Duran at the double

Given the epic midweek collapse I really didn’t want to see the same team huff and puff their way through another 90 mintues so in a way I was happy changes had been forced upon us. Callum and Kasper were forced out through sickness/injury which saw Duran move central with Hassan getting his first start for his new employers, and the OX stepped in alongside Mika Baur in the middle of the park.

We knew what we were going to get from Falkirk, full energy and hunting in packs, and the Bairns started the game brightly but events quickly took a twist when with only five minutes on the clock Scott Bain had an absolute brainfart and slapped the ball to the feet of Camilo who gladly passed the ball into the empty net.

I wanted this dream start to be the catalyst for a high scoring romp, and it wasn’t just the goal giving me encouragement. John McGlynn had made what looked like a fatal tactical flaw,,,his fullbacks were standing off our wingers instead of coming out to the flank to meet them. This meant Yang and Hassan being constantly open to receive the pass and take on their direct opponent. I thought it was a crazy tactic and it later lead to our second goal when the inspace Yang fed the overlapping Tierney to lay off Camilo for his second of the day.

Two goals up at home should signal heavy pressure for the visitors as the relaxed starters and fresh subs take the game to them, instead our sieve gave up its usual prize. The leftback was non existent, the Keeper might have done better, and it wasnt the centrebacks but rather the right back who was forced all the way across to help, but ended up deflecting the ball into his own net.

Thats how the game finished, we take the win and move on but the Juggernaut feeling that was almost touchable just a few weeks has completely evaporated. This wasnt a good performance, it was a just enough display which is concerning because we need to find our rhythm sooner rather than later. In saying that we do have some positives to take home.

Duran once again proved we have signed a proper striker and to be honest I wouldn’t drop him for Hogh at the minute. Kasper would not have scored that second goal, it took a real burst of pace to get away from the last defender that the Dane just does not have.
The Ox was handy in Callums role but I personally thought Baur was the best midfielder on the park. His game intelligence shines through everytime I watch him,,always well positioned to quickly be at the heart of things, creating space to receive, not wasteful with his passing,,,he’s just a good footballer who has seamlessly slotted into life as a Celtic player. Hassan reminded me of Jota, very agile and a danger to defenders with the pace and confidence to go past a defender. He was effective in that respect but now needs to turn those attributes into assists and hopefully goals.

I believe Yang is improving under our current setup but if anything our defense is getting worse. We give up too many chances, at least a goal a game, and I can’t see Dane Murray fixing that when one of Trusty/CCV gets injured. It gets worse, KT got injured and Scales at leftback doesn’t cut the mustard so the defense will continue to be a bombscare for at least a while unless our new incoming leftback is fit enough and good enough to slot straight in.

There was no Reo in the squad with a supposed exit scuppering his involvement so this Van Der Berg deal will happen and the fee for the Japanese player should cover his much younger replacement.
Callum Osmond left the stadium in a moon boot and I’m starting to wonder if he’s an injury prone player that cannot be counted on. Colby might have left in a moonboot, instead his actual football took the brunt of a bad tackle and literally snapped in half which is a first for me.

We could really do with some positivity around the club and the obvious way to do that would entail a strong end to the transfer window.
For Martins sake this better happen as he has taken a proverbial kicking over the LASK outcome and as he admitted we are a million miles away from where he wants us to be.
If only there was a way to change that.

IQ4,
Thanks for Ajax chat although I’m still perplexed because you posted its a permanent 4-3-3 which, when you think about it, might end up getting left behind like every system eventually so why wed yourself to a playing style when styles evolve?
Secondly I noticed one of the managers job is team tactics and thought wht tactics he was hired and ordered to play 4-3-3 and therefore he has one tactical decision, two deep and one ahead in midfield or one deep and two ahead?
Anyways thanks again Sir!
Always a pleasure.
Hail Hail

Absolutely loving these midfielders arriving.
Hey why not pluck one of Hollands best 19 year olds and do a Stan Petrov on him?
That good Scandinavian that isnt enjoying life in Italy, get him on a try before you buy.
Genetis is cheaper now, aye why not.
Thanks for the memories Reo, but we are moving on.
Callum can now be phased out and our defense better be much more protected.

Where does Benji fit though and is he the sacrificial lamb for a new look stronger midfield?

Lets have a poll,,,,
Should we sell/bench Benji to get a proper midfield balance?

Me,,,yes.

San Luis @9.03pm,

Yes, Chic is still alive, and a bit like Sevco, he won’t curl up etc….

BBC Scotland even done a Icons of Football progamme on him?

Watching Villa game and ref is giving Arsenal everything.

Arteta’s got them employing all the dark arts.

Wonder where he learned them?

AweNaw,
Enjoyed your patter today not that I agree with every bit of it.
What your comments brought home is that I am happy at the USA investment in certain SPL clubs precisely because they arent up for Masonic bs and will seriously lawyer up if they need to while living elsewhere and not suffering personally.

I see us getting well outspent by the Ibrox mob and although we dont try to blog about them as a rule heres my take on whats going on over there.

To sum it up in a nutshell they have frontloaded four transfer windows into one, from the outside it looks like a drunken sailor approach but they can do it and still be fine because they dont have to meet Europe’s FSR standards and can hide behind the scenes THEN balance the books when they meet European football again.

I believe thats legal.

I also believe this 13m striker is a total “playing to the galary” signing and probably poor value on the pitch but s statement off it and as such I wouldn’t want to be in the lads shoes because he doesnt have a clue what hes walking into , doesnt know that he must satisfy all camps. Cant have our alledged 13m striker blessing himself now can we?
Does he know that?

As for one of their owners being caught out for a 140 quickie with some broad,,Ive said it before and Ill say it again,,,there is a peace of mind that comes with our aged board. They wont be selfied with a white nose, glass of champagne and skimpy women on their lap.
Our bunch ain’t perfect but give me boring over skeletons bursting out of the closet anyday.

Hail Hail

Hi MAHE:
Question One.
I’m not trying to justify the 4-3-3, just reporting on it from the Ajax web site, to answer some of Ernie’s follow up questions.

Question Two.
There’s a lot of tactical decisions to be made beyond just the formation.  I guess any Ajax manager has to start with 4-3-3, then he has many decisions to make on movement and style for each opponent, which might include the following:

DEFENCE: Does he opt for low block, a high press, an offside trap, zonal defence, or man to man marking? Does he double up on a particular threat?

ATTACK: Does he opt for a counter attacking style, overloads to one area, a focus on one or both wings, or a Barca type tiki taka style to tire out the defence?

GENERAL:  Does he opt for a counter-pressing style, trying to retrieve the ball immediately it is lost, or perhaps go for an inverted full back or winger?

Being reported that KT’s injury not as bad as first thought, and there’s a chance he could even be available for Wednesday.

Couple of good additions. We may end up enjoying the Europa campaign……certainly have a better chance of winning games. Cheer up everybody, in MON we trust.

I just hope that tomorrow we’re not down to loans at the Mvuka, Adamu, Cvancar level.

What an utter travesty that was!
