The Big Dilemma
Morning, all.
It’s a big night for us tonight, probably our last chance to get any sort of European challenge up and running. On top of that, it’s a timely reminder of when we were a force in Europe, before the beancounters and downsizers took control.
We play Celta Vigo at home tonight, one of the teams we conquered on our way to Seville. Back then, few teams would relish being drawn against Celtic in Europe. Admittedly, the chances were that they would get a result in their home leg, but we were a formidable force to be reckoned with, and damn near unbeatable at home. That hard-earned reputation has taken a severe kicking over the years and is little more than a distant if fond memory now, but tonight is an opportunity for both nostalgia and redemption.
We’ve endured a ropey spell around the end of August and start of September but it’s too early to say that we’ve come out the other side yet. The long international break seems to have given us the time to work on improving domestically, but last week’s first half against an admittedly very good Benfica showed us that we have a long way to go if we want Europe to be our benchmark.
Europe is certainly the standard that the fans and dare I say the players want us to be measured against, but try telling that to the suits. I’m beginning to think they’re getting fed up with all the free junkets abroad, the all expenses paid jollies that come with the Celtic blazer and tie. Personally, while I’ll agree that it might be possible to have too much of a good thing, I think I’d be all for the all expenses paid jollies. And a bit of gladhanding the nobs at UEFA might come in handy for another job further down the line.
Not our lot, though. To assemble a team worth a damn in Europe costs too much money-our money, of course, but try telling them that. It’s a lot of effort too, all that looking at videos or listening to agents telling you how brilliant their client is. Then there’s the negotiations to sign the player, just when the missus and kids are wanting a holiday, you know?
Facetious? Maybe. But if anyone can offer a better reason why our lot have turned their backs on the continent’s biggest source of income, I’m all ears. Especially when our domestic TV rights for a whole season cost about the same as Sky pay for any two games down south. But anyway, tonight.
Sunday’s display was our best in a long time, and we will hope to build on that. The Vigo manager will be heartened though by the number of times Hearts cut through our midfield and defence to get a shot away, same as has happened in every game this season. That there is where the game will be won or lost. Will we be able to make enough chances and convert enough of them to counter the ones we will give up? Or does MON have an entirely new gameplan to put on show which will cut out the schoolboy errors that are damaging our season and giving us all hearties?
After such a resounding victory I would expect the manager to name an unchanged side, and if everyone was fit I’m quite sure that he would. However, the hamstring complaint that forced Callum Osmand off at half time probably throws a spoke into that plan. To my mind, it would be foolish to play him again immediately, as he has a history of this problem. Playing so soon afterwards is likely to aggravate it, so I expect him to be rested. And this is Martin’s big dilemma.
He surely can’t take Duran away from the centre, nor drop Hassan, not after Sunday when they were both excellent. But he surely cannot consider bringing back Tounekti either. Yet sticking with his 4-3-3 means exactly that, as Yang is still injured and Jota isn’t in the squad. So here’s a wicked wee alternative for you all (and hopefully the boss) to consider.
Sacrifice the third attacker and go 4-4-2. We’ve all been screaming to beef up the midfield anyway as it is an absolute necessity against better than usual opposition. Stick The Ox in there, a man with extensive European experience and who was badly missed against LASK. You know it makes sense.
Of course, that on its own might not be good enough. There are few mugs around at this level, and Vigo have shown themselves to be a very capable side. We will, as ever, be looking for every player to be on top of his game with no lapses of concentration, no daft tackles and no brain farts. Only a win tonight will be good enough, or we can write off entirely the remaining five games in Europe. And that for a club of our size will be a disgrace.

14 goals lost in last 4 Euro games, and it’s not over.😱
McGregor sells the jerseys, terrible clearance.
He could have stopped that and walked out with the ball as no Vigo player was near him.
Ach, fed up mentioning defensive clearances, amatures.
The Spanish and Italian teams over many years have always found a way to be favoured by smaller country referees….this Bulgarian prick is no exception.
Defence is not coached properly
You can see it from the tv.
All out of position when not in possession
In Scotland you can get away with that but in Europe you will be punished by relatively shite teams like LASK and Celta Vigo

I thought the same last season with Engels. Was basically asked to do everything, and ended up looking overwhelmed.
I hope the same fate doesnt befall Baur.
Donovan is a total bombscare.
Oh, here comes Tounetki.
Tounekti on😱
FFS Tounetki on. That’s it.
Just realised why McGregor won’t get subbed – no one’s realised he’s on the pitch.
Anyway at 81 minutes in the Europa league in October getting out arses kicked again by mediocre opposition … more importantly… the question on all Tims minds… whit are the Huns daein?
Were getting a lesson here unfortunately .second to every ball .
Hopeless shot from Donovan.
This ref’s decision making beggars belief.
I don’t know why scales is complaining it was a foul. Subsequently the tit booked him for petulance
Hearts gubbed earlier.
Scots co-efficient sinking like a stone.
They are pressing us all over the pitch and we can’t beat it.
Sorensen singularly unimpressive, in all facets of the game.
Sorenson booked, idiot.
We are fecking hopeless.
Donovan booked after ref gives a throw in the wrong way.
Sorensen deserved yellow
Donovan deserved yellow
Tit chances galore
wtf
as Ex_Machina alluded to yesterday we are witnessing the end of Celtic in Europe. It’s fucking embarrassing. It’s over. Back to the Huns.
still 2 minutes left
Besiktas next team to beat us.
We could finish rock bottom and winless.
Humiliating
Lost count of the unmarked players at the edge of our box. Coaches summed up by bringing on Forrest to preserve the beloved 4-3-3. Beginning to believe I am watching something that they aren’t as the issues are blindingly obvious. Got what the coaches deserved feck all.
Four in a row, and out of Europe before Hallowe’en.
Five meaningless games to come.
Desmond(s) out.
Played well for an hour but we ran out of steam and got punished by a well organised team, who , if we’re honest, are better than us in most departments. Much work to do .
Special mentions to the Ref. As bad as I’ve ever seen at this level in Europe.
Like I said this time last week, I’m glad I gave up my dodgy Firestick . It sounded painful .
Time to earmark your budget for season tickets next year and don’t forget to budget for the plate on Sundays!
laters
Wouldnt say our defence is entirely at fault . Midfield is non existant tonight .dont know how negrens is still on the field calmac not much better. We sub buer and bring on sorenson .who bought this fella ..
More nonsense when we are up against it,I’ve seen worse Celtic squads ,but a better coach could do a lot better
was like playing with 10 men tonight..
Celta were as advertised. Defensively solid. Well coached. Moved the ball around pretty well, without looking particularly dangerous up front.
Celtic had a good 15 minute spell in the first half, and after they scored. But Celta probably deserved the win over the 90 minutes.
those are the calibre of teams you simply have to beat at home, if you want to do anything in Europe.
2nd bottom of League.
3 goals better off than Ararat-Armenia
Europe is done. Best used as a test ground for different formations and styles. It’s become a free hit….as have we.

We’ll soon catch them, Calton.
Probably after the Besiktas game.

INIQUITOUS IV😢
AI suggests that Ox is earning £55,000 per week at Celtic. What is he doing there? What are the set of circumstances that would see him on the field? Our anonymous captain played for the entire game again. Look coaches, we have meaningless games left in the competition, how about giving McGregor and the 4-3-3 a rest?
Tonight added to the astonishing total of Celtic games in Europe where upon conceding a goal, we IMMEDIATELY concede another.
Baur’s honest answers, showed up the lack of coaching ability there
I don’t care if you are just a punter or in the collective the trust the green brigade whatever. You need to stop giving these fucks yer money…… and replace them with what I hear you say? Who cares
It’ll work out
MON should quit
We have won 2 and lost 5 of our last 7 games.
Nancy won 2 and lost 6 of his 8 games.
This is Nancy Mk II territory.
Just listened to MONs after game interview.
He sounds like McInnes
Celta Vigo 22 shots to Celtics 8
Apart from teeing up the winner for Celta can anyone tell me WHAT THE FUCK our captain was doing on the park tonight???
He was absolutely invisible. Which is probably why MON didn’t replace him with the Ox at HT.
I can’t think of any other reason!

Replace them with what I hear you say?
Bodo Glimt’s entire set up from directors/CEO, through first team management to youth teams and academy coaches.
That would be a start IMO.
Anyone still craving foreign refs after that performance?
Another goal from the edge of the D.
Another Europe game with two goals lost in 3 minutes.
We just don’t look fit.
We dont press as a team, We struggle to beat the press of any organised team,
Coaches are out of their depth,
TSATC
Anything
Agreed.
Step 1
Get rid of this Macroom bunch first!
Need to get them to just fuck off executive cut and run like. He is not even the majority shareholder. Why so many cap in hand Tims?
Mags
FWIW I think we’re stuck with them until DD pegs it or retires.
Like him or not he has a gravitas about him that some people fawn over.
Being a self made billionaire will do that.
So I think nothing changes until he goes (one way or another).
But when the boy king takes over, then things might change.
eh?
