Curb Your Enthusiasm
When I was down the pub the other day to get my kicking off my wee hun mate after the LASK disaster, he surprised me by for once not jumping down my throat. This, remember, is the guy who has twice in three seasons celebrated winning the title in March, and famously assumed it was all over in September 2021 during Ange’s first season.
Concerned that he might be unwell, I enquired why he was passing up an open goal. To my astonishment, he pointed out that I never slag him off when his team have a bad result, and that they still have a difficult tie on Thursday night. Wow, it’s only taken him twenty years, but I’ve finally talked some sense in to him!
I watched the McInnes interview last night, and not once did he say he was disappointed! Anyone get the feeling that the word is now banished from the Ibrox vocabulary, much as they finally ditched dignity? What he did say though surprised me, that the preparations for the game by the staff had been exhaustive and well executed. They had done their jobs. It was the players who had failed the club.
I mention this only because on Tuesday night, MON took full responsibility for the shambles we had just witnessed. No throwing the players under the bus in public from him, even if privately he may have said otherwise. While I thought that his substitutions were weak, it has to be said that he didn’t have much of a hand to play. I’d worried beforehand about the prospect of losing one of our centre backs as well as Tierney, and this came to pass. Scales can play either LB or CB, but he can’t do both at once, so Dane Murray was called upon. Ralston too, as Donovan also succumbed.
Three substitutes as a result of injuries to our back line kinda curtail a manager’s options. Should he have brought on Hassan instead of Tounekti? Most definitely. But he didn’t have much of a gene pool available in midfield when we needed it. And the midfield was the glaring problem all night, as it has been all season so far.
It was jarring then to watch the interview from John McGinn yesterday relating why his move to Celtic in 2018 hadn’t taken place. It wasn’t something we didn’t already know, but it was like a boot in the bollocks to hear it all again, and straight from the horse’s mouth. Would he have made a difference on Tuesday? Probably not-we’d have sold him for a fortune long ago. I doubt there’s a chance in hell that Lawwell would have passed up the first decent offer. But a player just like him is what we have needed for a long time.
And don’t start me either about our need of a big hard bastert to anchor our midfield and shield the defence. That gap in our resources has been glaring for years now, probably since Neil Lennon retired. We must be the only team in world football that tries to play like the Harlem Globetrotters every time, simply because we do not have the players capable of defending. Even the most limited of sides fancy their chances against us, and rightly so when the likes of Dundee United can get fifteen shots at goal and hit the woodwork an astonishing five times.
The thing is, Tuesday night was not the responsibility of our manager. Take away the questionable inclusion of Tounekti and he played pretty much the only hand he could. The fault lies with the players who cannot hold position and cannot tackle, yes, but the main issue is that the board have stripped our squad systematically over the years while being too tight to cough up the cash for a proper talent like McGinn, and countless others over the years. Remember when BR wanted a CB and got Kompper? It meant that we couldn’t accept the £10m from Fulham for Boyata. And we lost him on a free the following summer.
We suffered due to a pissing competition between Lawwell and Petrie at Hibs. We suffered due to Lawwell undermining BR by refusing him the players he requested and making sure that the biggest cheque he signed was for his own bonus. We’ve suffered since because the board didn’t like the cut of Dominic McKay’s jib-far too ambitious and forward thinking for their hidebound tastes, and too closely aligned with the ideals of his manager.
We are still suffering because it is a point of honour at Celtic to lowball every selling club, even if it always means either losing out or paying over the odds. We are suffering because the board simply will not back the football ambitions of successive managers. And Martin shouldn’t act surprised. After all, it all started during his original tenure over twenty years ago.
Unless and until the club hire someone with the responsibility to track down the players that the manager wants and needs, we are stuck with the same old shit on a constant rotation. We can almost certainly say goodbye to the Champions League for a very long time, and unless we start getting serious about building a proper squad fit for purpose, we can probably wave goodbye pretty soon to the Europa League too. As it is, we can probably wave goodbye to all those optimistic transfer rumours over the last fortnight. Especially if they were watching on Tuesday.
The draw is later today. I’ll try to work up some enthusiasm for it.

Celtic II 1 Auchinleck Talbot 1
Prestonpans bhoys @8.37pm
They are truly Deranged.
The 300 tickets, take them, don’t sell them.
Leave 300 empty seats.
Deduct the cost of the Tickets from the money they owe for the game in March.

Bayern now 4-1 up on Stuttgart. Olise with his second goal.
Nope. Offside. Back to 3-1.
Superb team

I read an article this morning about tonight’s game. Seems Haaland has scored every time he plays Palace.
Celtic should just cancel training sessions with players allowed to hire personnel trainers.
Lazy jogging around plastic cones has no benefit.
We are coachless.
Sinisalo should have been working on getting down quicker to low shots.
A core group should be trained with intensity!
And the wasters should be organized into five a sides to get them used to actually touching the football
Huns giving us 300 for the league cup game say…
“Rangers will not be deterred from taking decisions it believes are necessary to protect our club, our stadium and our fans.”
Where do you start with that shite?
Protected by the SFA for multiple offences at Ibrox, including a serious assault on a Celtic physio in the main stand, game delayed for a bottle hitting Joe Harts crossbar, etc etc
Bayern 4-1. Hit the line, cut it back to player on 6 yard line middle if goal, simplest move in football for a certain goal.
Thus team is a machine.

Hi Fan
The striking thing is that you never see any intensity, ever. You don’t see players sweating, semi exhausted, with hands on knees.
You watch a Bayern session and see Kane absolutely soaking with sweat, then doing extra practice with just himself and a goalkeeper, practicing, shooting, free kicks, penalties until he approaches perfection.
5-1 Bayern. Diaz.

City 3-1 up at Palace with 2 Cherki goals.
Celtic board will be pleased the SFA have taken the conversation away from poor coaching, poor players and their usual frugality once again causing us to produce our annual European collapse.
Soul destroying to support a team constantly sabotaged from within.
Celtic II 2 Auchinleck 2. Turley with both.
Iniquitous IV
Turley will get no benefit from club for his promise.
Will probably be loaned out in hope We get
a small fee for him at some stage.
During his mealy mouthed presser, MON mentioned that he didn’t want to go down to 10th on the lists of targets. We are apparently negotiating for a 19 year old midfielder with 6 hours of first team experience. Wonder how far down the list he is? Seems Gineitis, Mahmic, Sigur and everybody else have gone bye bye.
This after the Board waited until June re-appoint a temporary manager, haggled for a month and lowballed his assistants, had Lucan and Mackay swan off for 2 separate 2 week holidays, lost more than a month before signing a player, punted Engels and Bernardo without replacements, lost Saracchi, and left our midfield and defense absolutely bereft before a £40M tie that supporters wanted us to be prepared for ever since the Kairat Almaty disaster.
What a chronicle of utter incompetence! They have absolutely no concept of how to run a professional football team. I am still thoroughly hacked off with the feckers. I really hope the fans give it to them tight tomorrow.
PSG with 2 goals after 90th minute to rescue 2-2 tie at Lille.
(Marseille are 4 places above PSG) They have only played one game right enough, to PSG’s two.
This week, after possibly the worst European result in Celtic’s long History, the Huns have ridden to the rescue to alleviate any real pressure from our incompetent club. Completely shifting the narrative.
First, they blow up on the field
Second, along with their masonic brethern put equal blame on a problem caused at their ground in an SFA event onto Celtic.
Third, in a response to second, they ban our fans from their death trap of a stadium.
Honestly, our board are the jammies b*stards alive.
Nice to see the board quite happy to use MON as a human shield. Got a bit messy at the presser when the STV bloke went off piste with real questions.
San Luis
Maybe they are not jammy
Perhaps a continuation of their joint Old Firm project?
Both sets of fans up in arms about European humiliation this week so they get SFA to publish nonsensical report knowing would change fans focus and ire!
Good evening, friends.
Inspired by the title of today’s lead articles, and the early posts from Bluegrass Celt and San Luis, I tracked down the series.
I realise I’m probably last to the party but I’ve just watched Season 1 Episode 1 of “_Curb Your Enthusiasm_”. And very good it was too! Something in the region of 119 more half hour episodes to go!
What a useful wee community this is!!
Reflects the petted headed, open mouth panting dog response from the permanently offended.
Celtic support is like a wagging dog looking for love n attention and willing to perform for the privilege.
My take on the MON presser is that he is obviously “down” from the LASK result and is pissed off at the lack of recruitment. He was also asked questions that should be answered by Board members…..and in realty somebody from the Board should have been at that presser. The incompetence of the executive staff club is once again totally exposed. I think Martin should give them a months notice and leave gracefully. If they can’t find a replacement (please not Maloney), let Lennon do it for the rest of the season. He’ll win us the league at least…….please…… not too much abuse!
Anyone who has not experienced Larry David’s magnum opus from 20 odd years ago must live in a bubble.
Jobo,
Sit back and enjoy. You’re in for a treat 👍
MoN is complicit in the shit show.
Should have been in a position to dictate terms.
obviously too weak to do so.
“The owner” reference tells you all you need to know.
Dolly Parton day!
A day that will live in infamy!
Jobo,
Meant to say, it gets even better when Leon joins the show but you’ll need to wait till season 6
Kasper Hogh presser very positive
Awaiting Nabbla incoming. 😀
I know a lot on here weren’t impressed by Engels, but had he been in the team, i dont think they would have shipped 4 second half goals. He was a ball ‘round mid, while Baur seems more of an attacking mid. Partly this may be simply because of their size. but i dont think they would have ripped through the middle as easily had he been playing.
The way Celtic play is almost 4-1 1/2 – 4 1/2, with Calmac the only one playing true mid, while Baur (half mid, half attacker) and especially Nygren really more auxilliary attackers.
that system is never going to work… i dont care if Rodri or Kante is the 1 in the middle… it puts too much responsibility on one player … but even more so when the 1 doesnt have the qualities to be a 6 in that he cant defend, and isnt a QB type deep lying midfielder.
this has been the biggest weakness of Celtic for the better part of a decade …
after finally being linked with a few defensive mids, in light of losing the CL money, that talk seems to have died.
thats a shame, as the same will happen in the EL if this issue isnt addressed
madness to continue on the same course of action, and to expect different results …
Funny,Sevco have about a dozen mids, but they are almost all defensive mids, with little attacking ability, so forwards are isolated.
celtic, on the other hand, only buy attacking mids, and dont have anyone who can bring the ball out and switch defence to attack, but again attack is separated from defence.
the two teams approach midfields from exactly opposite perspectives, but end up with basically the same problem.
Theres something I think is being lost on the wider support social media especially.
While Mahmic and Sigur might be moving for fee’s within our grasp, its the wages that really need taken into consideration.
For instance Genetis vs Van Der Berg.
The former commands around 25-30, the latter would be happy on the 8-12k squad wage and theres the difference.
Total outlay Genetis 9mEuro rising to 10 and 5 in wages.
Van Der Berg, probably 4m and 2.5 in wages.
Thats the CL versus Europa League money and it just shows how much difference the competition makes.
So while yes we could afford the initial fee we don’t want to commit to the overall package or more importantly packages, the players we had lined up before the collapse of the century. Sucks, but Lenny himself admitted theres two lists, one for each comp.
Now in fairness at least there was two lists not a blank page. And the kid should be good, he is rated. Ive nothing against sticking a 19 year old in the team and growing him ala Petrov, but he himself needs to show something. We mishandled the Portugese Under21 Captain, we better learn our lesson and not ruin the Dutch Under21 Captain.
Over to you Martin.
Build him up and launch him Martin.
Been quality so far, keep ‘er going.
Hail Hail
Mahe,
I heard that Stevie Wonder and Andrea Bocelli were in the crowd on Tuesday night and even they were talking about our glaring deficiencies.
Sounds like we’re going out again, signing sticking plasters when we should be addressing this issue that’s been haunting us since Wanyama departed.
Martin looked beat as his press conference, starting with the usual lighthearted banter about the list in his pocket but only read Benfica and Marseille and never bothered to read the rest. I think he read the room at that point and decided against continuing the quips and just bumbled his way through the rest . His fingers touching ever part of his neck and face made for an uncomfortable watch. How can we expect him to fire up 19 year old projects when his back room staff seem incapable of getting players to last 90 minutes?
As for high wages, Lask’s biggest spend was £1.8m. One of their signings came from St Mirren. Everyone of them looked fitter and tactically superior to us on Tuesday, and they were nothing special.
Bluegrass Celt,
I don’t disagree, things could be and should be much better. I do maintain buying quality players makes things easier all around and I hope that continues.
Hail Hail
We need experienced, skill full bit of muscle with immediate effect but, unless I’m proved wrong in the coming days, we don’t appear to be addressing this obvious flaw……again. Sounds like we are working our way down to the tenth place option on the list that Martin alluded to.
I’m yet to be convinced Duran and Hogh are the upgrade in quality you suggest. Baur looks a Hatate clone to me.
If the forward line is the upgrade you say then we need an enforcer at the back to protect the mid and defence or we’ll rarely see those guys getting the service they need to prove they’re the quality that we hope they are.
Christ, is that the time?
Nite nite

MAHE
We’ve gone from a guy with 75 games in Serie A to a neophyte with 5 games in the Eredivisie to plug a critical gap, the biggest hole in the sieve we call our central midfield. In other words, mate, it’s a desperate last minute cheap punt, with the aim of future profit rather than Europa League progress.
Mahmic goes to the mighty Corum, who are not in Europe, and its looks like Sigur is going to Conference League Gent. I have little doubt that the incompetent Mute is looking at more loans of the Mvuka, Adamu, Cvancar standard.

INIQUITOUS IV😊
Was watching an interview with Gary Neville and Kyle Walker, talking about Pep. KW says Pep’s direction was ‘set the ball; dont turn on the ball’ and explained that meant Pep didnt want his midfielders to receive the ball facing their own goal, and then turn with the ball, because it slowed down the play too much. He said DeBruyne would let the ball run past him and turn as the ball passed him, which didnt slow play down as much’.
Pep would have had a fit at Celtic then … I wouls day the majority of Celtic’s passes are to players facing backwards!

Good morning, friends and a Big Happy Matchday to all who post or lurk on this fine site.
And it’s a Super Saturday for this old man with Celtic v Falkirk at 3.00pm then a short dash home for BBC Alba’s League One game, Ross County v East Kilbride at 5.30pm. 8 sincerely hope that the 3 best players that I witness today are from the first game!
