Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves

The release of our annual accounts were very timely. They dropped as this blogs posters were debating Not Another Penny Campaign, the Collective had also done likewise, and of course they came just as we also experience a genuine and very alarming downturn on the field of play.

It’s worth mentioning those numbers would have been known in late July/early August.
What’s the point?
There’s several points when thats taken into account.

Faced with a significant drop and with about a month of the transfer window our executives were faced with major decisions namely what do we do?
Stabilize and slowly grow back then surpass the previous highpoint,,,
Curtail spending or spend very little,,,
Flex the financial muscle and jointly entice more supporter revenue, TV revenue, while stocking up on future player sales income via recruitment?
I insist most CEO”s in football would opt for the third option especially given the amount in the bank. We opted for the second and thats where the domino’s fall into place.

I thought we had bought well upto LASK, but like everyone felt it faded out after that even though some might turn out to be good footballers. That result, the accounts, and opting for that second option above essentially holed our campaign under the hull.
Martin is the man left holding the can, we also suffer to an extent, but he was hit with that double whammy in the space of a couple of weeks, bad accounts mean much less to spend unless he hits, the CL,,,then he doesn’t and realizes thats about it.
I often thought, and its been commented on, that it was almost as if a switch was flicked and our flame was extinguished. I now believe that double whammy floored football operations entirely.

It explains a lot of our transfer activity, like watching Sigur and Mahmic go to lesser alternatives. Like the board not being as keen on Genetis as the manager, per reports from Italy. Option 2, curtail spending and instead of about 15m to reinforce the midfield with three good players, we spent 4 on one and took two for free.

Option B, curtailing spend if the figures slide, more or less insures another Option B next season. The accounts aren’t going to suddenly leap in July’27, and now the heart has gone TV and prize income will decrease, as will player value, as will supporter income.
Option B just cost the bank balance 11 million smackeroonies.
You know this by now, but here’s my point, they cannot keep spending the bank account, which would be the result of Option B annually,,,faced with the backdrop of having to spend the bank account to not even stay still but get left behind, Option B must be abandoned.

Nobody especially Dermot would be silly enough to just save 77m and watch it dissappear, that would be unprecedented in football. 5 seasons of Option B would eat that cash in the bank, then who is paying the debt because Dermot won’t.
Besides all this would collapse the shareprice and the shareholders wouldnt allow that. As would Dermot doubling down and just reducing the quality slowly until we are the equivalent of a Sheffield Wednesday playing infront of 15k in League Two at 50k Hillsborough. Again, the money men just won’t watch their spoils dissappear.

Yup Option B must and shall be binned. The alternative is to avoid even facing Option B in the first place and coincidentally not long before the accounts were due a man who would known what they contained typed out an email asking to meet the Collective.
Brian Wilson would not have made that decision solo, he been ordered to and we all know who gave that order.

I find this very telling. Last season “we” were scum on the verge of knifing someone, apparently we are responsible for nobody joining the board (as if some well intentioned foreigner would care), now “we” are “invited” back onside as soon as they gulp at the figures and surely realize that Elite Level Adidas bonus will soon put a further dent in the coffers. This meeting (and I await the summary) was aimed not at unity but at finance returning, in my humble opinion.
What they offered as a carrot I’m dying to find out but apparently the world class club with a successful strategy have cottoned onto the terrible fact that they need us.
I hope they quickly realize we neither need nor want them.

Enjoyed the Huddle Breakdown piece.

Clear as the nose on your face that we’re in a period of rapid decline, uncomfortable truth that it started under BR, and continues apace under MON .
(Nancy 7 games is too small a sample, but we had more shots on goal under him than BR and MON last season .. defensively a disaster).
Since the game in Munich you can almost draw a direct line to the death of a team.

Be interesting to see if we ditch the ‘ Frankenstein ‘ hybrid in favour of our Captains preferred 4-3-3 or if we go full in on Monball?

Again, the short -termism in everything Celtic is hard to ignore. We really need to tear everything up and start again with modern coaches and set ups. ….but that ain’t happening for now.

What are we legitimizing? In retrospect it is even more shit now than it ever was. What were the Celtic board trying to salvage exactly? Except for their own income. Not incompetence at all. FIFA and UEFA are to blame for this fiasco. Israel should be banned from international football, and that would solve the problem. However, if every country drawn to play them refused to do so, the only upshot would be that Israel would qualify for the finals of every tournament while rocketing up the rankings.

September 24, 2026 11:40 pm

I agree that FIFA & UEFA are at least partly to blame.

I think if every country refused to play Israel it would force the authorities to act lest they look ridiculous and their competitions lose credibility.

Good evening

Representatives of the Celtic Fans Collective met with Celtic Football Club on Tuesday the 22nd of September at Celtic Park.

Representing Celtic FC at the meeting were:

§ George Campbell

§ John-Paul Taylor

§ Jennifer McGrath

The Celtic Fans Collective was represented by:

§ Alison Docherty

§ Paul Quigley

We structured the meeting around:

1.   How the meeting was arranged

2.   The Collective’s wider criticisms of the Club

3.   The critique of Celtic Connect

4.   The Collective’s alternative proposal

5.   A timeline for further engagement

The meeting followed a commitment from Brian Wilson that Celtic would engage with the Collective. In anticipation of that discussion, the Collective undertook detailed work on a proposed Fan Advisory Board and sought to arrange a meeting from June onwards.

Instead, Celtic published its Celtic Connect consultation online without discussion. It was promoted with little fanfare and the Club appeared reluctant to issue reminders to supporters. For a consultation intended to improve engagement, remarkably little effort seemed to be made to encourage engagement. A meeting was eventually offered the day after the defeat at Ibrox.

We placed Celtic Connect within the wider context of a culture supporters increasingly associate with compliance, nepotism and a lack of transparency. We also raised the Club’s failure to learn from last season’s mistakes, both on and off the park, and the growing disconnection many supporters feel from those running Celtic. The Club acknowledges that communication and engagement must improve, but its approach to Celtic Connect has done little to demonstrate that it has understood the problem.

Our central criticism of the Celtic Connect proposal is that a body cannot credibly represent supporters if the club appoints each supporter representative and retains significant control over its leadership and agenda.

We explained that this position is supported by:

§ The 2021 Fan-Led Review of Football Governance, which warned that club control over appointments and agendas can weaken supporter engagement.

§ Football Supporters’ Association guidance, which rejects clubs hand-picking the people intended to represent and scrutinise them.

§ Established supporter-engagement models across Scotland, England and mainland Europe, which demonstrate workable alternatives involving supporter elections, nominations by recognised fan organisations, independent oversight of selection and representation based on meaningful supporter constituencies.

§ University of Glasgow research involving 7,791 Celtic supporters, which found substantial support for a representative and institutionally protected Fan Advisory Board.

Our wider criticism was that Celtic Connect reflects many of the problems it is supposed to address. The Club would control the selection of every supporter representative, without clear published criteria explaining how applicants would be assessed or chosen, while retaining considerable influence over the chair and agenda. Most representation would be organised according to where supporters sit rather than how the support is actually constituted, with insufficient consideration given to its diverse needs, experiences and demographics. The model also offers no guaranteed voice for established supporter organisations and lacks clear institutional protections against the Club changing or withdrawing it. This risks creating a managed consultation forum rather than an independent body capable of representing supporters, raising difficult issues and holding the Club to account.

We then presented the Collective’s alternative model. This would give representatives a genuine mandate through supporter nominations and democratic elections. It would also provide greater protection over representation, chairing,

agenda-setting, transparency and accountability.

Celtic FC reps appeared to recognise that aspects of our proposal had merit. However, there was clear reluctance around democratic selection and whether elections were necessary. Some exchanges were challenging, but the meeting remained professional and the Collective position was presented robustly. We concluded by asking Celtic to commit to continued engagement with the Collective before finalising its model. George Campbell did not provide a firm commitment, but John-Paul Taylor agreed to provide a response to this quickly.

We will update members with any developments in due course.

Many thanks,

Jobo Baldie

If I were in Dermot’s position it would be spend spend spend. On the team and on the stadium. I would spend every spare penny. I would not rest until Sevco were playing in front of less than 10k. A slightly different approach from Dermot’s but then again, I am a Celtic supporter. A second liquidation event down Govan way would be most welcome. We don’t need a strong Sevco. We don’t need any Sevco. Scottish society would be a better place to live without any incarnation of this odious organisation.
Off topic. Does anyone know if George Foulkes has recovered from his near cardiac arrest after the Motherwell game. The poor man went mental. I know that the UN respectively declined his request for an emergency meeting of the security council regarding our penalty and that the Church of Scotland wouldn’t even consider his request to convene a special meeting of the General Assembly. Well done the moderator. Maybe he’s a Celtic supporter. Welcome back George. This small country needs men like you. Fine upstanding men of honesty, honour and integrity.
I see kris Boyd has returned for the new season spouting his usual impartial opinions. I didn’t hear him at the weekend so did he have anything to say on Beaton’s perfectly impartial officiating? Did he comment on any of the disgusting decisions? Have the sevcoians forgiven John for his aberration in awarding the obviously correct penalty against Motherwell? Has John’s name and plaque been restored to its proper place on the wall in the John Beaton sevco supporters club?
Sevco have won 5 league games this season, all by one goal, and there have been decisions in each game that won them points. But for these decisions we would already be 12 to 15 points ahead. The one decision that went against sevco, when a penalty was correctly awarded to Hibs, the sevco manager criticized the referee. Disgusting decision after disgusting decision goes in their favour and yet we remain silent.
Say something Michael.

The Huns are not the problem, Celtic are.

Every time we have a chance to step up and beyond, we actually step back. It’s happened on every single occasion since 1967 and , despite numerous changes to Board, Managers,Players etc ….the outcome is the same. Celtic never achieve all within their grasp.

There’s just something very flawed about the club. Always has been.

Maybe that’s why we love them?

After wasting £11.5 mill on Hogh, and hopefully not squandering money on the increasingly petulant Duran the chances of Shim getting any real game time are remote i’d say. The coaching team will be ‘instructed’ to play Hogh and Duran irrespective of their form or attitude. Shim will get the odd 10 mins here or there, perhaps.

waydoonsouthCSC…are you serious? These guys are both played with numerous partners in theis current Celtic team, mostly in positions and formations they are unused to, alien tot he poositions that caused us to buy them in the first place. Duran was kicked from start to finish at Ibrox. It wasn’t as bad at Celtic Park, but neither time did he stop trying. I’d disagree that he is petulant, but he is clearly not chuffed at being shunted onto the wing when Høgh is on the pitch.

He looks a top player in his proper role. Out wide, he is about as much use as Tounekti. I’d say the answer is simple-play him in his proper role.

Hogh has done very little to justify what, in our wee footy world, was a massive fee. He has a poor touch, can’t hold up a ball, and so far can’t lead the line. Aye but he scored goals in Europe and in Norway; yep, well, so did Ajeti in Europe and in the Swiss league. Failing in London after the Hammers paid £8+ million for him, of course, for some inexplicable reason Lenny wanted him, he turned out to be a colossal waste of money for Celtic as well. I see lots of similarities with Hogh and Ajeti. Of course, time will tell who is right here. Currently, is Hogh really that much better than an Idah or Kenny? Perhaps I am being a little harsh on Camilo, maybe.

From Celtic shorts:

”Scottish Premiership crowds topped four million for the first time last season as the league continues to attract the highest per capita attendances in Europe reports the BBC Sport Scotland…
From a 4.1m total, average gates in the top flight reached 17,903, up by 3%, as Celtic defended their title thanks to a dramatic final-day victory at home to nearest challengers Hearts.
Celtic recorded 1,112,508 home league admissions last season with the Scottish Champions being the only club from outside the big five league to make it into the top twenty. Putting it int the context of this week’s Celtic news regarding the Celtic PLC financial results it is clear to see how important the supporters’ cash is to the football club.”…..

‘Although on a negative note for the Scottish game, the reports also shows just over two-thirds of all Scottish Premiership minutes last season were played by non-Scots.

The European average is 47%, with only Greece, Portugal and Turkey having a lower percentage of locally trained talent than Scotland. Norway, Spain, Czech Republic, Netherlands and Sweden were the only nations with figures above 60%.

Thanks for that link. It brings out a key point about independence and who represents supporters.

I left this comment.

How will ALL the supporters decide?

What will be the criteria to be appointed?

Surely the best approach during talks would be to seek agreement on the criteria that is needed to provide independent input?

The Membership Service proposal put to Celtic last September was all about independence although it has a price. Supporters fund it.

Having read the Collective report I see my criteria point was central.

However the question of funding an advisory board is key to independence and who ultimately calls the shots.

My Membership Service proposal covers that.

The real independence required from Celtic is on the part of the NEDs – these are individuals that are paying lip service to their fiduciary duties.

The two incoming NEDs (regardless of bona fides) do not fill me with much hope – in particular, the hiring of Keane is another example of a director distinctly lacking in the independence required.

——————-

In regard to INDEPENDENT NED. What does it actually mean to the broader Celtic support ?

Keane is a part owner, 6.9%, the 4th largest shareholding (I think). Like his father before him, he doesnt need to be in deference to DD, he can think for himself and decide if the resolutions at AGMs are acceptable to the company.

I repeat this all the time.

Everybody with a sizeable shareholding, the 5 biggest and the rest with above a percent, have voted with the board for the last 20 years.

Nobody votes against a resolution. That is why we have incumbanets for 20 odd years.

So all these people align with DD resolutions. Every resolution get 97%+ vote and less than 3% against.

If the support believe INDEPENDENCE is actually voting against the board, what happens if MK doesnt, and continues to vote with the regime ?

Next, Buchanan might be on the board for his skill set, his linked in profile is full of well wishing from many Celtic supporting leaders of industry, many people I respect, the fella might be vocal in the board-room, we will never know.
