United Against City
Morning, all.
Some of you may remember that about ten days ago I said I was looking forward to an international break for probably the first time ever. The reason for that was obvious-it meant three weeks that I didn’t have to watch Celtic stinking the place out every time they went onto the pitch, watching while we were giving up fourteen or forty shots on goal against even the most ordinary of opponents. In short, we had a three week break from tearing our hair out while hoping that our management team might somehow conjure up a winning formation.
Even though we have a two point lead at the top of the table, this isn’t a great time to be a Celtic supporter. There are too many problems at the club, and too many employees who simply shouldn’t be there at all. That includes everyone, from the backroom staff, medical staff, playing staff and all the way up to the boardroom. But we know all this, and we’ve discussed it loud and long on here. I’ll leave it alone for the moment, because it turns out that our problems are only little ones compared to those that some clubs have. While I could mention the €2.6 m debt currently strangling Barcelona, Manchester City is the obvious one.
City are the most successful club in England over the last fifteen years, and have doubled their trophy count during that time. Countless league titles, cups and even the Champions League have been paraded at the Etihad, previously the stadium built for the Manchester Commonwealth Games. Not content with getting the stadium handed to them on a platter, they then sold the naming rights to an airline. £400m, an amazing windfall (twice!) for a club which had spent so much of the previous three decades in the lower divisions. And might do so again soon.
Having been bought as a sportswashing vehicle for Abu Dhabi in 2008, the emirate wasted no time in splashing the cash, but rules were soon introduced to ensure that spending was related to footballing income. Owners could no longer spend their own money to buy success, it had to have been earned through acceptable channels. And City have been found guilty of inflating that income by almost £1bn between 2011 and 2018 alone.
Even worse for the club, the EPL released this bombshell during a three week international break, when the sports hacks are crying out for anything topical to write about. And they’ve seized upon it with gusto! Not for them the tears for a club torn apart through no fault of its own, nor are there cries for titles to be retained as they were won on the pitch. Nobody is even shouting that City are too big, too important, to suffer the punishment that their crimes demand. No sirree, every article since the news broke has been about the disgrace that this affair has wrought, and that the club must be punished to the full extent of the regulations.
Some of you will see parallels with the downfall of R1ngers, though I doubt any of us will see any parallel in the punishment arrived at by the footballing authorities. Lest we forget, that punishment amounted to a £250,000 fine levied on a club which was already in administration, and which was therefore unlikely to be paid. No sporting advantage was found to have been achieved as the club systematically defrauded the taxman for over a decade. No sporting penalty was actually enforced upon a club which had cheated its way to seven league titles and various cups. Let that sink in.
Not only were the Scottish football authorities prepared to turn a blind eye, so too were the media and the legal profession. Murray retained his knighthood, Lloyds actually allowed him to cherrypick the viable subsidiaries from his bankrupt firm-£1bn of PUBLIC money, remember-nobody went to jail, nobody has ever repaid HMRC, and the SMSM are still telling us today that R2ngers are the same club, and should never have been relegated in the first place. Complete denial of the process which saw them go bust (and therefore unable to honour fixtures anyway) and a new club formed, which was allowed to take their place, against regulations, at the bottom of the SPFL structure.
They do things differently in England. Hell, even David Conn was wheeled out of exile to comment. Everyone wants blood. There is broad agreement that titles and trophies won should be relinquished in the record books. The Asterisk Years at last! There is a growing discussion around points deductions of up to EIGHTY, which would definitely see them relegated. There is also a gathering storm in the EFL, which might refuse to admit an outfit which has been found guilty of such levels of cheating-why should they be the receptacle for ne’erdowells and bounders?
The procedure which found Man City guilty was no kangaroo court. Legal costs are estimated to be over £100m on each side, and the arguments made prior to the judgement have lasted over four years already. City have until tomorrow to lodge an appeal, and I have no doubt that they will do so, that they will fight this one through to the bitter end. That bitter end will, apparently, be decided in the UK, as EPL rules preclude appealing to CAS. The good news for City fans and the club is that the owners have indicated a will to fight, the bad news is that the opposing side aren’t going to walk away either. The cataclysmic news for the club which has dominated English football for the last fifteen years is that they have managed to do something which most of us have long thought impossible.
They have united the English press, which is unheard of even in time of war. They have got their teeth into a target, a villain of foreign origin no less. They can expect no let up on that front, indeed they will be like a dog with a bone. And even if the legal teams manage to spin out the appeal for as long as the four years that the original hearing took, we will see a death by a thousand cuts during that time.
The world’s superstars will no longer be queueing up to join what was once football’s most lucrative gravy train. Those that are there already will have lawyers poring over the small print of their contracts and looking for loopholes. Haaland will be ruing signing that nine year contract-though he might be lucky, and find that the appeals process stretches beyond that! In short, a win for either side may be a pyrrhic victory, attrition having already stripped the club bare.
Meantime, you can hear Minty himself discussing events on a podcast with Souness, which definitely falls under You Couldnt Make It Up. The two people most responsible for putting the huns in the shitter, firstly by spending money they didn’t have, and finally by being careless with their correspondence on the Boumsong transfer. I’m thinking of crowdfunding a statue for them!!!!

Wales making it look easy against 10 men Norway, mind you, Haaland’s efforts is making more like 9 men.
Republic 2-0 up then sub Scales & Idah both of whom have been good.
Now 2-2.
Austria look like winning this now 😡
Popes 11 2-2 Hamas Holocaust hopefuls
Vatican bit again 😄😄😄
Republic could have won it, could have lost it.
Good game but Austrians looked far fitter.
plane drops 15,000 feet,no oxygen masks ,no casualties, no damage to the cabin…..10 minutes later it looks like an 18-30 flight to Magaluf,an absolute pile of shite…..oh and the elections are 3 weeks away….let’s blame Iran ….

Theres a rush before the mid terms to exterminate Palestinians in concentration camps.Trump has given the green light before he is hamstrung next month I think he is getting $2b for the decision
football continues as if it’s all normal
Murray was on a love in with White a few months ago and he said ‘ we had paid enough tax…’….so all was right then…

I don’t know where to start with it.
Firstly, I thought wandering onto a flight with a dagger was kinda impossible post 9/11. Similarly entering the cockpit without an invite.
In addition to that the footage we are seeing is utterly laughable.
No cabin crew visible and no oxygen masks have dropped. Then we get a plumber landing the plane!
And just to top it all off we get Bibi hugging the hero in a blood stained shirt.
There’s not a General Election due is there?
🤔
Seriously Brendan?
BB- Like a scene from Die Hard….up there with Trump and the Magic Bullet, where both had gullible idiots with elections coming up

Good reads and fulfilling expectations regards why folk do not go to see Celtic.
Anyone left here who still attends?
An example
From Ernie
‘In my humble opinion us letting the Huns away with what they did was worse than their original offence. As a result I have never been back to see Celtic or spent a penny on any merchandise and I never will until someone at the club who actually cares about the club and the support admits that it was a disgraceful act of sheer cowardice. I’m not holding my breath.’
Go the full and honest hog with yourself, stop typing of Celtic, stop thinking of Celtic,be honest put them right out your head.Go on try it you wont do it,thats cowardice..oops is that a game on the telly u can watch.stopping going to see Celtic is easy, keep wallowing in the pristine moral high ground of nothingness is empty and vacuous. You have no moral vantage point other than over your remote control although in this non attending echo chamber somehow it carries weight
If you still bump into TomMinogue tell him hello:-))
MC are a club trying to break into the monopoly of football and these are the only reason that clubs now need to play by rules that make absolutely no sense.
Man U with over 1.5 million in debt
Real Madrid the same
Barca are not far off.
Chelsea the world club holders sanctioned up the arse. But still play in Europe.
it all a farce. Something is only worth what others will pay.
pay £1 billion for stadium sponsorship. If that’s what they are willing to pay, that’s it’s worth.
and stupidly Newcastle try and play by the rules.
the football cabal at its finest, if clubs go bust, who gives a rats arse. Enjoy the ride to the top, the city fans will never forget those nights and memories.
good on them
Nabbla,
That post says way more about you than it does about anyone who has taken a stand and decided to stop funding a farce.
Of course, it won’t bother you in the slightest when you find yourself funding a league where the Huns are lording it over you again, eh?
Mr Desmond sends his love
The David Murray cheating years started as soon as he took over rangers and not with the DOS and EBT schemes. In 1988 Mo Johnston signed for them and not us because rangers dealt with his tax problem. They dealt with his tax problem by not paying tax. Likewise with Woods, Butcher, Hately, Gascoigne and all the other expensive players they signed.
The scandal isn’t that rangers cheated. Rangers have always cheated, one way or another. The scandal isn’t that the SFA knew they were cheating and did nothing. The SFA have always had rangers backs when they cheated. The real scandal is that our club sat back and said and did nothing. We should have exposed the corruption in Scottish football. We must have known what was going on and should have exposed the conspiracy between the SFA and rangers to cheat Scottish football and HMRC. The conspirators should have been jailed.
David Murray is still a knight of the realm.
Why all the handwringing now ?
When they bought Kyle Walker for £50
million the fix was obviously in.
Still, although they and others, have cheated for years, it was nearly worth it for the Aguerro moment and the look on the Man Utd players faces, and Ferguson’s 😀
Morning all
Thanks for the replies to my post of yesterday lunchtime. One or two rather swelled my head. As I nurse my way through a nastyish, lingering chest cold the compliments made my day.
Big Packy.
I am not quite as old as you but I remember Big Jock, Bob Rooney , the Lions, Joe McBride, Harry Hood and the half dozen brilliant youngsters who followed the Lions.
Auldheid
I cannot disagree with you that the City scandal should be a turning point but I very much doubt it will be. Instead as others suggest it will become bogged down in the courts and become football’s Jarndyce and Jarndyce, something which will drag on so long nobody will quite remember what it is about.
I wish I could be less pessimistic.

Tickets purchased for the Brendan Rodgers event next year
St Tams,
Ive been trying to get in to buy since 10am but the event is not coming up. How did you get in if you don’t mind me asking.
ATOB,

How so BaD?
He is not taking no stand.
He has comsumerized Celtic to the point its a tin of beans.he doesnt like them so he changes brand,- Does he change team? No,does he witter on bout no gaun? Incessantly.pacman in a square
Has it had an impact? 60,000 say no
The farce is what Ernie does, where the moral pristineness is in its own moral vacuum.
It bothers me that sway on this blog is dont go see Celtic.
Thats a problem.
Let me be clear BaD,I support Celtic,i buy my season ticket that I have had since Desmond Whites had an office in 70s
“Re Mr Desmond sending his love”
HahahahahahaHahahahahahahahahahaha
Is this me a bad guy for goin to see Celtic?
Or is it you confused and flailing about tropes, that are laughable.mr desmond indeed.
Why does it bother you that another Celtic fan wants to do what generations of his kin has done? Thats the nub of your bogus high moral ground
I am goin to see Celtic, you’ll not stop any1
In fact keep typing and become more and more remote from Celtic, thats all your doin mate, and remember even on here there are some season ticket holders
HH
BAD,
Thanks for the info. I went on the site as you said, only to discover it’s sold out. I had been using the QR code provider by PJD on his flyer last night at the Paul McStay event. I was on at ten o’clock and tried for 90 mins and the event never came up. I’m more than a bit annoyed with acsom about this. Anyway thanks for taking the time to let me know. If anyone has two spare tickets I’ll happily take them!!
ATOB l phoned at 9.58 and got through about 10.15.
Hope you’re successful
ATOB
Just seen your post.
If I hear of any, I’ll let you know
Nabbla,
You couldn’t be more wrong about me. Moral high ground? You won’t find me up there, as I have absolutely no problem with anyone who wants to go, nor those that have made a stand and opted out.
Isn’t it you who spends your days trying to belittle folk who, let’s be honest, are only pointing out the bleeding obvious that, to keep funding a farce will only see the farce continue.
As for people like Ernie – I have absolutely no doubt the guy can speak for himself.
Can I make it any clearer I cgaf whether you want to go see our team? I wish you nothing but happiness in doing so ..My only problem is in your need to come across as being somehow more worthy as a Celtic fan .. it’s not a competition!
I try really hard to accept we are all just fans – nothing more, nothing less. I will reassess my own position when king rat has been removed from my club, as him and his lackeys make me feel physically sick with their love of the Huns.
My only question of you would be why you can’t just do your thing without trying to belittle those that are following their own beliefs? Is that too much to ask of someone like you?
I’d have more respect for you if you were to just dance to your own choon while leaving others to do likewise.
ATOB,
AHH, that’s a bummer.
Let’s hope someone who can help notices your need and can help you out.
All the best.

Nobody is buying this shite
St Tams,
Thanks for info. I was at the Paul McStay event last night and PJD provided a flyer. Turns out it didn’t work. I didn’t think to look anywhere else except the acsom site and there was no lim there either. Bad craic from PJD.
BAD,
Thanks again for the help.
Right back to lurking.
Sometimes, for many, the pull of going to watch the Celtic is more, much more, than all the wrong things they, the ‘board’ do.
When the ground hoves into view and you walk up the steps to your area and see the green again, that sense of anticipation kicks in and you, we, support the lads who run out.
It’s a powerful drug and they know it.
We know it better though.
Hail hail.
https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/mp-seeks-hmrc-answers-tax-implications-manchester-city-ruling-2026-10-01/
“However, the actions City are accused of would serve to artificially inflate a company’s profitability, and would be more likely to pay higher taxes.”
So why would HMRC want to intervene? To stop tax being overpaid? Or for the UK government to take control of the process?
Also these accusations/ suspicions have been in the public domain for years. HMRC have audited and investigated the self employed and many other organisations and businesses on far less serious grounds

Did Manchester City cheat HMRC out of £12m?
EL,
I’m no expert on UK tax affairs but wouldn’t Mancini be liable for the unpaid tax and N.I and his employer liable for unpaid PAYE?
I’d imagine that any overpaid corporation tax which is the case here wouldl also be subject to interest per annum circa 3% in the u.k???
So (overpayment+interest)-unpaid PAYE=what?
Wouldn’t surprise me if “what?” is close to zero and is as well calculated as Mancini’s public admission

I’ve no idea. That point may have been raised in the comments section of the article, I haven’t checked. I’ve no great interest in the detail of the case, I just find it interesting to see the contrast between how stuff like this is regarded in the EPL compared to the SPL.
12 days since our third defeat in a week and two in a row to the Huns . It’s obvious;
We’re sticking with O’Neill, so we have to go back to how we adapted when Nancy left and get a system that the players are happy with. ( Crazy as that sounds).
The big issue is – from CCV conments- that they’re not understanding the instructions at all and , most likely confused by Maloney and MON views on getting the ball forward quickly.
However, we’ve lost total control of games against every single opponent, so that has to change immediately. Likely be a 4-3-3 for a while in that case , but possibly, giving our patchy wingers, 4-4-2 and then introduced them into a 4-3-3 once game is under control?
Please God, let them have been working on this during the break, but seeing as KT was spotted in Santa Ponsa, it seems unlikely.
EL,
yeah me too. Absolutely
And after what happened to the huns the outcome is inevitable I suspect.
So far the investigation and it´s findings and the appeal lodged by City has been independent. That’s a big worry for the UK government. Much to their consternation they presently have no sphere of influence and they need one badly.
It´s not as if they can arrange for a sham shame game and then a subsequent government summit as the environment isn´t as parochial.
The tax angle is complicated as by UK law they might well have paid too much tax and why ask to investigate this all now when it was well kent anyway and others have been brought to book. It all is so very convenient.
Could we see some malicious prosecutions aimed at the guys on the commission or some threatened MI5 smear campaign against some EPL high heid yins to help keep this one running. A perpetually postponed judicial inquiry perhaps ?
Will Andy Burnham talk soon about the very fabric of Manchester society. No kidding bricks buildings and roads akin to the Commonwealth game east end refurbish
It´s more entertaining than the sport on offer
And you don’t have to pay for it unless you have a TV subscription or pay UK tax
SAN LUIS
Seems everyone not on international duty was given the first week of the break off.

UAE officials have warned the UK government that the severity of Man City’s punishment could undermine their appetite for future grand-scale commitments in Britain, according to people familiar with the matter
They consider the Premier League’s actions to have an influence on the bilateral state relationship, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing undisclosed information
The extraordinary pressure comes after Andy Burnham faced criticism, including from within government, for saying Man City’s Abu Dhabi owners should not be disqualified specifically because of the investment they bring to Britain
