Duran at the double

Given the epic midweek collapse I really didn’t want to see the same team huff and puff their way through another 90 mintues so in a way I was happy changes had been forced upon us. Callum and Kasper were forced out through sickness/injury which saw Duran move central with Hassan getting his first start for his new employers, and the OX stepped in alongside Mika Baur in the middle of the park.

We knew what we were going to get from Falkirk, full energy and hunting in packs, and the Bairns started the game brightly but events quickly took a twist when with only five minutes on the clock Scott Bain had an absolute brainfart and slapped the ball to the feet of Camilo who gladly passed the ball into the empty net.

I wanted this dream start to be the catalyst for a high scoring romp, and it wasn’t just the goal giving me encouragement. John McGlynn had made what looked like a fatal tactical flaw,,,his fullbacks were standing off our wingers instead of coming out to the flank to meet them. This meant Yang and Hassan being constantly open to receive the pass and take on their direct opponent. I thought it was a crazy tactic and it later lead to our second goal when the inspace Yang fed the overlapping Tierney to lay off Camilo for his second of the day.

Two goals up at home should signal heavy pressure for the visitors as the relaxed starters and fresh subs take the game to them, instead our sieve gave up its usual prize. The leftback was non existent, the Keeper might have done better, and it wasnt the centrebacks but rather the right back who was forced all the way across to help, but ended up deflecting the ball into his own net.

Thats how the game finished, we take the win and move on but the Juggernaut feeling that was almost touchable just a few weeks has completely evaporated. This wasnt a good performance, it was a just enough display which is concerning because we need to find our rhythm sooner rather than later. In saying that we do have some positives to take home.

Duran once again proved we have signed a proper striker and to be honest I wouldn’t drop him for Hogh at the minute. Kasper would not have scored that second goal, it took a real burst of pace to get away from the last defender that the Dane just does not have.
The Ox was handy in Callums role but I personally thought Baur was the best midfielder on the park. His game intelligence shines through everytime I watch him,,always well positioned to quickly be at the heart of things, creating space to receive, not wasteful with his passing,,,he’s just a good footballer who has seamlessly slotted into life as a Celtic player. Hassan reminded me of Jota, very agile and a danger to defenders with the pace and confidence to go past a defender. He was effective in that respect but now needs to turn those attributes into assists and hopefully goals.

I believe Yang is improving under our current setup but if anything our defense is getting worse. We give up too many chances, at least a goal a game, and I can’t see Dane Murray fixing that when one of Trusty/CCV gets injured. It gets worse, KT got injured and Scales at leftback doesn’t cut the mustard so the defense will continue to be a bombscare for at least a while unless our new incoming leftback is fit enough and good enough to slot straight in.

There was no Reo in the squad with a supposed exit scuppering his involvement so this Van Der Berg deal will happen and the fee for the Japanese player should cover his much younger replacement.
Callum Osmond left the stadium in a moon boot and I’m starting to wonder if he’s an injury prone player that cannot be counted on. Colby might have left in a moonboot, instead his actual football took the brunt of a bad tackle and literally snapped in half which is a first for me.

We could really do with some positivity around the club and the obvious way to do that would entail a strong end to the transfer window.
For Martins sake this better happen as he has taken a proverbial kicking over the LASK outcome and as he admitted we are a million miles away from where he wants us to be.
If only there was a way to change that.

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!

We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, and will be on their own dedicated page nearer the time. I look forward to your participation.

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details will be available on the dedicated page nearer to the beginning of the event on 18th September.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2025-26*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #6 CELTIC 2 FALKIRK 1 (DURAN(2)*

Good evening, friends.

As the teams emerged from the tunnel, I’d guess there wasn’t a single fan in Celtic Park who remained disappointed from our midweek game and our failure to close out that tie. But did we really need Celtic fans to hold up banners with the names of every team that has beaten us at the qualifying stage over the last dozen years? Hardly the type of things to encourage our players? I really failed to see the point of that – it certainly didn’t add anything to what we already knew. Rant over!

The team lines showed 2 changes from midweek with the injured Calmac and Høgh replaced by Oxlade-Chamberlain and Hassan. And both of those replacements were to give performances that may well see them staying in the team. It also meant Duran playing through the middle and it took him less than 5 minutes to get off the mark, finishing off a good early ball over the top from Carter-Vickers with the aid of some edge of the box fumbling from Scott Bain. Wrongly flagged for offside but correctly overturned by the VAR.

Both Hassan and Yang were doing what wingers are meant to do – beating their men and getting balls into the box and there was certainly lots to be pleased about in that opening half hour. And on the 30 minute mark Celtic scored again. After some pressure in our own box, Sinislao released Tierney on the left side. An exchange of passes with Yang saw Tierney then deliver a ball into that infamous corridor of uncertainty where Duran was anything but, nicking the ball home like a true number nine. We fed him on a Sat’day and our hearts stood still, Duran ran ran, ran, Duran, ran ran.
5 minutes later, Baur from the inside left position had a chance to make it 3 but Bain saved well with his left foot. 2 clear at half time but with Tuesday still fresh in our minds I didn’t hear anyone suggesting the points were safe.

And talk about a game of two halves! During the 2nd 45 we looked lethargic, slower to react, tame in the tackle and also passed up 3 or 4 decent chances, mostly over the bar. Fortunately Falkirk, despite more possession, were creating very little. Until our parting of the waves in the 72nd minute allowed Falkirk’s Murrell to advance from the halfway line into our box. His effort was well saved by Sinisalo, but the ball bounced off Donovan and into the net.

Celtic didn’t really look like conceding again but it was still a rather nervy last 20 minutes before the victory was secured.

Celtic have now played 6 games, winning 5 and losing 1. We have scored 16 and conceded 7. We sit 2 points clear at the top of the table.

Another fine turnout of voters, so thank you for that. For this latest game, 103 provided their nominations, meaning we have hit the 100+ target in 5 of the opening 6 games – £15 (already) to Glasgow City Mission.

The total votes cast for each player (with my own nominations asterisked) are as follows –

Sinisalo: 1
Donovan: 9
Carter Vickers: 5
Scales*: 8
Tierney: 14
Oxlade-Chamberlain: 80
Baur: 45
Nygren: 0
Hassan: 39
Duran: 102
Yang: 4
Forrest: 2
Trusty: 0
Osmand: 0
McCowan: 0
Tounekti: 0
Unused subs: Doohan, Kennedy, Kenny, Murray

And so, the POINTS earned by each player for the game against Falkirk are as follows –
25 – Duran
22 – Oxlade-Chamberlain
19 – Baur
16 – Hassan
14 – Tierney
12 – Donovan
11 – Scales
10 – Carter-Vickers
9 – Yang
8 – Forrest
7 – Sinisalo
4 each – Nygren, McCowan, Osmand, Tounekti, Trusty
1 each – Doohan, Kennedy, Kenny, Murray

And the CUMULATIVE POINTS after 6 games played are as follows –
104 – Duran
86 – Nygren
83 – Tierney
82 – McGregor
79 – Donovan
70 – Carter-Vickers
61 – Yang
60 – Høgh
59 – Sinisalo
52 – Baur
50 – Trusty
41 – Tounekti
36 – Oxlade-Chamberlain
34 – Scales
30 – Engels
26 – Hassan
25 – McCowan
24 – Forrest
18 – Hatate
17 – Johnston
15 – Murray
13 – Osmand
8 – Ralston
6 – Doohan
3 – Kenny
2 – Balikwisha
1 – Kennedy

For our next test we have another home league game against Aberdeen. Kick off on Wednesday evening is 7.45pm.

p.s. embdy know substitute Kennedy’s first name and/or position: no info on Celtic FC site…..

So we buy, for decent money, the Dutch Under 21 Captain who’s fans are upset he’s leaving, who is a big boy with a big future in the game ahead, who plays in a position we need more strength in, and people are upset.
Whatever happened to “Ill give you a proper judgement after hes played 20 games”? and “screw the fee its about the player himself”?

Funny I seem to recall Stan Petrov being the Under21 Captain, being a 19 year old signed for decent money, and just like Van the Man getting questioned.

And before anyone says he’s not suitable to be Engels replacement first of all you cannot state that with certainty and secondly why would the quality stop? He will buy cheaper quality yes, but still quality. Plus apparently theres another midfielder coming, thus he isn’t the direct replacement but midfield depth and tbh if you said to me Chaiwa or this kid for 4m to add depth I would have opted for Van the Man.

I can see it now, within 2 or 3 games the general support will be typing weve got a player here and this initial skepticism will be brushed under the carpet.
A 19 year old with balls big enough to back himself to leave home and succeed? “When I heard Celtic I couldnt say no”.

Not only that but Kasper and Benji get a new friend for their smorgasbord and he gets their wisdom, friendship, and comraderie at a brand new club.

Final words, dont write off Van the Man before hes even begun.

IQ4,
Something has been bugging me and I thought I would ask you.
I’m sure youve heard that at the famous Ajax academy the kids are all taught to play the same way from 11 upwards to enable them to slot in seamlessly to the tier above.
Who selects/selected that style of play? Board, DOF, Majority shareholder?
Does the style of play change with the times or is it rigid?
———————————-
Hi MAHE:
I looked at Ajax film, books and training manuals while doing my badges, but couldn’t remember much about them, other than they were miles ahead of Scottish teams! I did some research to update myself and answer your questions ( with some help from ChatGPT ). And as you will note, Celtic are in the Dark Ages compared to Ajax.

The playing style at the Ajax Academy is not decided by a single individual. It is a permanent institutional identity rooted in the “Total Football” concept and codified through the club’s overarching philosophy. This attacking 4-3-3 system is standardized across all age groups from the youngest youth teams to the senior squad.

While the style is institutionalized, its day-to-day implementation, modern updates, and structural oversight are directed by top club leadership as follows:

DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL
Marijn Beuker oversees the entire football philosophy, development pathways, and training framework from the U8 teams up to the first team.

TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Alex Kroes collaborates on aligning the broader sporting strategy and squad building from the academy to the senior level.

ACADEMY COACHES
Former top-level players and specialized positional coaches execute the curriculum, using what they call the TIPS MODEL (Technique, Insight, Personality, Speed) to ensure every youth player is groomed for the unified Ajax system.

This is the blueprint Ajax uses to scout and evaluate every single player in the academy. Instead of focusing on who is winning games for them, coaches grade young players on four fundamental traits:

TECHNIQUE
This is the absolute foundation. A player must possess flawless ball control, precise passing with BOTH feet, a clean first touch, and the ability to shield the ball under pressure.

INSIGHT
This refers to tactical intelligence and spatial awareness. Ajax looks for players who can “read” the game, anticipate moves before they happen, and understand when to accelerate or slow down the tempo.

PERSONALITY
This evaluates a player’s mental fortitude. It includes leadership, communication, emotional control, and the willingness to work for the team. Ajax explicitly looks for players who show creativity and are not afraid to make mistakes.

SPEED
This is not just about raw physical sprinting. While physical pace is valued, Ajax heavily prioritizes SPEED OF THOUGHT – how fast a player can process information and execute a decision on the ball.

POSITIONAL ROTATION
In youth academies such as Celtic’s, a child is assigned a fixed position (like “left-back” or “striker”) at a very young age. Ajax does the exact opposite to foster TOTAL FOOTBALL.

UNIVERSAL DEVELOPMENT
Up until around age 15, youth players are regularly rotated into completely different positions across the pitch. A natural forward might spend a month playing as a central defender or a midfielder.

BUILDING COMPLETE PLAYERS
By playing different roles, a defender learns what a striker needs to succeed, and a midfielder learns the spatial pressures faced by a fullback.

THE 4-3-3 BLUEPRINT
Because every team at Ajax plays the exact same 4-3-3 formation, the geometric passing lanes and triangles remain identical. Players learn the responsibilities of every zone on the pitch, making them incredibly adaptable and fluid when they reach the first team.

Hope this answers your questions,
HH

Hi Mahe:
The only thing I’m upset about this deal is why it wasn’t done 2 months ago and certainly before Engels left. The policy of selling our best players before a Champions League playoff, then waiting until after we are eliminated to spend about 20% of what you took in while having a £70M cushion in the bank is utterly irrational. Even Lawwell reluctantly admitted it was ‘Inherently inefficient.’ It is inexplicable, defies explanation and is just stupid beyond belief. There is no reason on earth why this lad could not have faced LASK, and the feckless Board will have no explanation for it at the next AGM. MON couldn’t answer questions related to preparedness at the last presser, which tells you – there isn’t one.

It all depends on whether you are buying players so you can resell them for a profit, or are buying players who will become part of a successful team.

Celtic do the former, but dont seem to care about the latter. Which is an ass backwards way to run a football club and business.

buy good young players, give them proper coaching and integrate them into a team and system, and success will follow. And players who show they can learn and develop in a successful system will see their values appreciate. Tht’s how a team in Celtic’s situation is supposed to operate.

had they done that, Engels would have been sold for $40 million.

It ain’t rocket science.

lawell once said Rangers vdemise cost Celtic 10 million a year. Well, their choice to stick with Rangers and forego the CL costs $40 million a year, if not more. CL participation in year 1 brings in more money, which lets you buy better players, who then develop more by playing against better teams in the CL, which improves them, and … allows them to be resold for even more money in year 2. Rinse and repeat. Over 14 years, that is a lot of money that was left on the table.

its how most businesses work. I get that pro sports, including Football, doesnt necessarily follow standard business practices. Celtic certainly doesnt; it shits on its core market, who still cant wait to throw their money at it.

Given the market in which Celtic has operated since 2012, and its fans willingness to fund it regardless, you would need to be half brain dead not to make a profit running Celtic.

But you have to be fully brain fucking dead to turn your nose up at almost half a billion pounds since 2012.

Still doesn’t explain why he wasn’t brought in 2 months ago. If he’s the quality you think he is and cheap at the price, why not get him in for the qualifiers? It would have been a low risk. Could he have made the difference against Lask, who knows? Quite possibly. He already appears to have your backing and you could well be correct. If we had qualified and manage to attract some from list A, he could still have been a handy addition since he’s cheap.
As for buying quality over quantity, it sounds great on paper, I love the idea but maybe we should start with sourcing quality coaches and more importantly, quality fitness coaches cause when our quality new signings get injured but have to remain on the pitch cause we don’t have quality back up, we are back to square one.

Re offside flag.

Yup, we seem to get a lot of these calls in Scottish football, certainly more than in England and Europ whereby the move is allowed to complete.

With the pace of Hassan and Duran we’re going to see a lot more of these errors wrongly flagged before completion. I’d be calling it out now.

Apparently he is rated.

I notice he was our only central midfielder on the bench on Saturday so I guess the plan was to blood him when the match was won except it wasn’t until the final whistle went.

BTW when did you ever see a Celtic bench with no full backs and no midfielders apart from an untried 17 year old.

Interesting.

Where does the ‘manager’ fit in, and what is his role? (They seem to burn through a lot of them.)

Also, how many staff do they have in total, how much does it all cost, and how long do they tend to stay in post for?

Obviously couldn’t possibly happen at Celtic under the current ownership, and I suspect Scotland is too much of a backwater anyway, but it is good to know about.

One noticeable thing is the emphasis on ‘intelligence’. Wenger reckons top footballers have now reached the limits of their physical capabilities and that what will differentiate them from here on is their level of football intelligence. I’d like to know how they go about developing that. Do they eg limit screen time for the younger players?

Ex Machina

Wenger’s comments refer to top footballers, I guess he means the elite/ close to it.
These guys have an instinctive genius that I doubt can be taught. Just been watching an interview with Dalglish, the epitome of an intelligent footballer.

Lesser talents can no doubt work on improving that aspect but I’d guess this would be incremental increases with limits.

SteveNaive

Ernie,

Re developing intelligence, some big clubs now
Real, Barca, Bayern have installed huge screens at the training ground.
Coaches will stop the game and refer to their positions ( or lack of ) options and errors which tap into players perception of where they are at any given time.
Just on the previous Ajax system, lack of recent success has led some to suggest their TIPS system should be reversed… one of the first thing they teach boys is how to run… technique will come if others are in place.

Yes Wenger was referring specifically to elite players, but they don’t become elite solely on innate talent. They have had to develop their talent and he seemed clear that the same can be done with their football intelligence.

Our first and only priority when we sign players is to be able to sell them on for significant profit. We should be asking if they improve the team? Will they help us win games and win trophies? Will they help us qualify for the champions league? Will they excite the support?
If we can make £30m to £40m in player sales each season then who needs the champions league money. The champions league becomes a sideshow.

Bada, Ernie

Everything in that video clip is spot on. However, two things can be correct at the same time.

Celtic work to a specific domestic success ‘old firm ‘ model as it has proven , generally, to be successful this past 20 odd years, since life in the “slow lane”.

However, at the same time, the same people, namely, DD, Lawwell, Wilson have all been involved and are all 20+ yrs older. This is where their incompetence comes in.

They fail to recognise the outside threats to their dominance, especially at home.
They look at the continued success of Celtic as some sort of planned event, ignoring luck and the self sabotaging of rivals in that period.
They have not improved the stadium one bit during their tenure, bar the odd banner and lick of paint.
They let £80m sit in a bank account, unsure of what to do with it , except pay the tax on it.

These are not clever, astute, football people, you are giving them far too much credit here. They are bungling idiots, whose best days are at least a decade behind them.

What other club employs a 75 yr old Manager in Europe?

Name me one Celtic supporter who would have been unhappy with these players arriving at our club? Only the young lad has what you might call selling on value as we saw in past years, the others do not fit that mould, not saying that they might not be sold, but they do not fit the template of buying to sell. Seems we are back in for our original defensive midfield target from Italy we have been scouting for decades.
If the above happens I expect Benji and Hatate to be sold.
Will then see McGregor in Benji’s more forward role and we will have the privilege of seeing him passing backwards and sideways from higher up the field.

The only way we will get rid of Dermot and the board is through a season ticket boycott and this will never happen as long as there is a waiting list. The board are totally opposed to redeveloping the south stand even although there is plenty of cash in the bank to do so. If capacity is increased and there is no longer a waiting list the board will lose control over the season ticket holders so redevelopment will never take place. If Dermot retires and he is replaced by his son, a scenario that does not fill me with confidence after his performance at last year’s AGM, it will be more of the same and nothing will change.

Fingers crossed, and not Nygren.

I think the ongoing debate about Dermot Desmond’s tenure at Celtic Park especially here on Sentinelcelts focuses far too much on the financial aspect of things and completely ignores the political landscape that Celtic FC operates in and until both are combined and understood then the ongoing debate and arguments about his tenure are absolutely futile, tiresome and just noise and quite rightly should be ignored.

Ernie,

I´m talking about our history … not as in .. “If you know your history” as in cups and top goal scorers

If we go back to the beginning why is DD even at Celtic … how did he get the opportunity ?

Lets be honest here.

If season tickets didn’t exist, and fans could access tickets for each individual home game, how many games would sell out?

Other than the huns games of course, they’d be guaranteed to all go.

Where do you want to start your timeline? 1887?

I’m more interested in how a minority shareholder non exec gets to be called the owner of the Club.
