The definition of insanity

Repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting different results is the definition of insanity I’ve heard it said. With that in mind I tried to put myself in Lenny’s shoes at the moment and asked just what would I do right now.
Would I introduce a new look Celtic side, switch out half the team, or mark Saturday down as a bad day at the office for that 11 ?
Neil Lennon has faced many big decisions in his time with the club, but what to do next must rank up there as the biggest decision yet.

Go down fighting is another old saying, one that most of us will probably agree with.
It’s the best option Neil has I think and it’s exactly what I would do if in his role.
It might also buy him a bit of time if needed.
After a very abject performance any manager in any league is faced with the option of stick or twist. After a one off bad performance the same eleven absolutely deserve the chance to show it was a blip, and good teams always have a backlash performance right away to make sure a single defeat is only that and nothing more serious.

But we haven’t looked like a good team in a long time though.
So with Pittodrie in mind rather than the Milan game, which will take care of itself, should we trust the same group to gell and produce a back on track performance?
Or would that be the definition of insanity and push Neil closer to the door?
I believe it would be the latter and as such would ring the wholesale changes, to be honest I don’t see much other choice when the usual suspects are marching you out of a job.
In that case what have you got to lose?

From the supporters perspective a totally revamped team is always interesting and at least we wouldn’t be sitting here thinking how does he expect different results with the same players?
In theory those drafted in from the outskirts of the squad and given a chance in the first team should play out of their skin to impress and at least stay in the mix, and the opposite is also theoretically true that dropped first teamers should up their game now they have serious competition.
When one also adds the simple fact that the opposition manager can’t prepare tactics for this new look side considering no one knows how they will play yet, and therefore his players are less prepared than normal, then maybe mass change is a no brainer.

Many of the support would applaud the fact underperforming players eventually saw the bench after what they perceived as a totally lackless performance when the opposite was needed.
It was last Christmas when the gaffer went to Dubai with similar problems that he hit upon a new formation, realising that a deep drifting Eddy needed another striker ahead of him to play in, he alone holding up was not going to win the league. It’s exactly that type of analysis and thinking the manager needs to find right now with the aim of saving his job,, tinkering during the Christmas break would be wishful thinking at this stage.

In my humble opinion first and foremost we need some solidity, some strength, the ending of feeling vulnerable, a base to build upon. That’s either four at the back or if sticking with three, then equally three of the midfield five must form a solid screen in front of them.
With the defense being new plus short on numbers it naturally falls to the midfield then to be the ‘you shall not cross’ line in the sand.
Broony Calmac and Ryan have been granted the starting berths and expected to screen but that must end, much too easy to play against, cant hold a solid line and they have been sussed now. The first two couldn’t help getting passed around at the weekend. Fan-a-tic has often stated he thinks they are the root of our problem.
We need to bring the fringe midfielders in now.
These include Dembele, Turnbull, Rogic,Soro, Henderson, Connell, and Mikey Johnson.
I know I’m not alone on the blog in thinking big Kris Ajer could do a job in his previous role and as such his name should come into the mix as should Nir Bitton.
Again what does Lenny have to lose by offering some a run of games?
I know exactly what he will get if he doesn’t, more of the same. See the title.

Could we treat Europe as the testing ground for Sunday SPL games, handing out chances galore effectively writing it off as glorified practice sessions with the aim of seeing who exactly has what?
You will have your own answer but if that’s what it takes to bring home the tenth and we weren’t going to win it anyway, then it’s a yes from me plus that would make it exciting rather than nerve racking. I certainly don’t think we should see the same team fielded twice this week, I would keep many fresh for the Aberdeen game, Broony in particular if he is nailed on to play.

Most importantly we need some new tactics to give to these players, as now we know the current system more than likely won’t bring home the title again, and will only increase calls for Neils head. Time to go to the well again Lenny, get the thinking cap on and the drawing board out, concoct some magic formula for us.
Two up front saved the day last year, big lesson there.
We never again start games without two real strikers, the two who manage to gel will automatically start is a good rule to promote internal competition.
The two (or three) up top need to run channels a lot, not get in each other’s zones, form an understanding, plus look to provide the supporting midfielders if their partner isn’t free or best positioned.
To be stationary must become a cardinal sin, to be aware of the others position as natural as breathing.

Of course we need to get the ball to these strikers to let them put it in the net.
You wont need me to tell you this is sadly lacking with our backwards and sideways play, ironically what the gaffer himself did in the Hoops a lot. With that in mind the choice is to bypass midfield, play down the wings and into box, or creative midfielders providing through balls, or a mix of all three of course.
Wing play has just not worked for us this season, Frimps and Forrest too easy to nullify and it was noticeable our rival sets up to double team the bhoy on the wing. That avenue looks unfruitful.
Creative midfielder with through balls, hasn’t happened so far. There’s an argument to say we have them, but there’s a counter argument to say it would be folly to play that style. From one quarter of the league pitches being artificial grass that isn’t conducive to silky play, to we cannot rely on Tom Rogic full time (which has been shown), to the hammer throwers will just identify our skillful players and hack them out of the game leaving us toothless, there is no doubt endorsing this system would carry a massive risk.
Bypassing the midfield may be the lesser of three evils, looks the best option currently where I’m sitting. Again, what does Lenny have to lose plus no one will bitch about the style if it delivers the league.

Now that we know for certain clubs are discussing what to do in the event of curtailment due to Covid-19, the old saying leagues aren’t lost in October goes out the window. Winning a league in March, April or May might just be wishful thinking and as such points per game take on much more importance. This means we can’t have a purple patch, must stick the pace and be thereabouts if we have title ambitions. This might be a curse or a bonus but there is very little time to either feel sorry for ourselves or stick with a starting eleven that’s not cutting the mustard. The strong possibility of a shorter than usual season must force Lenny’s hand to act sooner rather than later.
Good.
Its time for a revamped Celtic side.

Put the big Norwegian Shield in the midfield that will be a good start. All the talk about the young guy when we signed him was how lucky we were to get him ,his potential was on a trajectory to the top. As a midfielder? We changed him and would you say he is still on that trajectory take him and put him where he is comfortable. Give the opposition a mountain to scale to get at our backfield.
And scare the shit out of defenders as he steams towards them

Celtic have not been a good team since Brendan Rodgers left and the reason for the demise of the team is because Brendan Rodgers left . Sure there was some Rodgers momentum left for the end of the 2018-2019 season and completion of a treble treble. However, by the beginning of last season it was obvious the shine had come off a bit and lawwelism had reared its ugly head again and a spawny league cup win gave a in-dogs years generation of domination drivel it’s swan song. If it wasn’t for the Huns busting a financial lung at the beginning of the year and another stroke of luck with covid busting a million other lungs Celtic were awarded the pre emptive title much to the chagrin of the manky mob but it was good while it ended. But now we are in deep doo doo. The club is in a definite malaise and it’s all gone tits up. The Fido generation of domination is over. The board are crafting their escape routes poor Lenny is left holding the dead baby and the players don’t respect him. Meanwhile the Huns are starting to rake it in. Well done DD. Thanks. Visionary. Or as I would say a greedy megalomaniac wanker. Can you go fuck off now and play w/some EPL team and take that Lawwell cunt with you. Your days are over.

Tough weekend. But the ream hasn’t played well for a while, and has definitely regressed since BR left. Secco have improved in that time to the point where their 451 formation ties our 352 in knots. I still believe we have better players, but they seem to be better coached with a system that they are comfortable playing.
So, does Lenny rehash the team, or is he the issue? How many in the squad don’t really want to be there? We won’t find out till someone writes a book in a few years.
From a position of unparalleled superiority to getting our arses skelped in less than 18 months. WTF?

GER57

Mane, I’m sure that this season will be curtailed and points per game will settle the title. We need to make sure we are no distance behind when the music stops.
It puts even more pressure on the next Glasgow derby.

Morning all…
Ger57, there will be no reason to stop the league while all protocols are followed, no fans are allowed in and the routine testing continues. This could be jeopardised by the start of Cups where the lower league clubs, who aren’t subject to the same levels of testing as the Premierleague, start to mix with the big boys!
Mahe…re my post last night/this morning – it was a series of rhetorical questions posed as a sort of response to what I see as constant criticism of Lennon and the team.
I can accept winning isn’t everything but really it is! It’s why we follow our team. Your article today is designed to create a route to winning ways again. If we draw we’re pissed off…look what happens when we lose!!
Auldheid…thanks for your comments to my post. My point about Res 12 was more about its current conflation as a Miracle Medicine to sort our onfield ills when the answers required are more local and more immediate.
Jim the Tim…that’s a few days you’ve been out now, I hope you’re on the mend and will be back on soon. Meanwhile here’s a hymn that was played at the end of virtual Mass on Sunday

That would be a most welcome event. DD fucks off with Lawwell accompanying him. I fear though it’s not gonna happen.
The only other hope would be that the bend over boys and girls pull up their pants and stop encouraging their self serving masters by stemming the flow of cash into their already bulging bank accounts.

“It’s terrible so it is but but but it’s part of my social scene so I’m gonna remain firmly bent over with the Vaseline tub at hand”

For that reason, that’s also a non starter.

Neil Lennon isn’t a vg manager. PL is an even worse chief executive. DD is an absentee landlord with no interest in seeing Celtic return to their former glory days.

Getting rid of Neil Lennon would no doubt see an improvement in the team. The improvement would only be at a domestic level though. It might see the 10 realised. Unfortunately, if that does happen, it’s inviting more of the same. More European decline. More downsizing.

Keep Neil? Lose the 10?

Neil gets sacked, another Brendan arrives in order to boost ticket sales, the huns are celebrating so Dermot is happy too. The new Brendan stays long enough to watch his squad getting decimated so departs to pastures new, and it’s all aboard and off we go again.

Soon, just qualifying for the EL will be the new height of the bar.

Retired Internet Bampot

The malaise has been obvious since football resumed in June. January to March there appeared to be unity and a happy camp. There is no doubt the league would have been won had it been allowed to continue, and by more than 13pts.
Who decided to change the formation, last season. Did the players push for it whilst in Dubai? Is the manager now sabotaging it by messing with the personnel, to prove a point/”show who’s boss”? Is the manager changing the week’s training at the last minute for similar power struggle reasons? Are the coaches not following direction? Are the players thinking they can rule the roost?
Why are the power brokers not fixing it? I’ll suggest that with all major assets, where “real” profit could be achieved, still at the club , the club have resigned themselves to a virtual dividend free year. It then follows that all eggs are in the “we’re taking the credit for steering the club to 10iar” basket ; and that makes it even more puzzling why there have been no signs of firm direction/decisive action.
I cannot comprehend the whole structure being broken fully. I cannot believe that the malaise cannot be immediately addressed , joined up thinking restored and everyone working together. The club , as mentioned above , seem to be accepting the current pandemic has aided to lack of a bulging balance sheet. Losing a few more quid on removing cancerous elements within the setup , may be the only answer to get the club back on track with a direction of continued domestic success , along with CL group qualification being a must and European footie after Xmas as success in UEFA tourneys

The answers are known by those we trust to run our club. They are tasked with ensuring that OUR club is run to realise all the realistic ambitions, desires and demands that we as supporters are wanting fulfilled. In saying that maybe this is the stumbling block , maybe the Tory thinking powerbrokers at our club are putting profit before our demands and in doing so don’t know how/ don’t want to fix the issues ; in fear of financial repercussions.

I’m not the only person, out there in Timternet who has worked in executive positions within industry. The situation we’re in , isn’t unique to football BUT when being paid as an executive/senior manager you made the decisions that fixed the issues and followed them up by ensuring systems were in place to avoid repeats.

Over to you DD, PL , IB etc.

The Gombeen Man

Auldheid,

Thanks for the reply.

Some say Original Sin or Karma are just medieval terms for what we now call conditioning (experiences/trauma/knowledge). Just the things that block us from Reality, Source or in ‘Separation.’

The illusion in the first part of life :

The delusion of self-sufficiency. Driven by desire. The craving for pleasure, success, wealth, happiness and the mistaken belief that desire can bring about lasting security, affirmation, control.

In that state of separation (ignorance in Buddism/blindness in Christianity). Man’s despair sometimes makes him capable of desperate things and rationalising them. In turn that leads to the tortuous guilt cycle.

Sooner or later the inevitable happens. Grief, illness, material loss occurs and for the first time powerlessness results.

Something that we can’t fix under our own resources.

If we don’t fall into deeper despair at that stage, it’s really an opportunity to look at ourselves. Maybe begin recovery from whatever trauma we carry and move into the second part of life?

That’s really why we’re here.

All of the setbacks/rejection/loss are really pulling us in the towards the Unitive State, Oneness or Love.

Resolution 12 might be seen as a part of that process for some. Removal of what is false, what causes separation. In medieval terms, what is evil; the conflict upon which, things like Old Firmism thrive.

Cynthia Bourgeault, an Episcopalian priest describes the process…

“It does not fall like a ripe fruit from a tree or open itself like a lotus blossom. It comes at the end of a fierce struggle, a journey of deepening self-knowledge brought through deepening dying to self. In Christian teaching, this final passage has traditionally been known as “the Dark Night of the Spirit,” and it is a wilderness journey indeed, overturning not only most of our familiar reference points, but even the structures of consciousness through which they are maintained. “Dying to self” proves itself to be something like an onion skin, peeled back to reveal still further layers of dying—until finally there is nothing left except the All.”

That’s why disconnecting from outcomes is important…

There’s something bigger going on.

Life’s rollercoaster just removes the blockages, if we stick with the process and use the available tools (prayer, appreciate therapy, meditation, contemplation).

The journey has been well charted by mystics of all traditions.

And yes PL/NL/CW/SG/Glibby are on the same road too…That’s where compassion comes in.

“They know not what they do…”

Kind of a like being a child, anxiously lost in a shop and finally realising that the parent has been searching the whole time too.

Mahe,

Great leader today and some fantastic posts too.

Awe Naw, pointed out Damien Duff’s departure some time ago. Add to that Fraser Forster. An unhappy camp.

The executive thinking seems to have been keep Neil away from the disruptive influence of his buddies, keep hold of our better players and spend a few quid and we’ll get the 10.

Unfortunately we’ve been down these cul-de-sac’s repeatedly over the years.

Saturday was only confirmation of the malaise at Executive level.

The lasting damage is in the 5WA. Imo

Till Later.

Auldheid…thanks for your comments to my post. My point about Res 12 was more about its current conflation as a Miracle Medicine to sort our onfield ills when the answers required are more local and more immediate.
=======
And a correct point it is too. It is why efforts this season have been under the social media radar although I do make mention of it here more than anywhere else because of interest shown on the issue.

It’s more of a strategic issue than a tactical one.

Tactically: When Tony Mowbray left Celtic , they ,
following up on a suggestion from the CST, embarked on a Roadshow that allowed for questions to be answered.

NL should be having an internal Roadshow with the Board but then to stop the guessing game, go public via Celtic TV explaining the factors that led to the decline in performance and what needs to be done to reverse the decline.

I’d take heart in what The Gombeen man says about the dark night of the spirit/soul, it’s where we are as supporter and human beings but note the end of that journey is unity. It requires the first element of love which is patience because as The Gombeen Man says there is something bigger going on of which Res12 is but a part.

You may well be correct that there is a growing recognition that something is rotten in the confines of Celtic Park, and sites like this-and others,obviously-make it easier to discuss the malaise or downright surrender

You and the lads have done more than most to highlight this,to bring itto the attention in a way that most of us-routinely dismissed as keyboard warriors-never could. And as much as we will be eternally grateful for that, where has it gotten us? Please don’t take this the wrong way,P. We have all been behind you and pushing, but it is a door that is firmly closed. And that,I feel,is where the likes of AWENAW,MAGS,THEGOMBEENMAN et al are coming from.

Yes,their take on things, the bald language used at times to express it,is distressing to read. But only because we can’t dismiss it as the words of a crank. Every word is intended to wound, but also because they too have been wounded.

I’m rapidly coming to the conclusion that the board CGAF and honestly ignore what happens on the pitch, don’t bother with a swatch at a league table on a Monday morning. That it’s a side issue for them. I’ve actually felt that way for an uncomfortable length of time-years,not days-but sometimes I just want to be wrong.

My worry is that I’m right.

I’ll be able to tell you where it has got us when Res12 has ran its course, which should be in next 2 months if an AGM takes place and Celtic don’t find a technical or legal reason to reject the latest resolution to bring Res12 to an end..

There are two possible outcomes:

Not only do the Board not gaf about the emotional impact from the way the club is run but so too do the support even though unhappy with it – which is how it looks
or
The support do gaf after seeing the latest Res and get organised to make sure the Board gaf in the future.

Either way Res12 as such will have done its job.
