Look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselves
The release of our annual accounts were very timely. They dropped as this blogs posters were debating Not Another Penny Campaign, the Collective had also done likewise, and of course they came just as we also experience a genuine and very alarming downturn on the field of play.
It’s worth mentioning those numbers would have been known in late July/early August.
What’s the point?
There’s several points when thats taken into account.
Faced with a significant drop and with about a month of the transfer window our executives were faced with major decisions namely what do we do?
Stabilize and slowly grow back then surpass the previous highpoint,,,
Curtail spending or spend very little,,,
Flex the financial muscle and jointly entice more supporter revenue, TV revenue, while stocking up on future player sales income via recruitment?
I insist most CEO”s in football would opt for the third option especially given the amount in the bank. We opted for the second and thats where the domino’s fall into place.
I thought we had bought well upto LASK, but like everyone felt it faded out after that even though some might turn out to be good footballers. That result, the accounts, and opting for that second option above essentially holed our campaign under the hull.
Martin is the man left holding the can, we also suffer to an extent, but he was hit with that double whammy in the space of a couple of weeks, bad accounts mean much less to spend unless he hits, the CL,,,then he doesn’t and realizes thats about it.
I often thought, and its been commented on, that it was almost as if a switch was flicked and our flame was extinguished. I now believe that double whammy floored football operations entirely.
It explains a lot of our transfer activity, like watching Sigur and Mahmic go to lesser alternatives. Like the board not being as keen on Genetis as the manager, per reports from Italy. Option 2, curtail spending and instead of about 15m to reinforce the midfield with three good players, we spent 4 on one and took two for free.
Option B, curtailing spend if the figures slide, more or less insures another Option B next season. The accounts aren’t going to suddenly leap in July’27, and now the heart has gone TV and prize income will decrease, as will player value, as will supporter income.
Option B just cost the bank balance 11 million smackeroonies.
You know this by now, but here’s my point, they cannot keep spending the bank account, which would be the result of Option B annually,,,faced with the backdrop of having to spend the bank account to not even stay still but get left behind, Option B must be abandoned.
Nobody especially Dermot would be silly enough to just save 77m and watch it dissappear, that would be unprecedented in football. 5 seasons of Option B would eat that cash in the bank, then who is paying the debt because Dermot won’t.
Besides all this would collapse the shareprice and the shareholders wouldnt allow that. As would Dermot doubling down and just reducing the quality slowly until we are the equivalent of a Sheffield Wednesday playing infront of 15k in League Two at 50k Hillsborough. Again, the money men just won’t watch their spoils dissappear.
Yup Option B must and shall be binned. The alternative is to avoid even facing Option B in the first place and coincidentally not long before the accounts were due a man who would known what they contained typed out an email asking to meet the Collective.
Brian Wilson would not have made that decision solo, he been ordered to and we all know who gave that order.
I find this very telling. Last season “we” were scum on the verge of knifing someone, apparently we are responsible for nobody joining the board (as if some well intentioned foreigner would care), now “we” are “invited” back onside as soon as they gulp at the figures and surely realize that Elite Level Adidas bonus will soon put a further dent in the coffers. This meeting (and I await the summary) was aimed not at unity but at finance returning, in my humble opinion.
What they offered as a carrot I’m dying to find out but apparently the world class club with a successful strategy have cottoned onto the terrible fact that they need us.
I hope they quickly realize we neither need nor want them.

I think you might find it worthwhile reading this article about the lasting damage LNS did to Scottish football:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1LgNu5ECIDhTzbJcHzlBJNpLnBt7_2CY8/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=107947982974245186134&rtpof=true&sd=true
It is a long read but is based on documents Charlotte Fakeover made public and is 7 pages long but contains detail you may not be aware of that might add to an understanding of what took place.
There is no mention of Celtic in it because there is no documentation to show that they were involved.
However that gave PL plausible deniability of involvement and the letter from Doncaster to the SPL Board cc PL to accept the 5WA provided Celtic with justification for signing it.
There are two 5WA paras that do that:
“We would also intend to announce tomorrow that “the SPL is reserving its position in respect of alleged breaches of SPL rules in respect of EBTs. We expect to be in a position to make a further announcement on this issue within the next week” or something similar. I will circulate a draft before it is finalised.
The above is not a totally perfect solution from the SPL’s perspective, since oldco Rangers may potentially raise issues regarding the power of the SPL to pursue oldco for breach of the SPL Rules after oldco ceases to be a shareholder in the SPL (and Rangers FC cease to be a member of the SPL) in relation to pre-cessation events. This would be an issue for our Commission to take a view on, should the point be raised. Any such challenge to the jurisdiction of the SPL would be strenuously resisted on the basis that both oldco and Rangers FC were subject to the jurisdiction of the SPL when the EBT events occurred and that the SPL as the competition owner and organiser is the only party with jurisdiction to prosecute alleged breaches of its own Rules.“
What Celtic can say is that they signed the 5WA on the basis the SPL were going to look at Rangers use of ebts, which I believe became the LNS Commission, so Celtic were not giving up on the ebt issue.
However it transpired the LNS Commission was a sham for the reasons set out at the link and again Celtic could claim they had no reason to think that would be the case.
Another however is that when the SPL Board received the LNS Decision Celtic’s representative Eric Reilly was absent at the crucial acceptance point (and there is documentation that shows that). No wonder Celtic’s reaction was that of surprise
Based on all that information MIT, what is your or anyone elses’ conclusion on Celtic’s complicity, taking into account that when the Supreme Court made a final ruling that the full tax should have been paid Celtic asked the SFA to revisit the LNS Commission but the SFA on QC advice refused.
PS Apparently the Supreme Court ruling does not say anything about ebts being illegal or unlawful per se, although the natural conclusion has to be that if tax should have been paid Rangers must have stepped outside of some tax lawn when it wasn’t.
In respect of Man City and Rangers, the one thing that would really deter clubs from dodgy practice that after investigation is proven beyond doubt, is a rule that in legal terminology states that any prizes, cash and trophies, won by dodgy (to be defined) means, will result in the prizes being removed from the record and prize money repaid and redistributed.

AweNaw if this was anything other sort of scandal I would tend to agree with you but its different when it comes to the EPL and Ill lay out some reasons.
The sheer amount of eyes on the matter makes it impossible to sweep away.
The number of media has exploded and each will want scoop after scoop on this story. Theres soo much meat on the bone alongside an insatiable appetite to consume football content. They media will really get their teeth into this and have years of product, plus its Johnny Foreigner which they like.
Its gone International with Jose and Potchetino yelling about their lost EPL winners medal.
The EPL will want to be seen as the good guys to protect their global image and as such will play to the gallery that all is under control.
The reality its not under control and could spiral out of control. The EPL nor the TV broadcasters want a decade of uncertainty and judgements being awaited before everything settles down.
As for the EPL fans, basically theyve just wasted a decade of their football supporting lives if results get amended.
If the Euro clubs sue, they have CAS as a final fallback.
Thats years and years.
Can you imagine the final legal bill for that club if the loser is paying the other clubs costs also?
Finally, that New Trafford stadium that needs financing,,,United wouldnt go all guns blazing on City would they to get the seed fund for building work?
Hail Hail
