Help needed at ‘Home’

When talking of Tommy Burns to others I no longer ask did they think he was special, it’s how special was he..
And invariably that question leads to tale after tale, all of which serve to cement his place amongst the legends of our club, and legend is a word I don’t use lightly.
Many of those tales were not football related at all but people related, and many show the qualities of the man.
I doubt there’s anyone that unites the support like Mr. Celtic, that kind of says it all.

Why is he talking about Tommy you may be wondering?
Aside from his lifelong love affair with our club, and a desire to be among and help the common folk of Glasgow, there’s one building that will forever be associated with him.
A deeply religious man, St. Marys of the Calton was the spiritual home of Tommy Burns, and so it was undeniably correct that he was laid to rest from his favoured church.

Being the birthplace of our club, it is little surprise he gravitated to it, a building with many a tale to tell itself. You’ll probably remember not that long ago Canon Tom White was spat on by a passing parade, some 27 DNA samples lifted from his garments yet a single man was charged highlighting the unwillingness to grind wheels of justice even for a man of God in modern day Scotland. The iconic building is the second oldest church in Glasgow, a category A listed building, and has been part of the Celtic story since Walfrid called a meeting in 1887.

And now St Marys needs a little bit of help.

This cursed Virus has affected the world in so many different ways, but perhaps one of the worst is the inability to properly send loved one’s off fittingly.
With this in mind St. Marys decided to undertake creating an outside prayer garden to serve as a permanent memorial to all those who died during the pandemic and had no public funeral.
The plans have been drawn up, and fundraising is well under way, but needs a kick to get over the line.
And that’s where I’m hoping some of us could help.

While understanding many aren’t religious among us, we are all Celtic fans who know how events within those walls have shaped our lives on the outside. Having the opportunity to help St. Marys after all its given us would be an honour and if ever she needs something then the Tims should be right there. And Tommy, I’m sure he would be proud of us all for giving his special place a helping hand. In today’s non stop crazy world, a moment of peaceful reflection in a prayer garden cannot and should not be underestimated.
We will never know how many will sit on those benches looking around seeking something, but in helping get this built we would all be leaving behind our own little legacy, and a hat tip to where it all began.

https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/stmarys-prayer-garden

It may not be the ideal time so please don’t feel under any pressure or obligation, but if you could spare any amount at all to help this worthy project then rest assured it would be appreciated by many.
Thank you.

Great news. My granddaughter is Leah.

Thanks ATOB, Mahe and BMCUWPS for the replies last night.

I didn’t see them until late. Given the nature of the article I’ll leave my reply until over the weekend.

McCaff, No need to apologise. It’s a sensitive topic and it’s positive to have a passionate debate. You are very important to the blog and you’re highly respected here.

Afghan,

I honestly didn’t notice your reply until it was pointed out. No bother at all.

BMCUWPS,

The trawlers worked all the way through lockdown, some kind of exemption. The pubs still aren’t open here, only those that serve food were allowed to reopen.
Pubs outwith Dublin are due to reopen in the next few days. Numbers are increasing in Dublin, more restrictions expected today.

Football fiesta at the weekend. Eight EPL games. The VST for many, including E and hopefully a reversal for Stevie’s Globetrotters.

Cheers, Garry bhoy! Family are all buzzing 👍

Could the efforts of the miners like my grandad, many of whom were parishioners of St Mary’s provide clean energy for the future?

======
I worked as a project engineer on a similar experimental project near Liverpool funded by a very small energy company around ten years ago. Wells were drilled into old flooded coal seams. The water was removed via a Venturi pumping system. Once sufficient water had been removed methane gas from the coal seam was allowed to fill the voids left by the removed water. The methane was recovered and used to power a turbine that produced electricity that was fed into the national grid. Almost 100% green as the recovered brackish water was pumped back into the formation and the turbine was state of the art energy efficient with little by product, apart from water vapour, being released. The biggest issue was the local rich NIMBY’s who continually complained of the noise and light pollution caused during drilling op’s. This despite the closest property being almost a mile from the well site and the company offering to have the complainants property sound insulated to minimise any noise pollution. Drilling ops were very limited and completed in a matter of weeks. When operational the turbine could not be heard more than a few meters away and everything, small office / workshop buildings and well heads, were designed to have minimum visual impact on the surrounding countryside.
Project proved that the idea was feasible and cost efficient but as far as i am aware few of the ‘major’ energy companies were willing to invest in large scale op’s.

DD discussing ‘our Bendan’ and Lenny

“What the fans saw was a Celtic man coming to Parkhead. Brendan brought in his team, a system of playing and the players responded to him. As an ex-Liverpool manager he had gravitas, status. He also had the detail – ‘This is how we want to play’ – which the players took on board. He did a fantastic job and was highly professional in his approach to everything.

“He was approached the previous summer with an unbelievable offer from China. I mean, financially transformational for him. He told me about it. We talked it through and it didn’t come to pass for various reasons. But I knew then that it was always likely he was going to go, because he was undoubtedly going to be offered a more lucrative contract in the future.
“It should be stated that no Celtic player or manager ever earned as much as Brendan Rodgers. He was a quality individual who did a quality job.

“So we had prepared ourselves. We knew it was only a matter of time before clubs would make an offer because he is the commodity every club needs — a first-class manager.

“Lenny was always on our radar. Lenny has been a work in progress for us. He’s been that person we have kind-of tutored and he’s learned along the way. The advice we gave him he’s now realised was good advice, and he’s matured and everybody’s allowed to make mistakes. None of them were fatal.

“So we took him back in even though some of the fans thought it was a retrograde step. But you learn more from mistakes, it can change your personality, your modus operandi. We saw that with Lenny and he has repaid our belief in him.”
==

Errm so if i understand this correctly. Celtic were fully aware that Brendan (” The commodity every club needs — a first-class manager”) was likely to leave and that Lenny ( “A work in progress for us”, “A person we have kind-of tutored”) was the replacement that was ‘on their radar’ to replace the “highly professional” manager with “gravitas & status”😲

PS does that mean John Kennedy is a cert for next shot at the managers job?

Reading back from yesterday. Really poor. Worse than CQN now for stifling discussion.

A thing of beauty

MIT,
I didn’t feel discussion was stifled. McCaff put his point across that he felt the slights he perceives and I do as well at times that those who paid for season ticket were old firm fans. Not so. We are celtic fans who paid to keep out club going and will continue to do so to provide the fan experience we enjoy for our children. There’s nothing wrong with that surely.

Europa league draw

Should Celtic progress past FC Riga, they will be away to Sarajevo or Buducnost Podgorica.
A potential reunion with Sarajevo a year on from defeating them 5-2 on aggregate, including a 3-1 away win.
Buducnost Podgorica, title winners of Montenegro, lost 3-1 at home to Ludogorets in the CL

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, so its riga then, went there once and it was closed, on a serious note if we cant beat riga we should be nowhere near europe,,IMHO of course,

Played for St Mary’s, a hundred year ago, and it’s sad to see it so run down. Walked past (Crownpoint) the other day and the back looks like a building site! My only interest in Churches and Cathedrals is for their architecture, but it would be great to see it restored to something like it’s original state.

Some of these are mind-bending https://youtu.be/OhnydLHX_u4

BAD,

Are they not building the An Gorta Mor Memorial at the back of St Mary’s, which may explain the building site?

I’m sure St Mary’s is one of the richest parishes in the world and, I’ll leave it at that!

Big congratulations, BAD, a wee ray of light in a terrible year.
Just read that an Edinburgh egg chaser has tested positive for Covid after attending a house party with several team mates. His team were due to play in France this weekend and Scotland’s National Clinical Director, Prof. Leitch, condemned the breach but said the game will go ahead.
How does that work? Will wee Nippy read them the riot act? Will she demand their games get cancelled for 2 weeks? Or will she turn a blind eye because it’s her toff friends and not football yobbos?
Like I said when she stopped our test event, if you still don’t know how Scotgov rates you as a football fan, you’ve not been paying attention .🤯

I remember the heat that used to come off the coal bings in my childhood. Many of us have pushed the environment on the long finger but unlike Donald’s assertion it’s unlikely to fix itself.
A similar assertion to his miracle cure for Covid.

Cheers. I wouldn’t say that my former career had a lot to do with saving the planet for future generations. In the main i was employed by major oil companies who at best paid lip service to environmental concerns. I have stood in a jungle in West Africa and watched bulldozers demolish acres of pristine forest just to clear a path for a mobile drilling rig to reach a spot the geologists pinpointed as X marks the spot to drill a well, i have seen oil slicks stretch for miles into the horizon in the North Sea because the leak was deemed to be within allowed levels as well as witnessing mildly radioactive junk from wells just buried in the deserts of Central Asia as it would have cost too much to dispose of the kit properly – etc etc etc. That wee ‘coal bed methane’ recovery project near Liverpool was about the closet i ever came to being ‘green’ in over 2 decades in the oil / energy industry.

Mahe

SFTB,
His fans are mostly getting on I believe its fair to say, which means at most risk. Now the idiot is using his position to spout opinion that goes against his nation’s doctors advice.
Some patriot.
And if his opinion gets even one person sick or worse, he is culpable whether indirectly or not.
A well known asshole, acts an asshole.

Goes for Dermot too.

Mahe

If there was even a 1% chance that DD would leave after winning the 10 (which, frankly, I never believed), that article makes clear the there is 0% chance now; he is, once again, looking to move to the EPL, and will be wanting to be paid accordingly. Using jForbes’ valuation of Liverpool as a guide ($2.1 billion), I’d put Celtic in the EPL at about half of that. But no one is going to pay those rates unless / until a move is imminent. So… DD is going nowhere soon.

More problematic is his, once again, linking Celtic and jRangers in the discussion of any move. A Rangers that hasn’t won a trophy in a decade will be seen as of limited value. So, DD is going to have to help increase jRangers’ value, which means them winning a league or two, and soon….ideally, starting this season.

Mahe

Drizzle in California,, yes!!!

Mahe

MiT,
All sad but true and my heart shrank reading that.
For starters, the Athletic gets more info about Celtic than its lifeblood. How is that acceptable?
Then the continual linking with them goes against our charters disassociate ourselves from bigotry statement.
And then the bigging up Lenny especially plays the Celtic way and fine job at Hibs.
Both crap, but importantly there was never going to be a refutement from that journo.
Wont spout this pish to fans though.
Fuckin Asshole you are Dermot
Proves once again you cant buy class.

Mahe

Also if we are better than Seville demand the club corner the UEFA cup like they have?
Or hold an investigation into why they haven’t.
And its notable he couldnt say Brendan was paid the highest ever. Wonder who that would be .

Im not letting him spoil my Friday even though he tried.
