57 Channels And Nothing On
Morning, all.
Tomorrow night sees Celtic visit Austria for the second leg of our qualifier against LASK Linz. As we all know, three stunning goals have given us a cushion heading into the game, even if it is far from over. But I’ll deal more with the match preview tomorrow. Today I’d rather focus on how we will watch the match from our armchairs-and how that has changed very much for the worse in little over a decade.
When Rupert Murdoch first launched Sky in 1989, he took a serious gamble which could have cost him his entire company. He won that bet thanks to the vast profits pulled in from the newspaper side, which enabled him to subsidise his venture into satellite broadcasting-but thanks mainly to a huge punt on the TV rights at the inception of The Premier League in 1992. In fairness, the channel revolutionised the coverage of the game, and we lapped it up even though many of us despised the owner. Yep, many a Celtic (and Liverpool) supporter who would never be seen dead with a copy of The *un coughed up a small fortune to watch increasing numbers of games from all over.
Up till then we had been limited to a few games a year on the main terrestrial channels, plus the outstanding coverage of Serie A on Channel 4. But they were effectively free! Still, for less than the price of a season ticket to most grounds, we got a few games a week from England, one from Scotland and a regular fix of Spanish and other continental football. We might have grumbled at the cost and we might have grumbled about the ownership, but it was fairly decent value for money.
That changed about a decade ago. BT decided to challenge the incursion of Sky and others into its telephone and broadband business by sort of reversing the charges. While Sky offered a cheap broadband if you bought its TV package, BT would do the opposite. But to do that, they needed TV content. And football was the top banana.
They outbid Sky for coverage of a package of football rights in England and Scotland, but Sky retained the bulk of those. They then went shopping abroad to the big European leagues, but they hit the jackpot when they landed the rights to the EUFA trophies. Sky had just lost a big chunk of their football coverage in England and Scotland, plus access to many of the major European leagues-and now they had lost their flagship European coverage!
The armchair fan was still well covered though, possibly better than ever before. The problem was that they were having to pay for TWO subscriptions instead of one. Worse was to follow as minor channels tried to get a foothold, some of which would die trying. But to get back to my point about tomorrow night?
It’s our fifth game of the season. Every one of them has been live on tv. Tomorrow night sees us make an appearance on Amazon. It’s our fourth platform in five games, alongside Sky twice, TNT and Premier. Many people will baulk at paying for four different platforms and will just not bother watching at all. Others will venture to their local CSC or pub, spending more in beer than it would cost for the subscription!
Many more though will still be watching from their armchair via the many types of illegal stream available nowadays. Please note that I do not encourage such behaviour but I find it incredibly difficult to condemn, especially given the cost of watching on different platforms what was once available via one subscription.
And here’s the best laugh. Next season it will get worse! Paramount+ takes over from TNT for European coverage while keeping its rump English coverage, including the FA Cup! Never mind that TNT and Paramount+ are both owned by the same company, and that Larry Ellison hardly needs the money; the average football fan clearly hasn’t been squeezed enough!
I hope tomorrow night’s game goes to plan for us, and not just because, due to the number of English teams in the CL, we are unlikely to be on Amazon again. Unless we are drawn against them, and Martin does enjoy an English scalp! But we can still look forward to having to splash out for Sky, TNT and Premier. I’ve no idea how much it all comes to because I’m off down to the pub to watch it. Who knows, I might bump into a bloke with some of those mythical magic sticks of fire!

Nabbla,
His truth is an illusion??
And I take it you’re only speaking truth, eh?
Truth is truth
That is a truth .
Now the huns liquidated,we’re blootered out of the league and “accepted into” scotlands 4th tier.
Now that is a truth.i believe that as a fact.
It is there for the rest of time
There is no”counter factual narrative” as Ernie laughingly puts it.(flailing tragically)
So as far as commenting on hun,yeh I am right, not in an arrogant way but in the way of truth at that point in time.It may look that way as I am countering blog dust,ie the flannel surrounding the self harm and ending of the cheating hun.I step Celtic away from it.
It is interesting the sporting integrity debate that arose pre and post 2012.
No mention of sporting integrity during 100 years of a sectarian apartheid policy,or the inculcated cancer of masonicism and bigotry in our governing system, but because the nefarious deidyins end their club tantrums are ablaze,
Take care buddy

Had a walk round St Mary’s this morning. Lovely place it is, but there’s been a lot of change around that part of the Calton.
——————–
Living in the Port growing up I never had any opportunity to go to the church, and match days the closest we got was driving past.
I was over 50 by the time I actually took a wee drive there one day because VFR Frankie was always active within the parish and regularly telling stories of events, so one summers day when I was up at Celtic park I went and seen St Marys.
I am very much in the lapsed category of worshipper, and I didnt know what to expect, but the experience was wonderful.
Not difficult to imagine the Brothers wandering up and down that staircase, the foyer itself is spiritual.
At the time, the Howitson painting of Walfrid was on display, a quite stunning artwork, breath-taking.
After that first visit I have become a regular, anytime I am in the east end, and with dozens and dozens of foreign visitors, I always take them here first and share the origins and history BEFORE going to a game or just the park.
It is special, my routine now is I actually drive past on way to every game, I was there for both the 2nd Rangers game and the Hearts game, and against Lask, I stop, give a wee thanks at the memorial,
file under – you couldnt make it up …………….

I think you make a very fine point here Nabbla. The support – or sections of it – willingly accepted one form of cheating but not the other. Why?
However, I think the answer remains the same for Celtic the football business….we follow the money.
Nabbla,
Have you noticed the percentage of posters, even just today, who insist Celtic should have acknowledged the truth (The Huns died) and questioned what we were being asked to go along with?
I don’t think any of us were expecting Celtic to leave Scottish football over it, but we certainly didn’t expect the club to act like nothing out the ordinary was taking place.
Not only did Dermot think it was the right move to act like the whole event didn’t merit action of any type, he then felt the need to tell us how wonderful the Huns are!
Nah buddy, the club done the wrong thing, of that there’s not a shred of doubt.
There doesn’t appear to be any middle-ground here so, I’m happy to leave it there.

That’s false equivalence bullshit, intended to muddy the waters.
One was an event, the other is a continual process.
One was existential, the other is not.
One occurred when Celtic were dominant, the other, for the greater part of its existence, did not.

Ernie.it happened.they died.
Thanks for the ‘oh dear’ I keep that for every time you jump on the jobby and you are covered in it.
You do understand the difference between corporate opinion(which you fail to give any evidence of) and personal opinion.

My answer is yes.
Just a simple y or n will suffice no counterfactual arising narratives lols.

The other point of course, which is so obvious that I didn’t mention it, is that it is completely untrue that the support ever accepted any of those things. It’s also debatable when, and to what extent, the club did.

You’ve well and truly jumped the shark with that comment.
No offence, but I think you’re out of your depth on this.
You have your views, fine, let’s just leave it at that.

How is cheating by the SFA and refs in Celtic games a false equivalent?
It happened, we witnessed it many times, are we now to believe we were just paranoid and the only helping hand the Huns ever got was self inflicted via EBTs and tax avoidance?
Do we forget about the likes of Farry, McCurry, Gordon Smith, Dougie McDonald, Campbell Ogilvie, Crawford Allan, all working to their own agendas?
What about continual home cup ties for the Huns? Huns 74 games without conceding a penalty?
I could go on. Cheating is cheating.
Existential indeed.

Hi BAD
Yup I noticed a few and answered some.
WE ARE CELTIC BAD.
Do you need telt the huns deided themselves? I suspect not.You know as I do they ended themselves by their own deed.
Thats where i am at.If you are Celtic you walk around it and dont wrestle with the pig
BAD Dermot did not thin̈k it right to move-he did,we do not comment on the cheat.thats the move BAD,no counterfactual bolted to adjoining the latest narrative.a consistent one for the foreseeable
I do not think the club done the wrong thing, they know their enviroment(wee bit hostile lol)they done the right thing then,now,10,50,100 years hence.
If we had commented we would become part of the story, why it happened, more paranoia than a meeting at Carstairs group meet.na as I said leave them to their pristine corrupted, they own it,my Celtic are untouched, leave them to their liquidation and their fantasies to fit.It happened.

Given that Celtic still exists today, and indeed achieved their greatest success when some of those issues were most in evidence, they clearly were not existential.
Indeed their sectarian signing policy probably benefitted Celtic.
And the mad cap tax evasion was their undoing.
So, as I said, false equivalence, a well known debating tactic when you’ve little else in your armoury.

I worked for BT for 40 years. I was with Sky for over a decade and stayed loyal to them even when BT Sport started up. However, that came to an abrupt end when I learned that Scots, who we were 8% of the UK population, were 15% of Sky’s customer base.
It infuriated me to think of the pittance they paid out to SPL clubs compared to the vast sums to EPL clubs.
This was at the time when we beat Barcelona 2-1 and the following summer we lost Forster, Hooper and Wanyama to EPL teams pouring over the Border with OUR money in their pockets!
I told Sky to go fcuk themselves and went to BT. However, a couple of years after I retired they sickened me by billing me £150 for an engineers visit due to my BB hub being faulty which they claimed was down to my house alarm being connected wrongly into the BT socket. Pointing out that it had been there for 8 years cut no ice despite appealing so I left them too.
I went back to Sky where I have the basic package and now acquire my sporting coverage from…ahem…alternative means.
I read earlier on X that it would cost each of us £850 pa to have access to all of our games this season! It’s beyond a joke now!
Another proud day for the Rangers

You’ ve clearly convinced yourself that one form of cheating was okay, since Celtic had success under it,( we’ll ignore the 80/90s early 00 though) but that the other form of cheating isn’t okay , even though we’ve had more success because of it?
That’s some mental gymnastics your doing there fella. Fair play to you.
As for me , if I’m in Glasgow and Celtic are playing, I’ll be there. Might even buy some new tops in the club shop too.
HH
Ps. Glad you’ve dropped the absurd notion that it was existential.
I will be watching tomorrow night but like many of our fans who think its all over, i have an entirely different point of view . Although we played very very well it cant mask the fact that lask are a good outfit as was shown early doors last wednesday . When offside came to our rescue twice . We now do have the quality to score goals but we are a bit careless in defence and certainly in midfield , i hope young colby can show us wednesday wasnt a one off ,he had a grand game but im still a tad worried for our right defence ,AJ will be a miss ,but .hope to god im proved wrong . If we qualify we may see some new bits of quality, lose and i fear its as you were ..
For those struggling to understand what the term ‘counter factual narrative’ means and who unknowingly but ironically indulge in their own counter factual narrative in the process, this is an example of what it is. I hope this helps, though I doubt it will.

Since missing the penalty in the cup final against Aberdeen. AJ has played 13 times and been injured twice. All in all 870 minutes of football in 15 months. I don’t think we’ll miss him that much. Tends to be posted missing at the back post often in Europe.

OK, so we’ve had false equivalence, and now we’re on to strawman.
There’s a long list of logical fallacies, and it will interesting to see how many you engage in.
Heck I might even start playing logical fallacy bingo.
SF 49ers pleading “no contest” what a surprise
The nabbla,
The only thing Celtic said about the demise of the Hun was, what position do you want us in when we drop our drawers?
I’m not sure how anyone can defend Desmond over his sickening praise of the very institution that cheated us , and absolutely dispise us, but to me he’s a fucking rat.
Celtic was here long before these creeps appeared, and Celtic will be here long after they are all dust …they are just passing through!
I can totally understand why a percentage of Scottish football fans walk away from the game.
Chelsea 1-0 up in 30 seconds.
For every person who ” walked away” more than one replaced them.
Scottish football has never been in ruder health this new century . Indeed the debate on here ( and elsewhere, only further highlights the national obsession with the domestic game. You may indeed leave Celtic, and that’s okay…but Celtic never leaves you.

That’s true but the customer base is an ever aging customer base. Less money in exploiting youth but they are going to have to bite the bullet someday and engage.
AWE NAW might be interested in this. No idea if this guy is correct or not. If he is, it is pretty underhanded, and Eintracht should inform UEFA of it.

Yes, like most of society in Scotland ( and western Europe for that matter) the majority of the population is over 40yrs old.
However, there’s certainly more females and younger kids at games now than ever before, so as long as the price is contained to reflect current earnings trends and demographics, then I think we’re probably 25yrs from a drop off on the other side.

I’m only reflecting the upward trend in attendances and the ability to access football over a number of platforms from YouTube to Patreon, blogs, forums to Twitter and elsewhere.
It’s never been more popular.
Just because you’ve physically shut yourself off from it since 2012 , didn’t mean everyone else did, especially clubs not connected to Glasgow.
SL,
Over 60% of Scottish football spectators are over 55. Compared to any other country in Europe that’s highly unusual. I’ll give you 10 years

the scottish game is in a good place in purely domestic sense.
less in debt, highest attendances, highest levels of season book sales, highest sell out for clubs hospitality.

Unfortunately, they look great going forward.

I agree.
When I say ten years I mean the disaffected youth and the prices they have to pay for that football. Again one of the most expensive in Europe considering the quality and facilities on offer.
The other issue is that without European participation then there is no profit in Scottish football. That either needs addressed or there will be a decline in quality and facilities.
Banking the money for a rainy day is only a stop gap solution.

So sporting integrity wasn’t one of your metrics, which was to be expected.
But I thought the quality of what was on offer might have featured.
Out of interest, if you were to judge the current state of Scottish football by its quality, how would you rate the rate it?
Out of interest, if you were to judge the current state of Scottish football by its quality, how would you rate the rate it?
—————
Well and Falkirk a great watch last season.
Celtic exciting games.
rangers and hearts, winning-ish football until it really mattered.
all in an exciting leagye.
what more do supporters want ?
attendances reflect the willingness of support for the product on show.
For the major Scottish clubs, being a season-ticket holder is deliberately used as a mechanism for giving supporters priority access to European tickets home and away.
Motherwell out
Hearts out
Hibs will hibs it
Huns have to overcome a 1.0 deficit away from home
Celtic 3 up but still not certain but this year they have the EL next year maybe not !!!
So ST’s become less attractive. Yet ticket prices and pie and pizza prices will have to increase to compensate for the massive loss of European income and the UEFA hand outs. Players wages will have to come down meaning less quality players being attracted to the league. Better players that punters pay to see will be sold and replaced with inferior quality. The graffiti on the new mural will not be painted over etc.
Was last year an outlier seeing the fenians getting beat ? And the Old Firm not winning the league?
How did we do at the World Cup?
I’ll say this in Sentinelcelts parlance anyone who thinks the Scottish game is in a good state needs their heid examined
