champions League or have to settle for the Europa League.
Hail Hail!

Saint Stivs at 3.53pm

I touched on this the other night, how we can get good players BUT it is complicated.
By that I mean, each player had their own reasons according to their words, so its not a one size fits all scenario ie we are Celtic sign on that line.

Baur said he phoned Kuhn who told him you must experience that, don’t miss your chance.
Hogh wanted a fresh challenge and the legend of Celtic permeates Scandinavia, he knew straight away he had to try it for himself.
Hassan said it was the Zoom with Martin in January that got the ball rolling and he was impressed in his due diligence so to speak. He liked the manager, felt really wanted, fancies a giant club.
Duran wanted Western Europe for obvious reasons,, a million Euros is worth about 10 million in Columbia and not to say he doesn’t love football but I think he wants a lucrative career yet also a successful one. Latin American players have a tendency to support their wider family and aid where they are from, not that thats a bad thing its just another example of why a player might join. Go with the money and maximize your career yes, enjoying the journey yes, but its also in his best interests to fire us into the CL, have another great campaign on that stage, and go for a fortune because a big fee means big wages. Plus he would be worth it.

I read somewhere that Hassans fee contains a 1m CL bonus with the player himself getting a huge bonus if we qualify.

The quality is out there and in fairness I must give credit where its due and the Chelsea lad we hired that used to cover South America for them, Mark Cooper, has been the signing of the year. Once again, quality over quantity and you hire well good results tend to follow. Chelsea have never been slouches in the transfer window in the modern era and it really looks like Cooper has found that sweet spot, not a punt looks real good for our pricerange. We will get more players in and I really hope they also impress because that would mean this guy is what we have needed for a long time,, this great window will earn him credit in the boardroom and with the manager which means a much deeper merging of the football department and the balance sheet ie,,,hes making us a fortune, go all in on this guy and get him a new contract.
Breaking the 200m turnover mark suddenly looks likely more than hopeful.
Share price through the roof and Champagne all around.

Cooper is only one good arguably great Head of Scouting, imagine what we could do with a big sum pushed his way to expand or upgrade the network? It would be foolish to not take advantage of that man’s skills whilst he’s here.

Like water in the desert good players await only to be found.

Hail Hail

Celger

Mahe…..great point you raise on Mark Cooper. I think BR got him in.
