Sarajevo 0 – 1 Celtic

Morning,all.

The bookies had us at 1/4 for this match, and time proves them right once again. But this was no 1/4 performance, albeit that Sarajevo looked like the 10/1 shots that the bookies had them down as. Make no mistake, this was nail biting stuff from us-mainly because it took us so long to break them down and of course the second goal just would not come either! But in ties like this, the win is what is important, not the manner in which it is achieved. I’m happy enough to settle for that.

Plus,it isn’t as though we played badly. In fact, there were no failures on the pitch for us. Everyone did exactly what was asked of them. So why the negative waves, man? Well, watching the game, with their constant eleven behind the ball and an ability to break at speed, was heart in mouth stuff at times. And for so long,it looked like it would be just one of those nights, the ones we have seen so often in the past. Loads of the ball, can’t break down the defence-though in fairness we had a dozen shots on goal with half of them on target-and left completely frustrated at the end.

Fortunately, that’s not how it turned out. We finally hit them on the counter, with Ryan Christie getting a good shot away from the edge of the area across the keeper. He could only parry it out,and I Wanna was left with the simplest of tap ins. My blood pressure stabilised almost immediately!

Seriously, this was a very difficult tie for us,for all that the “hosts” didn’t really offer a great deal bar defensive resilience. Oh,and a penchant for leaving the boot in when they tackled. This was largely down to a very lenient referee, who did not make a single booking as a result of a tackle. And he had plenty of opportunity to do so. But it would be unfair to criticise Sarajevo for that, they simply played to their strength and the referee allowed it.

But to the game. Firstly,my congratulations to MAHE for calling the team correctly in yesterday’s article. And that meant the return of Eddie after sitting out a few games through injury. This time,it was The Yeti who was injured after Sunday,so needs must. Actually,he looked far from 100% last night, but he answered the call-and how!

Wee Frimpers lined up on the right again, and as usual had two and sometimes three men on him. He tried manfully, and got past them a few times, but the important thing was that it kept drawing them out of shape when he got the ball, and more often than not,we would use that advantage to swing the ball out left where they were short. But in the first half,we just could not penetrate that defence, couldn’t get the ball to drop in the penalty area. We tried low crosses, high crosses, playing it through the middle with one touch, the lot. Half time and we hadn’t landed a blow, while they had had a couple of efforts of their own. In fact, the most notable event in the first half was yet another injury-this time to Nir Bitton who had to come off within the first ten minutes after a crude swipe took him out.

So we regrouped for the second half, and came out firing with a clear intent. We looked much more focused, and we ran that team ragged, pulling them all over the place. I wouldn’t say that it was only a matter of time, but this was a much more purposeful Celtic in the second half. The chances started to come, with Ajer having perhaps the first one, though I doubt that he expected the ball to fall at his feet from six yards. Mo was next with an effort that brought out a decent save, and Christie wasn’t far away with an effort from distance and even Hatem Elhamed managed a cracker which went just wide. Would it come? Hell,yeah-and with twenty minutes to go Eddie got the goal,as described above.

We had another couple of efforts after that, one from Frimpers when he ran across the field while trying to get the ball under control-the pitch apparently hadn’t seen water since the April Showers-and decided to chance his arm from twenty yards, his left foot shot going just wide, and Christie had another shot saved by the keeper. After that, with time running out,Sarajevo pushed as many men forward as they could, but in truth they honestly didn’t look like scoring. And about five minutes into the three minutes of added time, the referee put them out of their misery.

We can probably look back at the qualifiers as a chance missed after the Ferencvaros debacle, but when we got our second chance we took it. Two awkward away ties duly negotiated, and the players and manager deserve credit for that at least. The group’s are drawn tomorrow at High Noon, and it looks like we will be seeded in Pot One. Now,there’s a first!

No Man of the Match for this one,I’m afraid. We were uninspiring as a team in the first half, but won it as a team in the second half. That’s another thing I can settle for, quite happily.

I never saw the match but listened to it on the tranny. It sounded like a repeat of the Riga game. As for the draw, I wouldn’t be surprised if we are drawn with Leicester in the group.

Last night was a job done performance. Hoping for a favourable draw at noon today. Pray we get an effective left wing back signed before midnight on Monday. Greg Taylor is a trier, but clearly not a good enough player to be successful at Celtic. The jersey does not shrink….

Big Audio Dynamite

Garry, I get zero pleasure from saying it, but, Greg is among the worst Celtic players I can think of ever seeing! He tried a pass last night to Eddy, that was so bad me & the wee man just looked at each other and shook our heads. So timid it is maddening. He actually looks scared.

Hope he somehow comes good 👍

Now being linked with a move for Juve FB Mattia De Sciglio. This is one transfer we want to get spot on!

Rhiannon Brewster signs for Sheffield United for £23.5m PLUS add-ons. That’ll be the guy who has scored precisely ZERO goals in ZERO league appearances for Liverpool. Madness, though I wish him well.

Morning all and Packy.

Well I enjoyed that a lot better than the Riga game. Not quite as good as the Hibs match, but a lot of that is to do with the style of play of our opposition. There seemed to be a bit more keenness and urgency by Celtic especially in the 2nd half.

Onwards and upwards. It would be a laugh if we got Leicester, would be a Karma moment if we were to beat our ex manager who left us in such a poor manner. I wonder if he would still be so ‘Celtic minded’!

To be in pot 1 is good news.

Garry

BAD
I said to both my sons last night that Greg Taylor is like a rabbit caught in headlights now. They were less complimentary. I think the lad has lost all confidence in himself, and looks terrifed. Urgent replacement needed, if we are to succeed in Europe this season. I watched 19 year old Alphonso Davies at Bayern against Dortmund on Wednesday night. The difference in standard between him and 23 year old Greg Taylor is startling.

I hope we avoid Leicester and they are drawn with the huns group. I think Leicester City would destroy us and the tribute act.

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

I’ve seen a lot worse left backs than Greg Taylor in my time watching Celtic. His final ball last night wasn’t up to the usual this season, but he rarely got caught in possession and was always available for the pass.

Covers back a lot quicker now these days too,and made a few vital interceptions last night, and on Sunday too. He isn’t KT,nor Izzy either, but he’s the best we have and we could do with supporting the lad.

Btw,I understand that I’m unlikely to get much agreement on here with my view, and that’s fine. It’s a blog-and I don’t think I’ll even get much agreement from my family about it!

jimthetim53

Garry, yip that would probably be better – if they got them! LOL 🙂

Looks like a very hard Group and, as usual, the Huns get it easy (on paper).

During the Draw they were jumping pots due to same league thing. Then Milan came out and were put into our Group H, Granada came out later and were put into Group E with no Italian teams in it, so, why weren’t Milan put into Group E?

I HATE EUROPEAN FITBA….

A Greenock man is down the Celtic social club on a Friday night and buy’s a raffle ticket.

Lo and behold, he scoops first prize, and the prize is a camel……..

“Whit the hell am I gonnie dae with a camel?” he asked his pal.

“camels are rerr hings mate, they eat aw yir grass and shite on yir plants, you’ll never need to do any gardening again!”

So, the guy finishes his beer and starts to think how he can explain this camel to his wife. He chucks a rope around the camels neck and walks off to the bus stop to wait on the Braeside bus.

The bus pulls up and the driver points to a big sign ‘NO PETS ALLOWED’

Brainwave: “I’ll just ride it up the road” he says to himself.

So while he’s heading up the road, he gets to Barr’s Cottage and thinks to himself that he can get last orders in.

So he jumps off his camel and ties it to the railings and goes upstairs at Barr’s Cottage for a couple of swift halfs.

He comes out later and the camel’s away.

”Some wee skank fae the Bow Road must hae stole it” he thinks to himself.

So he phones the Polis and after the usual half hour wait they arrive.

“Right pal, geez a description o’ this camel, wis it a Sahara Desert wan?” asks the big Polis.

“nae idea said the guy, am a welder in Kincaids, av no got a clue aboot camels”

So the Polis asks’, “many humps did it huv on its back then?”

So the wee guy replies, ” Telt you big yin, av nae ideas aboot they camel hings, the only thing I know is that the camel wis female.”

The Polis then asks him to explain how he knew it was a female.

“Well when i wis riding it up the road I passed a bus stop and I heard a bloke sayin tae his mate, “check oot the fanny on that camel”

Morning folks and hope all are well on this first Friday in October.
God bless all those with health issues or less fortunate than ourselves.

Bobby, my match review wouldn’t read like that tbh.
First thirty was a feeling out process after which we seemed to realise they are essentially another SPL team that arent very good and will park the bus.
Around 30 mins mark we started going for it a bit more.
Second half seen us come out and turn the screw knowing we were the better team.
A goal was always coming and so it proved.
Knowing that was enough and desperate to avoid a slip up we simply accepted a single goal was fine and that was that.
Was never in doubt in this mind.

I would say Frimps probably for MOTM, he should be first name on the team sheet now and James is no longer first choice ah well.

Taylor isn’t as bad as I think some are making out to be but I thought it was noticeable he was trying to hit byline and cross, something we dont tend to do.

All in all I thought it was a professional performance that we can take a bit of heart and some experience from.

The group,, we will probably be seen as favourites to come last, anything above that would be hard to come by but no doubt we will try.

Hail Hail

The Gdańsk stadium for the final, only holds 41,000 .. So based on Seville, that will be 40,000 Celtic fans and 1,000 for our opponents. Any other split would be completely unreasonable.😀

Oh and another 500,000 outside for our 10 In a Row party .. We can always dream and live in hope ..

The draw shows that Pots are immaterial, how can a Pot 1 Club get a team from Pot 4,sitting second in one of Europe’s best leagues? Only a small safeguard to stop all the top clubs being drawn against each other

Oglach

Fair assessment of the game last night Bobby. But was i alone in thinking that we made FC Sarajevo look like a semi decent team! All our huffing and puffing and domination of the ball and all we had to show was 1 goal – Eddy right place right time after a bit of a howler from their keeper who parried a shot straight at our French striker. Hey ho irrespective of another disappointing performance, imo that is, we are through to the group stages and another tough group – just for a change.

Should our level of performance against AC Milan, Sparta or Lille mirror that of last nights i fear we are in for some severe pumping’s.

Obviously Nir & Big Julie being injured means that we will now be playing Elhamed in our ever changing defensive line up but just who will be on the bench for the next few games, seems we may have no defenders left?

PS how about Calmac at LB – might work🤔😆😆😆

The Cry was no defenders CSC

Also not forgetting Zlatan Ibrahimovic Vs Shane Duffy, Kris Ajer and Jullien – coming to a TV screen near you 🙄😯

Oh and if we do get to Gdańsk can we please win it this time ..

And for those of you who think I mad, and we all are a bit, I was standing in with the Bauer Leverkusen fans at Hampden 2002 Champions League Final with a Hoops top on ..

Anyway at half time, I said a wee prayer that please could I get to go to a European Final with Celtic playing .. Following year I’m standing in the Olympico Stadium in Seville saying thank you that my prayer had been answered ..

I had however forgot to ask in my prayer for a Celtic win, my prayer was just to see Celtic play in a European final.

What can I say, God does listen.

Just before my second cup of tea of the day, a thought occurred! Perhaps I should treasure the moment because they are rare.

How do we form opinions? In particular, how do we form opinions about individual players, like GT, and about how the team performed? OK, these are very big questions…too big to answer in a blog post, at least, one of my posts.

Let’s take just one contributor to our opinions…..confirmation bias. How big a part does that play? I like to think that I have an open mind….that I hear all the arguments and then make up my mind on a player, or a team. But, I am aware that my existing feelings always have some influence on my final opinion.

Take GT for example. I was pleased when we signed him. I thought he was a developing player with Kilmarnock and that we should snap him up before he moved South. He was a key part of the Killie defence. After he arrived I was puzzled why he was not picked to play…..not given a chance, especially when Boli was obviously an accident waiting to happen…….frequently out of position and over hitting crosses into the box. Then Greg got his chance and, in my view, initially he did well. His positioning was better than Boli; he could tackle somewhat, and he could cross behind a defence. So, I thought a fine replacement for KT….and he will grow(as a player). Confirmation bias at play?

After a few games, I notice some issues……constantly passing the ball backwards or horizontally; not taking on the FB and getting to the by line; more often than not having crosses blocked; performing a faint every time he got the ball but never acting on it. My opinion changed as did my expectations of what he could contribute. Even when he did provide assists, I saw these as exceptions to his play. Again confirmation bias.

So, what is my point? It is simply this a) our confirmation bias affects all of our opinions about players, managers, and performance; b) it takes a heck of a lot of evidence and counter argument to change our opinions that are influenced by confirmation bias.

Some on here opine that GT had a good game last night, others thought he was average to poor. I wonder how many of these opinions were merely the reflection of previously held views of Greg? Each of us should ask that question of ourselves.

I did not mentioning coaching even once!
