Gutless!
Morning, all.
Well, that’s the treble gone for another season. And if we ever play as badly as that again, we can say goodbye to the other two trophies as well. To give you some flavour of how bad we were, it was our worst since the Covid season. Or, to put it another way, Dan Neil was MOTM. I have pointed out a few times that we’ve only played opponents from the bottom seven last season, and yet are still giving away chance after chance. Today’s opponents were not going to let us off with that type of slack play; instead, they went for the throat.
I started to go wrong for us from the minute most of us saw the team sheet. If there’s two players in our squad who we know will not show in a battle, it is Tounekti and Nygren. Sad but true. That left us without a threat from our left, and a two v five in midfield. There’s a big part of the problem right there. It gave them the chance to go three at the back, adding Penrice to their five. Baur and McGregor were up against it, though they didn’t help themselves.
Donovan got booked early again, which made life difficult for him when he was already in bother against their winger. And Johnstone, who has strangely become our first choice keeper, was flapping at every cross ball-though, granted, he did save a couple of times too. In fact, he would have got an assist for the opener if Kelsy had been sharp enough. That was the fourth minute, and he didn’t improve much.
Walsh made his intentions plain from the start by ignoring an assault on Duran. The first ten minutes were all one way, and not ours, before Donovan sprung a long ball to Høgh. Sadly, he tripped (summed up his day, really) and Duran could only scuff the unexpected loose ball. The next ten minutes went the way of those early ones, and it was no surprise when they scored. Nor that it was a free shot from the edge of the area, so often our downfall already this season.
By half time, we were grateful only to be one down. We couldn’t be that bad in the second half, so heads up! Hassan came on for Tounekti with Duran switching sides, and immediately took us fifty yards up the pitch. Seconds later, even Walsh couldn’t ignore the latest foul by Mkanya-though he ignored the ones after that. Vast improvement already!
Until Johnstone flapped at another cross, and put the pressure back on us. When he wasn’t flapping, he just played the ball short to ensure we couldn’t get up the pitch. Worse, nobody seemed capable of telling him to hit it long. Today wasn’t entirely the keeper’s fault, but his display went a long way to explaining why we couldn’t relieve the pressure. And just before the hour, unable to get clear, we conceded again. This time, a cross broke loose to Kelsey about ten yards out. Nobody near him. 2-0.
The tie was done by then, four substitutions weren’t gonna change that. In truth, most of us were at the stage where we just wanted put out of our misery. We kept the scoreline down to three, the third again as a result of prolonged pressure.
A disgraceful performance, but you have to wonder what MON thought that line-up was going to get us against an overloaded Ibrox midfield. I love the guy, he has achieved so much for us, but he got things dreadfully wrong this time. He doesn’t have the luxury of a free week to work on things in training, so he needs to use the time he has to find a shape and a formation that works with the players we have. And maybe have a wee chat with Høgh to find out why he hasn’t been performing as we know he can. I just hope he isn’t pining for the fjords!!!

I may be stupid ( I’m sure I am ) but when I watch Celtic or listen to anything said in the media I never find myself under the illusion that anything helpful, planned or organised is happening behind the scenes. Pretty much everyone on here agrees that the formation is awful. Set pieces look completely ad-hoc. We are mostly baffled by substitutions and often gob smacked by team selections. I’d hate to think what our collective age is on here but we’ve watched a lot of football and no one would have picked Tounetki to start. The problem is that no one at the club seems to be seeing what we are seeing. Why is that? We can’t all be wrong. I have to put myself in the seriously p@ssed off camp regarding the treatment of the likes of Sinisalo. He had done nothing to find himself dropped and if I were him I would be considering my future.
The politics around the club are better discussed by others. I just can’t understand why anyone who has any skin in the game would let us go 18 months without a striker or point blank refuse to agree to buy a defensive midfielder when the need is obvious. Sadly, it just doesn’t make sense.Going away to lie down.

“we’ve watched a lot of football and no one would have picked Tounetki to start.”
Correct. In fact, I don’t know one single Celtic supporter who rates him at all. Yesterday, we watched him saunter along to their corner flag, hoping the ball would go out of play for a corner. It didn’t, and the ball was cleared. He could easily have gathered the ball and whipped it into the box. But naw. A few minutes later, he tried similar near our own corner, hoping for the throw. Again, he lost possession instead, and we were back under pressure.
As far as I’m concerned, he’s welcome on a one way trip to who knows where, providing he takes with him the dunce that recommended him to us. An embarrassment to our colours and a waste of a jersey.

Roma defeated Torino 2-0 tonight. Gineitis played the first half and then was subbed for Daniel Braganza who they signed on loan from Sporting Lisbon on September 1 this year. Strange, why sign a replacement when you do not intend to sell. Something rotten in the State of Torino?

Bobby re Tounekti,
Balikwisha and Tounekti cost circa 10 million for the pair. We spent 11 million on Engels, received 22 on sale. So, the Engels’ profit is swallowed up by the dud winger fiasco. Somebody needs their jotters.

Aye blame it on the players the training the tactics anything but the real reason which is the 21st century business model
are celtic scouting poorly and signing duds? Or are they signing players not suited to their system? Or is Celtic’s poor coaching/lack of system turning decent players into bad ones? I think it is a combination of all three.
Ange had a style of play, and brought in players that fit that style. Im not sure I see the same synchronicity between signing and style of play with other managers, which would impact on how good the players look.

Nothing to do with any of that. The 21st century business model succeeded with a hamstrung Hun. Europe was always a humiliation this century even against lesser funded clubs but this was only a consequence. Now that the Huns are getting their arse back in gear after a generation of humiliation at home you gotta ask yourself this question. Do you still feel lucky punk? ( In the figurative sense of course )
rubbish about cash in hand and share price.

Away back in 2013 I thought Rangers were business rivals who had cheated Celtic in a fraudulent manner.
As a result of understanding what had happened from 2012 as result of Celtic’s responses to Res12 I realised that Rangers were actually business partners.
So are all the other SPFL teams business partners with each other, hence interdependency .
That does not mean giving up supporting Celtic.
Folk can still attend an Opera and enjoy it, but know that in real life folk do not sing to each other when ordering a hamburger.
However just as they can also hear someone singing out of tune in an opera, so too can they spot out of tune football.

MIT,
I agree Ange was probably the last manager to get the type of players that he needed to play his system. My view is his system was flawed….too open and punishable by teams who can score more than you.
Laying that aside, though, the cards fell for him because he made minimal demands on the purse strings. Maeda, Hatate were bargains. Kyogo, at peak, was also a steal at 4.6 million.
The more expensive signings like Jota, CCV were brought in cautiously as loans then converted to permanent. The financials were never stretched.
Rogers was different, he wanted more expensive signings as the rule.
Lennon, Mark 1, left because he did not get the replacements he wanted as his best were sold off.
So, Yes, Ange was the last to get what he wanted but because he drew from a bargain market, he did not challenge the financial plan. Purse strings were not loosened abnormally.
Little changes at Celtic. It is time warped.

A timely reminder of the factors in Ange’s favour that enabled speedy and effective recruitment.
I thought Celtic got lucky there but it only postponed the inevitable when Celtic had to return to the wider and more expensive global market where the same managerial personal knowledge of quality players does not exist.
Mags
I agree that dishonesty is a large problem. But I dont think dishonesty and incompetence are mutually exclusive. Celtic have both in abundance.
