Here Comes The Summer!

Morning, all.

A quick perusal of the sports pages down here informs me of the last day of the transfer window, but we at Celtic can sit back rather smugly and refuse to hit the panic button. After all, the last day of our window isn’t until Thursday-and that’s plenty of time!

Our transfer window has been very disappointing, not to put too fine a point on it. We watched our side manfully rise to the occasion last season with a highly unlikely double, something that we would normally celebrate with gusto, but we knew that our squad needed serious work done on it. There were gaps everywhere, not just in our starting XI, but also in the squad as a whole.

That starting XI was as poor as we’d seen in over thirty years, but the impact of possible suspensions or further injuries had us really bricking ourselves. The quality wasn’t there, it’s as simple as that.

Yesterday, a year old BR interview resurfaced. It was the one where he said that the summer 2025 window was a crucial one for us, yet the business done was nowhere near good enough-and, most importantly, nowhere near early enough. We had once again waited till the CL qualifiers were over before we made any move-by which time it was too late-and those we eventually signed both played in the same position, and neither was anywhere near the quality required. It was also one of the few positions that didn’t need strengthening in the first place. So if you can make sense of that, I hear there will be a vacancy or two for you soon enough on the Celtic board!

The lack of depth in our squad really hit home over the last week with the injuries to McGregor and Høgh, as well as the one to Osmand. Nor should we forget that Donovan is clearly struggling to do the ninety, and CCV looks likely to break down every time he takes to the field. We don’t have a back-up keeper either, so an injury or suspension there will really hamper us. We went into the transfer window ELEVEN weeks ago knowing that we needed the following as a minimum-

Keeper. Centre back. Left back. Big hard bastert No 6. A proper No 8 plus a back up. A replacement for Engels. A right winger. Two genuine goal scoring centre forwards-big ones! We have so far signed Baur for the No 8, Høgh and Duran as the goal scorers, and Hassan wide right. £30m the lot, which sounds ambitious. But it barely scratches the surface.

We are now at the stage of the window where the Celtic CEO and CFO actually get busy with the dregs of what remains available. Yes, we apparently have two targets on their way to finalise deals. No, neither of them was known to most of us beforehand. No, still no sign of ANY of the defensive additions we desperately need. Nor a No 6.

All of which makes me wonder whether that BR interview resurfacing yesterday was a good or bad thing. Because when he correctly pointed out that our signing policy was nowhere near good enough-and, most importantly, nowhere near early enough-it was just like hearing one of those earworm things. You know, an annoying tune that you were never a fan of but you can’t get it out of your head? Lasts for ages, yet batters you numb time and time again? Well, get used to it. Because we will hear it again soon, just with a slightly different Irish brogue.

And then, almost as if on cue, we will hear another familiar refrain, that of a senior board member saying that mistakes were made and lessons will be learned.

Whoopy-whoop-whoop. Just in time to hail The Glorious Balance Sheet. And prepare for the same again next summer, and the same set of platitudes.

It is coming up to that time of year when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.

As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.

https://sentinelcelts.com/2026/08/31/saturday-naps-competition-2/

And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!

https://sentinelcelts.com/2026/08/31/saturday-football-accumulator/

We will be looking for volunteers for this year’s ACCA , so please join up!

Both these initiatives are FREE TO ENTER, so please click on the links provided.

September 1, 2026 8:06 am

D R M has also very kindly volunteered to operate a competition over the three days of the AYR GOLD CUP meeting. September 18-20.

Usual rules, with a selection from each race.

There is £100 of prize money, and as alway is FREE TO ENTER!

More details are available on the dedicated page, so click on the link.

I intended to write about the Ibrox ticketing fiasco, but I’m waiting to see if Celtic make any further move on this. Personally, I’d tell them to ram their tickets permanently, and tell them they’re getting eff all from us in return.

Spot on and the reason I stopped going after Ange. So where do we go from here? Its groundhog day every year. Martin will be away this time next year and new Manager may get a first year bounce from the board ie one or two early signings but unless thier is a major change of direction it will be more of the same.

As a good friend of mine put it….

Gordon Dalziel said the Huns were grabbing anything from Asda in their shopping basket and we were shopping at Marks and Spencer’s

We are doing our usual though and shopping at the discount out of date aisle looking for any bargains …

We don’t go to the shops to get steak or chicken as that’s what we want for our dinner.

We decide what we are having for dinner based on what’s in the sale.

From 2021, from our best manager this decade .

” Ange Postecoglou suggested he might not have been forceful enough in his demands for new signings as took responsibility for Celtic’s latest Champions League failure. Celtic missed out on the group stage for a fourth year running as a 2-1 extra-time defeat by Midtjylland consigned them to a 3-2″.

I’ve genuinely no problem with the quality this summer, especially compared to the two chuckle brothers we signed permanently on £5m + fees last year ( Tounetki and Balikwisha), but my issue is they are weeks too late.

Room for another 4 loans just like last season’s dross and makeweights :
Tomas Cvancara, forward (Borussia Monchengladbach); Benjamin Arthur, forward (Brentford); Junior Adamu, forward (Freiburg); Joel Mvuka, midfielder (Lorient).

Saracchi and Araujo were good additions it is fair to say.

Athur, who’s a CB/RB, looked decent enough the few times he played. Brentford sent him on loan for the season to Portsmouth. He’ll probably get more game time than with us, but I think a deal was there to be made.

I’d describe him as a makeweight rather than dross!

So a left back, centre back, mid and forward to complete this season’s surprise loan package.

As for right back can’t see our custodians identifying a fourth in the building as a priority!

Shim Mheuka is undergoing a medical now ahead of a season-long loan move to Celtic from Chelsea.

I’m going to assume this is simply to provide cover for Callum Osmand, who hobbled out of Celtic Park on Saturday wearing a protective boot, as pictured by us.

At just 18, I can’t see Mheuka coming in and getting huge amounts of game time, especially with the other attacking options already at the club.

But it does raise one big question. What does this say about Jonny Kenny and his future at Celtic?

September 1, 2026 11:03 am

CRAIG76

He is very highly rated. EPL2 POTY last season, and 17 goals in 17 games for their U-21 side. I definitely think the Osmand injury is worse than first feared but it looks like the same could be said for the one to Høgh.

The failure over last week becomes even clearer this week. No top targets signed, we’ve went down the list and went for a prospect on a permanent, and a few loans.
Every single one of them cheaper in wages and reek of short termism.
Which, given MON won’t be here next season, probably makes the most sense.
If we sign a LB I’ll be amazed.

‘San Luis

There is a business strategy, but that requires there to be no continuity or stability on the footballing front. Everything is short term. Managers and coaches and their support staff come and go. Players are bought in, if they are any good they are sold on. Things are allowed to slide to the point the support are exasperated, then there’s a brief period of improvement to keep the season book renewals steady. They’re the key to it all. That’s what gives the Club its value. That is what will attract a buyer when the time comes. That and the potential for growth.

The endgame, whatever it is, no doubt will be to Mr Desmond’s financial benefit. But that’s OK, because he’s Irish.

I can understand why people think it’s incompetence, because that’s what it looks like, but it isn’t.

It puts me in mind of Les Dawson playing the piano. Looks and sounds inept, but requires a lot of skill to do.

September 1, 2026 12:00 pm

Ernie

I’ve no problem with short term hires, I’m certain we sign most players on the promise that if they do well they’ll be sold on after years two. I also think that the managerial malarkey nowadays is a two year stint ( 3 at most ) and on to the merry go round they go.
Again, no problem with that either.

The incompetence comes in because we’re not even doing that and we’re now in our third 6 month cycle of short termism and it won’t improve in January, or not at least until MON leaves.

Furthermore, our poor succession planning for player sale and recruitment meant we missed out on top dollar sales for Maeda and Engels in August and January last season , costing us at least £20m . Throw in hanging on to Reo for too long then you start to see a pattern emerging that acutely impacts on their profit model. They are actually costing themselves money at every turn. That’s not a strategy or a kpi, it’s utter incompetence by the bungling old duffers who run us.

Again, you’re giving them all way too much credit. There is absolutely no skill involved at all. None.

I’ve given up giving a feck about these transfer windows. Nothing is going to change with this regime in charge. I’ve got too many other stressful things going on without this one adding to it.
Even bringing in National youth team captains ain’t going to cut the mustard for me, we don’t have the coaching or fitness capabilities to advance their careers nor put them to good use for our teams benefit. Bernardo and Engels all over again.
Wake me up when the season ends

It’s like some guy is sitting in a room saying ‘Eh, you go here, you go there’ for tens of Millions. You very rarely hear managers complain about losing their star player(s).

All to keep the clubs within some sort of monetary boundary (whatever it’s called today!)

Then the loans!

Meanwhile, we can only sit and watch.

Thanks, mate. Andy is right. We either go back to the original 7500 fans, or both clubs impose an away fans ban.

Of course, one major issue there is the disparity between the clubs regarding home draws in cup matches. It might need to include the proviso that cup matches are done on a pro rata basis, regardless of what the draw states. Can’t see that happening.

Re the SFA “old firm” equivalence charge.
Surely the £100k is derisory compensation for the away club?
Even an unattractive tie, attracting a 50% crowd, would generate three times that, assuming £25 per ticket and what I understand is the 15% allowance for the home club providing the venue, cost of policing etc.
A 50,000 crowd for a bigger draw and that’s a share of £1m.

Hope it’s the Huns we draw.
