57 Channels And Nothing On

Morning, all.

Tomorrow night sees Celtic visit Austria for the second leg of our qualifier against LASK Linz. As we all know, three stunning goals have given us a cushion heading into the game, even if it is far from over. But I’ll deal more with the match preview tomorrow. Today I’d rather focus on how we will watch the match from our armchairs-and how that has changed very much for the worse in little over a decade.

When Rupert Murdoch first launched Sky in 1989, he took a serious gamble which could have cost him his entire company. He won that bet thanks to the vast profits pulled in from the newspaper side, which enabled him to subsidise his venture into satellite broadcasting-but thanks mainly to a huge punt on the TV rights at the inception of The Premier League in 1992. In fairness, the channel revolutionised the coverage of the game, and we lapped it up even though many of us despised the owner. Yep, many a Celtic (and Liverpool) supporter who would never be seen dead with a copy of The *un coughed up a small fortune to watch increasing numbers of games from all over.

Up till then we had been limited to a few games a year on the main terrestrial channels, plus the outstanding coverage of Serie A on Channel 4. But they were effectively free! Still, for less than the price of a season ticket to most grounds, we got a few games a week from England, one from Scotland and a regular fix of Spanish and other continental football. We might have grumbled at the cost and we might have grumbled about the ownership, but it was fairly decent value for money.

That changed about a decade ago. BT decided to challenge the incursion of Sky and others into its telephone and broadband business by sort of reversing the charges. While Sky offered a cheap broadband if you bought its TV package, BT would do the opposite. But to do that, they needed TV content. And football was the top banana.

They outbid Sky for coverage of a package of football rights in England and Scotland, but Sky retained the bulk of those. They then went shopping abroad to the big European leagues, but they hit the jackpot when they landed the rights to the EUFA trophies. Sky had just lost a big chunk of their football coverage in England and Scotland, plus access to many of the major European leagues-and now they had lost their flagship European coverage!

The armchair fan was still well covered though, possibly better than ever before. The problem was that they were having to pay for TWO subscriptions instead of one. Worse was to follow as minor channels tried to get a foothold, some of which would die trying. But to get back to my point about tomorrow night?

It’s our fifth game of the season. Every one of them has been live on tv. Tomorrow night sees us make an appearance on Amazon. It’s our fourth platform in five games, alongside Sky twice, TNT and Premier. Many people will baulk at paying for four different platforms and will just not bother watching at all. Others will venture to their local CSC or pub, spending more in beer than it would cost for the subscription!

Many more though will still be watching from their armchair via the many types of illegal stream available nowadays. Please note that I do not encourage such behaviour but I find it incredibly difficult to condemn, especially given the cost of watching on different platforms what was once available via one subscription.

And here’s the best laugh. Next season it will get worse! Paramount+ takes over from TNT for European coverage while keeping its rump English coverage, including the FA Cup! Never mind that TNT and Paramount+ are both owned by the same company, and that Larry Ellison hardly needs the money; the average football fan clearly hasn’t been squeezed enough!

I hope tomorrow night’s game goes to plan for us, and not just because, due to the number of English teams in the CL, we are unlikely to be on Amazon again. Unless we are drawn against them, and Martin does enjoy an English scalp! But we can still look forward to having to splash out for Sky, TNT and Premier. I’ve no idea how much it all comes to because I’m off down to the pub to watch it. Who knows, I might bump into a bloke with some of those mythical magic sticks of fire!

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!

We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

August 24, 2026 7:03 am

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details will be available on the dedicated page nearer to the beginning of the event on 17th September.

I remember that May long weekend praying for Celtic and Hearts victories- which would virtually neuter the Huns, it did – and then adding , whoever should win their upcoming two games would likely be Champions. Hearts wobbled, Celtic won both, eventually winning them all.

Hearts wobbled then adopted a safety first approach as the loser mentality of their manager came to the fore.

Thanks-but sometimes Dr Google is a good friend! The Celtic Wiki is, of course, also excellent, but I’ve had problems accessing that for some time now.

The buy-in from Bezos and Co to Liverpool should be viewed as a problem for English football and for the wider worldwide game, as should a possible takeover in the fullness of time. People like this rarely invest from sentiment, and none of those involved has any prior emotional involvement in the club.

Even now, Liverpool stand alone for the low number of season tickets they issue, around 45% of capacity. They rely instead on sightseeing tours for the remainder of capacity, because the once or twice a season visitor spends more per head than those who are there for every game.

Other big clubs will no doubt follow this policy; it makes sense in the short term, but hardly builds the kind of loya fan base that has made football what it is. I’d love the new “investors” to fail the fit and proper test, but the EPL doesn’t have the balls for it. Heyho…

It shows you how much the ‘Volks’ game has changed into a feeding trough for the multi – Nationals.

St Tams – CPT. Its good to know that Charles Patrick’s story might be brought up to date, his book
“Pass To You” is – of its time, you can feel he has such a personal input into this book, his talents really need to be shown to a wider audience.

St.Stivs – ‘Indeed’ two great Celts, thank you for posting the pictures, was great to see.

BAD – I’m suffering from withdrawal symptoms because I’ve stopped100% collecting but its been a great journey, sometimes when coming home with the items you could feel the sense of Celtic history in your hands, like Stevie Chalmers match worn jersey the last game the ‘Lions played at Celtic Park there’s a dollop of mud on his jersey, that was a bonus Celtic Park mud.
So, I sympathise with you and understand your regrets. For Celtic programmes you can buy some very cheaply through eBay I love bartering so get in there baby.
My Grandsons have all of my excess programmes and items such as my/ our Seville jerseys and many other trinkets and have started their own collections, I know that my younger son (50) has a Celtic App and gets some brilliant pictures just keep on searching that.s where the real fun is.

###

Seems odd. I’d be very surprised if 55% of the crowd at Anfield are tourists. Their website suggests they have various schemes, including ballots, for selling the non season book tickets which would be open to regular fans.

Restricting season book numbers is maybe a fairer way of allocating a scare resource among fans. Gives everyone a chance of going to a game other than those who have held season books for years. Would make for a better atmosphere too.

Liverpool are happy to have a low ST allocation, they make a fortune selling tickets to 3rd party companies at extortionate prices, the fan groups kick up fk every year but nothing changes

ERNIE,

Odd it may be, but they only allocate 28000 of their capacity of over 60000 to season tickets. It obviously works for them too.

The Nabbla,

The first time we had to play the new Hun team who appeared post-liquidation, what would have been wrong with asking for confirmation of who we were actually playing that day?

It obviously WASN’T Rangers, but that’s what it said on both the ticket and the programme.

I don’t think anyone was expecting Celtic to refuse to play the game, or anything so radical, but I’m still confused as to why we couldn’t ask for clarity.

In fact, that was all it would have took to rip the whole sham to shreds.

A small point – how many Celtic fans, paying supporters or not, do you imagine have walked away from football/Celtic based on the events that took place around 2012??

Celtic are, by any objective metric, the dominant club in Scottish football. And by Scottish football I include its organisations and regulatory bodies like the SFA and SPFL.

Celtic don’t stand apart, or above and beyond, any of it.

If Scottish Football abandons sporting integrity, and Celtic, whether for an easy life, or (and given Mr Desmond’s comments at the time, because it suits their own agenda) chose to go with that policy then they haven’t avoided treading in dog shit. They are wallowing in it.

They are not the sort of people I want to see controlling Celtic.

Bobby,

I could never turn my back on the team, but I was certainly one of the fans who were (Still are) disgusted with how the current custodians chose to deal with that whole charade.

I know it appears that almost everyone meekly went along with the big lie, but I just wanted our club to make it clear we were looking for clarity on the whole thing.

I know it suited the money men to turn a blind eye, as they only see pound signs, but I’ve often wondered how many guys (And gals) just felt they couldn’t stomach going along with it and walked away from the game.

Although I chose to separate my team from the greedy bastards in sharp suits (They just happen to run my club), it always bothered me when I think of lifelong fans losing Celtic from their lives.

Of course some will say it’s daft, but some obviously chose to put their principles first, and who can tell them they’re wrong?

Now, if the shoe has been on the other foot, I wonder if the Huns would have mirrored our own response, eh?

The spectre of 2012 has poisoned Scottish football for the foreseeable. Everyone knows the Huns died, even Celtic. But this is show business folks and without the ‘ Old Firm” Scottish football becomes even less than the curiosity shop it currently is.

Celtic ain’t daft and neither are the fans. Tens of thousands abandoned Celtic and only returned when the Huns did- coincidence or not – it spooked Celtic who had enjoyed 60,000 crowds for over 15 seasons only to see them drop off a cliff. £10m loss per season in tickets , merchandise down, hospitality down, sponsorship down, tv revenues down, advertising down. The club had two choices.

1. Play in a 2/3 full stadium for infinity. Reduce costs, especially on players and coaches, wave goodbye to CL football as a result.

2. Get Huns back. Hire top coaches and players, fill stadium, continue as before, but only make more money as fan demand increased.

Greed doesn’t care about the optics, not when big bonuses are being delivered.

Alternatively, announce we are sorry to read of their death, and make it stick.

We romp to the League every season, going for 16/17 in a row.

Scottish fitba would be even more sick of us.

Questions would be asked in both Parliaments about us moving to the EPL or England.

So, a few seasons of declining attendances would eventually pay off big time.

Tomorrow night’s coverage is accessed via Amazon Prime, for an amount significantly less than the subscriptions for TNT, Premier, Sky Sports. Prime has several advantages over the others (especially TNT) in their choice of commentators – no McCoist, Matterface, Dixon etc. Yes, they have Shearer but even he can be neutralised by utilising their crowd only option. They also let you access other content including movies etc for less than the Netflix subscription. However, Amazon also comes with one major downside in that it offers free delivery to everything Mrs K decides to order from Amazon, which she sees as an incentive to order more and more. 🤬

Great civil debate this morning on a topic that consumed my life for a few years after 2012.

I was one of many who after having a season ticket and going everywhere including Europe home and away I decided I didnt want to be part of a sport that had no integrity.

Unfortunately part of that sport was my club (not players) who i thought were built on everything I believed of in life standing up against war, racism, bigotry, bullies, greed and all that is wrong in this world was taken away from me when my club decided it either didnt have the stomach for the fight or even worse were also engaging in these horrible traits.

I can understand at the time the made up fear of riots on the streets or Scottish clubs and Scotland international team being banned from Europe for 5 years etc but we could have questioned 55 or most successful team in world narrative etc we chose not to and I chose to walk away with my integrity intact.

Still watch celtic when I can, always want them to win but more importantly I wanted us to escape the bigoted Scottish backwater and concentrate on improving in champions league year on year.

People who continue to buy into the myth since 2012 is their choice and I would never chastise them for their choice we have to now play the cheating hand we chose to accept from the organisation who have orchestrated the whole situation.

England ain’t ever happening, you can bet your life on it. Celtic knew this, so they opted to play the only hand they could ” win”. It includes an old firm Joker.

Personally, the seasons in a 40,000 crowd stadium I quite enjoyed. Parking was a lot easier as was getting a pie. I recall one night, a dreary cold damp March, we drew 0-0 at home to Dundee. Lucky if there were 20, 000 in that evening.

I really enjoyed the next few after that , but unfortunately they included the Huns. A stain on society, but not enough of a menace for me to give up my seats at Celtic. I left for Spain but my two Bhoys remain in those seats till this day.

At the time it was universally accepted the huns had died. It wasn’t a controversial or subversive opinion. It took a short time for the counter factual narrative to emerge. Celtic could, and should, have made it clear at that stage that the huns had indeed died. That would have stopped any attempt at pretending otherwise. They didn’t do so because they couldn’t see beyond The Old Firm business model. It might have been different if Mr Desmond was actually a Celtic fan, but he wasn’t. He made his opinions clear at the time. Opinions no Celtic fan holds.

There was no doubt the huns were coming back, one way of the other, but that could have happened without the pretence that they’re the same club.

We are now left with a situation that the SFA insists that any club that wishes to register with them has to have a recognised legal personality (they have published fairly detailed guidance on the matter), but at the same time are pretending that a Club, whose legal personality was a limited company, either managed to survive liquidation, or had some other form of legal personality not known to the law of Scotland.

It was a short term, expedient solution to an embarrassing problem, but it was a lie. And it sits there like an elephant with everyone pretending not to see it.

And if rules regarding something so existential can be outright ignored why would any other rules have to be followed?

August 24, 2026 1:02 pm

Trusty missing training is a worry. His pace makes up a lot for CCV’s lack of it. I really do not want to see Scales partnering CCV against the fleet footed LASK front two unless he is part of a back 5.

I half expected Emenalo to be announced today, and note that the lead on the other channel asserts that many of the alleged transfer targets are fiction. Yet it appears that the vast array of stories and rumors are concentrated on a small constellation of names, Toth, Sigur, Mahmic and Gineitis, so is there smoke without fire?

It is true that Blackburn manager Mowbray stated that no Celtic bid has been made for Toth, but the rumors about Baur, Hassan and Duran all turned out to have a basis in fact.

One wonders whether the delay in clinching deals is due to either the players or the club stalling to see if we reach the CL Group Stage. If the latter, one would also think we would be in a weaker negotiating position, in that the selling club would demand a higher fee.

Head spinning – going fer a lie doon. 🤣
