Over the hill FC

It was disgusting and like Derek deserves punishment.
It was the biggest collapse since the Twin Towers fell.
It was a masterclass from one manager, unfortunately not ours.

Where does the blame lie?
Just take a metaphorical Blunderbus, point it at the club and pull the trigger, the vast spray would hit everyone to blame, and I’m adamant everyone is to blame.

I should start at the top and not only did they only commence business in July due to the annual accounts but they also dragged every deal out to a ridiculous extent. The due diligence on discovering Ox was banned in Europe must also fall at their feet. The biggest.charge against them in my eyes is neglect, no “good at their job/know their job” employee should allow the first team squad to become so devoid of depth nevermind quality as it has become. They have delivered four quality players but as we all found out, thats not enough. They failed in their duty to (regardless of manager) ensure we had a minimum number of players worthy of the name and once again failed the biggest test of the season.

The manager and coaches ultimately failed, stating the obvious, one might say there were multiple failures.
First between the Ox and the Arne situation signing another midfielder alongside Baur before the registration deadline was imperative. He either didn’t grasp that or push it through strongly enough or he wrongly thought we had enough in house.
Last week we weren’t the better team but took our chances better yet Martin changed nothing. The younger manager took him to the cleaners by playing 10 of the previous 11, but crucially altering the gameplan.

After 5 minutes the camera panned to our touchline and Shaun was using his hands to give the manager his version of their tactics. The gaffer didn’t look interested and just sat down, rather than yell instructions etc. Maybe Martin was right as 4 times he watched his players spring and score and usually that would be enough. Maybe Shaun was right in that we should have responded to their new system which was Route 1 plus winning the second balls through committing in numbers.

The manager said there would be no complacency but it was exactly that which caused our downfall. After being outplayed at home yet emerging winners, with their manager publicly stating that to the press and therefore his players all week, it was blindingly clear they were going all out attack and we needed to be mentally switched on for the sure as the sun rises onslaught. We rode our luck rather than being masters of our own destiny.

Each “almost” gave them hope and again their manager had neutralized last week’s danger men for instance keeping two around Hogh and Duran. Their energy, drive, and simple willingness to just bloody go for it had us on the ropes and for whatever reason a tactical adjustment never entered the equation. Reo and Luke arent tactics but sticking plasters. Martin came with faith in his men, but not any new strategy.

With a lack of legs in midfield, plus Callum and Baur pinned back, they had the run of the middle and it was either a long range shot or a lightning cross that always seemed to find its man. Their huge striker had much joy dragging a defender usually KT towards the goal then retreating into the space he just left and repurposing the ball in a very dangerous area. Something needed done, two banks of 5, anything, the manager failed in not changing things up and his subs were very questionable. I suggest it wasn’t just the opposition manager that got the best of him but also his health given he didnt get crazy on the sidelines as our hopes faded.

Martin accepted the responsibility, and so did Callum which is handy as they owed it, they don’t get off scott free on this, not at all. They bottled it and instead of a spine of leaders galvanizing the troops they searched for any leader on the park, none of the 16 passed the test. The way I feel today I would happily discard everyone in the squad bar the summer buys and start from scratch under new leadership. The collapse is made more inexplicable given they regularly beat R2ngers at Ibrox and Hampden in front of bigger and louder crowds. The spirit that drove us to an unlikely double not long ago was completely absent, and thats a worry.

So thats where my blame lies, the scattergun approach in which everyone is part guilty and rather than one massive fracture our multiple weak points collectively forced an implosion when placed under enough pressure. If we had strengthened some of those weak points this collapse would be less likely to unlikely. It wasn’t that our luck ran out, its that all our flaws were exposed all at once.

My final point is more than likely the deciding factor in the tie.
A neutral observer would surely tell you that LASK were the “hungrier” team over the 2 legs.
Take a look across our squad and ask yourself is the real hunger still burning?
CCV, Trusty, Callum,KT, AJ, Tony, James, Benji,,,,and even Martin,,,,the medal cabinet is well stocked,,the body is saying relax,,the good life of retirement and enjoying your substantial wealth awaits.
Those Lask boys were not only on a personal crusade to say yes I played in a famous comeback game, but also to say I played in the Champions League and don’t forget the life-changing bonuses involved. Thats why they won, they were more hungry for it and so they outran us, out-thought us, and then when they had us on the ropes they outscored us.
We have been recruiting 24 and under players who have looked hungry, that needs to be repeated over multiple windows to fill the squad full of younger hungry players who want to taste success rather than a team of old warriors who have had the medals, with stories and the battlescars to show. On my fingers I just counted 11 players who will not be improving from this point, with another two possible additions,,,thats basically half the squad that won’t get better?
Those on the way up generally show more hunger so whilst I also appreciate the future profit I personally like the idea of going to the Balkans and Columbia etc where they are desperate to make it.

Too many of our team are over the hill, the manager is also, and it showed. Our best bet is buying a few good players, bringing in the best youngsters, get some excitement going while winning the SPL at least and hopefully using the lesser lights of the Europa League as a platform to create some positive vibes around the season and bring us to next season with some momentum and something to look forward to ie improving players and front foot football. The alternative doesn’t bare thinking about.

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!

We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details will be available on the dedicated page nearer to the beginning of the event on 17th September.

SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2025-26*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #5 LASK 5 CELTIC 1 (a.e.t.) (McGregor)*

Good evening, friends.

As usual, I took copious notes in real time during the game in anticipation of a full match report. But they ended up literally ripped to shreds so I’m going to keep this one very brief indeed.

An absolutely disastrous outcome from where we were after McGregor fired us ahead in the 21st minute. We had started the game pretty well and, scoring first, surely meant that the tie was over? But when Nygren provided his 4th assist of the season with a perfect pass to the Lask striker the alarm bells should have rung louder than they did. We held out until half time and would surely regroup to make sure we were hard to break down in the second half? Instead, we did the opposite! And with Lask having scored 2 more goals by the 58th minute the only remaining surprise was that it took until the 89th to finally draw level and send the game into extra time.

The first half of extra time saw us regain a little of our composure and things briefly looked brighter. But that didn’t last long and 3 minutes after the extra time break we went behind for the first time in the tie to a very avoidable goal – winning a good tackle then dilly dallying on the baw isn’t what Champions League qualifying is all about!

So it’s the Europa League for Celtic and we wait to see the effect that last night’s failure has on our remaining potential signings. Sever deals were apparently well advanced but would it surprise anyone if those particular players now had a change of heart?

Celtic have now played 5 games, winning 4 and losing 1. We have scored 14 and conceded 6.

As for the voting numbers, it was heartwarming to see so many of you sending in your opinions after what was a very disappointing night. I never expected to get anywhere near the numbers of the first 4 games but my sincere thanks to the 72 folk who provided their nominations. Arithmetically the votes won’t reconcile to that as not everybody could provide 3 names, whilst 1 voter did make me smile by suggesting that our ‘least bad’ players were Hassan, Forrest and Kenny. Of course, votes can only be awarded to players who took to the field.

And so to the results. Interesting that 10 of our 11 starters were all nominated by at least 2 voters.

All about opinions right enough. The total votes cast for each player (with my own nominations asterisked) are as follows –

Sinisalo: 24
Donovan: 24
Carter Vickers: 8
Trusty: 3
Tierney*: 18
McGregor*: 54
Baur: 16
Nygren: 0
Duran: 2
Høgh: 5
Yang*: 25
Tounekti: 0
Hatate: 12
Scales: 13
McCowan: 0
Murray: 4
Ralston: 0
Unused subs: Balikwisha, Doohan, Forrest, Hassan, Kenny, Osmand

And so, the POINTS earned by each player for the game against Lask are as follows –
25 – McGregor
22 – Yang
19 each – Donovan and Sinisalo
14 – Tierney
12 – Baur
11 – Scales
10 – Hatate
9 – Carter-Vickers
8 – Høgh
7 – Murray
6 – Trusty
5 – Duran
3 each – Nygren, McCowan, Ralston, Tounekti
1 each – Balikwisha, Doohan, Forrest, Hassan, Kenny and Osmand

And the CUMULATIVE POINTS after 5 games played are as follows –
79 – McGregor and Nygren
79 – Duran
69 – Tierney
67 – Donovan
60 – Carter-Vickers and Høgh
52 – Sinisalo and Yang
46 – Trusty
37 – Tounekti
33 – Baur
30 – Engels
23 – Scales
21 – McCowan
18 – Hatate
17 – Johnston
16 – Forrest
14 – Murray and Oxlade-Chamberlain
10 – Hassan
9 – Osmand
8 – Ralston
5 – Doohan
2 – Balikwisha and Kenny

It’s back to League action for our next game this coming Saturday. A rare home 3.00pm kick off against Falkirk. I can’t say that I’m yet getting excited by it…
Hail Hail!

Hi MAHE:
All good points, mate, but many on here were pointing out these weaknesses well before the game. I was categorical about it. “As presently constituted, this team will not beat LASK.”

Let’s look at the defence element of the squad.

Johnston-Sick note.
Donovan-Uncoached naif.
Ralston-Years past his best, which was poor.
CCV-Sick note and carthorse.
Trusty-Pussy.
Scales-Honest trier, that’s it.
Murray-No hoper.
Tierney-70 minute gamer.

When KT drops out, we put in Scales. Anybody think he is better than Saracchi? It was lunacy to let the Uruguayan go.

Don’t get me started on midfield. Letting Engels go without a replacement in the door was lunacy. McCowan should be let go, tomorrow. Giving him a contract extension was lunacy. Hatate should be let go, and Nygren booted up the arse.

Up front, The Tenacious Tounekti ( what a joke ) who was in my opinion, the worst player who played in the World Cup, equal with Shankland, should be punted forthwith, as should Balikwisha, a total waste of a jersey. This will create space in the Europa Squad, and these spaces need to be filled by signings or loans within days, more signings in a week than this panel of Board fuckwits have signed since the Cup Final. I don’t expect it will happen. And if it doesn’t happen, we will be an unbalanced, ramshackle wreck, even weaker than we were last season.

MON’s set up and decision making was atrocious but I am not going to criticize the man, because to me, he looked very unwell after the game. I fear that the future pummelings we will get to the likes of maybe Juventus, Benfica et al will be very damaging to his health.

Here’s a prediction. If, despite 13 incomers, McKlopp does not survive at Sevco, the next manager they will attempt to sign with be Dietmar Kuhbauer of LASK. He saw through us in a heartbeat.

Hi MAHE:

Here’s a very brief scouting report. 😊

Bodo/Glimt decided not to bring in a replacement for Kasper Hogh by transfer after they punted him to us. Knutsen turned to internal squad depth, and asked Andreas Helmersen to take over through the Champions League qualifiers. He’s 28 years old, a 6’3” left footer, and a former Norwegian international U-21.

He really responded well. When Høgh was benched during transfer negotiations then departed, Helmersen hit form right away as the focal point of the attack. In the qualifying round against Union Saint-Gilloise, Helmersen came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 117th minute of extra time and added an assist to drag Bodø/Glimt through.

In the play-off round against NEC Nijmegen, he started both legs. He scored an away goal in the first leg and played 80 minutes in the second leg, helping Bodø/Glimt seal an emphatic 6–1 aggregate.

Helmersen carried that momentum into the League games. He scored two against HamKam when he first took over the number nine jersey from Høgh. He then scored another goal away against Vålerenga and provided an assist against Sandefjord. He now has 11 goals in 23 games. He seems to have proved to Knutsen that he could seamlessly replace both Høgh’s goalscoring and his holdup play. Now Bodo are guaranteed yet more Champions League income, it is possible that Knutsen could augment his forward line options before September 3, but I couldn’t even find any rumors to that effect.

Wouldn’t it be great if we had a squad depth where when say, Engels is punted, we just promote a squad player, it’s a seamless transition, and it’s as if nothing ever happened? Bodo are supremely organized, like a mini army of 25 players, and every one can do a job. We have Tounektis, Balikwishas, Murrays and Ralstons. And when KT goes off, nearly every frigging game, we literally have no one. What a fecking shambles! It really grinds my gears when I take a detailed look at other teams that are professionally run, and the differences smack me right in the chops.

I found 2 of MON’s post match statements depressing:

”We are a million miles from where we need to be.”

”This will have an effect on prospective players who want to play in the Champions League.”

What does the first statement say about our recruitment, and Board support of their manager?

And what does the second say about the players we are rumored to be chasing?

I was glad that Despot witnessed the debacle in Linz. That is unusual, and it will be very interesting to see how he reacts. He certainly did not look best pleased! Pity he didn’t can the Shrugging Mute immediately, as be should have done.

“The alternative doesn’t bare thinking about.”

The alternative is very much more than likely.
LASK are an EL level outfit, got lucky being drawn against perennial play-off weak minded/ under prepared losers and handed us a total scudding. We are not only fragile physically and mentally, we are rudderless.
The reality is a barrel scraping squad featuring, in the foreseeable future, a defence of
Ralston Trusty Scales KT, with Murray replacing KT after 70 mins and Scales going to left back.
A fucking mess and disgrace.

Do you see us signing a keeper, right back, centre back, left back in the next week?
Perhaps a rushed loan or two?

That’s in tandem with sorting out the porous rudderless midfield. Another three in there required. McCowan and Hatate can go anytime.

We will be the Pot 2 EL team everyone will be hoping for. A perfunctory win if drawn at home by the opposition and a more than possible scalp away.

The alternative does Bear thinking about.
It’s a descent into Conference league level humiliation. Where, like Hearts, we will be bounced out of two competitions before emerging amongst the also rans and unpronounceables of backwater Europe.
Assuming we even make CL qualification next season.

That is very much a grim reality, unless the gombeen man and his hirelings make a conscious effort to stop the rot now.

Hoop hoop hooray

I know someone had to come out on top of jobos pile but I am astounded of forehead that it was McGregor.
The extension of the coaching team on the field, the guy who is supposed to organise that shambles and our defensive mid who is supposed to patrol the area where 4 of the goals were scored from. Astonishing.

August 27, 2026 7:43 am

Great lead, Mahe.

Not a lot to add to that. This was a collective failure that, whilst structural in its cause, was completely undermined by both players and Manager at a point when we were 4-0 up and only had to revert to spoiling tactics, time wasting and feighning fouls to record an historic away victory.

What happened next will scar the Celtic psyche for years to come.

Bored by the board
August 27, 2026 8:46 am

As usual, press conferences around any team in Scotland seem to be haunted by journalists who have no idea regarding the relevant questions.
After the humiliation on Tuesday, five obvious questions sprung to mind. 1. You spent weeks pursuing Hassans signature. He came on in a cameo role in the first leg and held the ball well and frustrated LASK, why wasn’t he involved in the second leg?
2.Why did the club give Anthony Ralston a new contract when by your actions last night he appears to be 4th choice at right back?
3.What was the reason for not being able to sign Sarrachi. It seemed an absolute free hit so I would assume there was a problem?
4 With the opposition on Tuesday night playing an obvious long ball game did you consider maybe at half time, bringing on Liam Scales who is combative in the air and changing your formation?
5 Do you think that a greater degree of urgency should have been used in trying to bring in a defensive midfielder?
Those might have been a bit more interesting guys.

Nawrocki / Saracchi may have been on modest wages, but you can bet that Dane Murray and Liam Scales (auxiliary LB) will be on more modest wages.

By MoN own admission we’ve cut wages from last season (having cut wages before that from the 24/25 season), not to mention a tidy net receivable on our transfer business to date.

We’re in a loop of resolutely refusing to have a net transfer spend.

As a Europa/Conference League club for the foreseeable, it’s probably not the worst thing in the world to trim wages of the highest earners. For example , Iheanacho was looking for the guts of £20k PW after tax , so that made sense.

However, we’re going to have to sign a full back and a centre back and I reckon both will be on more than either Nawroki or Sarrachi were. That makes no sense.

Furthermore, if the club has a long term strategy, then for the love of God tell the support exactly what it is? If it’s to become a medium level European club that tries to emulated the likes smaller Alpine or Scandinavian teams, then please just tell us that? Even if it means most of our purchases are going to be in that level £4 to £6m, bolstered by youth and experience.

At the moment,I haven’t a bloody clue, it all seems scattergunned and haphazardly.

“And I was on the pitch, checking the pitch, and the Hibs guys were flapping. They said, ‘No bid. They’ve no bid.’ So in my head, my head’s fried. Neil Lennon said, ‘What do you want to do? I’ll support you. Do you want to play or not?’ And I said, ‘I’ll play.’

“So I just played the game. I managed to score that night, and then I think I signed for Villa 10 days later.”

McGinn believes Celtic’s hierarchy did not take Aston Villa’s interest seriously enough, assuming his affection for the club would ensure he remained available. He said: “They’ve done that with quite a few players.

“I think if I wasn’t Scottish, if I wasn’t a Celtic fan, if they thought a team would come in, they probably would have just done it. But I don’t think they believed my agent at the time when he said, ‘If Villa get a takeover, they’re coming in.’

“I think they thought it was a bluff for more money or anything like that. I bet they took me for granted, which at the time, I couldn’t quite understand.”

McGinn had spoken with then-Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers and was willing to fight for his place alongside Scott Brown and Callum McGregor. He said: “Brendan said, ‘You’ll have to come in and compete,’ but you back yourself.

“I was excited to go there, but then Steve Bruce called and said, ‘Get on a flight.’”

Calmac got 3rd spot for me purely for his first 32 minutes. When the performances are that poor and we have to look a crumb of positivity, that’s the only data I could use to get there. The remainder of his game was chronic but maybe not as chronic as some others.
Maybe he had a lot of 3rd spots although I know Jobo doesn’t base the outcome on 1st 2nd and 3rd, just whoever’s name appears the most 🤷
Perhaps Jobo should devise a worst top three option when we have nights like these, cause as things stand, there will be more to come.

We’re not long off the back of 3 years of direct qualification to the CL, with a cash balance of £77m 3 years running (against a £20m cash outlay on the Barrowfield redevelopment) – on a financial level, we’re very clearly not a Europa/Conference League club.

I would not have re-signed KI (as he was an emergency purchase given inability to replace Idah), but that doesn’t mean we should lower wages / reduce investment. We’re setting ourselves up for a downward spiral across all levels.

Re business plan – why anchor yourself with clear and concise objectives? You’ve then set a target against which your performance can be judged and which you may fail to achieve – depending on extent of failure – thereby evidencing your incompetence.

I’m sure the leaked meeting this summer with the Irish CSCs included references to a 5 year plan. I’ll have to try and find but as memory serves, it was completely nebulous, so you could argue either way we’ve succeeded, regardless of outcome.

As for emulating Scandi / Alpine clubs – unsure the directors would be willing to vocalise the Club’s desire to emulate teams with a pittance of our resources and financial might; their actions evidence their incompetence in a clear enough fashion – no need to over do it with a mission statement.

Did you know that King Desmond was so angry at the time Nicholson was taking to conclude transfers that he dispatched Nepo boy Ross D to sort out the mess, which he allegedly did?

Also, McCowen handed a contract extension because he’s a Scot. Sadly factual, apparently.

PS. Ross D for chairman rumour?

Good afternoon, friends.

I’ve had my usual lunchtime scroll back and would like to make a few moments on the POTY/MOTM results.

Firstly, and most importantly for me, it is only a wee bit of modestly time consuming fun. I collate the nominations to hopefully ignite debate. This is nota personal attack on anyone but I’m always intrigued by folk expressing surprise at particular votes but not taking the chance to affect that by voting themselves. Numbers are always lower when Celtic fail to win but nevertheless, someone has to come out as the best of a bad bunch and get the 25 MOTM points And anyway, Calmac was one of my own 3 choices!

As to the suggestion of voting for the worst 3, actually that does happen indirectly. 4 of our players didn’t received a single vote. Now, it’s possible that some of them may well have been folks’ 4th nomination if that was allowed. However, it’s much more likely that the players on nil votes were indeed our poorest performers. That’s not the same thing as saying they played bad. It’s just that every single voter thought that 3 other players played better.

I’ll finish where I started – it’s just a bit of fun. And whenever 70 readers vote following a performance like that it cheers me up no end!

Hopefully Saturday’s performance generates more interest in voting.

Have to say that I doubt McGinn will be getting a Christmas card from Celtic in future. His interview isn’t telling us anything we didn’t know, but the timing of it reminds us of why we are where we are.

I seem to recall that CQN lead a few articles at the time telling us that we didn’t need him in 2018 after two successive rebels, and that we could pick him up for free the following year or for peanuts in January.

Another example of the smartest man in the room being, erm, outsmarted.

Business plan?

We are run as a pound shop dictatorship, if you don’t like what we’re selling move along because our faithful core customer base lap up our products.
We don’t need no stinkin’ plan.

Last season’s near disaster has created a necessary small flurry of activity, based on sales approaching £40m.
7/8 recruits are still urgently needed.
Maybe 3/4 will arrive? Expect the loan market to do the heavy lifting.

Once the Huns sort out their best matchday 16 from the dozens available, and in spite of the limited McInnes, they will be our main challenger.
Two consecutive weekends in September will tell us if we’re in car crash mode or simply
the best in a poor man’s competition.

That didn’t just happen did it ?

A wee bhoy was once asked by his father, there are two games we could go to today! – Cambuslang Rangers or Parkhead to see Celtic Reserves which game should we go to ? The wee bhoy said who’s that team they call the Celtic? a story began, the rest is history in a long walk to and fro.

Anticipation and curiosity of our Champions League seat package, evaporated in extra time in leafy Linz, the ‘rich’ Celtic supporter doesn’t much fancy your seats verse Falkirk in Parkhead. You need to throw in a Real Madrid or such for the modern Celtic man. This is where the Celtic stalwart takes over, the Desmond’s get it, and sit back and whilst “from every street in Glasgow they proudly make their way?”

The big bad internet is to an extent for supporters to  support the supporters. Telling, teaching recounting history ‘this is the way you support Celtic’ here is my opinion listen, love Celtic ‘like what I do’ There’s even guys supporting Celtic for a living now or so we’re told, and here we are on a daily diary, that’s 24 / 7.

We were thrilled when Celtic made moves in the transfer market Duran, Hogh, Baur and Hassan seemed a long time coming. Who knows how long they were ear marked, let’s hope recruitment has changed and been modified. We are encouraged by the way Celtic hit goals away domestically, and surprised with three class goals in the first leg.

Automatic qualification to the CL is gone, our record of qualifying and going one step beyond just beating Rainjurz ( or Hartz ) is very poor given our our fan built resources. Celtic need more ambitious men to bridge that gap, a remit “ to do a bit better in Europe “ isn’t a plan. The tsunami when Celtic get beaten up in Europe ensues because  we seemingly can’t compete’ in a Cup that  was truly miraculously paraded in our stadium, a very a long time ago.

The wee bhoy was there too, now older, wiser and enriched by a Celtic life that set out a club, open to all. With the grace of god he’ll see Celtic beat Falkirk when Saturday comes, and the Marist miracle, will live on.

Hail Hail 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪

Will things ever get so bad that being truly Faithful Through and Through involves not renewing your season book?

It is possible for Celtic to win crucial matches in Europe….teams with lesser resources and poorer history of top level performance have demonstrated this….e.g LASK, Kairat, Ferencvaros etc.. This is what makes the latest failure hurt even more. Why has it happened yet again?

Most of the reasons, and there are many, have been listed by others on this blog.

Success is a package that evolves over time. It is the coming together of several factors that create the perfect storm. A mini, short term version of it happened in the last seven games of last season. Maeda’s goals; penalty decisions, team belief, results elsewhere etc combined to create an unlikely, happy event.

The key point here is not a single factor but a combination of them produces success, and also, its evil twin….failure.

Take LASK, they were languishing in their league the last two seasons until they hired the current coach. Bingo…they win their cup and league. They lose players at the end of the season and bring in new ones. Bingo…they qualify for the CL for the first time in their history. This is all from a club that has won their national league twice in its history against 32 wins for Rapid Vienna; 24 for Austria Vienna and 17 for RB Salzburg. How did they manage this? The short answer is they hired the correct coach and backed him. Kuhbaur has achieved substantial success with LASK against the odds. For example, the largest fee paid for a player is 1.8 million euros and the largest fee received is 5.5 million of those euro things. Can you see the eyes of our Board bulge at those incoming fees!

Is Kuhbaur’s approach, i.e. build a team, not a player, unique? Even more successful is Bodo/Glimt….a club that regularly performs well in Europe from a base support of 6000 and playing on a plastic pitch.

Curiously, both Knutsen and Kuhbaur are within two years of one another at 57 and 55 years, respectively. Their football experience seems to have peaked in their fifties. Another lesson to be learned, perhaps.

Again both managers have a track record of developing players as well as spotting bargains. Both are supported by senior management. Both have flexible systems that suit the squads that they either inherited or built.

How many of these determinants of success do you think Celtic possess?

Is there any potential downside (to them) of either of those clubs being successful in Europe?
