Give Us A Break!

Morning, all.

Tonight is a big night for us, and no mistake. We take a three goal lead to Austria to face their champions, LASK Linz. I mention that they are champions to remind us all that this is no diddy team we are facing, but we already know that from the first leg last week.

We scored three wonderful goals, but they could have taken the lead after only a few seconds with an absolute screamer of their own. It was far from the only time they caused us concern, including another goal, like that one correctly chalked off for offside. I wouldn’t go as far as their coach did after the game and say that they were the better side, but we could hardly have grumbled had our advantage been less than three.

There seems to be a school of thought amongst our fans that while this tie isn’t over, another goal from us should kill it. Well, if there is a genuine concern that they can score three, perhaps we should also be worried that they can score four-and the reported absence from training of Trusty does little to allay those fears! I well remember our run to Seville when we took a two goal lead to Stuttgart and quickly scored another two. That four goal advantage should have had us on easy street, but we lost three goals and were hanging on grimly at the end.

It’s football, and we all know that there are no certainties!

I expect that the management team will go with the same starting XI as last week, though we may be forced to call on Scales as a replacement for Trusty. We will have to be ready for a full-on onslaught right from the off, and that means our midfield will have to work overtime, while our attacking line will be our first line of defence. It won’t be a night for passengers, that’s for sure. It will take 100% commitment and 100% concentration, and all the while being on the lookout for a chance at a break.

That said, and having given myself the fear even writing this short article, I’m looking forward to the game. We would have been delighted a week ago at the position we are in now, and if I’m honest, I’ll settle for any result which sees us in the group stages of the top competition. I don’t care if tonight is another classic, one which we will be talking about for years to come, or an updated version of The Great Escape. Just as long as it has a happier ending. So you’ll pardon me if I don’t say-“Good luck!”

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!
We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

August 25, 2026 7:23 am

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details will be available on the dedicated page nearer to the beginning of the event on 17th September.

Same here! We have to bear in mind that fantasTIC run that M’oN brought us through to win the League Title, a seemingly impossible task we could hardly afford to drop a point thank’s to Desperate Dan, the Flower Pot man. Think about that winning mentality and the team spirit he created in that team with these very same players, only difference is the addition of some new excellent forward players, so, for me its – In Martin I Trust. COYBIG.

Victory In Europe: A seemingly impossible task, but the team did it. # 67 The Lisbon Lions.

‘Reality is hard for you’.

###

Not so hard that I have to pretend it doesn’t exist.

The reality is that Scottish football now operates on the basis that the huns didn’t die, that they continue as the same club and are entitled to the honours acquired before administration and liquidation.

That is what Scottish Football requires us to accept as reality.

Celtic have failed to challenge that narrative. They could have challenged it, but they didn’t.

That they didn’t might be because it suits Mr Desmond’s agenda for the Club. We all know that Mr Desmond is only a minority shareholder, and when he speaks as an individual he doesn’t speak for the plc. And we can chose to believe whether or not that is how things actually works in reality.

Personally I think anyone who believes that Celtic plc would do anything other than what Mr Desmond wants is full of shit.

Some of us are aware of the reality and find it unacceptable. Others aren’t aware of the reality and carry on as before. Others are aware of the reality but prefer to indulge in a fantasy, because the reality, and the consequences of accepting it, are is too harsh for them to deal with.

Rangers Died. End of.

New Rangers exist and were allowed to take the place of old Rangers as the game in Scotland was and has been run for their benefit.

Nonetheless, the death of Rangers meant the biggest losers would be to Celtic – it was proven correct as attendances nosedived (39,00 season books 14/15).

Revenue in 2015 was only £51m with a £4m loss. This is less than in 2011 when we finished 2nd to Old Rangers. As a club we were on an unsubstainable path.. not the 90s but not the 00s either.

Something needed to give and the easiest way out was domestically as we couldn’t ever bank on CL ( a sensible approach imo).

So, whilst we had a rebrand of the Glasgow Derby the Old Firm was our salvation. . A team called Rangers were there, they played in blue, at Ibrox and had the same rancid support. But crucially, they were financially hamstrung and of no threat to Celtic for at least a decade. And that’s proven to be correct, despite the odd COVID blip or so.

A decade after new Rangers entered the top flight , Celtic were sitting on £80m of cash reserves. Which, whilst preposterous, has proven that financially the club done the correct thing.

Admittedly, we could have been sitting on much more but ridiculously bad CL qualifying results to the likes of AEK or Almaty (amongst others) has ensured we haven’t.

Now , personnally, I preferred when the Huns were either dead or at worst in lower leagues, out of sight and mind. But my preference isn’t necessarily what’s good for Celtic. I’m not sure what else Celtic were expected to do? Why do Celtic always need to be the Judge and Jury of What’s best for the Scottish game? Our vote is the same as anyone else’s. I think that’s fair.

Nonetheless, we continue to thrive and operate well in what many consider a footballing backwater.

HH.

August 25, 2026 10:19 am

Regardless of what we think Celtic should or shouldn’t have done, it doesn’t change the fact Desmond turned out stomachs by praising the very people who had cheated us for years (Probably for decades) , and who absolutely despise us.

The Huns cheated because they know they really aren’t in the same league as us. On a level playing field we blow them out the water, so they felt they had to cheat to compete.

That’s not hard to understand.

But, what I will never understand is, why did king rat think it was a good idea to tell us how great the Huns are? Why not just continue the silence?

Oh, I’d bet money there’s lots of our fans who were utterly disgusted with how he praised the very institution that would bury us, given the opportunity.

August 25, 2026 10:39 am

Why?

Follow the money.

Our support love a Glasgow Derby just as much as theirs and just as much as TV audiences do.

It remains the only show in town and those who love money know this.

Billy Bhoy
August 25, 2026 10:41 am

Morning all

i can’t quite believe that on the day we play financially the biggest game in our history we are still arguing over the status of (historically) our biggest rivals!

Especially as I comprehensively laid this all out for you a few years back.

So, for those of you with short memories, perhaps due to suffering with COVID at the time – here’s a wee reminder of what i said about what went down in 2012…

Inspired by the 12 Days Of Christmas – I bring you the 12 days of Sevco. 12 events that show how we got from RFC to TRFC, each event adding a further layer to demonstrate that the club currently playing at Ibrox is NOT the same club that played there until May 2012.

1/ On Valentines Day eve in 2012 we finally received the news we had been expecting since Christmas time – Craig Whyte announces on the steps of Ibrox that RFC are going into administration.

2/ RFC are deducted 10 points due to going into Administration.

So, early evidence that it wasn’t the “Holding Company” or “Engine Room  Subsidiary” that was ultimately Liquidated!

3/ RFC complete the season and following this virtually every first team player empties their lockers and leaves Ibrox under freedom of contract – only 4 players TUPE over to Charles Green’s new club .

Naismith and Whittaker appear on TV stating that they have no intention of signing up to the new club – Sevco.

Meanwhile, fans of RFC hold a “show liquidation the red card day” and then march to Hampden. I’m not quite sure if even they knew quite what they were marching for.

I’m pretty sure it wasn’t on account of a holding company no one has ever been made aware of.

4/  Charles Green (CG) sets up Sevco Scotland Ltd and tries to gain access to the SPFL. 12 teams – including RFC – vote and it’s overwhelmingly denied despite the best efforts of  Stewart (social unrest) – (SFA) and N Doncaster (SPL) .

5/  ND, SR and CG then try and have Sevco admitted to The Championship. This attempt is also thwarted, thanks to the efforts of Turnbull Hutton and Co.

They are eventually accepted into the fourth tier of Scottish Football – without the mandatory 3 years of audited Accounts.

6/ RFC are unable to honour a Testimonial match against Kelty Hearts as “neither the original or new club currently holds a License to play football” according to the Kelty Secretary.

7/ Sevco (now TRFC) acquire an unprecedented “Temporary License “ allowing them to compete in the Ramsden Cup. (There is no precedent for what we are trying to achieve- Doncaster)

8/ TRFC are not put forward to represent Scotland in European competition despite RFC finishing second in the SPL the previous season.

This shows that the SFA are  treating TRFC as a NEW CLUB.

9/ TRFC are not seeded in the League Cup.

This shows that the SPFL are treating TRFC as a NEW CLUB.

10/ TRFC are not seeded in the Scottish Cup. All 12 SPL clubs from the previous season should be seeded. Instead, Livingston who finished 5th in the Championship are given a bye due to the disappearance of RFC.

This shows that the SFA are once again treating Sevco as a NEW CLUB.

11/ Rangers men line up to “wish the new club every success” including Walter Smith, Richard Gough, Mark Hately and Donald Finlay who says “the new club must create it’s own history”.

12/ Andrew Traverso at UEFA writes to Celtic Shareholders advising them that there was no need to impose sanctions on  the Ibrox club “as the NEW CLUB/COMPANY were ineligible to compete in Europe for three years in any case”.

That’s a pretty emphatic statement from UEFA -and this letter was CC’D to Celtic and the SFA – that they are being treated as a NEW CLUB.

Isn’t it absolutely incredible that ALL of the above – except no 12 of course – was widely reported in the SMSM at the time yet we are constantly bombarded with “55” this and “Old Firm” that?

Perhaps, one day, we’ll all wake up and it will all have been a bad dream eh?

And if all of the above isn’t enough I’d remind you that Celtic DID make a very strong statement about the status of the hun by declaring in the Celtic View that “Gary Hooper scored the last goal in the final Old Firm match”. Now, OK, it may have been buried somewhere in page 67 of the View – but at least it’s there. Although I accept that it may have been washed away by Despots subsequent statement.

Now, on to tonight’s game. I’ve just returned from holiday. Is the game not on TNT tonight as well as Amazon Prime?

Excellent summary. I don’t think anyone on here doubts there’s a new club. I think we’re getting into semantics of the why DD said what he said and some things Ernie posted last night too

Again, I say follow the money..

As for tonight, no Trusty so Scales returns. This means the high line needs to drop back a bit and our shape needs to be more compact as a result of the lack of pace. They will score but as long as it’s not too early and we don’t concede a second immediately afterwards then I think we’ll get the job done.

2-2.

At the time there was no issue with saying the huns had died.

Celtic could have done what the Cardigan did and simply wished the new club every success, “We wish the new Rangers Football Club every good fortune” ‘, and left it at that.

Nothing confrontational, triumphalist or hostile about it. Just a straightforward acknowledgement of the facts, that a page had been turned and a new future awaited.

Why didn’t they do that?

I’d suggest it was because it didn’t suit Mr Desmond’s agenda.

Great post, maybe Bobby & MAHE could post Points 1-12 with every new article like the charity and racing Links 😁

Nabbla, below is why we should never let them forget:

Had the misfortune to run into a rabid old female hun in Traders Bar on Saturday. Boasting about drinking in a Celtic pub – who cares? Someone, not me, mentioned her team was deid. Well, she then went off on a mad explanation of how her cousin had spent thousands proving they didnae die, WTAF. Before I could say to her that her cousin would soon be bankrupted like the huns a seat became available in the Lounge. 😁

As for DD and his tribute re the huns. If I remember correctly, he was (surprised/highjacked) by the Scottish Press on the golf course just after the Huns were Liquidated. Well, if it had been me, I would have went right through them not missing a thing but, he’s not me. I can slightly understand his response surprising though it was.

Having said that, I would still like him to leave our club.
