Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves

The release of our annual accounts were very timely. They dropped as this blogs posters were debating Not Another Penny Campaign, the Collective had also done likewise, and of course they came just as we also experience a genuine and very alarming downturn on the field of play.

It’s worth mentioning those numbers would have been known in late July/early August.
What’s the point?
There’s several points when thats taken into account.

Faced with a significant drop and with about a month of the transfer window our executives were faced with major decisions namely what do we do?
Stabilize and slowly grow back then surpass the previous highpoint,,,
Curtail spending or spend very little,,,
Flex the financial muscle and jointly entice more supporter revenue, TV revenue, while stocking up on future player sales income via recruitment?
I insist most CEO”s in football would opt for the third option especially given the amount in the bank. We opted for the second and thats where the domino’s fall into place.

I thought we had bought well upto LASK, but like everyone felt it faded out after that even though some might turn out to be good footballers. That result, the accounts, and opting for that second option above essentially holed our campaign under the hull.
Martin is the man left holding the can, we also suffer to an extent, but he was hit with that double whammy in the space of a couple of weeks, bad accounts mean much less to spend unless he hits, the CL,,,then he doesn’t and realizes thats about it.
I often thought, and its been commented on, that it was almost as if a switch was flicked and our flame was extinguished. I now believe that double whammy floored football operations entirely.

It explains a lot of our transfer activity, like watching Sigur and Mahmic go to lesser alternatives. Like the board not being as keen on Genetis as the manager, per reports from Italy. Option 2, curtail spending and instead of about 15m to reinforce the midfield with three good players, we spent 4 on one and took two for free.

Option B, curtailing spend if the figures slide, more or less insures another Option B next season. The accounts aren’t going to suddenly leap in July’27, and now the heart has gone TV and prize income will decrease, as will player value, as will supporter income.
Option B just cost the bank balance 11 million smackeroonies.
You know this by now, but here’s my point, they cannot keep spending the bank account, which would be the result of Option B annually,,,faced with the backdrop of having to spend the bank account to not even stay still but get left behind, Option B must be abandoned.

Nobody especially Dermot would be silly enough to just save 77m and watch it dissappear, that would be unprecedented in football. 5 seasons of Option B would eat that cash in the bank, then who is paying the debt because Dermot won’t.
Besides all this would collapse the shareprice and the shareholders wouldnt allow that. As would Dermot doubling down and just reducing the quality slowly until we are the equivalent of a Sheffield Wednesday playing infront of 15k in League Two at 50k Hillsborough. Again, the money men just won’t watch their spoils dissappear.

Yup Option B must and shall be binned. The alternative is to avoid even facing Option B in the first place and coincidentally not long before the accounts were due a man who would known what they contained typed out an email asking to meet the Collective.
Brian Wilson would not have made that decision solo, he been ordered to and we all know who gave that order.

I find this very telling. Last season “we” were scum on the verge of knifing someone, apparently we are responsible for nobody joining the board (as if some well intentioned foreigner would care), now “we” are “invited” back onside as soon as they gulp at the figures and surely realize that Elite Level Adidas bonus will soon put a further dent in the coffers. This meeting (and I await the summary) was aimed not at unity but at finance returning, in my humble opinion.
What they offered as a carrot I’m dying to find out but apparently the world class club with a successful strategy have cottoned onto the terrible fact that they need us.
I hope they quickly realize we neither need nor want them.

Prestonpans bhoy,

That is most definitely Desmond’s name among my family and friends.

Anyone who was totally aware of the level of cheating that the Huns done to us & others – yet still felt it was a good idea to tell those that were cheated how fantastic the cheaters were, can’t be anything other than a rat, can they?

They certainly shouldn’t be trusted!

There are lots of them around our club now, Desmond is just chief rat.

I would love to see the whole support show our true feelings about him every single time we play a game, in the hope they just scurried away.

That’s if others are starting to feel how I’ve felt for years, that they are not just unwelcome, they are absolutely detested.

No real Celtic fan would EVER have said the things he said.

Put simply, there’s just no coming back from that

What’s next?

More of the same.

Falling behind in the league looks likely as things stand.
No worries, second place guarantees ECL participation.
If we can’t win the SC our Board will be hoping our business partners do a double/ treble to let us into the EL by the back door. Much like we helped them last season.

I’m sure that’s something they’ll heartily celebrate as an Old Firm success.

Good article, mate. The board, DD especially, are responsible for our current woes, and it is important that they be prevented from placing it elsewhere. Be that the manager (past or present) or the fans. Or even a big boy who ran away.

They broke it. They own it.

September 24, 2026 11:32 am

Leggy,

Your assumption is correct but no Scottish team will enter directly into the league phase of any European competition they will all have to play qualifiers.

That could change by the 2031/2032 season but we would collectively all have to massively improve our performances in Europe in the meantime.

Huns & Hibs & Well failure to qualify for Europe and our and diets failure to qualify for CL this season hasn’t helped at all.

Direct access to the league phase of European competition most of us may never see again.

CHAIRMAN’S STATEMENT

Season 2025/26 was more turbulent than anyone would have wished for, though ultimately it ended with one of the most dramatic title wins in our history as we secured the SPFL Premiership in the final moments of play before adding the Scottish Cup to complete a double a week later. I congratulate Martin O’Neill, the backroom team and players for demonstrating extraordinary resilience throughout the title run-in and thank our supporters whose backing was crucial to the outcome.

Turning to a summary of our financial results, revenue decreased to £111.0m (2025: £143.6m) primarily as a result of dropping into the Europa League as compared to the Champions League in the prior year. As well as directly impacting UEFA distributions, this also had a knock-on effect on other parts of the Club including ticketing income and retail. The loss after tax amounted to £4.8m (2025: profit of £33.9m). This was driven by a combination of revenue decline, an increase in operating expenses primarily through wages and salaries, a reduction in gains from player trading to £16.0m (2025: £31.5m) and an increase in amortisation to £15.4m from £13.8m in 2025.

Year-end cash decreased by £10.9m to £66.4m (2025: £77.3m) mainly due to cash consumption at the operating level coupled with net investment in players and capital items in the year. Committed player acquisition costs, including all agent fees, amounted to £17.5m in the year on top of the £42.6m spent in the prior year. The reduction in spend was in part down to a strategic decision in the January 2026 transfer window to adopt more loan signings with permanent transfer options in order to combine flexibility with the immediate strengthening of the playing squad.

Going into the summer 2026 transfer window post year-end, the Club has brought in the permanent registrations of Kasper Høgh, Camilo Duran, Mika Baur, Haïssem Hassan, Joël van den Berg and Jordan Lotomba at a total cost of £31.6m as well as acquiring the temporary registrations of Landon Emenalo, Shumaira Mheuka, Sam Johnstone and Oliver Sørensen. Prior to the year-end we permanently disposed of Luis Palma and Hayato Inamura and post year-end permanently disposed of Maik Nawrocki, Daizen Maeda, Arne Engels, Reo Hatate and Johnny Kenny. A number of players’ loans and playing contracts came to an end and they have moved on to new clubs or returned to their parent clubs.

The early stages of the 2026/27 season have brought mixed fortunes. Our league campaign started strongly and the first leg tie in the Champions League qualifier gave cause for optimism. The second leg defeat to LASK was, accordingly, all the more deeply disappointing for every supporter of the Club. This has been followed by our exit from the League Cup. We now move into the Europa League as well as pursuing our defence of the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup, with renewed commitment to success.

The events of the past 12 months have been dramatic, sometimes joyful and at other points deeply frustrating. The departure of Brendan Rodgers was an unanticipated event which initiated a period of instability. In other circumstances, the appointment of Wilfried Nancy might have worked but his arrival in mid-season and the changes which followed clearly did not. Parting ways with Wilfried was hugely disappointing but decisive action had to be taken. The return of the great Martin O’Neill, supported by his backroom team as well as a fine squad of players, then proved to be a triumphant success. It is also worth noting that eight of our players were selected by their countries for the World Cup finals.

We welcomed Grant Scott as women’s team manager in January 2026 and while we were disappointed to finish the SWPL in 5th place after Grant transitioned into the role, we rounded off the season in style by winning the Scottish Cup. The season has started strongly with 5 straight league wins and progression into the quarter finals of the Sky Sports Cup.

In December, Peter Lawwell retired from the chairman’s role.  Peter’s contribution to the Club’s success over more than 20 years was outstanding and, as Celtic supporters, we owe him our appreciation.

I was asked by colleagues to step into the role of Interim Chairman and have done my best to bring people together in order to maximise the team’s prospects of success and to encourage improvement in areas where we could have been doing better including communication and supporter engagement. This work is ongoing. Tom Allison retired from the Board after long and sterling service for which we all express appreciation. The need for new Board appointments was apparent, and I welcome the immediate appointment of Mark Keane and soon to be appointed Raymond Buchanan. This process of refreshing the Board will continue including identification of a successor to myself.

We have many fine people working for Celtic Football Club, each and every one committed to its identity, values and continuing success. I thank them all for their contributions in every aspect of the Club’s affairs. Our appreciation also goes, as ever, to the supporters who always were and always will be the lifeblood of the Club.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S REVIEW

We were delighted to end season 2025/26 on a high, winning the Scottish Premiership on the final day of the season and adding the Scottish Cup and Women’s Scottish Cup in the weeks following, but last season was a challenging one for the Club, both on and off the pitch. Following a period of stability, which has borne fruit in terms of success and growth over recent years, we experienced turmoil which affected the Club’s performance. We will address and learn from the challenges faced and mistakes made.

The final weeks of the Premiership season; the final match at Celtic Park; the Scottish Cup final; these will live long in the memory for Celtic fans, whose support was a decisive factor. I thank Callum McGregor and all of the players and staff for their hard work and determination throughout the season that made the success possible. As the Chairman has noted, the environment was unstable, following Brendan Rodgers’ resignation and our decision to move on from Wilfried Nancy. We owe a debt of gratitude to Martin O’Neill and his management team, who stepped up for Celtic, twice, and who guided the team to success.

We were therefore delighted that Martin agreed to lead the Club again this season and we have worked with Martin and his team over the summer transfer window to invest in the squad. Having started well in the Premiership this season, we experienced disappointment in the UEFA Champions League play-off. Reaching the league phase of the Champions League is an objective for us all, and we are sorry not to have achieved it. On top of that, the losses in the last week have been painful for us all. We will now come together and support Martin and the players, as we focus our efforts on achieving success domestically and in the Europa League.

Last season also brought change for Celtic FC Women. After a successful period in charge, during which we won our first SWPL title, Elena Sadiku moved on with our best wishes as we appointed Grant Scott as manager in January 2026. I congratulate Grant and Stewart McGuire, our Women’s Team Operations Manager, our captain Kelly Clark and all of the players and staff on our Scottish Cup victory. We are ambitious not only for the development of Celtic FC Women this season, but also for the women’s game as a whole in Scotland.

Alongside football success for the first teams, we remain committed to our strategic objective of creating Champions League players, in our men’s and women’s programmes. During the year we have continued to invest in the development of our training facilities at Barrowfield and Lennoxtown, as well as evolving and improving our recruitment and technical functions, which develop the talent in our boys and girls academies as well as players recruited from Scotland and beyond. We will also continue to work with the Scottish and European football authorities to develop opportunities for growth in youth development and innovation in competition that will allow our talented players to maximise their potential.

Despite the challenges experienced during the season, thanks to the dedication and assistance of our supporters, colleagues and partners we continued to make progress off the pitch. We appreciate the support of adidas, JD Sports, Dafabet and all of our partners as we look to grow our Club.  As we saw at the end of the season, we are at our strongest together. Following our comprehensive supporter survey, and through listening to supporter feedback through the season, we have made progress with our supporter engagement and digital strategies.  We are investing in our approach to supporter engagement with additional resource and new and refreshed structures (including our supporter engagement group, Celtic Connect) along with making improvements in matchday experience. On the digital front we have launched our Club App and Celtic Player and are progressing our plans on membership. We trust that these investments together with additional communication resource will hopefully continue to bring us together and unite us behind our teams.

The work of Celtic FC Foundation is the heartbeat of the Club. Celtic FC Foundation honours the founding ethos of Brother Walfrid as it works to create opportunities for society’s most marginalised and vulnerable groups. I would like to express my thanks to all who support and contribute to Celtic FC Foundation, without which it would not be possible to deliver such valuable work.

During the year, there were also changes on the Board of the Club. I echo our Chairman’s thanks and appreciation to Peter Lawwell and Tom Allison, whose contributions to the Club have been immense. I also note my gratitude to Brian Wilson, for stepping into the role of Interim Chairman and for helping bring unity and progress at a difficult time. I join with Brian and my colleagues on the Board to welcome Mark Keane, who was appointed on 17 September, and Raymond Buchanan, whose appointment will take effect following the conclusion of his current role, as we work to take the Club forward.

This season, we will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Club’s proudest moment, and celebrate the Lisbon Lions, their legacy and our supporters’ role in that journey.  The success of the Lisbon Lions continues to inspire us all. As we look forward together, I thank my colleagues for their hard work, dedication and skill, and on behalf of everyone at the Club I thank our supporters for everything they do for our Club. We all want the best for Celtic.

I know the words FSR can be a cause to scroll by or risk eyebrows getting tangled up with what hair some of you might have left, but there is an underlying reason for seeking more transparency on player squad costs in the Notes to the Accounts where staff and player costs are lumped together.

If the support know how close to the allowable FSR spend Celtic reach (£89m from latest accs) and the CFO, who decides on affordability, knows that we know what the gap is, then he will have to be sure that whatever it is, he will have to justify it every AGM.

So if any CST or CSL members are looking in, can they ask Celtic at AGM for clarity on the cost of each group?

Really?
By the time appointment’s are made we are likely to be a smaller club needing less apparent oversight.
The present board have presided over a decline in football standing in Europe.
A sharp decline in income.
A huge fall in customer confidence.
A deteriorating stadium that is selective in service fans receive.
A football department that is not fit for purpose in a club the size of Celtic.
They seem to be experts in managed decline though.
So replacements capable of such standards should not be that hard to find.

Try not to be draw by immediate emotions, and instead pick apart what is being reported, be rational try taking the name “Celtic” out of it.

Be led by the numbers, rather than the generic paragraphs that are repeated year upon year.

It is easy for me to imagine that an unemotional investor, lets call them LT, could arrive at a conclusion that the CEO and CFO are failing to deliver what the analysts expect.

They “managed” to reduce record turnover and profits, contracting the business and posting a loss. turning the virtuous circle into the vicious one.

That investor could say why didnt you sell the assets in a timely manner that maintained a profitable outome (ie Daizen on 3 occasions before financial year end, or Engels/hatate in January) and the executive say, we retained them to give best chance to win the league to have another chance at the bigger market pool where the gauranteed profit pool is.

As it turns out they did neither.

Certain board members have wanted out for some time, but have been persuaded to stay until replacements can be found. It’s no secret that Nicholson (and Wilson) count among the latter.

Certain outlets are of the opinion that replacements are hard to come by because the fans have made life unbearable for board members. Personally, I think they should be left alone outside the footprint of the stadium, but others disagree.

However, my own thoughts on why it is so difficult to persuade a qualified person to join the board as a NED are that it is impossible to fulfil the legal requirements of independence and oversight when another NED makes every decision. And this, as I’m sure you are aware, means that Celtic Plc is not fulfilling its duties according to Stock Market regulations.

I’m taking that as the here and now. I’ve yet to see signs of Tounekti being transformed into a CL big hitter. If anything players that have shown potential elsewhere which we’ve paid good money for, Hogh for instance, look more likely to lose their mojo playing for us. Another HuddleBoard extract:

“Since the sacking of Wilfried Nancy and Paul Tisdale on January 5, 2026, Celtic have played 25 games within the league through Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Celtic Park.

Over that period, Celtic have averaged 1.84 in xG for vs 0.93 against, for a non-penalty xG difference of 0.91 – i.e. within the 1.00 level Alan and often reference as when randomness gets to be materially impactful in driving results.

Over the same period, Rangers have averaged 1.80 vs 0.86 for a difference of 0.94.
Set pieces have been a material equalizer, with Celtic at 0.25 vs 0.28 compared to Rangers at 0.52 vs 0.18.

Rangers have the highest xG difference on set pieces and Celtic 7th in the league over the period.

The falloff in performance levels since Martin O’Neill returned for his 2nd interim tenure has been material. Given it included 2 transfer windows and per TransferMarket 15 players signed either permanently or on loan, to generate underlying performance levels lower than Nancy’s tenure despite that context has been some doing.

As Rhiann documented on the latest Huddle Breakdown flagship podcast, the shifts in style of play have been material vs recent seasons…and it appears to be getting worse. Through the 1st 7 league games, and despite the fixture list being relatively weak overall, xG conceded has averaged 0.97, which was almost 50% higher than the rate in the 2024-2025 season and 17% higher than last season’s rate…which was materially higher than the diabolical 2020-2021 season.

Defensive fragility has been increasingly evident, but we can now add seemingly increasing issues in attack, despite having bullied poor teams in a couple of games early this season:”

Mahe
(We now have a new JustGiving page set up to enable donations to be made for our latest charity appeal)
Have you had a strange nomination from Lord Lucan to propose Celtic plc cash pile as a recipient yet?

Indeed. If only the CST under David Low had taken up the pledge of £20k from Res12 shareholders to seek legal advice on Directors responsibilities things might have been different.
Instead they misrepresented the pledge as an attempt to pursue Res12 with SFA.

It was all discussed on SC on a Christmas Eve and I kept a copy.

The issue was also covered on SC at

From the BBC on Man City…

At City, one of the fundamental aims is to reduce risk of any market transaction, be it a purchase or a sale.
City grade players based on:

  • Ability;
  • Overall characteristics;
  • The system they play in at their current club and how the manager is asking him and the team to play.

Once those four aspects are observed, City’s aim is to understand not just how good the player is but how good he could become at the Etihad.

Celtic…
How much ?
We’ll give you half that.
Resale value.
How soon and for how much.

We are where we are and it is what it is.

We have no control or say in where we go.

In my experience what is happening now is a wake up call for The Bored and Support alike.

A bit like waking up from a slumber to find we are in a nightmare.

Real change will take time and two new Board members are lined up, one with good communications experience.

Some say aw naw not more DD yes men.

Others say this is a good thing.

I say ” we’ll see”. 🙂

My solution short term would be to find enough players with Donovan’s attitude and build a team around them.

No point taking a knife to a gun fight.
