Two games, one name

The problem with having such a learned readership is that almost always some bright spark noticed and articulated the very topic that’s nagging away at you as well as them, and now the lead topic is dated. Still important and worthy though, that’s where I find myself today.

We are not a team, per se.
We are a group of footballers.
We don’t have a style of play, haven’t really had one for 8 months so I can’t say it’s just a normal part of the transition phase.
We, well the majority going by social media, also don’t have faith that the current management setup has the tactical knowhow to halt the slide.

Regular readers will know my mantra, if we bring in quality we will be fine, and I believe they did bring in good quality. Its clearly another to tap into that quality apparently. There’s one surefire way to hurt a player’s progress, don’t play him or play him where he doesn’t belong.
The manager may have fancied a slow transition into the team but that option goes out the window daily.

Our Captain more or less amplified the need for player change with his cryptic message about some playing for themselves. I figure he’s hinting at Benji, Kasper, and probably Shim who is clearly out to make a name for himself.

But wait a minute, the Captain is saying they are out for themselves not Celtic, but on the other hand they are probably our best bet at retaining the title even if they don’t want to stay after that?

In my humble opinion this is just another aspect of being out of touch/left behind, an accusation that is widespread. It’s a very valid accusation when you’re failing to get the best of modern players, and modern tactics. Callum was almost a one team man and he’s obviously Celtic through and through. He’s at the complete opposite end of the likes of Shim who OBVIOUSLY sees us as a stepping stone to his Superstardom which will be live streamed and Instagramed no doubt. People above his paygrade decided employing these players dedicated to the cause or not, and after two major collapses under his watch he hits out at others.
Last year the club better match his ambition.
This year, him overthere is not fully dedicated.
Someone suggested the players aren’t playing for the manager, might it be a case they aren’t playing for the Captain?
That type of attitude all week long is not what we need. I hope my fears of a going nowhere/passing through split are exactly that, just a fear. Those words though,,,,glass houses and all that. Daizen, Benji, Martin, Arne, AJ, KT, Kelechi,,,those were the men who won the season last time out and he would do well to remember that before preaching from his vantage point.

Important games never stop at our club but these next two are different. The manager of Celtic doesn’t survive losing the 1st four big tests.
I didn’t want to watch him be that guy, because he’s not just “that guy”, another manager, just a name.

Martin has 180 minutes of football ahead that shall define not only our season but also his big decision to stay.
I hope he shoves those words down my mouth but the hour is upon us.

My faith rests upon his shoulders again as soo many times before.
Let’s see what happens.

Massive two big games coming up starting tomorrow. How do you get a group of talented individuals to start playing as a team. How do we stop that midfield getting overrun.

I can’t see how hogh and Duran fit into same team, Either it’s hogh with nygren off him but up close and forego the wingers and stiffen up the midfield or else it’s Duran with wingers but no Nygren in midfield.

Amazing that Callum suggests others not playing for team .
Aguy who frequently avoids responsibility and passes ball to teammate under pressure to remain hidden.
He provides no forward momentum putting sideways and backwards passes because they are easy.
A captain who runs around with no purpose /positional sense and cannot tackle.
Just maybe taking their cues from our captain is the real issue?

Can’t agree with your assertion that Hogh and Duran can’t play in same team.
They probably can’t in a team structure laid out by our clueless coaching staff.
Therein lies our problem as none of systems or team structures laid out by the coaches has had any real benefit for team or individual players.
Until there is a professional approach to recruiting modern coaches we will continue with such conversations.
The real issue is Despot and the Lackeys employing coaches who have no real relevance to the modern football environment.

September 16, 2026 9:01 am

We don’t have a naturally right sided midfielder.

We don’t have any midfielders who have upper body strength.

We don’t have any midfielders who are ball winners.

Our only match fit full backs are boys.

Our central striker 7 games 4 starts has played with 5 different wide players.

Tactics, formations and player selections cannot disguise these inadequacies of which there are more of.

September 16, 2026 9:58 am

Hard to argue with that lead Mahe.

The comparisons to the COVID season are there. A Manager who should not have been appointed on a permanent basis, overstaying his initial tenure, a Captain with diminishing influence in dressing room and on the field, a number of signings- who look good on paper – but are not the correct fit for Celtic in a battle, and of course a Board blind to all of the above, or if they are aware, are totally incapable of acting on it.

We shall see what the week brings, but the warning signs since Matchday 1 – (10 games ago)- have been ignored, so I’m not expecting anything great.

Almost every team on the planet would give anything to have a domestic record like ours.
But more than anything, us fans want a team that don’t just have talent, they have the balls for the battle when that talent isn’t allowed to flourish.
This is what this team lacks, a few good MEN.
Been saying it my whole life, Celtic jerseys shouldn’t be for sand-dancers that pull out of tackles!
Desmond and his lackeys know enough to know, if they leave out buying a proper defensive midfielder, they leave us just vulnerable enough to keep things competitive.
How else do you explain leaving numerous managers in the same position??

Never think these rats don’t know what they are doing, they don’t do anything that isn’t pre-planned

For those of the betting persuasion. What are the odds of Kaper H being punted in Jan?
Is Hogh the Scandinavian Idah? Nah imo, Adam was/is undoubtedly the better of the two, and he wasn’t the best either.

Awe Naw BAD
The lack of a football structure throughout the club is deliberate and the main issue.
Despot and The Lackeys throw crumbs at football department while making sure the largest slice of pie goes to them.
The lack of cohesion in football department while making leaves signing with a scattergun approach.
As has been pointed out we have no system or footballing philosophy which is a product of the lack of talent amongst coaches at the club.
Unless the club implements a plan to bring the club into the modern football world we are destined to being a past tense in World football.

Fan,

Completely agree and we lost the opportunity to do that under Brendan. The recruitment team was rightly dismantled along with the football department. The chairman exited and none of those departures has been properly addressed.

Last season when we suffered the ignominy of being papped out of the lucrative CL by Kairat Almaty it shouldn’t be forgotten that Engels was on the bench for both games and contributed little. Johnston was garbage for both games and ended up injured until he could miraculously attend a Canadian training camp where he unfortunately injured himself again. Maeda couldn’t play for falling over his lip and when Yang eventually got on the pitch his lip was getting in the way of Maedas lip.

I have no doubts that they were all pissed off because Brendan put his foot down and prevented any of them from moving.

Come the end of last season MON got a tune out of them. I’m sure they all realised themselves that they wanted to impress for World Cup duty and for the inevitable upcoming lucrative transfer deal.

This is why we won the league last year by two points. Baw hair territory.

The huns net spend over the last two years is £30m

The diets net spend over the last two years is £1m

Our net spend is minus £30m

We are in the EL due to those two points.

We just got gubbed by a team that couldn’t qualify for Europe but have injected £30m worth of talent whereas we’ve ejected £30m worth of talent.

I would conservatively estimate the huns wage bill has increased by 15% while ours has decreased by 20%

So the failed ex Jamboes coach with his two ex Partick Thistle coaches have more armoury this year to take on the more failed ex hibs coach, youth coach and Celtic Legend and spokesperson.

Forget Europe and the cups this season a total side show. The only KPI talked about is the league.

If we don’t win it. I don’t expect anything to change much.

The demise of this Celtic team started a couple of seasons back when every one and their Aunties figured how to beat our 4-3-3 press.

It ended BR, it ended Nancy (not due to 4-3-3 but only because our idiot squad couldn’t cope with new ideas and rebelled against different formats).

If we continue with it , it’ll end MON.

September 16, 2026 12:25 pm

I’m amazed that Callum has the front to criticise other players, when he’s been guilty of hiding for weeks now. When did he last put in a performance that made us say how good he is? His sole input to the game on Sunday was to tell the others “no more goals” when we went 3-0 down. Serious questions need to be asked about why he always plays despite current form, and is he really the inspirational captain the club would like us to believe?

Apparently, MO’N and his team have paid heed to the comments regarding training amounting to just running in and out a loada cones. His new approach is to use one single cone. Therefore he has transported his first team players on a Park’s of Hamilton bus to the toon and scheduled a game of tennis football around the Duke of Wellington statue.
Apparently, DD is delighted with the new set up and has instructed Lord Lucan to find a buyer for the remaining cones that are now surplus to requirement.

l can forgive our players all sorts of shortcomings.
I can overlook you not playing great every game
I also don’t expect you to win every game.
I can forgive not being world class every week

But …

When you are handed one of the most iconic strips in the world, the least I expect is for you to give everything you have, no excuses.
The one thing I can’t forgive, is when I see a Celtic player pulling out of a challenge.
If I was management, Sebastian would be getting told it is simply unacceptable.
After that you’d be jettisoned if it continues.
If you don’t have the heart for the battle, you are simply no use to us.
I so much wanted him to succeed, there’s a player there, but his heart is the size of of a mouse.

This team needs a few good MEN.

Hi San Luis:
Unfortunately, you are spot on. This season is unfolding as many feared on these pages when news emerged that MON would return. The culmination of last season was the perfect end stop to cement his legacy. Staying on without cast iron guarantees of total support from the feckless Despot would simply ensure that legacy would be diminished, by how much we know not.

As FAN, AWENAW and others have alluded to, the structure is unfit for practice. Maloney takes training, MON is either absent or watches from the sidelines, and the practice sessions look ludicrously easy. Even the so called ‘small sided’ games have too many players, meaning players can hide. I have posted on here videos of Liverpool, Bayern and Real Madrid sessions where these games have far smaller numbers, with the Galacticos often doing 1 on 1 sessions in blazing heat. Those on here who have experienced these in their youth with know just how exhausting that is. We obviously are not shown the totality of Celtic sessions, but the second halves in Linz and the Bigotdome exposed how unfit we are.

I think the players are getting mixed messages from MON and Maloney. The tired 4-3-3 system collapses under a high press. We end up passing it back to the keeper, then compounding the pressure by trying to pass it out when we have 5 or 6 players in the box being harassed into smaller and smaller areas. McKlopp easily worked out that our players would try to extricate themselves by playing a short diagonal pass, and had 5 or 6 players strung across the field anticipating and intercepting these. It was ridiculously easy. We can expect more of the same on Sunday, plus ramped up second half pressure to take advantage of our lack of legs and increasing fan impatience. John Beaton in the middle won’t exactly help that.

The shirt is looking too large for a lot of the players, and as Jock said, “It doesn’t shrink for inferior players”. Tounekti could practically go walkabout inside his. He should be nowhere near the team. We have to come up with something that catches McKlopp by surprise. We will certainly need a minimum of 4 in the middle, perhaps with Berg and Sorensen in the middle, with Berg just in front of our shaky centerbacks. No really good options in midfield, so we have to make the best of what we have.

I would also be tempted to play both Duran and Mheuka up front through the middle, with Hassan on the right, using long balls to get the defence turning, and having the Hun midfield a lot more concerned with defending their goal rather than pressing ours. Keep the back door firmly closed and hit them repeatedly on the break.

Do I expect any of this to happen? Not really.😱

Do you think the big 5 and Portugal/Dutch teams take the Europa and Conference league phases seriously beyond just getting enough points to qualify ?

Then in the knoclout stages , taking home league qualification places for champions league more seriously than competing in these ?

If we had won on Sunday I don’t think the sevco manager could have survived. Knocked out of 3 cups before the middle of September and 5 points behind in the league. A huge opportunity missed to strangle sevco right at the start of the season.
If we don’t win our next 2 games it will be difficult for Martin to survive. How quickly things change in football.
Sevco have scored 7 goals in 6 league games this season and then took 3 off us in 1 game. It was a calamitous performance and result. What is scary is that it could have and should have been a heavier defeat.
We were bullied on the park and intimidated by the atmosphere off the park. We desperately need to bring in players who are much stronger mentally and physically.

Hi SAINT:
You ask some tough questions!😊
I think each team’s circumstances will be different, but here’s my 2 cents.
The first clue will be in the Squad registered for the tournament. Is it the strongest squad the team can name? The second clue will be past history. And the third will be each manager’s judgment on opposition strength, the difficulty of the next domestic fixture, rotating the squad to prevent exhaustion, and introducing youngsters.

A parallel would be Iraola last night. He wanted to see how some youngsters would perform against an EPL team in a lesser competition, the Carabao Cup, but still wanted to win the game. He calculated that even with 4 of them all playing at one time, they would still be strong enough to overcome Spurs. He was correct, he educated himself about his young player abilities under pressure, and had the benefit of resting players like Virgil. It could have blown up on him, as Spurs missed some great chances, but his gamble paid off.

I expect that teams like Brighton, Freiburg, Atalanta and Monaco will adopt similar a similar policy in the Conference League. Palace, for example, have a history of doing so, sometimes making 10 or 11 changes when the opposition is weak, and they have a tough EPL game 3 days later. They are now in the Europa, so I think they will be less radical.

I also expect Milan, Benfica, Bayer, Juventus, Bournemouth and a few others to do the same in the Europa, where the general standard is higher. If progression is guaranteed, they will experiment. I haven’t researched it, but I suspect the answer to your last question is that teams would prioritize qualification for the Champions League over a European tie, unless they were damned sure they would win the Europa, which I think would be too much of a gamble.

Right, here we go again, once more then I give up.
Our press was beaten because the players, for whatever reason, couldn’t stand the heat.
First leg v LASK we repeatedly broke the press and played out… 60,000 and the CL theme tune in their ears… trust the system…play, it worked.
Then it did t because the players didn’t.

Repeated calls for a ‘dm’… no !
The TEAM is the dm and it stems from our press, not an individual who will miraculously
stay back, in a three, and repel breaks or win the ball back in 50/50’s.( or less)
The next game you watch ( apart from the industrial strength hoofing and channels game of the SPL ) count how many times a dm would be in a position to win a tackle… not foul, but win a tackle.
It doesn’t work like that anymore… not one player, all players.

John Hughes, when at Falkirk, once said before a game “It’s eleven square go’s, win yours”
On Sunday we never won any, it’s not the system but the players in it.

Saint Stivs

Without a doubt the Spanish teams take European comps seriously. Barcelona are going for the CL , for certain. Real Madrid see it as a birthright. At Madrid, pine for it.

Both Celta Vigo and Real Sociedad will feel confident in the El. This is our level.

However, the new formats allow these teams to rest players in the opening phases and Vigo and Sociedad would consider a 0-0 as not a bad result as they know they probably win 4 of the 8 ties and qualify regardless with anywhere between 13 and 16 points.

Celta Vigos next 5 games look easy for them compared ours.

Tomorrow night Celtic have to win as it’s hard to see points coming in Lisbon or v Marseille for example. 10 points is a reasonable target, but probably not enough.
