No Excuses
Morning, all.
Tell you what, I hate doing match reviews after a performance like yesterday. Especially when we could all see it coming, and had done for a while. We’ve spent bloody ages on here moaning about how weak our midfield is, so the manager beefs it up with bodies. Problem is, a couple of those bodies should be nowhere near a Celtic jersey. But there they were, and here we are.
We started off a lot stronger and more aggressive than last week, forcing a few early (useless) corners and a booking for Fernandez and McInnes. But normal service was resumed, with Beaton ignoring anything in blue-including a clear second yellow when Fernandez hauled down Nygren who would have been through on goal, and a handball thankfully picked up by VAR for a second away goal. Plus all of his usual antics, including waving play on when Sterling kicked the ball straight at Duran’s head as he lay on the ground after a tackle. Walsh on VAR wasn’t going to pick that up, as he’d ignored one similar last week.
But once again, the lack of balance in the team was glaring. We were nominally three at the back, with Donovan and Tierney joining the middle men. Problem is, Donovan had no cover in front of him and CCV doesn’t have the pace to deal with a speedy winger, so the five in midfield plan was strangled at conception.
And let’s be brutally honest, the only midfielder who could hold his head high after that game was Baur. The rest stunk the place out. McGregor passed more often to blue jerseys than hooped ones, and McCowan held onto the ball just long enough to lose every challenge he faced. Tierney tried manfully down the left, and even crashed one off the bar early on, but faded badly as the game progressed. Here’s a wee Top Tip for you, Kieran. If you can’t last ninety minutes for your club, you shouldn’t be accepting international call ups. The three weeks ahead of us could be spent much more fruitfully working out a fitness regime to get you that wee bit closer to what you were. Not on a jolly jamboree abroad wi yer pals.
Anyway, the goal when it came was all too familiar. We hit the bar, they break. Ball breaks loose in the D to an unmarked player who rattles it. This time, Sinisalo saved it but they score the rebound. And it all came about because Beaton ignored a clear Kelsy handball, and we couldn’t clear our lines. Cue the sly smirk.
The interval brought Høgh on for McCowan, but it also meant Duran being stuck on the wing. And speaking of wingers,we ended up with THREE of them on the pitch. Can’t get too much of a good thing, huh? We actually gave it a good go in the last ten or fifteen minutes, but by then we were kidding ourselves on. We could have played all day and not scored. Fuxake, we could have stayed on the pitch at half time and still not scored. Might as well have done too for all the good the legendary pep talk did.
It’s been an awful week, three games that we’ve never once looked like winning. We have a mixture of good, bad and indifferent players. Some who simply are not good enough, some who just need a rub of the green, one or two whose future is well behind them. That’s not a squad that is anywhere near good enough for ANY European competition, and is struggling to cope with the domestic stuff. We are miles short of where we were only a couple of years ago, and more like a clapped out old Lada than a Honda Civic. Dreams of watching a Ferrari purr along at Celtic Park are about as likely to happen as one being parked in my driveway.
Our moustachioed heid honcho managed to shift the blame for all of last year’s problems onto our manager at the time, whose only crime was to publicly point out the paucity of quality in the squad. The usual suspects queued up to put the boot in as well, and I wonder what they are all thinking at the moment. BR complained that he was being obstructed in his efforts to improve the squad. MON has made similar, though less spectacular, claims. We have lost three games in eight days, and to sides which should never have been able to lay a glove on us. And wouldn’t, if the Plc was the least bit interested in the alleged core business of the club. We face an uphill struggle in Europe with a squad which is chronically short of quality, and are now only two points clear of the Ibrox mob.
Not because they are a good team. They aren’t. But because we have been systematically shorn of quality right across the board. And speaking of boards, it is our board who are responsible for the squad being short, but O’Neill has to take responsibility for the players he put on the pitch. As for the players themselves, they should be forced to watch the last three games a la Clockwork Orange until the very thought of performing that badly again has them screaming for mercy.
An international break has never been so welcome, words I thought I’d never say.

Stats as given on BBC match report
Article very sad, but true.
Here’s my theory. Roy Keane (and friend) are coming in as assistant coaches to MON. Maloney (who has no loyalty to Celtic having previously left the club 3 times) was in a wage dispute (again) before the season started. Goodbye Shaun and one other. If nothing else Keano brings passion. Mere conjecture, no knowledge.
Keano brings immediate focus and impact, then that’s about it. Id probably place Martin in the same bracket if talking modern football.
In fairness we could really do with a kick up the ass and Roberto always struck me as a bit rocky. At least Keano backed his ego up. Best midfielder Ive ever seen and even my dad was an admirer.
Hail Hail
Chat tomorrow
Good, but sobering lead BM. It’s true, we’ve all said this was coming, myself believing it would be last season , but a miracle happened. But miracles are rare things and that’s ours used up for now.
As for Keane, not my choice, neither is MON staying on remotely an option. However, doing nothing is not an option, so Hobson’s choice it may well be.
We created this mess over a number of years and we’ll get ourselves out of it…. It may just take a while longer than most wish.
Revolution v evolution? Wonder which one we’ll settle for?
I personally wouldn’t have Roy Keane anywhere near Celtic Park, he hasn’t managed for years and even then wasn’t very good and if people say he’ll frighten shit out of players I’m not quite sure that’s a good management style
Some good analysis of our issues in yesterday’s game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCjYznL3DJM
For the masochists out there, there’s also a video analysing last week’s cup game (unsure if already posted in wake of that defeat): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW7TkgD9a6Q
An abject lack of structure and coaching, combined with dwindling fitness and confidence issues across the team.
JLTTB
Our midfield haven’t won a second ball in years.
Poor spacing more to blame than ability to tackle though terrible at both.
Lack of structure and spacing are glaring.
Distance between forwards, midfield and attack are a guess.
We do not have coaches capable of implementing any system properly.
Coupled with a captain dictating tempo and direction who can’t play his own position properly !
Fitness, injury, coaching, sports science is are issue’s that’s plagued us for years and that points clearly at directors being unwilling to to spend on football departments.
The entire coaching compliment from youth up need replacing.
Questions should be asked about signing KT when he no longer is fit. For modern game.
An expensive signing aimed at fan appeasement.
The directors have failed in duty of care to the football club, players and fans.
Fairly states how desperately poor we have become on the field.
Leaving aside the structural mess creating the recruitment shambles, what we have is a team ridden with mediocrity.
Sinisalo is culpable in that soft goal giveaway too.
He seemed to push it straight back out when it should have been parried strongly to the left away from danger.
A defence and midfield any team can play through, even an average Huns one.
A decent centre half would make a difference in there- we don’t have one out of the four options available.
The midfield is a chaotic pick n mix – but one ingredient has to play. And can never be substituted, as he should have been yesterday along with the hapless McCowan.
We don’t seem to know what to do with Nygren Duran Hogh Hassan Forrest Mheuka( He Shoukd be asking Chelsea to send him somewhere decent where he’ll get game time. Tounetki on the pitch before him!
Forget Benfica Celta Vigo etc October is a huge month domestically.
Looks likely that we will be stuck with clueless, gormless Maloney and co. MoN looks consistenly befuddled on the sidelines. The Corporal Jones and Pike of football management.
We are unfortunately stuck with a poor squad lacking quality and depth but do we really stick with this not fit for purpose coaching team? God help us.
Bobby
You’re absolutely right in saying that the International Break has come at a great time.
It gives our “owner” time to reflect and act. MON is surely going to step down in the next few days?
At least we’re controlled by a double billionaire who has all the high tech at his disposal to help him come up with the best solution. I’m reassured by the thought that right now he’s thumbing through his battered old Filofax looking for the surname Keane at which time he’ll flip a coin to decide if he’s phoning Robbie or Roy first.
Hopefully though he’ll remember that Roy walked out of the Ireland World Cup squad due to his unwillingness to accept poor standards of preparation. I wonder what he’d make of Lennoxtown currently?
🤔
Wasnt just team who had a bad performance yesterday.mines wasnt great either.
apologies for swearing and poor posts.

Drew, we’re all adults, we’ve all been there. As far as I recall it was aimed at no one in particular, except the Huns.
All good .

Agree with a lot of what you say.
On the unwillingness to spend re sports science etc. I think that is the effect, not the cause. At a fundamental level, I think our directors (particularly when PL was running the show) believe that they are the most important figures at the Club and do not want to be challenged regarding their way of thinking or competencies (or lack thereof).
If you hire ambitious, competent subordinates, there is a chance that they show you up your lack of competence/value for money to the institution, highlight your archaic and underperforming methods and raise a host of uncomfortable questions.
If your goal is to act in service of your own interests, you make sure everyone below you is not particularly competent in their role / just grateful to be there (NL x2, Ronny, McManus as youth coach etc). I think this is why our recruitment, sports science, match day experience etc are all completely amateur.
Re KT and his fitness issues – KT was extremely valuable last year. He played plenty of minutes and made significant contributions both defensively and with goals and assists.
It’s no surprise that the further this team strays from the coaching and standards set by BR, the poorer we look both in terms of tactics and basic professionalism. I think there’s life still in KT, but like all others in the team just now, they are being done a disservice by the amateur standards being set on the training pitch and behind the scenes.
It must be stated, loudly and clearly, that the views of the support are many and varied. Buying a season ticket does not make you implicit in the implied wrongs of the Executive and still gives you the right to be unhappy with how the Club is managed.
Deciding not to buy a season ticket is a choice that cannot be criticised either.
The choices of either side are made for a multitude of reasons, none of them wrong. The negativity and implied culpability towards Season Ticket holders on here is tedious. No-one will convince me to give up my right to enjoy going to see Celtic. I won’t be changing my habits of 40-odd years to satisfy someone else’s moans and groans and I’ll continue to enjoy the same seat since ’95 beside my boy who joined me 13 years ago. And I’ll still enjoy the fitba that I can and still moan about the serious failings of the Club that have ALWAYS been there but somehow seem to be deemed worse than ever.
MCCAFF
I can’t speak for MAHE, but I can guarantee that I won’t be demanding that fans give up their season ticket, no matter how “altruistic” the gesture. It would be hypocritical of me, as I would have one myself if I still lived in Kilwinning.
Not A Penny More, however, I am completely in favour of that.

Pre kick off at the Waldstadion on Saturday.

A lot like Celtic. Concede immediately after scoring and half time
Bobby…I understand yours and Mahe’s position. I’m referring to Mags and Star and their ilk who demonise the fans who pay their money and go.
@McCaff – September 21, 2026 11:14 am
Agree with this sentiment.
The Board leverage the fans’ emotional attachment to the Club to take advantage of them. They know that Celtic is a large part of many fans’ lives, that the affinity with the Club spans across generations and that many will be unwilling to give up their STs due to the sentimental value / the routine of seeing family and friends every couple of weeks to take in the football.
In no other walk of life would the party who is being taken advantage of be painted as culpable in such a situation. This is 100% on the Board.
McCaff
I’m 100% behind you in season ticket renewals, my Bhoy sits in my seat and it’s been in my family since we moved back in to Paradise in 1995.
The team will come good, not this one, although if we change manager, coaches, formation and drop certain players for our good and theirs with immediate effect, then it could.
Until then, we’ve experienced worse and it’s just a case of taking our medicine should everything for t1ts up for a few seasons.
DREW67 935
My language during and after the match wasn’t the best either. I reckon we’re excused, given the circumstances. In fact, we should be congratulated for our politeness!
How much have we spent in compensation for;
Brendan Rodgers and his staff
Columbus Crew
Wilfried Nancy and his staff
Paul Tisdale
And in recruiting
Shaun Maloney
Mark Fotheringham
Martin O Neill
The £9m we got from Leicester must be well used up by now 😉
If its Lennon, there will be a season ticket for sale
Let’s not forget Beaton and Walsh cheated, for Fernandez 2nd yellow, and it could be argued his booking was similar to Trusty red card at Swinecastle, different game if that happens
BADABING
I vote for “None Of The Above”
BADABING
Beaton was at it all game. I didn’t ignore that in my article.
Bada and Bobby… the lack of VAR interventions at the game yesterday, notably with Last Man/DOGSO Fernandez on Duran so early in the game proved the fix was in but also enabled the officials to escape scrutiny on the VAR Review show. This workaround has to be dealt with but probably won’t be. As has been noted time and again on here, the time to complain is when you’re winning not when it’s too easy to be accused of sour grapes!
I have been a Celtic TV subscriber forever. Cancelled it today (although in truth my new streaming site gets all games!). For the first time ever I’m glad it’s an international break.
Sorry McCaff.
You’re right.
I apologise.
If no-one buys a Mars Bar when they’re at the game then that’ll show Dermot Desmond we really mean business.
With regards to SFA officials. I think it’s an almost certain case that we’re being punished for a correct VAR decision in May.
Part of it is down to the media campaign by Huns,Hearts and neutrals over the “injustice” of it all, the other part is down to their unconscious/ conscious bias that routinely happens in Celtic games.
A good Celtic team would ride out the storm, led by a determined Captain and lieutenants. This one won’t.
If it’s Lennon, mine will be getting locked in a drawer until he’s sacked
Celtic will never get honesty from Scottish officials.
Media are facilitating the cheating as it’s the countries want.
Haven’t seen any MSSM mention of controversial incidents yesterday?
But the club could fight back on own terms.
Rig Celtic park with technology.
Overhead cameras strategically placed to cover entire fields and sidelines
Cameras also alongside pitch as well.
Can claim use for team tactical improvement.
Allow them plenty of leeway and when evidence is found over prolonged period go to CAS.
If it’s Lennon they should just turn out the lights!
MON, shouldn’t be taking a few days to consider his future.
It should be taken out if his hands.
The coaching staff and him should be away today. That gives us 3 weeks to try and start sorting out this mess.
BMCUWP
a question ,,, not a dig. I hope you will take my question the way it is intended, but since you mentioned it this morning, I am addressing it to you, and I didnt want you to feel I am criticizing you in particular. But hoping you can explain. Or anyone else who wants to jump in, of course.
do people think ‘Not a Penny More’ (NAPM) has been effective? Some significant purchases this window, for sure, but as this week has shown, the same significant underlying problems remain.
What is the goal of NAPM? IfNAPM is seen as a success, how so? If not, is it expected to be a success in, say 6 months? If not, why continue?
more broadly, why support a (seemingly ineffective) partial boycott but not a ST one? To put my cards on the table (I think I have already…but I’ll repeat them here), I believe only a ST boycott will force real change. But I also don’t think that will happen.
this may be better asked of Mahe as I seem to recall he thought it would pay dividends (If you will pardon the pun), but I havent looked back, and am just going off my memory of what Mahe posted
Mike In Toronto
No, it’s a waste of time.
It’s a performative half-measure.
In fact, it’s so ill conceived it could have been proposed by the Celtic board.
FAN 1257
That is a plan worth pursuing. We certainly can’t trust the MSM. Even Sky, which usually thrives on controversy, refused to show the Fernandez incidents (plural) during its coverage. And they’ve been similarly disinclined to discuss previous controversial incidents in our matches this season.
MIKEINTORONTO
The annual results are out shortly. I expect them to show a significant reduction in merchandising. Additionally, the stadium was only about 3/4 full on Thursday night.
TSATC
In the same way that you should never throw a party where nobody turns up, you don’t call a boycott that’s going to be ignored.
This perpetual gnashing and grinding of teeth and spitting of feathers isn’t good for you all.
The 2025/26 accounts will be released pretty soon possibly tonight and will give us all a proper boost and soothe fraying tempers. I can hear the clink of champagne glasses in the imminent future.
This should give us the first proper picture of:
2025/26 Champions League/Europa League revenue
The impact of the £77.3m opening cash position
Player trading and actual accounting profit on player disposals
Player acquisition costs and amortisation
Wage expenditure including compensation fees.
The effect of the 2025 summer and January transfer activity
30 June 2026 cash, which is particularly important because the big summer 2026 transfer spending happened after the accounting year end.
Who cares if we can’t play football and we’re not very good.
Star…sarcasm and pedantry are as tiresome and unnecessary as the constant lectures telling us we’re at fault for buying season tickets. Here’s the thing – for me and probably thousands of others – I enjoy going to the fitba, yes I actually enjoy it! What’s so bad about that? I’ve enjoyed going for years; first with mates, then season tickets with my bro, my cousin and his bro-in-law. and then on my own for a couple of years as we had kids and I wasn’t out bevvying so much. Then I started taking my boy, and a few years later my nephew got a season ticket so we travel together, go for beers together and sometimes there’s 15 or 20 of us in the pub after the game. You think I should give that up for the Celtic sideshow? You are the one that’s deluded if you think WE are to blame for Celtic’s shortcomings. We know what we’ve got, we know what we’ve bought into but maybe I should sit in the hoose and type all my frustrations away during the games and criticise the guys who want to go and enjoy what they’ve got.
You’d do better to keep the snidey Mars bar comments out of your argument, you’re better than that!
I don’t think anyone on here is criticising folk who continue to buy a season ticket, just stating that it’s the only way this board will sit up and pay attention.
It’s a bit like telling your best pal that his wife continually does the dirty on him even though he worships the ground she stands on.
It’s some dilemma right enough 🤔

In much the same way if you keep doing the same things you’ll get the same results.
For example, keep handing your cash over to Dermot Desmond and he’ll keep fucking you over.
Bluegrass…if you don’t think we’ve been criticised you’ve not been paying attention!
McCaff
Good for you.
I hope you enjoyed your Old Firm day out.
Despot and Lackeys know the fans are divided over course of action to their running of club.
We know the PLC and profit is their only priority.
Looks like change will only be affected when continual downsizing reduces the football club to irrelevance.
They will then pay lip service and invest.
Despot Desmond is a catastrophe for the football club.
