Gimme a game

As I type I’m hating the decesion to deprive us of another 90 plus minutes watching this Celtic team.
Its the best feeling in the world when you’re just itching for the whistle to blow, because you know something special is about to happen.

It would have happened I have no doubt but I also understand the managers pre home-tie decision to cancel today’s game. He most likely thought we will need the whole week to prepare for the biggest game of the season, which brings more time for the new Bhoys to integrate. Turns out he didn’t need to cancel this game, but better safe than sorry.

I know its an old cliche, but team spirit is so so important and during the 3rd goal vs Lask celebrations it struck me how good of a group we have. These guys look bonded and together, loving life at Celtic, living for the crowd and playing for pride, enjoyment, and the jersey.
That’s a dangerous situation, thats when “weve got something special here” starts materializing.

Not that we need a boost but imagine we sign a couple before Tuesday, not so they can play, but it sends a message you must perform when we are bringing in talent. More quality in and a victory over there, the positivity would be off the charts with tickets hard to comeby especially CL tickets. Thats where you wanna be as a football club, exciting, on the rise, sold out to the max, and that’s the path we are on.

Putting aside the stadium expansion chat we have made a substantial outlay for future profit in this window but heres my point.
When youve tasted that level of player and income (they are 24 or under and will go for a fortune one day) do you go back? Would the investors not say to Dermot stay on this path when our income breaks the 200m bracket for the first time?
Why would you leave it?

I believe this window was the coffin nail in club signings, punts 3m and under. Dermot is going spend on one hand the money that comes in on the other hand.
Thats what you get when his most trusted advisor took the job as a personal favour plus Mark Cooper is coming up trump’s at discovering good talent within our new pricerange.
He’s let the genie out of the bottle, legend at the helm and dangerous players how can we not fall in love and start dreaming?

&nbso;

These under 24 year olds will boost the balance sheet to an unseen. height, and I really hope this quality over quantity approach now has the leading and deciding voice rather than the ” fast lane then slow lane” approach.
We cannot go back to club signings and punts after this, so in many ways it feels like a beginning. This quality over quantity approach will pay off and piss off/embarrass one certain ex employee, but we all know its the long overdue right track. Without touching his pocket but spending our intake well year on year, when youve got a good player trading system in place, imagine,,,
Dermot make this your legacy, this new strong team and not being afraid to spend over 5m

A different direction has been chosen, thats apparent. Celtic are buying players not just spending money and long may it last.
But this must be our new base level, our springboard to catapult upwards via the profit off this bunch. We cannot go back to Shin Yamadas etc.

I believe this summer the decisions made Celtic turn a corner and once youre on that path theres no going back.

The original “slow lane” was introduced because our players weren’t increasing in value assets but mostly men with the best behind them when they left. Thats no longer the case, 24 and under we are targeting/sanctioning and the point is Dermot backed his horse each way. Aye Martin heres a hoard but we break even with a more compact but better squad.
If under 24 brings the big profit, then theres no need to enter the slow lane again. Spending right now makes a lot of sense on so many levels. It looked like a season of protest now its pure excitement as our new and looking worthy heros step forward. This Club eh,,,as the old song says I fooled around and fell in love.

Awe Naw,

Thanks for the update re Butland, still a weird transfer?

But, back to us, as I’ve said many a time ‘Are we not allowed to have a good squad’?

We sign someone and then there is a debate about who is leaving, why?

We are allowed a good squad FFS. Embrace it.

Let the huns and everyone else sign dross!

Torino are having financial trouble, so it is causing a bit if a stalemate: Torino are desperate for cash, so trying to squeeze out every penny, and are hoping for a late bidding war, but Celtic know they will have to sell him this window, and so are hoping thay no one else comes in with a late bid, so they can drive the price down.

Our board are of the opinion that we can’t compete in europe with teams that have a higher income than us. We have consistently struggled against teams that have a fraction of our income.

Often our problem has been we have faced well coached teams playing their system properly.
With the reactionary and disjointed approach Celtic have had for years it’s not really surprising we got beaten often and easily.
Since our board had no interest other than making money our incomplete footballing operations suffered.
Hoping now that our scouting set up has improved other football areas will follow.

CCB – Many thank’s for your reply yesterday on Charlie Tully.

What great memories to have, you must run that one over and over in your mind quite often (there’s a Celtic song in there somewhere). I didn’t need to look up the game that the double scoring corner took place (Brockville – Falkirk) but that sums up the Cheeky Chappie, with both his gallowness and his talent while wearing ‘divers’ boots and hitting a sodden leather baw.
His memory lives on in the recalled statements of Belfast Celtic’s home page where new generations remember his and other Belfast Celtic stories from the past remembered by uncles, nephews, sons and grandbairns. Memories are, of those great players of the past and that is their lasting legacy.

Charlies jersey, that jersey of the 1951 Scottish Cup final win sits above my bed, professionally framed (like the others) preserved for future generations of Celtic supporters to remember those wonderful players of the1950s /60s, heavy jerseys that soaked up the rain. His small black picture frame of him with the Scottish Cup hangs under my picture of Pope John Paul for reasons you will know. His was a rare talent, one of skill mixed with entertainment two of the main reasons we all love our football.

Charlie Tully’s memory is held in the highest esteem by Celtic and Belfast Celtic supporters of that era, his memory will never be forgotten. Charles Patrick Tully is buried in Milltown Cemetery Belfast,
1924 – 1971. RIP.
CCB – Hope you are well, thank you for sharing your memory of CPT, it says it all when you mention your cherished Celtic scarf with CPT initials. Awerabest!

agreed

You can either be like bodo glimt and Cape Verde, show no fear and give yourself the best chance youve got in terms of preparation.

Or
you can be like Celtic and see euro income as a bonus and that’s that.

There is a nasssive difference between competing ( to the best of our ability) and partaking. We should realistically be aiming, nay, expecting to get out of the CL group stage every season,

August 23, 2026 10:26 am

I’d imagine our transfer strategy ( potential targets) hinge on the outcome of Tuesday in Austria. We’re almost there , but LASK are more than capable of scoring two or three, so our system needs to be spot on. The high line needs dropping back by 10 yards.

New faces would’ve helped, especially in MF, but I also think our squad is more than good enough to see the tie through ( as it was last year, so no complacency).

Come Wednesday, hopefully we’re where we belong as Scottish Champions in Europe.

Mahe- No, I never knew that, what brilliant family memories to have.

We each have our favourite players, for various reasons, don’t know why but I took a liking to the butcher, Jackie Vernon. What a brilliant football career he enjoyed and the picture of him leading out Belfast Celtic wearing that ‘Shamrock’ jersey against the ‘Tic, captained by Charlie Tully in 1952 in that Charity match V. Celtic for the De La Salle Orphan Bhoy’s home just struck a cord with me. So, I had to find our more about him. But you do not have to delve to far into your memory to recall your Belfast Celtic memories and what amazing memories to hold.

Apart from his Belfast Celtic career Jackie Vernon was said to be one of the best defenders of his day and the stories he would retell to the bhoys in his neighbourhood while making sausages was both funny and brilliant, obviously he wasn’t as stern as he looked. Ironic that both he and his Mrs (Jean)passed virtually on the same day, it was at their funeral that I saw the front coffin holder on the right was the spitting image of my Da. it wasn’t him of course but? it furthered my interest.
Jackie’s autograph like Charlie Tully’s is in that Charity match programme which is precious to me.
Also, so is the medal belonging to the Belfast Celtic goalkeeper, who was the goalie during the London Olympics and ‘Faither was his understudy……………Pat Macalinden one of the badly injured in that infamous game at Windsor Park. (Apologies for my auld memory).

But, written/picture memories are nothing compared to living memories, but one thing bothers me, your not related to that daftie . “The Real Mccoy” are you?
You look at the funeral of Jackie Vernon and Charles Patrick and you see big name hero’s at both,
Tully’s coffin carried by Bertie Peacock I think and big Jock and Cesar and it brings it home to you just how much both these men were revered, its a real life tragedy that Belfast Celtic stopped participating in Irish football, they have left a void that will never be filled and that is so sad,
After that you know what happened better than I do, but that’s another story.
Thank you for sharing your bhoyhood memories, enjoy your holidays.
Mr and Mrs Jackie Vernon together in life and in death. Buried in Milltown Cemetery. 1918-1981 RIP.

Bawheid,

One of my big regrets is losing all my Celtic memorabilia, a collection of things that started when my dad would get me a programme at the game as a kid.

I’m sure you understand that sometimes life just gets in the way, and you make decisions that, in retrospect, you can’t believe you made.

Raising the money to start again in another country meant a lifetime of possessions went, and I was a bit of a hoarder – even as a kid – so every now and then another thing I lost will pop back into my head, which leads to me remembering things I’d totally forgot I used to own

Outside of things I gave to nephews (Centenary medal etc), what I miss most is the collection of European match programmes, which started out as a goal to see if I could find them all. I never did get near to finding them all.

When I see the prices these programmes are changing hands at today, I really could cry! And although I haven’t even tried to collect ANYTHING since, I really look forward to seeing your posts on here, just in the hope you’re sharing something else from your own stuff.

So, thanks for what’s been shared, and I look forward to what’s to come 👍

Ps, any home Euro programmes from our golden era?

HH 🍀

If we manage to add the 3 we’re currently heavily linked with, it would give us as good a midfield as we’ve had for some time.

Callum.
Ox.
McCowan.
Nygren.
Baur.
Mahmic.
Geneitis.
Emenalo (Who can play both LB and MF)
Reo

That would give us lots of options, while allowing us to be able to deal with injuries and suspensions.

Still maintain we should be looking to add one experienced centre back, not someone like Arthur (Who I liked) , but a guy who has lots of experience already.

Don’t leave an area of the pitch that doesn’t match the talent we’ll have middle to front ..it just doesn’t make sense.

The links this morning come from journalist David Friel.
