It took a foreigner,,,

So the talks to have EPL teams bail out the lower leagues have not been progressing well, the two sides are 200 million apart at the moment.
The top flight wish to hand over 50 million to the other professional leagues but they want five times that.
And finally someone spoke some sense and wouldnt you just know it was a foreigner, clearly not schooled in the English way of things.
Or perhaps he doesnt give a toss for them.

But Wednesday the Man City chief executive told the truth, as unpalatable as it may have been to some, and to be frank he deserves a huge pat on the back for his speaking up for if it brings any degree of sanity to the English game then he is worth his weight in gold.

” Why should we give you cash when your model is unsustainable?
You need reform, not money!”
Or something similar in business talk but the chap with no regard for the history or homes of those holding the begging bowl made his point in very succinct fashion.

Every bit of his argument is true and with the Championship spending 107% of turnover on wages, a restructure is incumbent not something to be pondered over to be whilst squandering the next round of family silver.

It will take a while to see how many heed his call, if the snowball becomes an avalanche, and if this becomes a top flight lower leagues stand off.
But just as the cops don’t believe in coincidences, when taken alongside Dermots comments, it must be said that there is something afoot.

Our wise friend MIT is always quick to point out that if and when our majority shareholder talks to the media, it’s because he has something to say or a point to get out there.
“Rangers are a great club” is a case in point in that he was going on the record attaching ourselves to the ‘still ongoing’ Old Firm rivalry.
So to hear Dermot speak of restructuring the footballing pyramid down south, and then the same message echoed is simply too much of coincidence to be shrugged off.

The last time DD smelt entry was when Bolton stood up and backed us. We now know why that was, on Boltons behalf they were a basket case but EPL2 offered a glimmer of hope. It didn’t happen then and they collapsed ironically aided by our ‘prodigal son’.

But now we have a different kettle of fish altogether. This is no basket case seeking something, anything, to aid survival but these are serious players, the biggest spenders in the biggest league on average over the last while.
They are the most visual, high profile club yet to call for a pyramid shuffle.

And that’s where we come in.
We do have a cosy relationship with them, well documented, so again this strengthens the belief we could be part of a reshuffle.
A man who only speaks with a message sees that message echoed aloud by his powerful friend?
You would think he knew what was coming.

As mentioned Dermots tag team partner this time has clout and the wedge to back it up, and it’s clear they dont like what they see. He likes the idea of colt teams but it will take more than that to sell an EPL 2.
It would take a collapse of some segment of the game, and leave a rejig necessary.
That grows closer every day the Prem say Nah we aren’t funding your splurge as we aren’t allowed one.
It also grows closer every day there are no significant crowds allowed.
If I didn’t know better I would swear the majority shareholder of our club of choice smells an opportunity here, and when a hole appears in the dyke up north, himself and friends will be down south knocking on the EPL door with a smile and oven ready deal.

I’m aware Boris couldn’t deliver an oven ready deal, but make no mistake Dermot and Park/Douglas/Whoknows could.
The Old Firm derby and all that it entails would be on the table, all yours for the going television rights rate per annum and not only that available instantly with no three year leaving period as the game up north went tits up (because we don’t pony up to lower leagues just like City down south) leaving whilst there’s major rebuilding necessary alas we decided to move on but can supply a Colts to help out the lads at home.
So long and thanks for all the fish Scotland (name that movie below)!!!

It’s been long clear this has been the Dubliners dream, to dine at the top table of football, but it is yours?
On the one hand we know entry to that league brings a degree of sanity in that FFP protocols are actually adhered to and the allocated referee shall not on paper have any allegiance to either team involved, something we should not celebrate but expect, a sad indictment of Scottish game.

We also know we would at last be in the position to wipe the smirk off many ‘drunk on Tv money’ average club supporter like say,, most of them.
I’m sure you’re the same in that almost every fan of a ‘high profile’ English club you’ve had a beer with thinks we would get relegated.
“Fodder”
“Down first season”
“Embarrassed”
And this despite the results of modern day clashes don’t bear out the theory they imagined.

Finally joining the top tier of football gives us a real shot to do something I always dreamed of, adding another star. My father God Bless his soul watched us earn that first star the right way and spoke in awe of what he had witnessed.
To add another would be a dream come true personally, like father like son, and only a higher platform than where we reside offers that opportunity in this day and age.
The higher the level of scrutiny should in theory help lower the level of violence and division in the city of Glasgow also, I might be wrong but I believe there are minimal incidents surrounding EPL games and with the money at stake plus keeping your reputation clean for signings, maybe just maybe songs of hate and violent clashes would become a thing of the past, once there is a new actual sheriff in town that don’t take no crap. For real.

Howevaaaa,
The flip side is look what you are leaving behind.
Without fail the visits to Swinecastle are my favourite away trips of the year, that narrow high sided throwback cauldron simmering with sectarian-based hate resulting in what might not actually legally qualify in a court of law as sport nevermind the eel masquerading as an impartial official.
Then there’s Pittodrie with its beautiful drive up and stadium view, plus Big Packy swears on the way back is the best fish supper going.

Nothing like putting Killie in their box the shower of, and a cup tie to Abroath or Brechin is always a welcome day oot!
You will have your own favourite and possibly second and third.
But that’s the point, its home, all these opponents just roll off the tongue and all these games just speak of home sweet home.
There’s historic game after historic game between many of the teams up north, so do we really want to break that chain, because make no mistake leaving would and I haven’t even mentioned Brexit or future Indy ref yet, more huge spanners in the works.

I’ve written before how none of us should foist our vision of what we believe Glasgow Celtic is upon others, that we are a broad church and as such we all must be accommodated when making huge decisions regarding the clubs future.
But yet we aren’t.
This looks like it will be pushed through without consultation just as embracing Sevco was.

I firmly believe this would be the wrong thing to do, and that the support be listened to before any move of league.
It’s much too important an issue and like Brexit, when its done its done,,you have left and you ain’t coming back.

Thanks for the reply last evening Mahe,

Very insightful lead, I wasn’t aware of Man City’s utterences (thanks for the link) but they make perfect sense, as what I do know is the Championship finances are crazy. Also, many Clubs have very wealthy owners.

Interestingly enough my local team Wycombe Wanderers got promoted to the Championship this season. Fans looked forward to the extra splurge the higher income would mean.

Yet reality happened, no supporters at Adams Park, no cash injection. Wanderers’ American owners decided to cut their cloth, it means of course not only have they not secured a single point in the league so far, they haven’t scored a single goal but the consensus seems to be… at least we’ll be here next season.

Sensible post of their facebook group… it also has the Championship wage turnover league table.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/2216399463/permalink/10158711821434464/?sfnsn=scwspmo

Topped by Reading who had a wage to turnover ratio of 226%

Due to the then predicted intervention from the EPL, the wealth of the owners of some Championship clubs and the pragmatic approach by others, I felt the predicted collapse of the league wouldn’t happen. However if Man City’s lead is anything to go by, then a restructuring is definitely on the cards.

How do I feel about Celtic and the old firm in the restructured EPL? I’m not at all sure.

If it happens I’ll get to go to many more games, that’s for sure, but what will it mean for Celtic?

Well it could well dilute the Glasgow bigotry yet as our friendly with Sunderland a couple seasons back showed, there are enough right wing nut jobs in “English Football” who would see Celtic as a target.

Also any idea of fan ownership would be permanently lost.

And, as we have discussed, the idea of “more than a Club” would be acceded into the PLC model.

Yet we would get our Stadium re-vamp, our Hotel, possibly our Museum as Celtic Park becomes an attraction in and of itself.

We could compete at the highest level in Britian and as you say Europe. Is that what we want?

I think what my ideal would be, to stay in Scotland with fan ownership, the model Fergus advocated, yet what are the chances? More chance of Wycombe scoring a goal.

The PLC have outmanoeuvred the fanbase, and as discussed yesterday, the support either don’t know or they don’t care how and why they operate, so… I’m for moving on, if the old firm can make the restructured EPL a British League I’m fine with it… the bloody nose of the SPFL and SFA will just make it sweeter.

Oh and the movie…

Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy…

I live overseas so I will be looking in from afar, with the odd trip home if I am lucky. Tickets will cost a lot more and be harder to get ,and it is also making it a rich supporters event. If the move also includes Aberdeen, a Dundee City, an Edinburgh City rep either new or amalgamated teams , in one of the leagues I would vote for it.
The SPFL cannot support or prop up the amount of teams in Scotland I don’t want anything to do with Sevco lets hope they Liquidate again before it happens if it does happen.

m6bhoy

Sorry guys but I just don’t see the link between this guy’s comments and an invitation to join the EPL. Yes, he may be half-suggesting an EPL2 but the likely outcome of that would be a smaller EPL1 where teams like Bournemouth and Burnley are permanently excluded. Also, the bigger EPL teams have their eyes more focussed on a bigger pan-European competition than playing Celtic or The Rangers every season. Lastly, why would these teams want more competition to their near monopoly where the top six take turns about to get access to the Champions League largesse? To introduce another two competitors into the mix just doesn’t make any sense from their perspective. We are deluding ourselves if we think moves may be afoot to sneak the Old Firm/Glasgow Derby brand into the English Premiership. Neither Celtic nor The Rangers are on their radar and of course defeats to the likes of Ferencvaros and Cluj don’t exactly help.

GER57

I also hae ma doots that the Man City CEO is hinting that there might be an opening for us to enter the English pyramid at top level. Even if true, I don’t think I want that for Celtic. Often times on here and CQN, I’ve stated my opposition to Celtic paying players £100k+ per week, even more if we want to reach the very top. What makes us that bit extra special is the emotional link between players and fans: when we roar on the team, and they respond and do something special, like Barcelona, it’s a magical experience.
Anyway, having access to the Sky tv cash doesn’t guarantee success. Clubs have spent tens of millions and still got relegated. How confident can we be that our manager/ coach/ directors will spend such bounty wisely? Our club’s biggest asset is the fan base, but it’s not just a source of cash, it’s the emotional dunt that transmits both ways between fans and players. Incomers to Celtic, foreign and domestic, can respond to that emotion and buy into Celtic, and become legends, like Henri and Broonie. Others can’t or won’t “get it”.
I think we’d struggle to maintain this bond as a big player on the corporate stage. PSG are one of the elite teams now. They were founded in 1971;no history to speak of, no grandas to tell stories of old heros, and spoiled superstars who are money grabbing anti heros. Who wants to be like them?
No, I’d far rather Celtic stayed in Scotland and fight to reform our game. The big issue here is to stop the ingrained institutional bias towards the club/ holding co from Ibrox. They are doing their damnedest to crash again, and many on here have moaned loudly at the board’s supine response to their antics.
Also, I think there would be downright hostility towards Celtic from a few English club fans, especially if our away fans’ songbook gets aired. Indeed, the bulldog element amongst them would support the Huns.
I’m with Mahe. I want Celtic to be a fan owned club, in Scotland. We won’t be a major force in Europe, but with careful use of our resources we could be regular CL group stage players, with the odd foray after Christmas. With a bit of luck, we could maybe go deep into the EL. For me, that’s success.

Very interesting article Mahe. It’s a naw for me. We are a Scottish club with Irish roots, and it should stay that way, imo, with as much fan involvement as possible.

“maybe just maybe songs of hate and violent clashes would become a thing of the past”
==

Songs of hate from who exactly? 🤔

And it’s a big no from me. Said it before any remaining vestige of who we are supposed to be and who we are supposed to represent would be lost. Also if a move to England helps us try and emulate the Lions of 67 and win the big cup again wouldn’t the same be true of Sevco FC? Now what ‘Celtic’ supporter would want that? I’ll have an educated guess and say 1 – DD himself. Me i’d rather poke out my own eyes with a fork than watch that happening just so DD could increase his bank balance and let’s be honest that is exactly what a move to England would be about. And just because the English leagues may be agreeable to the OF joining them at some juncture in the future would UEFA allow it? If Celtic and Sevco can join why not Ajax or Club Brugge, just where would you draw the line ?

Very interesting article Mahe. I hadn’t heard about this.

Having taken some time to consider my response to this, and whether I want to see Celtic in the EPL, I have now come down on the side of “nope, its not for me!”

I see Celtic as something magical – it means, and should stand for much more than a business venture.

The following comment from the Man City guy leapt out at me ” The team is the engine of our business – if we don’t play good football, we have no business”. This comes from the same stable as the following comment by DD after WGS had won three in a row: “Gordon has done very well, both on and off the balance sheet”. This comment sent a shudder through me. My response was ” is that my Celtic he’s talking about? He made the fitba team sound like an offshoot of some commercial venture. It was at that moment I realised with great sadness that this was precisely how he views it and why I’d like him gone.

All that said, the status quo is not a great strategy going forward. As things stand, we could soon see a quintuple treble, 10 in a row and in a few seasons we too are “going for 55″ except in our case of course we actually ARE! All fine in the short term but is this model really sustainable in the medium to long term? Are Adidas and others going to continue to pump millions into what as Kevin Bridges said was ” a two horse race where one of the horses pulled up lame!” I don’t think so.

So, we definitely need an exit strategy. I’m more in favour of an Atlantic League scenario with 18 clubs of a similar stature battling it out for 4 CL places. As we’ve seen yet again this season clubs like Celtic are scrambling around for crumbs from the table of the Big Five who all get 4 automatic places. Surely, that can’t continue indefinitely? Its becoming a closed shop and surely must ultimately affect viewing figures which is the Holy Grail for UEFA.

So, I do think that change is inevitable, I just don’t think that the EPL is the right solution for us.

The Ryan Christie situation is farcical, if you or I tested negative, you would be back at work, footballers are among the most protected and tested in the country

Nir Bitton has done himself no favours by opting to play for Israel last night. He has admitted he will be in trouble should he not be fit enough for selection for the game against Sevco. He is apparently ‘feeling his ankle injury post game’. If he doesn’t make the game then, imo, he has probably burnt a lot of bridges at Celtic and it could be adios in Jan!

A thing of beauty

Oglach 1.24pm
My thoughts exactly. I could not believe it when I saw Bitton playing. Even says he realises Celtic pay his wages but went against the advice of the club and played anyway. Sorry but that just undermines the manager even further. Twice now this season players have been unfit to play for us but fit for their national team. I think the players need to show the manager more respect.
As for the article. Sorry, but complete pie in the sky. Turkeys don’t vote for Christmas so I don’t even consider whether I would want us playing in England or Scotland. It’s as realistic as me getting a game next week against the Huns.

The Gombeen Man

I hear John Beaton is the MiB for the Sevco game.

Mahe,

Of all the attacks on Dermot here the insinuation that he’s a Jackeen is beyond the pale.
He might of been raised in Marino but he’s a Macroom man.

His County jersey is the ‘Blood and Bandage(s)’.

Have you ever crossed swords anyone from The People’s Republic of Cork?

What part have the owners of Manchester City played in the financial pollution of the English game?
The ban from participating in the CL was overturned but weren’t they fined €10m for obstructing the investigation and wasn’t the notorious Time Bar brought into play?
I’m not sure how sustainable the City Balance Sheet has been without the creative infusion of oil money via sponsorship?

I’d imagine that many would argue that the circumvention of FFP in England hasn’t helped to stabilise football’s long term financial model?

Dermot’s a Value Investor, uncertainty or a Bear Market is his speciality.
The EPL or some kind of allegiance with top tier English clubs would suit him perfectly.
That’s one of the reasons why the PLC are closely associated with Unionism.

It’s one of the main reasons Lindsell Train came onboard any talk of their Celtic product getting access to a more lucrative market will suit them perfectly.

See Nick Train’s comments, “Monetising the Scottish Catholic Diaspora.”

In the unlikely event of anything happening, Old Firmism would be to the fore. Both sets of customers would be clamouring to hand over their credit card numbers across Hadrian’s Wall.

To snap up those those VSTs and support their illusory “Cause, Calling & Culture.”

At which point Dermot will offload his shares in the Old Firm to the highest bidder from wherever.

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, my take on celtic and rangers coming down here, would love it but it wont happen, too much sectarian baggage involved,, i lived in liverpool for 10 years before moving up here to cheshire, in liverpool alone there are over 100 orange lodges and in manchester blackburn oldham and stockport combined, probably the same number, and believe you me they share the same anti catholic and anti irish bigotry as their scottish counterparts, remember rangers playing everton in a friendly game about 10 years ago, they tried to attack st anthonys catholic church in scotland road the oldest catholic church in liverpool,, then had a go at the irish centre ,oh and i forgot to mention abusing a young nun who was just walking past,,no ghuys its not worth it, seeing the tricolour would be like a red rag to a bull to the northern english bigots, not forgetting the neo nazis,, the rainjurs would be okay flying the butchers apron all over the place, only problem being they would destroy every town in england,,and thats a true story.H.H.

Former Celtic youth player Liam Morrison has been named as one of the best youngsters in the world by the Guardian, just a year after leaving Celtic to join Bayern Munich ??????????

That must be some set up the Germans have! From a decent young prospect to one of the best young players in the world in one year🤔

Oglach,

That would bear out some of Man City’s point about B Teams in the EFL…(Mahe’s attached article from Football 365).

“There are other problems, the challenges of developing players in England where B teams are not allowed, we have a development gap of boys that are 17 or 18, they don’t find the right place to develop and for example they are taken from us by the German teams who try to sell them back to us for a price which is 10 times what they paid.”

How many shares can you sell in a 9yo football club? Is there not a point at which they become worthless? According to Ssevco fanzine writers like Jack, it’s always “Investment”(Htf do you function properly when you have his job description?) So, what is really going on here?

With everyone rightly worried if their club will survive this, people like Jack know the horde have to be kept onside, with stories of massive Investment and Jack Wilshire ‘s VHS tape collection of Brian Laudrup’s greatest Rangers games. Chris, without even a hint of a smirk, wrote last week about the time “Bongani Zungu left Mo Salah in tears”. Our sports press are an utter embarrassment.

Noel Skytrot

The Daily Radar has posted an article about AC Milan and how they could be in financial peril due to running at a loss for a few years. The huns are doing the exact same but not a peep. Scottish sports journalism is a joke.

Morning folks.
Bloody nightmare of a morning here but it could have been much worse.
Hamish got attacked by a Pitbull or Staff as we were out walking pushing baby stroller and all.
I keep a knife for emergency locked up in a compartment of stroller.
I grab knife and figure I’m about to start stabbing this bassa, who is clearly going for the neck to lockjaw him, when Hamish gets free and bolts, taking off in the direction of home.
So its out of my hands then.
We make it back home double quick to find he beat the attacker home and wife let him inside.
Attacker dog running around our garden.

He didn’t outrun that mutt he was dead.
Wife not at home he might not have made it.
That dog gets out again and it will kill anything else it can catch with four legs, and maybe move onto two legs if crazy enough.

Eff me. Im only starting to calm down now.
Have owners address and phone number, wife is on the case. It can’t happen again will be our message.

DD doesn’t give a f about Celtic. DD, whom I have spoken to, says his rationale about investing in Celtic is that he fully understands what Celtic means to the supporters both in Scotland and Ireland. He said he will always bail Celtic if they are in financial trouble but doesn’t see it as his role to invest in marquee players but to ensure that Celtic are safe financially. I don’t have a problem with his position. I disliked his comment about the Huns but he is a business man looking to maximise the opportunity for Celtic.
