Let the People sit !

First fans where in, now fans are out. Fan-bloody-tastic.

I must admit that Saturday’s game was the first time I really missed fans in attendance. No harm to Ross County but whoever was controlling the artificial crowd noises either didn’t have a lot to work with or had a bad day at the office. Maybe both, but it just wasn’t working, not sure if you noticed or felt the same.

At the same time we know some games including our own had 300 fans in attendance, a strange number considering that the egg chasing had 700 hardy souls watching. Either that sport has more influence or bigger stadiums, for its hard to claim eminence as the national sport such is Footballs right, when a rival can twist bigger arms or is seen as more respectable.
Whilst it was probably the weeks highlight for the lucky 300 souls, as mentioned before it certainly never helped me in feeling any atmosphere, perhaps if the home side had scored 5 that might have been different.
And now just when fans had one foot in the door, they are once again shut out.

Its hard to swallow on any level. There’s a great degree of hypocrisy involved in that one could go to the pub or restaurant, use public transport or maybe a haircut, even go to work, and chances are all of the above actions would bring a greater risk of infection than 300 spread throughout an entire stadium with masks on as mandated.

Lenny yesterday claimed it is ‘vital’ we get fans back, and he himself has came down as a big proponent of playing games if rather than postponing, rightfully saying he cant see the sense in postponing only for the original issue to arise again and again.
Vital may not be an over exaggeration by the way. While this season may be pulled off, we cant count on that again, and a fanbase that might be worse off than this time last year certainly should not have expectations placed upon them to add to their worries.

Clubs without fans will be forced to severely cut costs, the smaller the club the more drastic the cuts. This would lead to an even more skewed league, which does little to help our institution develop or entice larger television revenue. Should one club fall, the league falls.
Should the league fall, our own club is in danger along with all the rest.
The interconnected nature of football may not be immediately apparent, but clubs are in unprecedented times and will be hanging on every word the first minister says regarding the reentry of fans.
Sensing that fans will not pay the previous season ticket amount again and especially not if the season gets called with zero in the way of refunds, all the member clubs must be genuinely concerned here.

Common sense must be used in getting the turnstiles open again,,and all politics must be put aside here. All involved in the decision need to be responsible, as do fans of course, but fact is stadia offer a great opportunity at controlled social distancing events through strict ticketing enforcement.
Let the people sit.

Mahe,
I am in agreement with you. We need to get the fans back in or the game is going to die. Celtic will struggle to survive along with the rest of the top flight and the lower leagues will be mothballed before returning as junior football in years to come. There is a lot of fear about attending these events which is understandable but if it’s tightly controlled then it’s down to personal choice. My work place had a person test positive yesterday and we carried on as normal. We observe strict protocols in the work place and the advice was if this has been done then we will be fine. I’m ok with that and will take my chances as I should be allowed to do in an open air environment. I get the train travel aspect but I will be travelling as I always do with my family in my car so again, taking my chances and minimising risk.
What is happening imo, is that the VST held by 1110000 people in Scotland is being used by people to have their friends in. This sees large groups of people inside, watching the game, shouting and cuddling, drinking etc with absolutely no controls at all. Is it not safer if that one person goes to the game and the other nine have to go to the pub where protocols are in place or listen in the radio. It doesn’t make sense to me. It’s not to criticise these people because if I was thirty years younger I would be doing the same, no question.
Twists,
I am sad to hear your mum is unwell but hope you can come back on here at some point. I fair miss your craic, especially at stupid o’clock!!

A thing of beauty

Btw
Pilot events for up to 1000 fans still going ahead in league one. If Scotland can also do this it may preserve the lower league game and give an idea of how it can be managed for the larger clubs.

I’m in no doubt that the players miss feeding off the fans energy, think of the big games when we’re a goal down and are chasing the game fans interactions drive the team on. With the ever increasing likelihood of a second lockdown and further restrictions i’m not so sure we’ll have supporters in stadia for a while. It’s simply not the same without fans.

Noel Skytrot

Off topic, but if you have a spare 5 minutes today watch Brendan O’Hara the MSP for Argyll and Bute evisceration of the British Government and British colonialism in the HOP on YouTube. I’m apolitical, but what he states is brilliant.

Big Audio Dynamite

It is absolutely imperative we do not drop anything from our 2 games this week. Thems will be gutted, come Saturday, if the start they have made hasn’t even given them any advantage. They will realise they are gonna have to go some to shake us off. Can they sustain it all season? can they reach 100 points? Well, they NEVER have before!

Bigrailroadblues

Good morning all from Govanhill. Gerrintaethum Celtic!!

Friesdorfer

Good Morning all
Very thoughtful article Mahe, worrying times for everyone including football.

Twisty best wishes for your Mum and family and hope for a good outcome.

I really think our players have missed the away support. Watching football without fans, is like watching a different sport. In fact, if it isn’t Celtic, I’m not remotely interested, as it would bore you to death.

Garry

Good morning Mahe et al.
We are in a real dilemma in society in general at the moment. I am not optimistic that we will see crowds back in stadiums any time soon. We are about to enter cold/influenza season. I feel that pubs and schools reopened too early, and I’m seeing the consequences in my local area of West End Glasgow and West Dunbartonshire. I think the economy in this country is doomed, football will suffer the effects, as all of wider society will. Very pessimistic for our immediate future.
Fancy a similar scoreline to Saturday’s, tonight.

Well done to young Scott Robertson, who helped Gillingham get past Coventry in the League cup.

Garry

BAD
I know that Scott Robertson is very friendly and close to Calmac. I think that SR has followed Calmac’s example of going to Notts County. Hopefully Scott is as successful at Gillingham, and returns from playing in the lower leagues in England, to replicate the success of Calmac at Celtic.
The bhoy is highly talented. High Hopes.

Garry
Fingers crossed for him, mate 👍

Thanks for that Brendan O’Hara speech.
Brendan is a childhood friend of mine. Have travelled to Celtic matches, all over Scotland and Europe with him. A fanatical Tim.
Cheers 👍

Awe Naw,
cheers for putting that up.

Did anyone watch the Montpellier v Lyon game last night?

Turned on thinking Moussa would be playing, he was on the bench along with Depay (Absolute haddy of a fitba player). So, turned over to something else then checked in after half time and Lyon were 2-0 down. Depay (haddy) had come on and the commentator mentioned this could be Depay (haddy’s) last game as he was about to sign for Barcelona, WTF? This would explain their demise – signing haddy’s like Depay.

Anywhoo, Moussa came on about 74 mins in and did absolutely nothing – would be surprised if anyone buys him now.

Right, tea break over, back to work.

Score predictor reminder
St mirren v Celtic tonight..

Mahe

Morning troops.

Chalmersbhoy I will put up a new link for score predictor after I wake up properly.

I dont want the Captain playing tonight, start Turnbull instead. Be very worried if Lenny starts Scott, tells me he will just keep starting him until he drops. Great time to rotate so let’s do it.

Best wishes to Twists mum.

Hail Hail

Mahe

Delighted Ireland has Yankee friends for the Brits would toss us aside as if they had never met us. Make deal with Ireland then we will deal with you they have been told.
Thank the Lord.

Garry

Mahe
If anyone is going to replace Scott Brown in midfield, it should be Soro or Bitton. It is not a role that would suit Turnbull. Think Neil will start the same team as Saturday though.
0-5 to the Leather Belts💪🍀

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, going for 4-0 tonight and hoping for 6, BTW talking of chic young, dont believe a word of it, chic was in my class at st mirrins academy 64 /68, one of the biggest tims on the planet, ok he has got to pretend he is a st mirren fan, rainjurs his second team, to keep his job ,no wee chic is one of us, you heard it here first🙄

Garry

BP
Chic Young was born and bred in Govan, and attended Bellahouston Academy.
One of the biggest huns I have ever kicked about a fitba park. Horrible wee sleekit, like his mates Ally McCoist and Billy Davies.
Detest him. 😠

big packy

GARRY, must have been a different chic young i went to school with😍😍😍

Thetic

If they let fans in to the Celtic Sevco game they better get lots of cops in attendance to arrest all the sectarian singers. It will echo around the stadium with no doubt as to who is singing

big packy

THETIC, the cops will be conducting them😍

Garry

BP
I went to Saint Thomas Aquinas school in Jordanhill Glasgow with a guy called Robert Young, who was a big Saint Mirren fan.
Because of his name, his nickname was Bertie Auld. Funnily enough, his older brother was called Charlie Young. 😊

Garry

Thetic
If supporters are allowed to attend the Glasgow Derby next month? Which I doubt. It will be Celtic supporters only.
As we both know, Celtic supporters do not sing sectarian songs.

big packy

GARRY not THE charlie young i hope😍

Garry

BP
Aye, Charlie Young The Partick Butcher. 😁

big packy

where is jim has he gone down to the larkhall tru blues to watch the game, just like him😍

big packy

GARRY😍

Thetic

Garry I know and you know,we don’t sing the sectarian songs, but it is always ones as bad as the other. Having fans in a stadium that echos would put that theory to bed. I am hopeing it will happen. Remember they did it in an empty stadium in Europe and that was only their official travelling party. And we are still waiting for the results of that investigation. Let them in

Garry

BP
Maybe an afternoon ludge meeting in Larkha’ 😅

big packy

GARRY, glad you said that and not me😍😍😍

Garry

Thetic
They also had a partial ground closure in Europe last season for Racist singing. Maybe you are onto something.
Give ’em enough rope….

We just cant let Broony sit some out can we?
I recall Elvis said he really needed to play or body shut down. Wonder if Captain is the same? Cant and shouldn’t start him every game, 60 odd, plus as soon as he goes out with injury we have an untested line up which isn’t smart long term thinking.
He is a stick on to play against the Hibs, derby game and in Europe, so tonight and this weekend are the ideal time to rest.
He might play great, which would please me dont get me wrong, but succession planning could make the difference this season instead of caught cold when it really matters.
Maybe it’s just me.

And then the changes in general. Is this seen as an experiment game?
Or do we just have 16 or so, a few of whom such as El Hamed flit in and out essentially sharing a position?
Are we back to 442 surely not?

After asking all to trust the coaching team more I must do so myself 😉
Will be logging off with the aim of watching later.
Enjoy your game everybody.

ooopppps – St Mirren take the lead – scrappy goal to lose.
