Where do we go from here?

Morning,all.

You saw it,we all did. One attack, goal. Why is that, maybe our mega money defence and goalkeeper aren’t as good as we thought? Seems so,much as we all hate to admit it.

Can’t really have a go at NL for the team he picked nor for the formation. If you can’t keep it out at the back, you won’t win anything. But if he can’t see there’s a problem at the back?

Well,every opposition coach does.

I could say so much more about last night, but I’d rather not. I know that you all expect a decent article with a good few words, but today, not for me.

It’s just heartbreaking to watch.

BMCUWP,

It is heartbreaking to watch this Celtic team now.

We can look at the consolation goal and make something of it, it would be ignoring the fact that AC Milan were better in every department.

Now having more money to buy better players is one thing, but tactics, formation, set plays, fitness, physicality and many more aspects of the game can be equalisers, yet as I said we were bested in each area.

I did predict we’d have players up for this match and indeed that was the case, it meant in the first fifteen minutes and after our goal we were making a fist of it.

Yet the collapse after AC Milan’s first goal shows the winning and competitive mentality of our invincible squad has now been totally brow-beaten out of these players.

The fact that, when we were given hope after Moi’s goal that could easily be thwarted by AC Milan just upping their game and getting a well deserved third.

I’ve often said Lenny is a lucky manager and for a time in that match it did look like we were up for it and could pinch a draw, but it wasn’t to be, it seems to me Lenny’s luck has run it’s course.

A shout out to Laxalt though, it shows what a highly motivated, talented footballer can bring to the team even in dire circumstances, hope his positivity lasts longer than Ajeti’s.

Hail Hail

Noel Skytrot

Rubbish first half, poor defending for the goals, far better after substitutions and the formation change. Pittodrie next.

Can’t really have a go at NL for the team he picked nor for the formation.

You don’t get any prizes for noticing something amiss about Lenny’s second tenure, yet I haven’t noticed anyone state an obvious fact. He has got so much worse as a head coach than from his previous stint.

It seemed to be Gavin Strachan giving advice and we certainly seemed to be trying a few different things. Which only creates more questions than answers.

Of course when you play the blame game there’s only one man for me. His treatment of the likes of MO’N, Bobo and Jackie Mac was a pointer to big Pedro’s personality.

It is now writ large throughout our Club and it’s a pretty ugly sight.

Hail Hail

Morning All,

Not good, hearing at least 7 way split in dressing room ???????

Rumours was not just a great LP😁

HH

Dubaibhoy

Guys,

It is too easy to criticise Duffy – he may be fulfilling a dream but he’s just not up to it, but PL has put him there. He’s the modern day Frank Munro.

The biggest problem I see in the team is the keeper. He cant kick a ball so he fannies about at the back leaving Duffy to dribble it out from the back (which he is completely incapable if doing).

He can only kick it to the centre circle, so Ajeti is playing too deep and play gets compressed. When he does try to kick it long, its back in our danger zone in seconds.

The other guy who is ultimately useless is Frimpong. Great energy + dribbling, but cant kick a ball. He got himself into decent positions, but cant get the ball off the ground. There is no point in persevering with a wing back if he cant feed forwards.

The Gombeen Man

Fair play BMCUWPS for having the awareness to stop typing and overanalyzing last night’s debacle.

It’s been heartbreaking for years.

The trick isn’t to focus on the matches or individuals but the process and strategic thinking that behind this.

The recruitment mess, the 5WA, the European decline, the failure to stand up for the players, the treatment of the supporters, youth policy. Balance sheet mentality.

Painful as it is, this is a necessary part of the process.

Stick with it.

Oglach

Duffy isn’t the only problem at the back. As i said yesterday Ajer is just as culpable charging forward and losing the ball isn’t an overly clever tactic . AC were playing well within themselves and were happy to let us retain the ball, most teams are these days.
No positives from yesterday apart from it wasn’t a league game. Also agree with Dubaibhoy – Frimpong continually flatters to deceive – fast , gets past players but try as he might he can’t buy a pass to a team mate. Youthful exuberance will only take you so far.

Awe Naw

Varkas, Walsh, Duffy and Ajer have played together for Celtic less than twice against the best domestic and European opposition we will face this year. When playing 3 at the back building relationships and understanding is paramount.

One wing back Laxalt has played less than twice for Celtic against the best domestic and European opposition we will face this year. He looks good Greg Taylor should be concerned.

The other wing back Frimpong is 19 years old. Surely worth persevering with ? If he didn´t panic after doing all the dirty work he´d be in the Wan Bisska price category. If Forrest was fit or Elyounossi had started I don´t think we would have seen him in the box against the current Seria a leaders as much as we did last night. We did manage to score against them as have Inter`Milan.

The above players make up our defensive unit currently and I repeat it will take time and games for them to develop a better understanding of one another’s games preferably against lesser opposition. Do we have enough time ?

Jullien, El Hamed, Forrest, Eduardo , Bitton being absent, Ajeti, Christie, Griffiths not being match fit doesn´t help.

Duffy has been thrown in at the deep end and he is sinking but we have presently no alternative ? and I would continue to pick him anyway. He will come good.

McGregor gave the ball away as many times as Duffy did last night.

Did Griffiths play himself into a starting position for Sunday last night ?

For the first 15 minutes last night we played well and again in the second half but like last Saturday our defence let us down (see first 6 paragraphs)

bada bing1

I agree Brown needs to sit out some games, but the Sheep have Ferguson and McCrorie in midfield hitting anything that comes near them,so I would play him on Sunday.

Awe Naw

Brown is suspended for Sunday

bada bing1

Awe Naw- ta,could be a help or a hindrance, given what I posted

bada bing1

Ajer was outstanding last night IMO…

Oglach

lowlights of yesterdays game

Duffy only culpable at 1 goal.

AC 1st – Welsh poor
AC 2nd Calmac gets in the way
AC 3rd Duffy poor positional awareness but look at the number of Celtic players in a small area attracted to and watching the ball. Huge areas of space for the AC player to play the ball into an unmarked attacker – poor shape poor coaching

Reiterate Ajer was poor at doing his job which is defending (imho of course)

GER57

Disappointing result but a better attitude. Milan are a better side than I thought, but they’re no world beaters. Our defence is shocking. Sorry, but Shane Duffy is a big lump o wid. I wouldn’t play him again.
Frimpong needs to work on his delivery into the box. I think he will improve.
I’m a bit worried about our 3 Covid affected guys. Seems they got a severe dose of the virus and are truly laid up. Olivier is a superb player but he’s not performing. Does he want to leave? If so, get him tae. Diego is a real solid player, way better than GT, with some pace and dig. Great signing.
Kris Ajmer; when our centre backs have peaceful possession, he does try to find a forward pass, or take the ball forward himself. At least one of our midfield should drop back to voter when he move up the park. It’s basic stuff. Remember Jim Craig and Tommy Gemmell saying that the equaliser in Lisbon shouldn’t have happened. Both full backs so far forward. A month ago, we were chuffed at our forward signings; now we are struggling. Christie adds energy to our play, but he also needs to be less slack with his passes.
So Carlton Tongues has heard of strife in the dressing room. If true, this is tragic. The senior squad players need to get a grip.
Two years ago, there wasn’t a player from any other Scottish club who could have improved our squad. Defo not the case now. Our players seem to have regressed. Are there disputes among the players, or do they just not believe in Lenny?
Here’s a suggestion. Arsenal Wenger. Out of work, brilliant tactician, strong on discipline and fitness.

McCaff

Morning all, Oglach I thought Calmac only came in to back up Duffy but when he didn’t close Calmac decided to and then Duffy moved to close causing confusion and giving Diaz the wee opening. A fuck up no matter which way you look at it.
Looking at Duffy specifically he just looks out of his depth at the minute. Like most on here my expectations were higher but he’s been a real disappointment! He doesn’t look good even at SPFL level never mind European or International.

Oglach

McCaff

Disagree, from my perspective – Calmac comes charging in from midfield and runs stright into Duffy rather than challenge the AC player. Not trying to find excuses for the big fella, as one wit succinctly put it, he is our very own Joey Barton, an overhyped product of the English leagues who has failed to impress in Scotland – thus far.

JimmynotPaul

I think Scott Brown is available to play on Sun.

Sol Kitts

Is Duffy another one who has read and believed all the guff about the SPFL being a pub league, and thinking he only had to turn up and look good? If so, time to wake up and smell the coffee. He needs to up his game sharpish.

bada bing1

Duffy was excellent for the Republic, in a couple of games last week, who play a back 4,maybe that’s the difference.

Oglach

bada

I think our persistence with a back 3 is problem for Shane he simply isn’t adapting to the system. Never a ball playing CB in England so i am not sure why we thought he could fill that role in Scotland.

Oglach

Italian press lavishing praise on Ajer. Appears i must have been watching a different player last night🤔🤔!!!

The Gazzetta dello Sport awarding the Norwegian a 6.5 the paper wrote: “Now we know why Milan included him on their shopping list”

Duffy gets slated as do Celtic in general with the team rated 5/10 with Duffy the worst player.

“It doesn’t take Milan much to demonstrate Pioli’s thesis – namely that there isn’t just a starting team – at least against opponents of this level”.
“Celtic, with their linear football is ideal for giving a rookie like Dalot a bit of European experience, while Kessie ruled the midfield as usual”

Mahe

Morning folks and a big Happy Friday.

I also thought Kris was our best player last night. He’s is a quality player that has really grown on me.

Strife in dressing room?
No surprise but the main thing I wanted to see, effort and attitude, as actually there last night.
Whoever said Lennys luck has ran out I agree but the bigger picture of how the club is set up has brought us here.
I hope we move away from how we have been doing things but I’m not hopeful while DD holds the reigns.
Crap place to be.

About Odsonne, I have been saying Covid could damage can athlete, seems it’s one of our it’s happened to. Terrible news. Looks like we kept him when we shoulda sold. Can’t blame anyone as I would have also. Sad situation.

C&P from a comment I made on 7 October,over a fortnight ago.

***

This is a very serious problem that we have here. As I mentioned last night,it isn’t just a case of waiting for Eddie to “get over things”,it is much more serious than that. He has a severe viral respiratory illness, and athletes take longer to recover fully from that due to the stress that they place on their respiratory system.

All those short bursts of speed at full 100% power take their toll. And attempting to do so before a complete recovery can cause long term damage.

I think Laudrup went down with flu when the huns were going for their ninth or tenth title, and they already had a few injuries. They tried to get the game-against us!-called off,but the Scottish League refused. Laudrup “played” but was miles off the pace, and IMO,was never the same player again.

We have to write off Eddie until he is fully cleared to play. If it costs us points,we will just have to make them up in the next games. We won’t win the league by destroying our star player.

***

There has been a tendency to downplay the severity of this disease, especially among the young and fit. Nir Bitton told us only a few days ago how hard it hit him,and it looks like it has probably hit Eddie even harder. We have to simply give them the time to recover, and hope that they do.

McCaff

The protocols in place seem to have protected the Celtic players but the International call up has exposed protected players, not only at Celtic but elsewhere, too. As always the freeloaders and hangers-on have the power to disregard the good work done by Clubs for an Air Miles top-up and a free lunch!
And the more succesful Clubs pay the higher price as the risks are greater due to the numbers being called up.
It’s unlikely Eddie, Bitton, Elhamed and Christie would have been exposed to the risks if they hadn’t been called up. As Bobby says this virus can have a debilitating long-term recovery time.
And don’t forget Eddie falls into an ethnic category that seems to be affected harder than others, too!

Mahe

Auldheid,
Yesterday while making dinner I listened to this excellent podcast, The Price of Football latest episode, which gave a prominent Newcastle fan a lot of airtime.

https://play.acast.com/s/priceoffootball/europeanpremierleagueplans-manchesterunitedslatestaccounts-newcastleunitedsupporterstrustinterview

It struck me that he was essentially the Geordie you! Said many of the same things and had a similar tale to yourself, the similarities were striking.

10s of thousands Newcastle fans have walked away and refuse to even speak of the club so disgusted with what it has become.
He set up a group to counter this, expected every fam to show up and support only 2k did.
He was disappointed but now realises many fans just want to sit on their chair and watch the football.
Calls for drastic action have failed.
He now realises he needs to work with the club and owner rather than try to push them out.
Refunds have not been handled well at all.

One difference is that he very much has the ear and support of the local MP. Their Trust wasn’t that successful, got modernized and serious, now up to 12k members which gives them clout, there’s a lesson there my learned friend.

It’s informative and heartbreaking at the same time.
” No one should have to give up 30 years of supporting and a huge part of their life just because of Mike Ashley but that’s what’s happening ”

Have a great weekend anyway.
Hail Hail

Mahe

Is Scott Brown available? Bobby says he is out, some say that wrong?

A thing of beauty

Duffy is in my opinion being played when not fit. Not his fault but he has not played much football in the last year. He is also a limited, ball winning centre half who is being asked to do a job he can’t do and never has done in his career. I said when we were signing him, if we were going three at the back we needed a LEFT sided centre half. We’ve not had one for as long as I can remember. Neil is shoe horning players into roles they can’t do. Can you imagine if he had been asked to play attacking midfielder under O’Neill. He’d have looked daft. Can’t understand why he’s doing the exact same thing to our players.
We also have a problem in Jeremy Frimpong. The guy gets bums off seats but that’s about it. His final ball is always the same – garbage. I think he’s had one assist I can think of this season to moi in the European game. That’s not enough going forward and when you take in his shortcomings defensively, he cannot keep the jersey when el Hamed is back.
I also don’t think Brown should play on Sunday, suspended or not. He should be used to close out games but the tempo needs to be quicker from the start. We should be blowing teams away with the players we have middle to front. Let’s start at a quick pace and bring brown on if necessary. As has been said before, Tom Boyd was captain when we stopped their ten. He hardly played but he was still important.
Christie did ok when he came on last night. That’s all, ok. He takes all the free kicks and corners and mostly they are shit. He also shoots too often when his shooting is poor. He needs to be more of a team player and we need to find someone else who can take a set piece.
Which brings me to my final moan. Leigh Griffiths. How long does it take us to get a guy fit. What is going on up at lennoxtown. He’s been training since lockdown stopped aside for a short period with a calf problem. Why is he not at the stage where he can do more than he is? I think all the players fitness is down, which I don’t understand because that should be a given at a professional football club. What is happening up there?

Noel Skytrot

Brown has had 5 yellow cards in the league so far.

rebus67

My goodness, it does not take many games or negative results to produce a crisis! Gone is the optimism of the Hibs game. However, setting aside coaching and recruitment issues for just a minute, let’s look at how the unknowns have impacted the club. Forrest, Julien out injured….long term, as is Johnson. Ajeti, Griffiths and Duffy have not played much first team football for months, and then the former pulls a hamstring! Edouard, off the boil for some reason, followed by a bout of CV19 and joined at the virus party by Bitton and El Hamed. Is there anything else, I forgot? Yes, Christie forced to sit on the sidelines.
Now, thinking objectively, is there any team that would not be negatively impacted by this perfect storm? Throw in a serious upgrade in our opponents from the likes of Livingston to Sevco and Milan, and you can see that we might under perform.

The above might explain why the current coaching staff may keep their jobs but should they? One characteristic of a top coach is how he or she handles adversity. Last season we played 4231 initially and performances gradually deteriorated, culminating in poor performances versus Sevco. After Dubai, we switched to 352 and we swept all before us as Sevco imploded. At the start of this season, we dropped the 352 for some reason and reverted to 4231 resulting in dull performances. Then starting with Ross County we switched to a back three, playing 3142. We won that game 3-0. Ever since then we have played a back three, usually in the 352 format.

Prior to the Sevco game we were without Ajeti, Griffiths(partially fit at best), Edouard(Covid) and Christie(rested). This left ONE fit striker, Klimala. Under these circumstances does it make sense to start with a formation that has two strikers? Meanwhile at the back, we had lost El Hamed and Bitton due to Covid, and Julien due to injury…..that is three CBs out. Does it make sense to play three at the back under those circumstances, especially as it requires bringing in an untried youth player? It is these decisions that should be used to judge the coaching staff.

If NL sanctions three at the back on Sunday, he deserves the boot, irrespective of the result. It is a gamble that need not be taken and should not be taken. Up front, I can see the desire to play two strikers, but having three at the back is not the only way to do this. We can use 433 or 442…..we certainly have enough midfield options to try either of these. It just requires the foresight and gumption to do so! This squad should be far to good to lose at Pittodrie, even with our injury load.

Rebus

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, sorry to say big shane will never make it at parkhead ,his passing is woeful, his positional sense is in a similar vein, what he needs to do is watch some videos of john clark, passing the ball out of defense, he might learn a thing or two,H.H.

Mahe

Afternoon Big Packy. Hope all well. Worried about our Jim also.

Rebus, no doubt 4 makes us stronger. We must go that way. I already backed a 433 and see it as our way forward. Odsonne left, Griff uptop and Ajeti floating.
The middle should be one attack minded and two defensive I feel so Broony/Calmac Soro Rogic would be nice.
The team and system that finished the game and was looking a lot better needs to start imo.
Still unsure whether Broony can play Sunday.

I think its 5 in the EPL and 6 in the SPL(i might be wrong though) also the rags would of wasted no time in letting us know he was suspended

Billy Bhoy

The confusion around Scott Brown is very simple.

The SMSM were wetting their knickers a few weeks ago over the “fact” that if Broony got booked against St Johnstone he would miss the Sevco game. As it happened he was left out although came on in 82 mins and avoided a card.

Now, he WAS booked against Sevco (for fuck all BTW) so many of us assumed that he would now miss the Aberdeen game.

However, the original story was of course complete pish and so is still available.

We should have known better than to believe pricks who actually wrote that they were “unsure” if Laxalt would be “allowed” to play against AC Milan. It’s as if Paddy Roberts never played AND scored against Man City at the Etihad just 4 years ago!

Thing about a balance sheet is has to balance. Thus if doing something coming from a generosity of spirit is in one column, so too is a meanness of spirit in the other.

Thus imbalance can arise and become pervasive depending on which column is perceived as providing better balance in a given situation.
