That Was The Window That Was
Morning, all.
Now that the transfer window has finally “slammed shut” after eighty long days, we can look back and judge whether or not it has been a good one for us. The obvious winner, based purely on transfers in and out, is The Glorious Balance Sheet. But even that comes with an obvious caveat, that the transfers out prior to our Champions League qualifier completely shafted our chances of success. That’s a £50m hole beneath the waterline right away, and hardly for the first time.
The loss of Engels before that match, along with the loan departure of Bernardo and Ox’s suspension, left us reliant on McCowan and the already checked out Hatate to serve alongside McGregor and Nygren. This against a Linz side who were known to play five in midfield. The return leg should have been the final and long overdue wake up call to everyone that this club has been crying out for a defensive midfielder since Neil Lennon was in his pomp. Again, this has been ignored.
The role of the defensive midfielder is rarely the one that wins all the end of season prizes. It isn’t one that gets names emblazoned across the back of jerseys, or carries the huge price tags. But it is one that is understood by every football person, from the terraces to the boardrooms. Every boardroom except ours, apparently. For nearly twenty years.
We continue to ignore this at our peril. We can’t keep relying on the woefully unsuited McGregor for much longer anyway. He will be 34yo at the end of this campaign, so it is imperative that we sign someone for the holding role inside the next year. He has provided a Band-Aid for the board at the expense of his own career these last six years, but Father Time will decree that his replacement must be signed next summer. I can’t wait.
The board are to be congratulated, in fairness, on the signings they did make before the Linz game. Høgh, though sadly injured at the moment, is the big target man we’ve been looking for. Duran is the needle sharp striker that Celtic fans have always loved. Hassan will torment defences everywhere, and had best get used to being double teamed, and the ways to use that for the benefit of our team. As it is, defenders seem unable to get a foot in against him. Baur is a dynamic young midfielder with the ability to run all day while making the killer pass or tackle as required. But those who came afterwards? The jury is still out, but we will know more by the time the first international window opens.
We did get a keeper good enough to challenge Sinisalo (who deserves the jersey at the moment). But our defensive replacements are highly questionable. Lotomba is a right back, which is hardly a priority position, though he can apparently cover the other flank-let’s hope so! No additions at centre back, so it’s Scales (if he isn’t needed at LB) and Murray alongside CCV and Trusty. Sørensen should do well for us in midfield, though I’d prefer him not to be a loanee. Van Den Berg is presumably one for the future as he joins the two teenage Chelsea lads in the stands for our European campaign, but at least his signing is permanent. He comes with a decent pedigree, and I’m not gonna quibble simply because he is a teenager.
Up front, Shim The Tim will go through Scottish defences like a knife through butter, but he will need the sort of protection that refs rarely bestow on Celtic strikers. And we have the three earlier signings plus Osmand as well. But wide left leaves us heavily reliant on the ever improving Yang, who we won’t see again after tomorrow till next month, and a hopefully returning Jota. Anyone putting their faith in Tounekti needs their head examined.
I find it sad that I’m happy to see the back of Hatate. When he first arrived, he really lit up our midfield. His range of passing was top notch, and he wasn’t too shy to fire in a shot or put in a tackle. I’ll miss that player, but I won’t miss the one we had for the last two seasons. Even so, I wish him well, as I do Jonny Kenny. He will score plenty, and we will wonder why he just couldn’t do it in our Hoops. So will he, but he won’t be the first player whose desire to succeed at his club undermined his chances of doing so.
Overall I think that this window has improved our squad, and that is a crucial factor to consider when determining whether it has been successful or not. But the board do not get pass marks based on that alone. Indeed, the good work done is completely undermined by the timing of what was done. That timing probably cost us whatever chance we had of winning our qualifier, and that lot have form for this. We should not allow that to be swept under the carpet come the AGM, for example.
They need to learn that the transfer window is open so long for a bloody good reason, and not as a reminder to bugger off on holiday. Managers want to work with as many of their squad as possible during preseason training. New signings want the deal done as soon as possible so that they can have longer to get to know their new colleagues, their new system, their new environment. And, dare I say it, their new home-because who wants to fit house hunting into a packed three games a week schedule?
I’m disappointed that we have so many players on loan instead of on permanent deals, but that is something we have to contend with now and again. But my main disappointment is one that I’ve shared with you for far too long now, and that is the absence yet again of a big hard bastert in midfield. I’m tired of saying it, you’re tired of hearing it, but here we are.
Make it stop, Celtic. Just sign one.

Said the other day that I didn’t think Ipswich were using Maeda to get best of his ability.
They played him deep as extra cover for left defender.
He looked lost.
Tonight he is drifting aimlessly between midfield and front without involvement.
His strength is pressing and getting behind with pace.

Thoughts and prayers rebus
Watching Maeda tonight playing an alien game to him. It’s amazing how many of our top players never really cut it when they move on and I have said it time and again. There’s not many teams play like us domestically. Constantly on the front foot always looking to attack. Players move to mid or lower table teams in other leagues who play a totally different style of football and suddenly either their style doesn’t suit or the team don’t play to their strengths.
Thats one of the reasons I am quite hopeful about this new guy sorensen. He played for a dominant danish team, excelled and got his multimillion move to Parma in Serie A a lower table team and although he got plenty game time they decided to move him on after a year. Sound familiar? That’s why I think now he is back in a dominant team he might be a diamond in midfield.
My thoughts align with Bobby in that the window was good but the timing failed. Player wise Im delighted, our best window in decades raising the overall quality of the squad which afterall is the aim.
As for left back, we have 3 now (KT , Lotomba, Emenalo) so I don’t get the exasperation.
DM, the midfield looks very strong and the new bhoys will shield the defense better than the last bunch. Sorenson in particular looked like he sits deep and Baur is quick to recover and provide the double pivot.
We took out 4 loan deals. I dont mind a loan keeper at all, and as KT will always be first choice I dont mind a left back on loan in that position because if we buy one it would be wasted outlay and wages, therefore just waste the wage on someone else’s talent and use them whilst here. It seems that Bell-Walker struck up a most unlikely partner for loans in Chelsea because they correctly agree a club that must win every game is best for their youth at thats the correct mentality and thsts where Chelsea also wish to be as a club. Make no mistake, it is a good thing to have access to world class young players to fill our gaps and I for one am happy at this unofficial linkup.
Every department in the team is stronger and bar one monumental fuck up result which was a freak result I would be handing out praise to our PLC who rarely deserve it.
He was always going to spend and if I had asked you would you be happy with 35m spent and a better team you wouldn’t have answered no.
Hail Hail
AweNaw,
With regards to R2ngers you see conspiracy and plots were I see a plan. It might be a crazy plan yes, but the plan to replicate us in becoming a player trading club to help bridge the gap isnt the worst idea in the world.
In the catering industry a restaurant doesn’t make profits the first two or three years, that profit generally pays off the initial investment then the 2-10 years after opening brings the true profit.
They’ve bought a big squad and flashed the cash, I reckon they frontloaded Derek knowing they don’t need to touch the biscuit tin for the next three windows and should profit on their bunch then mayve spend some of that. From a footballing viewpoint I understand that approach because,,,,
a,,,their squad fell short last year in the split so making it bigger improves the odds of keeping the pace all the way
b,,,It was Martin who saved us and hes leaving plus we had a rebuild so the odds of being Champions this year and/or next year improve by spending big now.
c,,,they will spend and not bank therefore one turnaround in fortunes can result in a 60m plus for them, 40 from the CL and the 20 we bank annually. Hit that jackpot once and suddenly they could dominate.
Hail Hail

Ernie:
I have been surprised by many, many things on this blog. But to be accused of lack of scriptural awareness was pretty stunning. Many people who know me, which you clearly do not, are going to find that very amusing.
The expression “Poor, deluded fool” did not ring any bells with me at all. Here’s why:
When the Old Testament was being drummed into me by my Wee Free Presbyterian parents, their austere, puritanical, Calvinistic minister and inerrantist Sabbatarian Sunday School teachers, it was of course the Authorised King James V version, which is still used exclusively to this day in the Church. They refuse to countenance any of the numerous varied translations, all of which translate it differently, with no uniformity. It is based on their belief that it is the most accurate and faithful version available in the English language today.
In their view, two essential and fundamental principles undergird the Authorised Version:
Most Bible translations today reject either or (more usually) both of these principles. I have never read later translations, as my enforced immersion in the original had turned me off it forever.
The expression “poor, deluded fool” does not appear anywhere in Isaiah 44, or anywhere at all for that matter in either the Old or New Testament of the King Janes V version. While it may sound like a classical phrase, quoted by pedants, it actually originates from modern, paraphrased Bible translations.
For your edification, here is the true original for the pastiche you quoted and the verses either side:
19. And none considereth in his heart, neither is there knowledge nor understanding to say, I have burned part of it in the fire; yea, also I have baked bread upon the coals thereof; I have roasted flesh, and eaten it: and shall I make the residue thereof an abomination? shall I fall down to the stock of a tree?
20. He feedeth on ashes: a deceived heart hath turned him aside, that he cannot deliver his soul, nor say, Is there not a lie in my right hand?
21. Remember these, O Jacob and Israel; for thou art my servant: I have formed thee; thou art my servant: O Israel, thou shalt not be forgotten of me.
Maybe you should think again about insulting people you do not know, and with zero knowledge of their background or education?

Ipswich might not have taken the best managerial option available to them. If O’Neil persists in playing Maeda out of position, he is weakening two areas of his side. They cannot afford to do that. They either play him where he can be effective, or don’t play him at all.
Mahe
Disagree re. left back .
Lotomba is a right back who can play left , so he’s not a left back. The Chelsea boy has never played a senior game and is fkn injured.
Why not just sign a left back as they are going to get minutes every game considering the fitness of KT.
We also sold Engels without a replacement and I’m not sure we have one yet.
I also notice there hasn’t much been said about the 3 club signings not making the Europa squad , the way there was last season when Inamura and Yamada were left out.

I know a lot of the blog members are still unhappy and critical of the tardiness. Honestly, we don’t belong in the Champions League. I am enthused with the signings. I think we have brought in some great young talent and we have the experienced veterans to help them along. Looking forward to the games…..especially watching Duran…..how did we manage to get this special talent?

“Why not just sign a left back as they are going to get minutes every game considering the fitness of KT.”
Understand where you are coming from but realistically if we buy a player they won’t improve with the last 20 so why not keep a stream of good loans coming through left back when the opportunity to develop within means curtailing that lads career as nothing he does will put KT on the bench.
If I were a Club CEO in that position I also would sanction the loan stance but there’s levels to loans and these guys should be good.
It’s also worth pointing out Sorenson will be entering the group of Scandinavian friends and we have a fee attached. He just needs to perform to join the Viking Collective.
Lotombo has one season to impress and get a deal, he will play his ass off.
I see a lot of players who want a BIG season. Ten new guys is one hell of a switch-up and we’ve got the right to pulloff the transition from signed to first team player.

Let’s face it, where we are now is likely to be a high point.
A once proud Euro giant barely able to be taken seriously.
We have become inured to failure.
We spend so much time in self examination/ recrimination/judgement, denial and blame we have become a laughing stock.
We are more than able to win a diddy third rate league forever. But so what?
Like last season we will maintain some sort of competitiveness from a collection of second bests and barely competent in house “talents” to beat whatever is put up against us.
The best of those we nurture: Duran Nygren AJ will go as they continue to shine and attract interest.
Who can blame them?
Kenny D and Henrik left because they knew their talent was never gonna be matched by ambition. 50 years ago, 20 years ago
The worst of the rest are unfortunately Scottish which leaves us incredibly short in terms of Euro quotas for the next season and beyond.
The 17/8 ratio will be tested, particularly as Calmac and JF and KT fall off the roster.
We will be lucky to find 4/5 homegrown of any quality. The EL will soon be beyond us.
We are destined to be ECL also rans. Playing against the unpronounceables.
This season was the last chance to compete above EL.
