Here Comes The Summer!

Morning, all.

A quick perusal of the sports pages down here informs me of the last day of the transfer window, but we at Celtic can sit back rather smugly and refuse to hit the panic button. After all, the last day of our window isn’t until Thursday-and that’s plenty of time!

Our transfer window has been very disappointing, not to put too fine a point on it. We watched our side manfully rise to the occasion last season with a highly unlikely double, something that we would normally celebrate with gusto, but we knew that our squad needed serious work done on it. There were gaps everywhere, not just in our starting XI, but also in the squad as a whole.

That starting XI was as poor as we’d seen in over thirty years, but the impact of possible suspensions or further injuries had us really bricking ourselves. The quality wasn’t there, it’s as simple as that.

Yesterday, a year old BR interview resurfaced. It was the one where he said that the summer 2025 window was a crucial one for us, yet the business done was nowhere near good enough-and, most importantly, nowhere near early enough. We had once again waited till the CL qualifiers were over before we made any move-by which time it was too late-and those we eventually signed both played in the same position, and neither was anywhere near the quality required. It was also one of the few positions that didn’t need strengthening in the first place. So if you can make sense of that, I hear there will be a vacancy or two for you soon enough on the Celtic board!

The lack of depth in our squad really hit home over the last week with the injuries to McGregor and Høgh, as well as the one to Osmand. Nor should we forget that Donovan is clearly struggling to do the ninety, and CCV looks likely to break down every time he takes to the field. We don’t have a back-up keeper either, so an injury or suspension there will really hamper us. We went into the transfer window ELEVEN weeks ago knowing that we needed the following as a minimum-

Keeper. Centre back. Left back. Big hard bastert No 6. A proper No 8 plus a back up. A replacement for Engels. A right winger. Two genuine goal scoring centre forwards-big ones! We have so far signed Baur for the No 8, Høgh and Duran as the goal scorers, and Hassan wide right. £30m the lot, which sounds ambitious. But it barely scratches the surface.

We are now at the stage of the window where the Celtic CEO and CFO actually get busy with the dregs of what remains available. Yes, we apparently have two targets on their way to finalise deals. No, neither of them was known to most of us beforehand. No, still no sign of ANY of the defensive additions we desperately need. Nor a No 6.

All of which makes me wonder whether that BR interview resurfacing yesterday was a good or bad thing. Because when he correctly pointed out that our signing policy was nowhere near good enough-and, most importantly, nowhere near early enough-it was just like hearing one of those earworm things. You know, an annoying tune that you were never a fan of but you can’t get it out of your head? Lasts for ages, yet batters you numb time and time again? Well, get used to it. Because we will hear it again soon, just with a slightly different Irish brogue.

And then, almost as if on cue, we will hear another familiar refrain, that of a senior board member saying that mistakes were made and lessons will be learned.

Whoopy-whoop-whoop. Just in time to hail The Glorious Balance Sheet. And prepare for the same again next summer, and the same set of platitudes.

LASK top of league, 15 points from 5 games, 15 goals for, 2 against.

We should approach their manager for next season. Probably preempt Sevco.

I watch German games fairly regularly, and I’ve mentioned before to you that Eintracht appear somewhat easy to deal with when it comes to selling their top players. IMO, it really began after they won the EL.

The current strategy may well revolve around a total reset, I sure you are right about that. But they could probably have saved themselves the bother-and the 8th place finish-if they hadn’t sold off the family silver at the first flash of a tenner.

Must be a right bitch supporting two teams where getting a player’s name on a jersey is just a total waste of money.

Idah scores for Swansea, 2-0 up vs Watford.

West Ham 1-0 up on Wolves.

If he continues to progress, he’ll be out of our reach shortly. Bit like Pierre Sage, who I recommended when BR left-though why he opted for Palace beats me.

Could be worse. They could be playing each other.😊

Gineitis anonymous so far in a poor game.

Switching to see how Engels is doing. 2-1 vs Wolves now.

They might organise a testimonial for you when you retire.

BMCUWP,

I support two player cash and carry’s. That’s 135m in 35m out. So far. The 100m surplus will not be spent.

The latest figures also dont show the 95m for Etikete, 75m for Marmoush and the 50m for CL participation.

The club must be sitting on around 750m

And will be doing well to finish 8th this year.

I predict a riot

BMCUWP,

Aye and I’d have to buy a ticket

“The club must be sitting on around 750m”

I don’t profess to understand their strategy, but with a cashpile like that, be grateful for the 50 + 1 rule.

Barrhill? Stopped at that station many times back in the day, heading for the Stranraer-Larne ferry. No-one ever got on or off the train there. Ever. Spooky or what? I think it was a latter day Brigadoon! Hope you and the family are well.

Hail Hail.

Some game at West Ham. 4-2 over Wolves. Engels is being outmuscled in the West Ham midfield.

Torino down 0-1 to Monza. Gineitis not impressing today. Often gets caught wrong side of Monza attackers. Maybe he is going somewhere, because he is definitely not risking getting injured.

September 1, 2026 9:22 pm

About thirty years ago, my A78 route to Stranraer was blocked. Had to take a long detour via a wee place called Barr. Nae fun at all, especially in a Class 2 lorry.

September 1, 2026 9:27 pm

Looks like Arne has been getting coached on how to take corners. Every one has been whipped in, with pace, right onto the 6 yard line in front of goal. Not seen any of the over hit ones we became so used to.
Coaching? It’ll never catch on.

Puzzled by Gineitis. He is taking up good positions in space, quite far advanced, yet is not calling for the ball.

Has hardly touched the ball this half.

Gineitis has been an empty jersey today.

Celtic express interest in taking Feyenoord right back Lotomba on loan.

Wouldn’t be hard. Celtic ladies took better corners than Arne did with us. 😊

Torino with penalty. Defender handles Che Adams shot.

Ref to monitor.

Chalked off.

Gineitis not impressive at all.

I though Maloney spoke really well in press conference today. None of this blethering for the sake of it like an old uncle, that MON uses to disarm them. ” Young man”.

Celtic had been linked with Motherwell LB Longelo. From the little I saw of him last season, he Looked decent going forward, but not as good defensively. Both Motherwell and the player have been pushing for a sale. Now being linked with the zombies

They didnt get Rodri, but it Looks like Real Madrid came out the strongest from the transfer window. Atletico did some good business, but their biggest move was a non-move – refusing to sell Alvarez.will keeping a talented but unhappy star be a good move? Will see.

Window closes on Thursday but I believe A list players have to be registered tomorrow to play in the Europa League group games (B list players can be added after).
