Battle for the SPL (rights)

I read yesterdays news regarding a potential new TV deal with great interest. As always however, the devil is in the detail.

Okay so the clubs are offering more televised games in the new package so yes its not a pay raise but it is actually good leveraging of your collective product. In theory the income boost helps further stimulate a top flight I maintain is on the rise thus not only negating the stay at home on the night supporter but attract larger numbers into the stadium in general due to a better product. At least that would be the plan and in fairness theres not many clubs that do not sign well these days.

Ten or fifteen years ago I would have said a better TV deal is dead in the water, these days every Tom,Dick, and Harry wants a slice of the pie/any pie to try and entice subscribers. While we were always Sky’s filler content, there’s no reason we couldnt flip to a different platform and elevated/promoted/exposed much better than Sky. Off the top of my head I count 7 media outlets that could bid for some number of SPL games and while unfortunately that’s bad news for TV viewers with all the different subscriptions needed, imo opening up the revenue stream right under your nose makes perfect sense for the SPL clubs.

I also believe it is collectively clever to demand an actual deal rather than a broadcaster paying for an individual game, that’s not only less Pay Per View matches thank God but also stops the Big2/3 pocketing the majority of the extra income via being given the most airtime and subsequently renumerated better than the others.

Plus to be honest its a good time to get more exposure as the top flight is going to get very interesting over the next decade. With Bloom, the various Yanks, Dermot retiring,,the SPL might look ordinary at first glance but its in a state of flux and will evolve for the better therefore there really should be broadcaster interest in the product. For all the EPL hype it’s mostly about Man Utd finding their way back to the summit, if Hearts get their hands on a title that approach would have double buy-in up north from the tradional Big2,,,there’s your broadcasters dream and whoever holds the rights should that come to pass will hit the proverbial jackpot and I give that scenario 3/4 years max.

More games on TV will mean more terrible commentators more often though, don’t say you haven’t been warned.

Good morning, friends.
I didn’t catch any news regarding a new TV deal. Will it benefit the fans or just inconvenience them even more? Apparently some people have Fire sticks and sim8lar devices that already allow them to pretty much watch any game they want to, regardless on mainstream TV coverage. We’ll see….

This is an interesting article on why free streaming is becoming a major problem now for those that cover the game.
Already this season Celtic have been live on four different platforms, each one requiring a subscription to legally view. If everything was on the one platform eg Celtic tv or SPFL TV for example there are probably many who would happily subscribe to have every game in the one place.

There’s no way a new TV deal will be to benefit the fans who attend, none whatsoever. The days of Saturday, 3pm k.o are firmly behind us. Friday, Saturday,Sunday and Monday nights are a certainty.

That said for those of us who live abroad, it’s probably very welcome. Still, will impact on the Irish support immensely and the tourist footfall.

Rebus,

Thanks for the lovely message.

In a world short on happy news, it’s is good to hear one of the good guys getting great news.

I know, like me, you have wrestled with the question about what Celtic means to you these days, and also whether you want to even post on the subject anymore, but I really hope your new-found peace of mind means you can put all of that aside and just enjoy Celtic the way you once did ..free from the add-ons.

All the very best to you & yours.

I’m sure I speak for many when I say that TV deal talk leaves me cold. Many years ago it used to excite us all until greed killed the golden goose.

The TV companies have carved up the sport and it’s got to the point now that they have sickened the average fan. I was with SKY from the start. I stayed with them even when my employer, BT, entered the fray. However, I got pissed off when it became necessary to subscribe to a growing number of providers to see every game played. I don’t expect this to improve any time soon sadly.

I’d be happy to pay a monthly subscription to watch TV but I’m not paying up to 5 companies for the same service.

Ironically, I came on last night to say that my dodgy box was playing up. I had to uninstall then reinstall it this morning.

My nephew and neice go on the Port Hibs bus, as is the way of things when a season card holder cant go, the seat get offered up to others in the club.
A regular group of non season books get the benefit.

But what is very noticeable for the Europa games is the effect of a drop off in HCTS numbers, and less and less school kids actually attending because the families cant afford it.

The 1.60 booking fee per ticket as well, a pure rip off, if 4 tickets are bought in one transaction that should be one booking fee,

Official face-value tickets for kids (Under 18s) at Manchester City European home matches at the Etihad Stadium start from £10.00.

Unlike Liverpool’s fixed-rate pricing, Manchester City uses a tiered structure where prices vary depending on the opponent, seating stand, and tier.

Official UEFA Champions League Prices for Under 18s

• Starting Price: £10.00 (typically for lower-profile group/league stage matches in the upper tiers).

• Maximum Price: Up to £32.50 for high-profile knockout stage matches or premium seating areas.

• Free Entry for Under 5s: Children under the age of 5 can enter the Etihad Stadium for free if they are accompanied by an adult, but they must sit on the adult’s lap as no separate seat is provided.

Special £5 Local Resident Initiative

If you live in the immediate community surrounding the Etihad Stadium, Manchester City runs a Local Resident Ticket Initiative. For selected European and domestic home fixtures, they ringfence 100 to 500 tickets via a random ballot where Under 18 tickets are heavily discounted to just £5.00.

MIT,

Feel free to use the “impossible” statement anytime. My friend has long since passed away. He was quite a character and played a major part in developing Marketing as a subject in Colleges and Universities in Ireland.

That conference that I mentioned is the reason that I ended up in Canada. After my presentation a couple of deans of Canadian Business Schools offered me a one year contract. I took a sabbatical from my Scottish university and went to Canada. After a couple of months, they offered me a permanent job. I accepted subject to getting immigrant status in Canada. That is a story for another time.

My connection with Celtic was strengthened when the club introduced live audio broadcasts of matches. The first year was free and I was more than happy to pay after that. I cannot remember when that service started but it included Jim Craig and Bertie Auld doing match analysis. I do not think that level has been reached again.

Off for a bath,

Rebus

Hi Steve:
Kompany follows that up with 2 vs 2 with 4 goals to aim for. Brown and Roxburgh did that one as well back in the late 70’s, early 80’s. Truly knackering.

The debate on ticket prices sparked my interest in how much gate revenue matters to Celtic versus EPL clubs. This matters because Celtic are more dependent on the gate than the typical EPL club because of the disparity in TV revenue.

I used AI to generate a framework for my analysis but I checked the data independently.

Celtic. 24/25. 25/26

Broadcasting. 23%. 25-30%
Gate. 20%. 18-22%
Commercial. 31%. 35-40%
UEFA. 27%. 10-15%

So Celtic are heavily dependent on Commercial and UEFA contributions. I suspect merchandising is only a small part of Commercial which would minimise the effect of the “Not Another Penny” initiative.

If we compare these data to that of the EPL as a whole, we get, for UEFA 23/24 season:

Broadcasting. 50%
Gate. 14%
Commercial. 36%

UEFA revenue is not included in EPL data because not all EPL clubs get the opportunity to earn it. A couple of things hit me in the eye. First is the relative importance of Commercial to Total Revenue. Is this the future of successful clubs? Secondly, gate receipts are more important to Celtic than to EPL clubs, who are cushioned by the mega Broadcasting contributions to total revenue. What does this mean for the future of the club?

Take my own case. I am not from a “Celtic” family. I am an ex-pat and cannot attend the stadium. I am in the second flush of youth, not the first. 😀

What is the club doing to recruit fans like me, or, indeed, to replace me? Declining CSAs, shoddy TV coverage, and no direct communication aimed at my marketing demographic…these seem to be the response. Set this against the growing presence of recruitment to EPL clubs aimed at my demographic. Frankly, it is frightening.

Who could think the future of the club looks good? You can look forward to the revenue from STs forming an ever larger percent of total revenue. I hope the club will look after you all. It will need to, otherwise…..

Tim Horton,

Thank you for your kind remarks. Frankly, I am at a crossroads. I love posting and interacting on here. I no longer watch Celtic games so my contributions are limited on what matters…the games, the results, the performances.

I stray into personal stories and current affairs. I know there will be a barrier on how much of this can be tolerated on a Celtic blog.

I also feel I have been given a chance to do somethings differently, better even.

It just seems like such a waste seeing the club miss opportunity after opportunity to put itself in a better place….football wise and financially.

Bayern Arsenal is a good watch. Two really well coached teams, both of whom are trying to create.

Have to say, i seriously underestimated both coaches. It took a while for Arteta’s team to really shine, but he has them playing really nice passing football. And I thought Bayern had moved too soon for Kompany, and that he would have benefitted with another year or two before taking the Bayern job. But both have proven themselves to be very good managers. Among the very best young managers in the game.

The financial ineptitude of the plc is one of achieving record success in revenue terms to reversing that significantly in one season. And the very strong possibility of failing year on year hereafter.
Multimedia, sponsorships, other commercial activities ( accounting for 40% or so of revenues previously) will decline quickly as irrelevance becomes part of our obsolescence strategy.

We are a season or two away from permanent ECL level participation.
CL and EL competitiveness are already being eroded and our appeal will diminish to potential talent and the inevitable waning supporter interest.
In tandem with that homegrown talent – the better ones – will be tempted abroad. That is happening already and we will struggle to put together a credible home grown squad quota.( 7 or 8 are required to fulfil squad numbers.)

Looking on at other clubs proper engagement with the sport and wondering what could have been.
