United Against City

Morning, all.

Some of you may remember that about ten days ago  I said I was looking forward to an international break for probably the first time ever. The reason for that was obvious-it meant three weeks that I didn’t have to watch Celtic  stinking the place out every time they went onto the pitch, watching while we were giving up fourteen or forty shots on goal against even the most ordinary of opponents. In short, we had a three week break from tearing our hair out while hoping that our management team might somehow conjure up a winning formation.

Even though we have a two point lead at the top of the table, this isn’t a great time to be a Celtic supporter. There are too many problems at the club, and too many employees who simply shouldn’t be there at all. That includes everyone, from the backroom staff, medical staff, playing staff and all the way up to the boardroom. But we know all this, and we’ve discussed it loud and long on here. I’ll leave it alone for the moment, because it turns out that our problems are only little ones compared to those that some clubs have. While I could mention the €2.6 m debt currently strangling Barcelona, Manchester City is  the obvious one.

City are the most successful club in England over the last fifteen years, and have doubled their trophy count during that time. Countless league titles, cups and even the Champions League have been paraded at the Etihad, previously the stadium built for the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Not content with getting the stadium handed to them on a platter, they then sold the naming rights to an airline. £400m, an amazing windfall (twice!) for a club which had spent so much of the previous three decades in the lower divisions. And might do so again soon.

Having been bought as a sportswashing vehicle for Abu Dhabi in 2008, the emirate wasted no time in splashing the cash, but rules were soon introduced to ensure that spending was related to footballing income. Owners could no longer spend their own money to buy success, it had to have been earned through acceptable channels. And City have been found guilty of inflating that income by almost £1bn between 2011 and 2018 alone.

Even worse for the club, the EPL released this bombshell during a three week international break, when the sports hacks are crying out for anything topical to write about. And they’ve seized upon it with gusto! Not for them the tears for a club torn apart through no fault of its own, nor are there cries for titles to be retained as they were won on the pitch. Nobody is even shouting that City are too big, too important, to suffer the punishment that their crimes demand. No sirree, every article since the news broke has been about the disgrace that this affair has wrought, and that the club must be punished to the full extent of the regulations.

Some of you will see parallels with the downfall of R1ngers, though I doubt any of us will see any parallel in the punishment arrived at by the footballing authorities. Lest we forget, that punishment amounted to a £250,000 fine levied on a club which was already in administration, and which was therefore unlikely to be paid. No sporting advantage was found to have been achieved as the club systematically defrauded the taxman for over a decade. No sporting penalty was actually enforced upon a club which had cheated its way to seven league titles and various cups. Let that sink in.

Not only were the Scottish football authorities prepared to turn a blind eye, so too were the media and the legal profession. Murray retained his knighthood, Lloyds actually allowed him to cherrypick the viable subsidiaries from his bankrupt firm-£1bn of PUBLIC money, remember-nobody went to jail, nobody has ever repaid HMRC, and the SMSM are still telling us today that R2ngers are the same club, and should never have been relegated in the first place. Complete denial of the process which saw them go bust (and therefore unable to honour fixtures anyway) and a new club formed, which was allowed to take their place, against regulations, at the bottom of the SPFL structure.

They do things differently in England. Hell, even David Conn was wheeled out of exile to comment. Everyone wants blood. There is broad agreement that titles and trophies won should be relinquished in the record books. The Asterisk Years at last! There is a growing discussion around points deductions of up to EIGHTY, which would definitely see them relegated. There is also a gathering storm in the EFL, which might refuse to admit an outfit which has been found guilty of such levels of cheating-why should they be the receptacle for ne’erdowells and bounders?

The procedure which found Man City guilty was no kangaroo court. Legal costs are estimated to be over £100m on each side, and the arguments made prior to the judgement have lasted over four years already. City have until tomorrow to lodge an appeal, and I have no doubt that they will do so, that they will fight this one through to the bitter end. That bitter end will, apparently, be decided in the UK, as EPL rules preclude appealing to CAS. The good news for City fans and the club is that the owners have indicated a will to fight, the bad news is that the opposing side aren’t going to walk away either. The cataclysmic news for the club which has dominated English football for the last fifteen years is that they have managed to do something which most of us have long thought impossible.

They have united the English press, which is unheard of even in time of war. They have got their teeth into a target, a villain of foreign origin no less. They can expect no let up on that front, indeed they will be like a dog with a bone. And even if the legal teams manage to spin out the appeal for as long as the four years that the original hearing took, we will see a death by a thousand cuts during that time.

The world’s superstars will no longer be queueing up to join what was once football’s most lucrative gravy train. Those that are there already will have lawyers poring over the small print of their contracts and looking for loopholes. Haaland will be ruing signing that nine year contract-though he might be lucky, and find that the appeals process stretches beyond that! In short, a win for either side may be a pyrrhic victory, attrition having already stripped the club bare.

Meantime, you can hear Minty himself discussing events on a podcast with Souness, which definitely falls under You Couldnt Make It Up. The two people most responsible for putting the huns in the shitter, firstly by spending money they didn’t have, and finally by being careless with their correspondence on the Boumsong transfer. I’m thinking of crowdfunding a statue for them!!!!

In my humble opinion us letting the Huns away with what they did was worse than their original offence. Cove Rangers are “considering all available options” after having a season-long registration ban imposed upon them by the SPFL following rule breaches.

The league body say the Scottish League 1 club admitted “failing to make a historic contractual payment to a player when due and then failed to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of that rule”.
“The club was also found to have provided incorrect information to the SPFL when it certified that it had no overdue payables to current or former players as at 31 January 2026,” the SPFL said.
“Following these rule breaches by the club, the tribunal imposed a registration embargo which will remain in place until 31 May 2027 and a fine of £5,000 (£2,000 of which is suspended).

Morning all

This may turn out to be a long, very boring piece.

The Man City story may be the last straw for me with football. Ever since a strange Saturday afternoon sixty years ago when my mum and dad started shouting about at the television about a man called Rattin I have been enthralled, disappointed enchanted and disgusted by the sport but now I mostly feel disgust.

My love of football has run alongside my support of Celtic – the latter is probably one of those things that is like my family, the Catholic Church and being Scottish in that even if I wanted to I can never quite shake off but football is different. It’s more like the music, books and films I like or even just the other sports I follow – football could go the way of the Who or Boxing, something I retain some affection for because of the pleasures it gave me in the past but now have no interest in rediscovering past glories far less following in the present.

Celtic and football intersect of course and at times I have been been disaffected with both but until the last year or so my disaffection with one has not coincided with disaffection with the other. Celtic’s shenanigans of the last 20 months have led to the abyss of mediocrity it stared into in January 1990 (when San Luis and my mutual friend coined the expression) being revisited. The team is abysmal, the manager should not be there, the board should not be there and the effective owner should throw himself in the biggest river he can find. I am sick of it all – I’ll still be a Celtic supporter but I cannot quite believe how self-induced, even self-willed, the current mess is.

Football has never been the beautiful thing people proclaim it to be and for me referring to football as ‘the beautiful game’ has, like patriotism, become a bastion for the scoundrel. The World Cup of this summer showed almost everything that was ugly about the sport- the woeful performance of the Scottish team as well as the final marking the end of a love-hate affair I’ve had for 60 years with the Argentinean national team seem almost the least of its flaws. The expense of the tickets, the breaks in matches, the dreadful standard of most of the teams, VAR getting more wrong than it got right, the posturing of the appalling Infantino and everything else about the tournament was horrible.

But the World Cup was just a symptom of a game that is now obnoxious and I suspect much more corrupt than one big club cheating as it did. On City specifically I thought the Prime Minister’s comments- as possibly selectively reported on the BBC website- were a dismal echo of those of both Salmond and Sturgeon’s in February 2012 when Rangers slipped into administration. No condemnation but instead something akin to a wish that none of it is true. An investigation lasting years and 115 guilty verdicts are not mirages- these people did it all right. There should not be hand wringing and a hope that the owners don’t walk away – there should be a clearly expressed desire for those owners to leave FFS. And as with Salmond and Sturgeon, Andy Burnham was/is a politician I have had high hopes for.

I doubt Man City are the guiltiest club out there. The running sores that are Real Madrid and Barcelona will be at least as bad. I cannot imagine Juventus has had a Saul on the road to Damascus conversion to righteousness. Across Manchester at Old Trafford there has been something rotten for 21 years and now they have Ratcliffe too. These are just about the most prestigious names in the sport and yet they stink of decay and degradation.

That UEFA has portrayed itself as some sort of knight in shining armour in opposition to Infantino is almost laughable. This is an organisation that has turned its primary club competition into the preserve of clubs from four countries and Paris St Germain whilst the standards in just about every other domestic league (other than possibly Portugal and Norway) have wilted. Because Infantino, a former UEFA official, is a charlatan does not mean UEFA are good guys- this is an organisation that has for more than thirty years thought it is fair that if, for example, Ajax plays AC Milan in a Champions’ League match that the Italian side gets three times the TV money because Italy has three times the population of the Netherlands. UEFA should not just jump into the biggest river it can find it should be ensured that lead weights are attached to it as it makes its leap.

I know other sports are corrupt- in fact I’d be hard pressed to name one that I think is untouched by corruption- but football is different. It is popular almost everywhere outside Antarctica and is a daily obsession for great swathes of Europe, Africa and Latin America. I wish it would clean up its act but I know it won’t. Supporters of the game so blindly possibly deserve better but those who run it make me hope that Hell exists.

Sorry for going on so much.

First class article, Bobby, matched by Jimbo67’s response.

Typically, with armies of high priced attorney’s on both sides of a complicated issue, an appeals process, as you correctly said, can last for years. I have a feeling that this will not, and that the EPL will wish to conclude it as expeditiously as possible, and by that, I mean this season.

The specter of lawsuits for compensation from other clubs looms large. Regardless of where City finish, some club is going to feel aggrieved. Prize money is allocated by position, and some will argue that they would have earned a European place or not been relegated, if not for City. City players will likely face chants of “Cheat! Cheat!” from opposition fans all season. That prospect is unlikely to enthrall US TV channels coughing up millions for the rights to broadcast games. I will be very surprised if at a minimum, City do not suffer the same fate as Juve, and are relegated. Decisions regarding title stripping will be fascinating.

I did not watch the video I posted last night on the previous blog to see how Souness and Murray danced their way around that topic, as I am sure it would have been nauseating.

What a mess!

I watched the beast podcast. Moonbeams came out with an interesting quote that he owned 90% of the huns and was there every day while “Dermot” only owns 30% of Celtic and sees it as an investment.

Can’t argue with that.

I emotionally gave up on Celtic and football the season after Seville and since then I became far more interested in the grubby politics than the sport

Don’t think it’s unique to Celtic it’s not.

I minimize my expenditure on it now

Some brilliant posts that mirror my thoughts and feelings exactly.

Like you all I was madly in love with Celtic since childhood, but I was struggling to swallow how our custodians had chosen to go along with the fantasy that Rangers survived and would only be out of our life’s for a couple of seasons.
While I was trying to digest that, Desmond chose to open his stupid mouth and made me so angry I just couldn’t take any further part in what has become a farce.
And due to money, my love affair with European football got ruined too, especially since they turned the champions league into elitist closed shop, where the same 8 teams basically play for the cup each season.

We should never let Desmond forget what a monumental fuck up he created by having us bend over and accept the cheating ..every time I think of him praising the deid club I feel like vomiting.

Expect many fans are disillusioned with football .
The strength of disillusionment will depend on the actual punishment.
The modern game is rife with corruption.
When people like Despot realised the potential profits with little effort or accountability the present situation football finds itself in was inevitable.

The EPL model is dependent on an international audience and the City corruption could have a very negative effect.
It’s in a precarious position as maintaining audience numbers are paramount.
Pretty sure Scotlands corrupt reaction
in similar circumstances will be viewed to see if it can help mitigate the situation created by City.
It’s a dilemma to retain audience and properly punish!

IQ4,

Thank you for the link to the KC Michael Ashcroft interview……very revealing. At the end of the interview he highlighted what I regard as the most serious threat to MC. Other clubs will litigate against them and, potentially, put them out of business. There certainly will be many clubs with a grievance, including runners up in the league, relegated clubs, clubs defeated in cups, clubs denied European slots, and opponents from other leagues. Quite a lineup of howling wolves…all supported by legal eagles who see a payday!

The Everton/Burnley case from last year provides a precedent where Everton were asked to pay compen of 35 million. Consider compen claims of that magnitude multiplied by many times…..it is almost like the discovery of a new, untapped oil well!

If nothing else, this highlights how important the five way agreement was in Scottish football in safeguarding certain institutions. Could MC die here? Most certainly! However, we are talking very deep pockets here and ones that care about success and NOT a club badge. There will be plenty of candidates to replace MC given the significance of the backing available.

Will the MC case threaten the EPL or football in general?

Highly unlikely, in my view, given previous situations from recent history.

Take the FIFA/UEFA scandal involving Blatter and Platini as an example. Both were ultimately cleared of corruption after a multi-year case and these institutions are still with us, serving up the latest Infantino inspired dishes of wonder. The band plays on, even if the chief violist is changed!

It will be interesting to observe the leadership qualities of the leading agencies involved..the FA, EPL, and the new-yet-to-be-tested football regulator. Fit and Proper…..a phrase that will gain prominence in the coming months.

Jimbo,

Congrats on an excellent personal narrative. It echoes much of my own disappointment with the game.

Football clubs started as expressions of their local communities. We could turn up and see our ambitions and hopes realised in the efforts of favourite sons playing for the team. Long since, many of these clubs have become, first the playthings of millionaires and, now, foreign government departments. Something important was lost.

Think of the transition of our own club….from feeding the poor to golf trips to Lisbon!

Off oot for a walk,

OK guys I’ve taken one for the team and listened to the Sourness blog.

It was quite interesting although not as much as it could have been. There were several “couldn’t mark his neck with a blowtorch” moments.

The first belter was

“Man City must have withheld information from the authorities”.

Yeah cos you’d know ALL about that eh?

Then “Auditors may not have been given all the information”.

You don’t say…

This was probably the best one:

“I’ve done a bit of homework for today. Juventus bribing the referees is the most obvious parallel”

Aye OK Dave! 🙄

“Most clubs have skeletons in the cupboard”

“With foreign investment you get things like what’s happened at MC.”

There was then a moment when GS said:
“I stopped you buying Ayr United instead of Rangers.

Murray instantly responded “I wish I had!”

A brief moment of regret?

Other notable comments were:

“Foreign money is distorting the game”.

It went a bit wrong at the end at Rangers. We were hit with an 85m bill that went up to 140m. We were in debt and my bank went bust. However The final figure was only
£33m.

Rangers were unfairly targeted.

Simon Jordan said to Murray.
“ I was approached about EBTs but I didn’t touch them. Did you really think it was a
Valid scheme?

He replied: it was signed off by MIH auditors Ernst & Young.

He ended by saying:

“Rangers re-started again” and they didn’t kick on enough after Gerard.

Ovetall a bit of a whitewash. I wasn’t expecting a hard hitting discussion so I wasn’t surprised.

October 1, 2026 5:59 pm

BILLYBHOY

Thanks for taking the hit. Your ears must be bleeding after that.

We expected Murray to continue his lies and prevarication, but I didn’t expect him to forget the simpler things. The £33m he referred to was bank debt, owed directly to HBOS. The other figures were the moneys owed to HMRC because of his EBT and other tax evasion schemes. And obviously no mention of the debts rolled into MIH, which came to around a billion quid.

I suppose it’s easy to forget who you owe and how much when it gets out of control.

Did he repeat that one? He did it with Jim Whyte on Talksport when SDM wrote his book.

A load of lies because he had every opportunity to pay the ebt bills as they arrived at Ibrox in tranches in Feb 2008.

readers will see that at April 2008 Rangers has ebt Determinations totalling £25,933,889
by March 2010 it had risen to £36,460,781.

That sum could have been paid according to SDM but he took a punt that he knew the law better than HMRC .

I however think that what is happening now is a painful wake up call and could be the best thing that has happened to the game because, Mags, it is now in football’s best interest to restore integrity.

Scottish football lost what integrity it had in 2012 and although the cause is different from Man City the underlying sporting principles still apply, unlike a club, they cannot die.

We’re only a football club, we’re run by risk adverse accountants and , by and large, uninspiring and dull individuals – DD apart.

However, our roots are deep in the community we live in and continue to serve. We may be far removed from the 1887 version, but times change and Celtic have changed too..as have you and I.

Guys! Seriously!

You all appear to be implying that Sir Duped might be being economical with the truth here?
Surely not?

Auldheid

In terms of title stripping I recall a tale that was told back in the day. I wonder if it has any veracity?

Green was invited to Hampden to discuss his options. During discussions about Sevco replacing RFC in the Premier League it was put to him that to facilitate this “Rangers” would need to relinquish the last 15 trophies won. He couldn’t agree quickly enough!

However, the following day he told McCoist what he had agreed to which led to him being pushed up against a wall and told in no uncertain terms that their fans wouldn’t agree to that.

It was academic anyway as the verbal agreement leaked and fans of every other club forced their clubs to vote against Sevco being parachuted into the top flight.
That in turn presumably led to the end of title stripping discussions.

Can anyone verify if this is what occurred?
