̶S̶k̶y̶ Sly Sports

It wasn’t until I noticed a Tim blowing up online regarding Skys non screening of our Hibs game that the penny dropped this affects us all, and the timing couldn’t be worse.
For a fanbase used to choice, and in a world where everything is online, for a game not to be televised at all in this day and age just seems wrong.

Fans of Brechin, Stockport County and Cliftonville would roll their eyes at that statement, and I admit in normal times they would have a point, but they aren’t in our shoes.
For this game to have no coverage will leave many tens of thousands in limbo, as it could well be history in the making, yet we are left to turn to the old transistor wireless ala the 50’s.

And its a BIG game. It has to be stated there is a chance it will be Lenny’s last in charge (for this spell) as a thrashing here would probably be too much for everyone.
But a thrashing is exactly what the Hibee’s would love to hand out, don’t believe anything else.
For starters their manager has been earning high praise, is said to be quite tactical, and was even tipped for our hotseat by a few Tims, he has no better chance to cement his potential credentials.
The old Hibees that played under Lenny, or any youth ignored then but playing now, will be absolutely desperate to pile the pressure on their old boss they helped force out.
And after the Covid / International break no one knows exactly what they are gonna get from us.
It all screams of a must watch game where we could see the Champions implode or step up to the plate.
And we won’t see it !?

Why must be asked. I read that Skys next three televised SPL games will all feature the same team, our title rivals. I understand the leading team may be televised more overall, but three games in a row, after Translategate, plus their general attitude regarding the national sport up north, helps this Tim feel there’s some institutional bias at play, plus a bit of currying favour for the future taking place here.

‘Stevie’ won’t be here much longer, is being hyped up by the media down south as a future EPL maybe Liverpool manager one day, and getting him in front of the camera helps Sly Sports to justify the meager pittance they pay to the game up north.
Getting in his good books now makes sense then I guess, and he himself did well out of the relationship via positive spin as after all not winning something for two years over there usually would see the media help force you out, but that just never happened.
Both parties will be hoping for a trio of magnificent victories followed by Cheshire Cat interviews, great business and television all around.
Except for the rest of us.

Now the Hibs home fans will have the game, its correct and befitting their VST permits them to watch all home games, but there is no PPV available for fans of the opposing team (at least not yet) which really shows the disjointed nature of Scottish football.
I understand their fans weren’t impressed when our own club didn’t allow them to buy our last meeting, and I agree with them. I’ve no idea why that happened, but it shouldn’t have, and all top flight matches should be available for a reasonable fee I believe.
But then this shouldnt be getting made up on the hoof, these decisions should have been determined by the SPL board or via a members vote, and protocols set in stone, but no.
Of course the SPL will hardly care that Tims miss a game. Their favoured team is on instead so what’s the problem?

Meanwhile you and me are left to get on with it, never mind it’s a momentous season or the fact supporters can’t go to their beloved game so should be indulged via streams or tv channels more than ever.
Never mind this has the chance to be a season, maybe an era defining game.
And never mind the fact this has the potential to go very wrong when that one guy who can somehow get the game invites the guys around for a wee session, illegal now in many places but Tims need to watch their team and shouldnt be put in this position.

Part of me hopes it’s a real cracking game just to ram it up the executives that patently bypassed us, but then would they even care?
They will probably get exactly what they want from Ibrox, with no guarantees the same wouldn’t happen again.
Of course your money isnt second class for those still paying Murdoch, just you.

There may be sunshine on Leith occasionally, but next Saturday there’ll be no cameras for us.
The sooner we get rid of Sly Sports for good the better.

Mahe, I used to have Sky but I stormed off them some years ago when I found out how much English football was benefiting from Sky and what Scottish football was getting. At a rough estimate we have 10% the population of England. So that is my guide to what Scotland should be receiving. It is nowhere near that! Unfair doesn’t come close to it.

At the moment I pay £77 pm to BT. Phone line, free calls, BT TV Box, unlimited broadband. (No BT Sports though!)
I recently received a leaflet from Sky. £15 pm for the same package for 18 months, thereafter £60 pm.

I was sorely tempted! That’s a big saving. But I loathe Sky. Even apart from their unfair distribution of money, they are biased against Scottish football and especially Celtic in their coverage.

I have as much admiration for Murdoch as I had for Thatcher.

Feck them!

Btw, Sky have a huge call centre in Livingston. At the time I cancelled I knew two employees. Both of them told me that at that time Sky had a much greater uptake in Scotland per head of population than they did in England, which made it even worse!

The Gombeen Man

Good read this morning. Morning all,

Sky are owned by Comcast, I’m not sure what stake Rupert Murdoch maintains?

This extra Sevco home game (Aberdeen) is down to the early finish of last season due to Covid. The league owed Sky money, so they renegotiated the new deal to add more games and prevent a cash claw back…

Daily Express 6/6/20.

“And despite the SPFL insisting the deal is as publicly advertised, Express Sport has seen proof that the recommendation to clubs sent on May 29 included new proposals allowing Sky to broadcast five live matches from their home stadium (Sevco?), and six in the case of Celtic, an addition from the previously agreed four matches for each club.

This comes despite chief executive Neil Doncaster insisting the deal was an ‘excellent outcome’ and that it was ‘vital’ the 12 SPFL clubs approved the deal.

The need to renegotiate with Sky was due to the curtailment of the 2019/20 season, and the broadcaster being due around £5m in compensation for the games they didn’t show.”

Sevco have previous for undermining confidential contracts. The follow up by the SPFL must be due at any day now…

Celtic had our first game of the season live at home. The unfurling of the flag v Hamilton. If the leak in the tabloid is correct there is possibly another live game to come from Celtic Park in addition to the second Sevco game in 2021? Making six in total : 4 v Sevco and 2 others.

Watch this space…

Celtic play St Johnstone and Kilmarnock at home in December before the Cup Final. The home games will be VST games. We’ve no home pay per view option apart from Celtic TV

The Cup Final on the 20th is BBC/Premier (RoI).

Sevco have 2 away games on the 6th and 13th of December and are on Sky as we’d normally expect with an away fixture.

https://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/1291984/SPFL-Sky-Sports-deal-devalued-additional-games-exclusive/amp

On another note Sky’s photograph of Neil in comparison to the photoshopped James Bond image of Stevie Gee sums up the marketing/mindset.

A throwback to the cartoons of the early days of the OF, where the Celtic supporter was depicted by a very negative racial stereotype.

BT have the Europa League games after the international break.

MAHE

Sky Sports have long shown themselves to be no friends of ours. Now,you might think that their cancellations department would take note of the number of Celtic supporters who have called to cancel over the years and given the same reason for their decision, that their coverage is clearly biased in every respect.

Seems not, despite so many of those cancelling relating the same response-Oh,yes. You’re not the only person who has cancelled for this reason.

It seems that the Scottish offshoot is treated as a stand-alone outpost, not so much independent as of no interest to the big bosses. Their income from north of the border is a small fraction of the total and not worth losing sleep over.

‘Twas ever thus under Murdoch and continues under Comcast.

I had a different outcome about eight years ago when I made a complaint to Virgin. I had originally called to upgrade my package, they had a special deal of £25 for a season of Sky Sports (I think) but when I called, the Scottish fella on the other end basically refused to process it as soon as he heard my name-and no,I’m not making that up! And since it was the last day of the offer,I had real difficulty getting through again to someone else.

Sod this, googled Saynoto0870 for a complaints number and did just that. Explained what had happened, time of call, and his name. Suggested they check their call recordings and get back to me. They did, about three days later. Apparently it was difficult to prove the reasons for his attitude-you can guess what I had suggested they were!-but agreed that my description of the call was otherwise accurate. Fella had been taken off the phones for “retraining” and by way of apology my system had been upgraded to full package at no extra cost for six months!

It pays to be polite and objective when you complain, but also to get people like that where it hurts!!!

BMCUWP

That was a bit harsh on the fella ,I find your Ayrshire accent a bit hard to understand too.:O)

BOBBY MURDOCH'S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

VOGUEPUNTER

Ah,you have to be more specific. The Ayrshire accent is straightforward enough, but we speak a different language entirely in Kilwinning. My Dad-still an “interlouper” after 59 years-will testify to that.

BTW,his bosses had no problem understanding me!

Oglach

Chances are that if the game is being shown on Hibee TV that there will be a free stream available on the oul internet thingy. Also i bet it’s better quality than the much maligned, and deservedly so, Celtic TV. How dare they, Celtic TV, have someone with a broad Dublin accent commentating on a game! 🙄😏

PS – no Sky coverage means not having to listen to Soup taker extraordinaire Andy ‘I am a wanker’ Walker !

Every cloud CSC

Oglach, LOL 🙂
The guy on Celtic TV can’t be as bad as Pat Bonner on BBC Sportsound, dearie me! I heard Pat is a nice man but I wish he would give up trying to be a pundit. Tries too hard to be neutral for my liking.

And don’t get me started about Tom English!

The news about a possible vaccine is definitely a plus, and at the prices suggested per course of two jabs should work out around £4bn including costs of administering it universally.

So why this unnecessary and probably useless suggestion at TEN times the price?

AFTERNOON ALL and JIM, im in two minds about the sky thing, when it first came out i rushed out and bought a dish, think it was 1986 maybe wrong, but i wanted to see my heroes playing live and especially at parkhead, before sky living down here in englandshire all you got was highlights of a game if it was in europe or a cup final, scottish football was consigned to the back pages of the tv and tabloids, in fact not the back page the page before the back page, about two lines on scottish football, so although i had to put up with martin tyler and andy the bluenose gray, at least i seen my team live👍

I moved to South Shields at the start of 87. You are bang on about the coverage in the English papers of Scottish football.

Still,it saved me reading about us blowing a huge lead in Souness’ first season.

big packy

BOBBY, hows trix are you still waiting for your tacho certificate,👍

Packy, Truth be told we all purchase from firms who have faults.
I buy from Amazon for example but I’m no big fan of some of their ethics. They are known corporate tax dodgers. But on the other hand they employ loads of people, in Dunfermline for example, who make a living from them. And lots of times Amazon is merely the middle man in your purchase. The goods are actually supplied by a small to medium firm somewhere in the UK. Firms that probably do pay corporate taxes and also employ folk.

Mahe

Morning folks
Jim, regarding Sky.
About 94 or so I recall the children going to pay for the Sky installation and a few months of everything for the parents. They were television people, set shows they didn’t miss.
Dad blew it.
‘Handing someone a bill for Christmas’ ‘Sure there’s five channels and RTE’ etc. He wasn’t impressed and wasn’t interested, didn’t get it.

About a year later I said feck it and got it myself. Before you knew it when you went out they would open your bedroom door, settle down and watch it themselves.
This 200 channel thing was fantastic etc.
Then they spoke to someone who ran a cable from my box to their tv.
After that it was ‘you wouldn’t mind Sky one at eight for that show we like!’

From don’t want it, terrible idea,, to happy days we love this once tried ( and someone else paying for it). Upon cancelation it was a Scottish call centre I well recall.

“Cancel everything because Im moving out of the parents and have bought my own house. I will see how paying the mortgage goes before I make a decision whether to get it in my new gaff.”
“Welcome to the land of the living Sir”

Old people eh? Exact same thing happened with my parents and the internet btw.
That was then however. I dont even have a tv in living room now. Tv here would kill you, twenty minutes ads per hour and the ads are waay louder than the programme just to piss you off.

Hope all well.
Hail Hail

It’s so long ago I dumped Sky for sucking the blood out of Scottish football I cannot remember.

I do recall trying to quantify how much money they earn compared to what they pay back, but I’d show them and BT the door and set up an SPFL channell..

I had an article called Can IPTV Save Celtic or was it Scottish football published on Celtic Underground probably.
Biggest unknown was production costs but with cost of technology falling since the time of the article production costs will have fallen to more affordable levels..
The fact smaller clubs are able to broadcast to their own fanbase suggests that is so.
Apart from which selling games to fans to watch remotely at a price of an ST breaks the price barrier between the cost of watching a game in person or via a screen as in sharing the cost of supporting Celtic more equitably globally.
Another driver has to be risk management in event of another pandemic. Had it not been for Celtic TV to deliver games Sky and BT dont, Celtic would be facing greater loss.
It is contingency planning and a lot of businesses that depend on physical attendance to continue as a business will now have to put pandemic preparation higher up their risk table and football will have to consider having full control of broadcasting rather than depend on Sky or BT.

Roger Mitchell was ahead of his time.

The Gombeen Man

BMCUWPS/Jimthetim 53,

Kilwinning isn’t the only place with interlopers. The term here is blow-ins…

Anyhow,

Tom English is from Limerick. That’s North Munster. (Thomond/ Tuadh-Mhumhain). A rugby man, who had an unfortunate end to his career in Irish Sports Journalism, shortly after an alleged row with a senior Irish rugby official (below).

Dermot is a Corkman. South Munster, (Desmond/Deasmhumhain). He moved to Dublin with his family during childhood.

Munster (An Mhumhain) was divided into two parts, Desmond and Thomond in 1118. Desmond was further divided with the arrival of the Anglo Norman’s from England into East and West Desmond.

The Anglo Norman’s took control of the eastern half of Desmond. The east took the name the Earldom of Desmond (Cork) and the west remained the Kingdom of Desmond (Kerry).

The surname Desmond is the Anglicized form of the ancient Gaelic “O’Deasmhumhnaigh”, translating as “the descendant of the Desmondman”, and meaning a native of Desmond. This was the original name for the province was, “Deas” meaning south, and Mhumhain (Munster).

Munster was subject to English conquest from the Anglo Norman period (Catholics) through the Reformation/Plantations to the Nine Years War.

It isn’t a huge surprise that Tom English works for the BBC and given the history of plantation in the area; he may have an inclination towards an establishment agenda.

“The Munster Plantation – the English land confiscation and colonisation – hit the province after the Desmond Rebellions of the 1570s and 80.

The Desmond wars smashed the Fitzgerald or Geraldine dynasty (Anglo Irish or Norman v Queen Elizabeth 1) which had dominated Munster for centuries. The former Fitzgerald lands were confiscated en masse. Similarly harsh action was taken against their allies – the Lord of the Barry family, for instance, was kept in the Tower of London until his death, and his heir was ordered to pay a (then huge) annual fine of £50.

More important for the ordinary people of Munster than a change of landowners was the devastation of much of the province. The Provincial President, Warham St Leger reported in April 1582 that up to 30,000 people had died of famine as a result of the scorched-earth tactics that had been used.

‘Munster’, he wrote, was, ‘nearly unpeopled by the murders done by the rebels and the killings by the soldiers’ Plague also broke out in Cork city, where the country people fled to avoid the fighting and it is estimated that by 1589, one third of the province’s population had died.

Edmund Spencer, poet and colonist, spoke of ‘a most populous and plentiful country suddenly left void of man or beast’ . The Gaelic Annals of the Four Masters, for their part, recalled, “At this period it was commonly said, that the lowing of a cow, or the whistle of the ploughboy, could scarcely be heard from Dun-Caoin to Cashel in Munster”.

Whether Dermot is a Desmond, a South-Munster or a O’Deasmhumhain, only time will tell?

There is quite a bit of Norman/Tudor/Gaelic entanglement in the Province of Mhumhain.
