Improvement Needed?
Morning, all.
Heading into three very important games in three different competitions which hit us over eight days might not seem the best time to assess how things have gone so far, but bear with me. We have the international break coming up straight afterwards, so would that not be a better time for assessment? What about when we come back, with our four league games to complete the first round being against Motherwell, Hearts, Hibs and Dundee United? Or wait till the second international window when these will have been completed and we will have some sense of how our Europa League campaign is doing?
Well, as I said-bear with me! MON decided on some heavy squad rotation at Perth on Wednesday, and I think that will be something we will have to get used to, as it makes sense. For that game it was all about getting game time for some players while giving others a rest, but in future I expect it to be done on a horses for courses basis. This will mean adjusting the attack and the midfield according to our schedule. Picking the games when sacrificing some midfield bite for the playmaking and scoring abilities of Nygren makes sense, or when the speed of Duran or Mheuka is preferred to the presence of Høgh. Etc.
Once he decides on his No 1 in goals, I’d expect the back line to pick itself. Johnston and Tierney at FB, Donovan and Scales when not. I’m fine with all of that, but he has to find a way of preventing teams cutting through us with ease and getting shots on goal. That might not be so easy with the personnel we’ve got. That means we need to learn to press harder, higher and tighter as a unit, something we have failed to do so far this season.
MON Mk1 didn’t have these issues. Having already seen that Paul Lambert couldn’t do it all on his own, he brought in Neil Lennon. The guy who was playing the Makalele role before Makalele had thought of it! Unless we’ve got one hiding in the reserves, we don’t have that luxury at the moment. I’ll say it again-get one signed!
Although we haven’t seen all of the new signings yet, I have to admit to being quite pleased with those we have. Sorensen still needs more time to adjust, granted, but the others have shown up well. As I pointed out yesterday, we have to work on getting the best out of BOTH Høgh and Duran-rather than either/or-but it’s fair to say that I’m probably happier with the summer signings than any time since 2021. Certainly happier than this time last year, when “mistakes were made” by the board’s own admission.
We have six wins from six games in the league, and while we would definitely have preferred more dominant displays in most of them, the stat tells the story. We are one tie away from Hampden in the League Cup. We have a roster in the EL that gives us every chance of progressing further.
We have a mix of permanent and temporary new signings which are better than we have been forced to endure recently, and who give us hope for the future instead of hope we can sign better the next time!
What we don’t have, and cannot influence, is better domestic officials. I’d like to think that being on the end of four dodgy decisions in our last three games, each of which should have been a goal to us, is just coincidence or bad luck. I would. But I don’t. I’ve had sixty years experience of this already, and while I will say that VAR has improved things, those basterts will still use any means still available to them to cheat us at every turn. You know it, they know it. And it still happens.
The best way to improve VAR is to upgrade it considerably. No more camera angles like Jota at Motherwell, or Hassan at Perth. The SPFL could easily take out a loan for this, repayable over five years by reducing the prize money in the SPL each year by, say, 10%. Or whatever. They won’t, though.
The next best way to improve it is by sanctioning officials who go against IFAB recommendations. Things like raising an offside flag too early, or calling the ref to the monitor when he shouldn’t be. Alan Muir should have been an example, not a martyr for mibbery.
Speaking of which, has Collum ditched his monthly résumés? I wonder whose idea that was.

It’s here, folks! The return of our football and racing competitions!
SATURDAY 12th September is when the betting aficionados amongst us have to get our thinking caps on again.
As usual, our site will run a NAPS COMPETITION with some healthy prize money, and once again it will start on St Leger Day in September and run through till the last day of Royal Ascot in June. There will be a short break from the end of November till the end of January.
https://sentinelcelts.com/2026/08/31/saturday-naps-competition-2/
And for those whose betting interests are mainly centred on the football, we will also run our MAGNIFICENT SEVEN accumulator, starting on the same day and finishing when we no longer have eight leagues to pick from. Usually the end of April. Let’s hope that it gives us a more magnificent return than the litany of near-misses and total failures we got last term!

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2026-27*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #9 ST JOHNSTONE 0 CELTIC 1 (BAUR)*
Good evening, friends.
The team lines showed 5 changes to our starting line up including a debut for goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. Against St Johnstone! Ultimately, the result was acceptable but only after what was possibly our poorest first half display of the season so far.
Most of that opening 45 was spent with the ball being within 40 yards of the St Johnstone goal. Loads of deliveries from both of our wingers but most of those deliveries were pretty useless with Høgh in particular deprived of any real opportunities to make any impact. But the clearest chance of the first half came at the other end in the 19th minute. A rare expedition into Celtic’s half saw the cross come into the box for the striker to hit it flush from 10 yards out. Johnstone’s first ever save in a Celtic jersey was a cracker, turning the attempt over the bar.
Goalless at half time and no changes made to the line up. However, we did start to move the ball a bit quicker and engineer some decent interchanges around their box. And with 52 minutes on the phone, we had the breakthrough. After a series of crosses into the box, the bobbling ball was captured by Høgh who slipped it across to Hassan. Our Naughty Boy nutmegged the defender and fired the ball back across the 6 yard box where Baur was on hand for a simple slot away to score his first ever goal for Celtic.
13 minutes later and it appeared that Celtic had a 2nd. A Tounekti lob wedge from the left hand side evaded the goal frame but was headed back into the danger area by Høgh for Hassan to slot the ball home. The linesman had flagged that Tounekti’s cross had gone out of play and with the VARs equipment unable to give a definitive ruling against that, the onfield decision stood. Just like our 3rd goal last Saturday. Oh, wait….
My own stance on this – if the linesman believed the whole of the ball went out of play (and clearly that’s what he did think) then he was right to flag as such. And if there trully wasn’t any camera angle showing that at least part of the ball remained in play then the linesman’s onfield decision must prevail. Yes, last Saturday’s treatment of that principle was completely wrong. But if the match officials in general now apply this law correctly going forward (i.e. starting last night!) then that’ll be welcome by me.
The remaining half hour saw around half a dozen good chances created, most of them involving our substitutes, particularly Forrest and Mheuka. But with none of them created, it made the closing minutes a wee bit nervy before the very welcome final whistle was blown.
It must be very difficult for our manager and coaches to integrate new players and/or try different options when we have a club and fanbase where anything less than a victory is regarded as unacceptable. I can understand why St Johnstone may have been seen on paper as being the easier of the 4 game run that was starting last night. We secured the points and hopefully learned things that will inform the decisions for our next 3 games in 3 different competitions. But I have to say that on countless occasions during the game, different individual players seemed to have no idea what they were meant to be doing – particularly when it came to applying a press against St Johnstone’s back line. If Celtic are going to apply a press, all of the pressing players must surely know what the plan is, and what the trigger to ‘attack’ is. There’s been no evidence of that in recent games. Another week, another rant – I really am turning into an angry old man!
However, we did win. Again!
Celtic have now played 9 games, winning 8 and getting battered in 1. We have scored 22 and conceded 8 (5 were in the 1 game). We sit 5 points clear of Sevco at the top of the league. Hearts are a further point adrift but with a game in hand.
Another really brilliant turnout at the polls, so thank you again for that. For this latest game, 109 provided their nominations. 8 games out of 9 have seen the 100 barrier breached so that’s £24 already to the Glasgow City Mission.
The total votes cast for each player (with my own nominations asterisked) are as follows –
Johnstone*: 53
Donovan*: 51
Murray: 8
Trusty: 0
Scales: 5
McGregor: 3
Baur: 94
Sørensen: 0
Hassan*: 83
Høgh: 6
Tounekti: 8
Nygren: 3
Duran: 0
Forrest: 12
Mheuka: 1
Tierney: 0
Unused subs: Lotomba, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sinisalo, Van den Berg
And so, the POINTS earned by each player for the game against St Johnstone are as follows –
25 – Baur
22 – Hassan
19 – Johnstone
16 – Donovan
14 – Forrest
12 each – Murray and Tounekti
10 – Høgh
9 – Scales
8 each – Nygren and McGregor
6 – Mheuka
4 each – Duran, Sørensen, Tierney, Trusty
1 each – Lotomba, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Sinisalo, Van den Berg
And the CUMULATIVE POINTS after 9 games played are as follows –
155 – Duran
125 – Donovan
114 – McGregor and Nygren
108 – Yang
96 – Baur
89 – Carter-Vickers

Our next test sees us playing at Ibrox in the quarter final of the League Cup. A High Noon kick off on Sunday against Triggers Broom FC with the game being covered by Premier Sports.
Hail Hail!
Collum’s VAR review is on Sky Sports Football at 5.30pm today.
Morning troops.
Of the three games coming up this week two are must wins, the one on Sunday isn’t one of them.
The League Cup holds no great importance to me, other than it helps get a treble, but even beating the Huns won’t guarantee that- as we saw last season.
Nonetheless, I want to see the Huns beaten at every opportunity, but I think Sunday is stacked against us after everything that happened last season- weirdly none of it was Celtic fault. Not the VAR at Motherwell, not the pitch invasion at Ibrox – but we’re carrying the can for it all early doors it appears.
So , given the fan ban and the diminishing attraction of the Glasgow Derby as a result, I’d send out the weakest team possible for this game. Doohan, McCowan, Ralston, etc..
Feck em. We do what we want.
San Luis.
I would love to think I could prioritise this game over that game, but I cant.and I do get it with our fixture pile on,but its 1 of the trophies we can win so let’s do it.lets plan and win them all.
HH
Nabbla
We can prioritise. MON did so on Wednesday with that line up. I’d do the same on Sunday, send the message.
Imagine the meltdown too if we won.
SANLUIS
Agreed. Sunday isn’t so much about progressing to the next round or even beating the huns in their ain midden, it’s about the statement win that tells them to get back in their box. And anyone else with ideas above their station can join them.
No Celtic supporters at Ibrox, what a disgusting decision, as once again its Celtic supporters that carry the can of dissent. It takes two to tango and the Celtic support have been ‘tangoed’ right enough. It, in my opinion it is all designed to appease the downtrodden club in its quest for success.
The Rangers being the downtrodden club. This is the ‘real’ enemy, with its frothing bigoted support.
Was looking back at Willie Maley’s medal, confused because of its design, how would the SFA award such an Irish designed medal to the Scottish champions. “The Maid of Erin” harp, shamrocks symbolising the Irish Nation and its struggle for Independence, this on a Scottish League cup medal for 1892-3. Other Scottish football medals contain Irish symbolisms like the Glasgow Cup.
Presumably at that time there were other Scottish football clubs made up of the Irish diaspora, like Dundee Harp, Hibernian and the many others like Erin FC of Perth, Maryhill Harp etc.
Is that not a total contradiction of how we view the SFA. at that time?
Other episodes reinforce our view of the historical bias against our club, like the 1952 flag episode, but once again a different view appears, like how we railed against Harry Swann the SFA and Hibernian chairman and his decision to tell us to remove the ‘Tricolour’ from the stand and Robert Kelly’s correct stance to fight that decision backed by none other than Rangers FC, it seems that competition overruled bigotry. It turns out that Harry Swann is looked at differently at Hibernian than by us, at Easter Road they regard him as a most forward thinking chairman and certainly not a bigot, why? his first act at being appointed Hibernian chairman was to appoint Mngr. Miley parish priest of Saint Ninians as his club captain, certainly not the act of a bigot.
Its frustrating when opposite views muddy the water of Scottish football bias, especially when they challenge our long formed view of the past. Mind you bigotry is a good friend of the mullah.
It seems that cash will always be king in Scottish football.
We’ll meet much better forward lines this season than the one that we’ll face on Sunday.
My goal would be a clean sheet and work from there. I like trebles so …
HH🍀
St Stivs – Thank you for the picture of the sale of the Liverpool sign. YNWA.
Nabbla thank you.
Bawheid, morning buddy.
Imagine if we had real Celtic supporters in charge of our club, eh? Men that would stand for no crap, and defend the team EVERY SINGLE TIME it’s required!
Instead, we got a bunch of old firm loving money grabbers
HH 🍀
So still not a peep from our board over these decisions. I am shocked I tell you.
Morning BAD,
Still remember the wee man from Croy with affection.
Quite simply he saved our club, also remember John Keane with affection and his million pound deposit into the Bank of Ireland that staved of immediate closure by the Hun – Murray loving wanker Masterton.
Others came into the mix later. If you are asking me am I board lover then no I’m not.
I love Celtic FC pure and simple.
Bawheid,
I’m certainly not asking anything like that , buddy, I just would like guys in charge who will stand up for the team 👍

Mika misses training
BAD
That is not good. Hopefully just a precaution and he’ll be training tomorrow.
I meant to mention in today’s article that none of our opponents so far has resorted to the time honoured strategy of kicking us off the park.
I expect normal service to be resumed, with the tacit approval of Walsh, on Sunday.
Pat Nevin has apologised after the BBC found that he had breached editorial standards with his comments during Celtic’s dramatic title decider against Hearts on the final day of last season.
BBC then state….
“The scenes at the end of the match were chaotic, and Mr Nevin and his co-commentators were trying to give listeners an impression of events as they unfolded, with no opportunity for verification before speaking.
“Mr Nevin subsequently acknowledged that he should not have stated definitively that the Hearts captain had been punched by Celtic fans”
Baws booted…..
So Pat Roland Rat Nevin was telling lies about Shankland being punched. Never heard him mention Shankland approaching the guy who was trying to take a photo though. Obviously should have gone to Specsavers in both cases.
Meantime which one of our strikers will see red on Sunday I ask.
Celtic Fans Collective reviewing the Not Another Penny campaign
We are therefore writing to gauge the views of the wider Collective on whether the campaign should continue or be suspended.
If you are representing a CSC, supporter group, or fan media/online platform, we would ask that you consult those you represent before responding. Where possible, it would be particularly helpful if your feedback could provide an indication of the balance of opinion within your membership – for example, 60% continue/40% suspend – rather than simply providing one response on behalf of the organisation.
We also want to hear directly from independent supporters and would encourage you to provide your own view.
If you could provide your feedback by Friday 18th September, the committee can then consider the views of the wider membership before reaching a decision on the future of the campaign.
Just read a heading there about all the media who piled on to disregard and poo poo celtics achievement of winning the title , instead of commending celtic for being champions again the media used the pitch invasion. Hearts fans being attacked . Still time to go .,we all read them and listened to them . A scandal .
But the people who jumped on are still allowed there press passes , sane with the radio media ,comment from celtic folk about whats being said by the pundits on anti celtic programmes as sportsound ., clyde , talksport .cant understand why any celtic fan would even listen to there tripe .but worse still celtic taking no action against these people .get them banned
So O’Neil saying the had a 15 min talk from Police Scotland, regarding our behaviour, unbelievable. This the place where our players and coaches have been attacked. Our club are a feckin joke.

Pat Nevin’s non-apology is perfectly reflective of the type of wee guy that he is.
We all know a Nevin… the person in work you don’t want to get caught in the lunch room with… the cabbage neighbour you want to punch… the guy who’s wife and kids hate him… ‘A Nevin’.
Today is the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and it provides a stark contrast on relations between Canada and the US, then as compared to now.
Back in 2001, decisions were being made every 90 seconds about US planes that were diverted from US airspace. Thirty-eight of these planes landed in Gander, Newfoundland. Specifically, 7000 passengers were deposited in a town of 10,000 souls. Somehow the town and surrounding communities rallied to not only cater to basic needs but to create lasting friendships. Evidence of this is that many passengers did not want to leave when their planes were scheduled for departure. One group established a student schlorship fund donating $15000 towards it. Today there is more than $1 million available for schlorships and over 200 students have been helped. Prescriptions were filled free of charge by local pharmacies. Food donations pored in and were stored in the local ice rink. One mayor called it “the largest walk in freezer in the world!” Appleton, a nearby community, received $5000 from passengers and used it to establish a Peace Park dedicated to the first responders at the towers. The centre piece consists of twisted steel from the disaster zone. Every year locals hold a memorial service.
Of course, such events have found their way into the Arts. The musical, “Come from Away” recounts some of the feel good ambience created, and will continue to entertain audiences world wide.
The US ambassador is in Gander today. I wonder if he really understands what happened on those days twenty five years ago. Has he any idea of how Canadians responded to the plight of US citizens? Does he know what the real legacy is?
Sorry, today was too important to ignore,

Hi Rebus:
First class post, as per.
2 of my US friends are just back after 2 weeks in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec. I had breakfast with them this morning. They found the high standard of driving and lane discipline, the courtesy on and off the road, the respect for pedestrians, and just the general level of civility and politeness everywhere they went to be a tad hard to comprehend!😊
Needless to say, they were mightily impressed!

Afternoon all,
Rebus67,
Thats an excellent post 👋👋👋👋
Well done the good people of Gander, Newfoundland 💚
If we start with all 3 of Nygren, Hassan and Tounekti at the Bigotdome, we will be inviting disaster. Even James Forrest has very rarely shone there. We need players who will fight for every ball, and I am not certain we have enough of them. Our coaching staff have to find a solution to the cavernous gap in the middle of midfield. We know what to expect- long ball football, swarming after second balls, diving for free kicks, 6’5” twins Kelsey and Fernandes headers at set pieces.
The last 2 seasons, we have occasionally panicked in similar situations, kicking it anywhere, and heading clearances to opposition players at the edge of the box. This season, we have had noticeable Celtic free areas at the edge of our own box, inviting opposition players to have an unrestricted attempt at goal. I will be pretty ticked off if we see that MON and Shaun have not addressed that by Sunday.

The Rat was not trying to give listeners an impression of what was going on as he witnessed events so.
he put put out an entirely false and misleading narrative to suit his purpose!
He should not have lied about Shankland being punched as it clearly did not happen.
He is a liar with an agenda against Celtic,
His apology is nothing more than excuse for being caught.
He should never be allowed into Celtic park again.

I totally agree with you. Anyone can get something wrong, misinterpret events. It’s even fine to get something wrong because you haven’t seen anything to the contrary. But saying that something definitely happened because you saw it yourself when in fact you didn’t?
That’s just lying. And actionable. The very least action I expect is for the club to ban him. After all, he’s a repeat offender.
If we start with a midfield 3 of Calum, Baur and Nygren, on Sunday , I reckon we are in trouble.
I would play Tierney in front of Scales as 4th midfielder/ winger.
He has had more assists than anyone else this season.
ST TAMS
Tierney and Duran have three assists each. Nygren has six.
Bobby@5:01
“That’s just lying. And actionable. The very least action I expect is for the club to ban him. After all, he’s a repeat offender.”
🎯🎯🎯
Bobby, I would still start him there in front of Tounekti or Jamsie.
Just watched the VAR Review Show on Sky.
It must have been recorded before Wednesday night.
It did show the two disallowed goals from Saturday night.
The 1st goal, seems like a different ‘Still’ to the blurred one shown on the night.
The 2nd goal, now, it did look like Shim was offside but, Collum says that VAR was working but they couldn’t draw a line to the defender (Gogic) as he was hidden. Fine, then the on field decision should have stood as they had no right to send the ref to the monitor, it’s against the laws.
Funny how this law wasn’t mentioned.
If this was us VAR would be bust and the goal chalked off.

‘We don’t guess…’
Willie Collum
Sevco Technical Director, Dan Purdy, quits after only 15 months
So Collum thinks VAR using a still where you can only see Gogic’s knee but not Mhueka’s is acceptable for deciding if he was offside, but it’s not acceptable to use a still where the ball is out of shot for less than a second to determine if it went out of play or not, although this wasn’t discussed tonight. Utter nonsense.
Good points

Bawheid ref this.
McCallums volumes and Sweeney and Corr excellent early history books make me ponder often,
Did the “Celtic” with their Irish origins (alike 40 others in Scotland) suffer real bigotory and sectarianism in the early days, that was hostile by the football governers of the day.
Or were they seen as cash-cows with vast supports, breaking records and gate recepits everywhere they go ? Much to the approval of other teams ? Specifically the Glasgow teams , extending to the gllee clubs held with Rangers. No problem with the catholicism then.
Also, our ambitious catholic middle classes particulalry Glass and McLaughlin, being key to setting up the league and adopting professionaism,
From the Celtic star –
John H McLaughlin: Celtic Founding Father, Fallout Bhoy, Rangers Glee Club Pianist & Man Who Brought Professional League Football To Scotland
also , in symolism of the time, Irish harps, Shamrocks, leeks, thistles, are found on public buildings, courts, the royal standards, town seals, regiments and so on and so forth as before the rebellion and the parting of the ways, ALL OF IRELAND was represented in everything, Vicotria being the Quenn of Great Britain and Ireland, and an empire to boot.
The paradox of the times being several founders were Irish nationalist but also comfortable with the
military and establishment. Maley being a royalist being an example.
I wonder also, did the clubs get to desing their own medals to be awarded ?
