Over the hill FC
It was disgusting and like Derek deserves punishment.
It was the biggest collapse since the Twin Towers fell.
It was a masterclass from one manager, unfortunately not ours.
Where does the blame lie?
Just take a metaphorical Blunderbus, point it at the club and pull the trigger, the vast spray would hit everyone to blame, and I’m adamant everyone is to blame.
I should start at the top and not only did they only commence business in July due to the annual accounts but they also dragged every deal out to a ridiculous extent. The due diligence on discovering Ox was banned in Europe must also fall at their feet. The biggest.charge against them in my eyes is neglect, no “good at their job/know their job” employee should allow the first team squad to become so devoid of depth nevermind quality as it has become. They have delivered four quality players but as we all found out, thats not enough. They failed in their duty to (regardless of manager) ensure we had a minimum number of players worthy of the name and once again failed the biggest test of the season.
The manager and coaches ultimately failed, stating the obvious, one might say there were multiple failures.
First between the Ox and the Arne situation signing another midfielder alongside Baur before the registration deadline was imperative. He either didn’t grasp that or push it through strongly enough or he wrongly thought we had enough in house.
Last week we weren’t the better team but took our chances better yet Martin changed nothing. The younger manager took him to the cleaners by playing 10 of the previous 11, but crucially altering the gameplan.
After 5 minutes the camera panned to our touchline and Shaun was using his hands to give the manager his version of their tactics. The gaffer didn’t look interested and just sat down, rather than yell instructions etc. Maybe Martin was right as 4 times he watched his players spring and score and usually that would be enough. Maybe Shaun was right in that we should have responded to their new system which was Route 1 plus winning the second balls through committing in numbers.
The manager said there would be no complacency but it was exactly that which caused our downfall. After being outplayed at home yet emerging winners, with their manager publicly stating that to the press and therefore his players all week, it was blindingly clear they were going all out attack and we needed to be mentally switched on for the sure as the sun rises onslaught. We rode our luck rather than being masters of our own destiny.
Each “almost” gave them hope and again their manager had neutralized last week’s danger men for instance keeping two around Hogh and Duran. Their energy, drive, and simple willingness to just bloody go for it had us on the ropes and for whatever reason a tactical adjustment never entered the equation. Reo and Luke arent tactics but sticking plasters. Martin came with faith in his men, but not any new strategy.
With a lack of legs in midfield, plus Callum and Baur pinned back, they had the run of the middle and it was either a long range shot or a lightning cross that always seemed to find its man. Their huge striker had much joy dragging a defender usually KT towards the goal then retreating into the space he just left and repurposing the ball in a very dangerous area. Something needed done, two banks of 5, anything, the manager failed in not changing things up and his subs were very questionable. I suggest it wasn’t just the opposition manager that got the best of him but also his health given he didnt get crazy on the sidelines as our hopes faded.
Martin accepted the responsibility, and so did Callum which is handy as they owed it, they don’t get off scott free on this, not at all. They bottled it and instead of a spine of leaders galvanizing the troops they searched for any leader on the park, none of the 16 passed the test. The way I feel today I would happily discard everyone in the squad bar the summer buys and start from scratch under new leadership. The collapse is made more inexplicable given they regularly beat R2ngers at Ibrox and Hampden in front of bigger and louder crowds. The spirit that drove us to an unlikely double not long ago was completely absent, and thats a worry.
So thats where my blame lies, the scattergun approach in which everyone is part guilty and rather than one massive fracture our multiple weak points collectively forced an implosion when placed under enough pressure. If we had strengthened some of those weak points this collapse would be less likely to unlikely. It wasn’t that our luck ran out, its that all our flaws were exposed all at once.
My final point is more than likely the deciding factor in the tie.
A neutral observer would surely tell you that LASK were the “hungrier” team over the 2 legs.
Take a look across our squad and ask yourself is the real hunger still burning?
CCV, Trusty, Callum,KT, AJ, Tony, James, Benji,,,,and even Martin,,,,the medal cabinet is well stocked,,the body is saying relax,,the good life of retirement and enjoying your substantial wealth awaits.
Those Lask boys were not only on a personal crusade to say yes I played in a famous comeback game, but also to say I played in the Champions League and don’t forget the life-changing bonuses involved. Thats why they won, they were more hungry for it and so they outran us, out-thought us, and then when they had us on the ropes they outscored us.
We have been recruiting 24 and under players who have looked hungry, that needs to be repeated over multiple windows to fill the squad full of younger hungry players who want to taste success rather than a team of old warriors who have had the medals, with stories and the battlescars to show. On my fingers I just counted 11 players who will not be improving from this point, with another two possible additions,,,thats basically half the squad that won’t get better?
Those on the way up generally show more hunger so whilst I also appreciate the future profit I personally like the idea of going to the Balkans and Columbia etc where they are desperate to make it.
Too many of our team are over the hill, the manager is also, and it showed. Our best bet is buying a few good players, bringing in the best youngsters, get some excitement going while winning the SPL at least and hopefully using the lesser lights of the Europa League as a platform to create some positive vibes around the season and bring us to next season with some momentum and something to look forward to ie improving players and front foot football. The alternative doesn’t bare thinking about.

Confused
Why are rangers still complying with FSR
Can Ernie be excommunicated?
TIMHORTON
I can only assume they are using the same lawyers and accountants as the likes of Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, etc.
Maybe Newcastle and Villa should do the same.
Ernie,
”Is there any potential downside (to them) of either of those clubs being successful in Europe?

Could you expand on your point?

There is a potential downside for Celtic in repeated qualification for the CL in that it would open up
an bridgeable gulf for the huns. That could end The Old Firm business model.
I don’t like criticising individuals and rarely do but I think Martin takes the blame for this catastrophic performance and result. To go to Lask and employ the same tactics as the first game and expect the same result was optimistic in the extreme given the way the first game panned out. We got a great result but it could have been very different.
We should have gone there to stink the place out and protect our lead rather than play a very open game. Spfl teams come to celtic park and make life very difficult for us every season. Why can’t we do do this too?
We have taken some real hammerings in europe over the last few years. We need to learn.
Rangers got to a uefa Cup final under Smith by boring the arses off of everyone, home and away. Why do we have to be so cavalier?
Anyone remember MTK?
Thought we looked knackered early in the 2nd half, whereas LASK seemed to pop up mobhanded all over the park.
The touch, vision and skill to beat that was missing and so we had to chase and chase.
We couldn’t connect. There didn’t seem like a footballing togetherness. And we were outmuscled. Again. Dipping a toe into tackles, allowing forwards to turn and run, shouldered off the ball, losing headers, losing awareness of the best option on the break or in defence, lack of composure all contributed to a collective failure. No collective replaced with individualism that was found wanting.
We saw the worst of so many: Nygren;Trusty;McCowan;Hatate;Tounetki, and not much from others.
My view is the better prepared, organised, coached and athletic team won while the losers resorted to attempted moments of magic and defensive desperation.
We make a profit from individual player sales and you do wonder if this is our fate under the board strategy. Turnover of players, volume of sales disrupting the collective identity, a tension between profit and teamworking.
We were well beaten. The players looked a beaten team even at 3-1 on the night. We were even passing it about at the back with a few minutes of extra time left. Thats all we had left. Possession.
The ex St Mirren player , Freckleton came on as a sub. Ok, he didn’t start but LASK thought he would fit the team identity. What did LASK see in him and their other players that we cant or wont. ?
Can we not find a team identity that incorporates a relentless, incessant, suffocating athleticism and desire to win, then coach collective movement and response to recurring opportunities and threats. ? The available money advantage surely can then add skill to this. LASK’s fortunes turned round dramatically last season with their new coach.
We look pretty and vulnerable. Toffs , who were realizing their shortcomings as they were being exposed. This was a sad reality check.for the coaches and players. You are not that great despite your pay packets.
We need time to recover, but mostly the recruiters, coaches and players must uncover footballing toughness. Embrace and incorporate a willingness to fight ,beat your opponent and win. Or are you all just taking the piss and riding the great Celtic gravy train. ?
I was pleased to see Hearts qualify last night. At least they’ll now have 8 midweek ECL games – unlike last season – where failure to qualify and going out of the two cups took them a long way to almost winning the title.
I suppose we’ll need to support the huns tonight for the same reason?
If they lose tonight they will have 8 free midweeks and 8 Saturday games leaving us to play catch up on the Sunday.
In such a scenario that would make them favourites for the SPFL title IMO. An unpalatable thought!
I typically havent voted because most games I would see later, or only highlights (except European games). And didnt seem fair somehow to only vote for European games somehow…
But after the LASK debacle, I struggled to think of three players … Calmac was a 6 for the first 25 minutes, and a -10 for the balance of the game, so would have gotten a -5 from me …but didnt think we could give a negative rating.
after that performance, the players owe the fans something … maybe the players should be forced to pick their 3 best fans!
(Although with the way Celtic runs, I can already see how that voting would go … DD,Nicholson, and Rod Stewart would win no doubt).

I agree with your point that “We should have gone there to stink the place out and protect our lead rather than play a very open game.”
I note also that Timternet is hugely critical of MON after the game, with many saying that we should have thanked him for the double in May and waved him off.
Personally, I am totally pissed off about the result. I know MON and his team are culpable to some extent. But they cannot be held responsible for a stupid pass back. Or the midfield going missing and leaving gaps everywhere. Or Scalesy being classed as cover at LB and CH-and not being able to play both positions at the same time. Or our keeper being slow getting down to admittedly well placed daisy cutters.
What about his subs then? Well, that’s a good point. They were all rubbish. But we’ve known for years that our team are just about good enough, but our squad is miles short. Who else was he supposed to pick? I’ll grant you I’d have put Hassiem on before Tounekti, right enough.
Tuesday night was about a failure on the pitch, and from those sitting in the posh seats. It wasn’t down to our manager. He can only pish with the cock in his hands.
MIKEINTORONTO
“Calmac was a 6”
Well, there’s a first. You’ve told us for years he’s wasted in that position!
Bobby
I love MON, he’s my favourite Celtic manager. However, he must carry the blame for Tuesday.
I agree that the players are the most culpable, but at 4-0 up the instructions should have been , ” turn this into a a war of attrition for LASK – by whatever means necessary”. That they scored before halftime should have been the signal to bring on Scales, sacrifice a forward, and flood the midfield.
That all of us could see what to do , but a seasoned European pro like MON could not , is quite frankly a major concern on his ability.
Ernie,
I do not buy into the conspiracy theory that we do not wish to get too far ahead of Sevco or any future vehicle to serve that market. If I did, I would quit following Scottish football, or, at least, try to ween my self off Celtic.
I think there is no plan, no philosophy, no innovation, and thus no hope of improvement.
Despite all of the above, as you say, the ST money flows in, so the only thing that might cause change, is not a threat to the Board.
Over the last few years, this realisation has caused me to decrease my involvement with the club…..I mean both my financial and emotional involvement. In the past, I would have been devastated by the LASK result but, my expectations have been adjusted downwards.
It would be interesting to know how died in the wool supporters feel, i.e., supporters from Celtic families.
To me, Infantino summarises what has happened to football as profit, and only profit, now drives the game. It is probably better to watch games from teams further down the pyramid for more genuine sportsmanship.(to include women).
keep you posts coming. I always read them as they are the ying for the yang.

I didnt even see that one coming!😆
San Luis,
I agree with your critique of MON. We got lucky with him last year. He will probably have enough to be competitive in the league again but Europe will be a step too far, unless there is dramatic recruitment. I suspect talks have occurred about replacing him mid season, with his consent. Let’s hope the net gets spread widely. Kulbaur has illustrated that there are good coaches out there that we could afford.
Rebus
It must be roasting in Chechia as the UB have ditched their spider man balaklavas!
BTW pish as we were on Tuesday these two teams are garbage. It’s like watching a game in a public park!
We have now failed utterly against the following 6 mighty teams in the last 8 years:
AEK Athens, CFR Cluj, Ferencvaros, FC Midtjylland, Kairat Almaty, and LASK. We have become a laughing stock, with even Hearts laughing at us. One Celtic player featured against all 6. Our captain.
I’m not saying there’s a pattern here, but Callum it was that gestured to Nygren to pass the ball back, an unmitigated disaster setting off our total collapse. It was a grievous error. These two players need power and physicality around them for the team to benefit from their assets. It is totally absent, and there has to be consequences for the abysmal failures on our Board who just refuse to support the manager.
If there are not major additions in the next 7 days addressing the gaping holes we have middle to back, MON would be best advised to tell Despot to just shove it. Otherwise, both his credibility and legacy risk damage beyond repair.
The Huns are still spending money like water. And BEFORE they punt Raskin. Regardless of what one thinks of their quality, when they make a sub now, there is minimal reduction in quality. When we do, it is like falling off a cliff. And talking of subs, I have a bad feeling that Trusty, Hogh and KT will be doubtful for Falkirk.
I wonder if our set piece coach is instructing CCV and Trusty what to do when they face the 6’4” Kelsy and the 6’5” Fernandes at corners in a couple of weeks? Probably not. Too much like planning ahead.
I watch quite a few training videos from clubs like Bayern, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Barca, and I am always really impressed by their intensity, with players lathered in sweat as they exert maximum effort to total exhaustion. I see absolutely nothing of this at Lennoxtown, with players chatting, having a laugh, basically trotting between cones, with many cheating on their limited short sprint routines. Our fitness in Linz looked just lamentable.
I find myself sharing many of Rebus’s views. For the moment, I get passionately involved, and feel enraged and frustrated at the Board fuckwits. If it were anything else, I would just say “Fcuk them”, and detach myself entirely. But every one of us knows how tough that is to do. But the fact that I even contemplate it after 60 odd years means others may well feel as I do.
Freiburg 1 Motherwell 0 (4-1)

Watched 1st half of huns game, no more, both woeful.
At least the pitch looks decent.

Last season’s finalists Arsenal have been drawn against: Real Madrid (home), Bayern Munich (away), Borussia Dortmund (home), Real Betis (away), Lille (home), Napoli (away), Sabah (home), Slavia Prague (away).

It’s even worse than that – it’s 8 catastrophic defeats out of 10 by teams with a fraction of our resources.
A few months ago Nicholson met fans and when asked why Celtic are consistently unprepared for CLQ matches he replied:
“I don’t accept the premise of the question”
This is what we’re up against!
Liverpool will play: Atletico Madrid (home), Inter Milan (away), Porto (home), Club Brugge (away), Villarreal (home), Fenerbahce (away), Lens (home), LASK (away)
LASK play Liverpool, Real Madrid, Porto, Sporting, Fenerbache, AEK, Slovan Bratislava, Bodo/Glimt.
Freiburg 1 Motherwell 1 (4-2). Longelo. Looks a good player. A left back!
Huns looking comfortable. Would love them to get turfed out, or have the game at least going to extra time before their trip to Pittodrie on Sunday.
Jablonec look pitiful, so no great hope there.
Here’s the LASK home and away split. How many points do you think we would have got with this draw? Gulp!😱.
LASK have drawn: Liverpool (home), Real Madrid (away), Porto (home), Sporting CP (away), Fenerbahce (home), Bodo/Glimt (away), Slovan Bratislava (home), AEK Athens (away)
Jablonec 1-1.🤣

Yer a bad man, Calton🤣😅😂
Wee staunch Barron refusing lucrative offers from elsewhere to stay with Huns.
Good news for SPL opponents as he is mince.
McCowan for us and the other Dundee mid who joined the Huns to be loaned elsewhere are terrible.
Maybe they don’t have the creative ability to flourish at teams who go forward?
With a requirement to have Scottish quota this would be a worry but mitigated by the fact we’re European fodder anyway.
Re LASK CL draw
Realistically, anywhere between 6 at worst and 10 points at best. Not enought to qualify beyond the league phase.
The Serbian Nedeljkovic looks Huns best player, despite the fact he is a right back replacing a center forward, Naderi.
Looking at Lask’s European draw it’s probably a blessing we did not get through.
With our defensive frailty we would have been looking at cricket scores against us from most of those teams.
Said the other evening Lask were defensively poor and expect them to take a few poundings.
Czech wellies over bar when it was easier to score.
3 mins until the penalty
Uefa is preparing criminal legal proceedings against Fifa president Gianni Infantino over the now scrapped plan to sell off stakes in the World Cup and its other competitions to private investors.
Huns with weird line up for trying to win. Looks like 5-3-2 to me.
Jablonec look really poor.
Extra time.
Shankland is a lazy useless player. Even as a free transfer he was overpriced. Can’t believe we had Celtic fans suggesting we sign him last season.

Hi Sol:
Agreed. I was appalled when Clarke fielded him for 89 minutes against Brazil. He was a veritable statue. At a lower level of football, he had a reasonable first touch and an eye for goal from close range with his head and both feet. He did score a few against us, and rarely missed a penalty wherever he played. But where movement and athleticism is required, he is more akin to a telegraph pole than a football player.

INIQUITOUS IV 😊
We could face Danny Rohl again. Salzburg up 1-0 on aggregate vs Mjallby.
Very low scoring in Europa and Conference so far.
I’m with Sol Kitts on Shankland. Told a friend of mine, worked beside him for nearly 20 years that he was worse than mince. He hardly moves about never mind run and that type of CF is not for the modern game.
Freiburg 2 Motherwell 1 (5-2).
Sol Kitts & Cosy Corner Bhoy,
Shankland was bought to take over from Tavpen.
Motherwell down to 10.
I would need to see the replay again, but I think the zombies got away with a handball in the box there.
Really is a poor game between two poor teams. At least the Celtic game had a bit of a ‘cant turn away from a car crash’ spectacle to it to draw you in.
