Curb Your Enthusiasm

When I was down the pub the other day to get my kicking off my wee hun mate after the LASK disaster, he surprised me by for once not jumping down my throat. This, remember, is the guy who has twice in three seasons celebrated winning the title in March, and famously assumed it was all over in September 2021 during Ange’s first season.

Concerned that he might be unwell, I enquired why he was passing up an open goal. To my astonishment, he pointed out that I never slag him off when his team have a bad result, and that they still have a difficult tie on Thursday night. Wow, it’s only taken him twenty years, but I’ve finally talked some sense in to him!

I watched the McInnes interview last night, and not once did he say he was disappointed! Anyone get the feeling that the word is now banished from the Ibrox vocabulary, much as they finally ditched dignity? What he did say though surprised me, that the preparations for the game by the staff had been exhaustive and well executed. They had done their jobs. It was the players who had failed the club.

I mention this only because on Tuesday night, MON took full responsibility for the shambles we had just witnessed. No throwing the players under the bus in public from him, even if privately he may have said otherwise. While I thought that his substitutions were weak, it has to be said that he didn’t have much of a hand to play. I’d worried beforehand about the prospect of losing one of our centre backs as well as Tierney, and this came to pass. Scales can play either LB or CB, but he can’t do both at once, so Dane Murray was called upon. Ralston too, as Donovan also succumbed.

Three substitutes as a result of injuries to our back line kinda curtail a manager’s options. Should he have brought on Hassan instead of Tounekti? Most definitely. But he didn’t have much of a gene pool available in midfield when we needed it. And the midfield was the glaring problem all night, as it has been all season so far.

It was jarring then to watch the interview from John McGinn yesterday relating why his move to Celtic in 2018 hadn’t taken place. It wasn’t something we didn’t already know, but it was like a boot in the bollocks to hear it all again, and straight from the horse’s mouth. Would he have made a difference on Tuesday? Probably not-we’d have sold him for a fortune long ago. I doubt there’s a chance in hell that Lawwell would have passed up the first decent offer. But a player just like him is what we have needed for a long time.

And don’t start me either about our need of a big hard bastert to anchor our midfield and shield the defence. That gap in our resources has been glaring for years now, probably since Neil Lennon retired. We must be the only team in world football that tries to play like the Harlem Globetrotters every time, simply because we do not have the players capable of defending. Even the most limited of sides fancy their chances against us, and rightly so when the likes of Dundee United can get fifteen shots at goal and hit the woodwork an astonishing five times.

The thing is, Tuesday night was not the responsibility of our manager. Take away the questionable inclusion of Tounekti and he played pretty much the only hand he could. The fault lies with the players who cannot hold position and cannot tackle, yes, but the main issue is that the board have stripped our squad systematically over the years while being too tight to cough up the cash for a proper talent like McGinn, and countless others over the years. Remember when BR wanted a CB and got Kompper? It meant that we couldn’t accept the £10m from Fulham for Boyata. And we lost him on a free the following summer.

We suffered due to a pissing competition between Lawwell and Petrie at Hibs. We suffered due to Lawwell undermining BR by refusing him the players he requested and making sure that the biggest cheque he signed was for his own bonus. We’ve suffered since because the board didn’t like the cut of Dominic McKay’s jib-far too ambitious and forward thinking for their hidebound tastes, and too closely aligned with the ideals of his manager.

We are still suffering because it is a point of honour at Celtic to lowball every selling club, even if it always means either losing out or paying over the odds. We are suffering because the board simply will not back the football ambitions of successive managers. And Martin shouldn’t act surprised. After all, it all started during his original tenure over twenty years ago.

Unless and until the club hire someone with the responsibility to track down the players that the manager wants and needs, we are stuck with the same old shit on a constant rotation. We can almost certainly say goodbye to the Champions League for a very long time, and unless we start getting serious about building a proper squad fit for purpose, we can probably wave goodbye pretty soon to the Europa League too. As it is, we can probably wave goodbye to all those optimistic transfer rumours over the last fortnight. Especially if they were watching on Tuesday.

The draw is later today. I’ll try to work up some enthusiasm for it.

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!
We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

August 28, 2026 9:03 am

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details will be available on the dedicated page nearer to the beginning of the event on 17th September.

There some decent teams in that draw, interesting if we draw Beer-sheva.

Apparently they are explicitly apolitical and intentionally reject any right-wing or left-wing alignment.

With the decade long strategy of ” Just ahead of Rangers”. You are indeed correct.

Even when we lose, we win.

Zombies piling on the debt, Hearts providing the competitive challenge and now playing in Europe every midweek and Celtic making even more profit this summer.

I’ve no doubt DD had the grin of a Cheshire cat last night as he smoked a cigar and rolled the end of his moustache.

Curb Your Enthusiasm . I am currently watching this show from start to finish for the third time as there’s heehaw decent on any of the millions of channels available these days. Along with Still Game, The Office, Extras and the like, it’s one of my go to shows that I never get sick of.
I started watching this show about 12 years ago. As the years have passed, I can’t help seeing how much I am growing into a Larry David. The resemblance has become uncanny. My intolerance and impatience have reached an all time low as I age. Watching Celtic these days has certainly contributed to my Larry Davidesque attitude. As much as I love the show, I don’t want my family to suffer my crabbit bastarditos.
Celtic, please do the right thing for once 🙏

For years on this site and elsewhere we have been saying exactly the same things about deficiencies in the team.

We know the board are misers but they have spent some money and have brought in loads of players in recent years.

Can anyone explain why nothing has been done to sort the problems we all complain about.
Do the managers and coaches not see it or are we all wrong.

I too am a Larry David aficionado. Curb is probably the best written comedy show ever , the fact that it’s based entirely on his own personal opinions makes it even funnier. It also created the best character ever in Leon.

I first caught it in 2002 when in America and in the hotel room one wet evening I stumbled across it…I’m certain it was ‘The Baptism” episode and I haven’t stopped laughing since.

frodsham boy
I have harped on about this till I am bluer in the face.
We absolutely need a proper defensive mid especially for Europe someone who can tackle position and build play, we might even need two in some games.

But for some reason, firstly we used Broony and now Calmac in that position and they have blocked off exactly the kind of player we need despite not being good enough in that position at European level.

We have never replaced wanyama.

Before this morning’s draw, let’s have a guess at the cost of our Europa League 4 game Europa League package. I’ll guess £168

August 28, 2026 10:48 am

Jobo – they know the fans are pissed off and they’d be as well trying to sell cheap and fill the stadium as opposed to ripping fans off and risking a Middlesbrough/Milan type crowd through NAPM.

But, I suppose it depends on how glamorous a tie we get. If we get a mixture of French, Austrian, Hungarian and Turkish teams it’ll be £120.

If it’s Italian, German,Spanish and English it’s £160.

And if it’s a mixture of both it’ll be around £140.

Disagree.
Bobby that was all down to our manager and coaching staff.
The end to last season was fantastic and I will never forget it .
But the months leading up to it our performances were dreadful. Everyone said it was all about the results and I accept that.
But to be played off the park by teams like Motherwell, Dundee, Falkirk and even the huns , tells you that there is something far wrong with our setup and tactics.
You can only survive so long playing like that and getting results.
Everyone knows our midfield has been weak as pish and nothing has been done to rectify it.
In fact MON was quite happy to let Engels go and not replace him.
What the fk did they do during preseason, as we look absolutely clueless .
The warning signs were there in the Dundee utd and Lask home game, but we still went with same selection and formation.

Rant over

Frodshambhoy,

There is no answer to why we haven’t addressed the holes in our team (Squad), not any answers that would satisfy.

Think of all the great teams, both domestic and international, and what do they all have in common, they all have at least one enforcer in their teams, at least one guy who’s sole job is winning the ball back for his team.

Deschamps
Gattuso
Keane
Viera

I could go on all day about these types and the role they play in making the difference between good teams and great ones.

Is Zidane free to be the man he became without a Deschamps beside him? Pirlo without Gattuso? Is Scholes free to be the player he became without Keane beside him?

And I know these lads were all great players in their own right, I’m talking more about the first priority in their role.

The last player we have that comes close is Broony, and by no stretch did he start out as a no6.

It is an absolute scandal I, along with thousands of others, have been stating the No1 thing our team was lacking, and yet we have done absolutely nothing to address the problem.

Honestly, not only am I angry about it, I am absolutely bewildered at our lack of coaching smarts!

We are decades behind the truly big clubs .. it’s so depressing. Actually I am completely falling out of love with football.

I know Martin deserves his share of the blame ..but ..

When Martin managed us first time round he had a team full of men, not boys! That Celtic team didn’t just have experience of lots of games behind them, there were guys who’d won the biggest prizes in the game.

Since then we’ve just had a series of teams full of boys. Fuck, we are actually now signing players who haven’t actually played a senior match yet!!

Celtic! Celtic buying kids who haven’t played a single game for their club are seen as good enough to sign for us now.

I’m not making excuses for Martin or the coaching staff, I’m just pointing out how different our club is to the one Martin managed to take to a European final.

I fully expect to never see that happen again in whatever is left of my life.

BAD

We’ve only one un20 in our squad, the ever improving Colby Donovan.
We have two between 20-22 -Baur and Osmond. Two excellent prospects.
The majority of our squad is 23-26 (11)
And 27-30 (9).
We have three over 30s – two of whom are central midfielders of 33yrs – Cal and Ox then a 35 yr old Jamesie.

In my view the majority of our squad are men in their footballing prime – now wether that prime is good enough is another question, but experience is there aplenty.

Bored by the board
August 28, 2026 12:06 pm

How to play against Celtic book one, page one.
1 They always play the stupid 4-3-3 so get at least 4 players into the midfield, get runners beyond the ball and commit the back four. Gaps are then created for the forwards. Mix it up with long balls up to battling forwards. Scales is the only defender up for an Ariel joust and he hardly gets on unless CCV is injured. Chances are created aplenty for shots around the edge of the box. Fair enough, if your luck is out you might hit the woodwork 5 times but that won’t always happen. Look at LASKs formation. Do you think they knew what was coming? Everything on Tuesday on the Manager and coaches. There is almost nothing you can say about the timing of the Subs or the order they came on. I was crying out on here for Hassan to come on at half time to hold the ball and frustrate them. The subs like the useless formation could not have been worse. Absolutely no thought goes in to anything unless you are the opposition of course.

San Luis,

Outside of the odd one of two, the vast majority of our guys are youngsters in footballing terms. I’m aware of the make-up of the squad but, as it stands we buy very, very few players with experience of winning things, or competing at the higher end of football.

Don’t ask me to explain the Oxlade -Chamberlain signing please, I haven’t a clue why we done that

I can’t remember who it was, but there was someone made a list of players we had brought in that had played less than 30 first team games in their life.

Then there’s guys like Osmand, Arthur, etc, who’d never played a single first team game yet. If you haven’t got experience of playing first team football, you’re hardly likely to have the know-how to help your team in a situation like the other night.

We can’t keep buy lads ages 18-22 and expect them to have enough smarts to take control of a game at the highest level.

And I know that doesn’t fully explain what happened the other night, but our signing policy, where most of your signings are you looking for young gems to sell on, can’t always be lads with very little experience of pressure football.

Playing in a few dozens games in the Irish league, or Fulham reserves, isn’t preparation for playing for Celtic in the biggest trophy in world football

Of course the manager has to take some of the blame, he picks the team, picks the system and the tactics. Gave away a four goal lead with one hour to play. After Nygren’s howler which he did also playing for Sweden and was rightly heavily criticised, he should have been hooked. The shape then would be changed to allow a more defensive formation, both he and his coaches must take their share of the blame, that result was shocking and shameful falling to the mighty LASK.
Pure and utter garbage.

Linking them with us is also garbage the press are a bunch of lying fucks. A club that died in 2012 after the City of London Police raided their filing cabinets and discovered the secret side letters, I often wondered who was the whistle-blower for that. What followed after that shamed Scotland and Scottish society and once again opened the floodgates of sectarianism. To be linked with scum like that rubs salt in the open sores of Scottish football. Paid the Face painter Yet? Returned the 6000 debenture seats back to the supporters that bought a life time seat? Tuped any more players yet?
The City of London Police upholding the law and Wolfe and the apology for wrongful prosecution shaming the law in Scotland. Linked with crooks, shameful………
