Action not words

It’s a funny ol’ game isn’t it? After all, many teams would be extremely envious of our current position, but yet many Tims aren’t exactly convinced with what they are witnessing twice weekly.
Who’s right and who’s wrong?
The answer is,,,there is no correct answer.

It’s a quirk of football that every team that ever competed in a prolonged league and Cup campaign have not sparkle throughout the entirety. The famed Invicibles of Arsenal drew many games that season, the Lions dropped points, the Treble winning United side were stung into a severe reaction following defeat, and of course this midweek saw the current Champions of both England and Scotland drop points. To err is to be human, but the Tims have been feeling underwhelmed by what they are witnessing, yet still happy at our position.
Thus the head clashes with the heart, one urging concern, the other urging contentment.
Depending on what type of person you are, one of those feelings will likely dominate the other.

The next two games are the biggest yet, season defining actually. One keeps the treble dream alive, the other our European dream,,a week is a long time in football, but it’s weeks like these that we all live for. ‘We all’ must include the team, the people who actually put us in the position of going through in these two competitions whilst dominating/winning the other two competitions.

It’s up to them to provide the answers to the questions we ask, they all carry our hopes and dreams, while carrying their own. You can tell me you are concerned but cannot tell me AJ, Calmac, Arne or Kyogo don’t wish for more silverware or more European glory. After starting out on fire, you cannot tell me they must get constantly better,,I laid out one reason above but as the 2nd greatest Scottish manager once opined, just be there or thereabouts in March and he would cajole them into a successful finishing straight.

We haven’t reached the finishing straights yet, but it would be an incredibly cruel man or woman to believe those responsible for bringing us to the cusp of glory should not be given their personal shot at said glory. Just as players who managed promotion deserve a chance in their new division, our squad do deserve to carry through with what they began, and it’s only when all is said and done that one can fully access the situation and make cold clinical decisions.

I’ve read criticism of almost every Celtic player recently, I’m not saying it’s not without merit, but I will say a collection that’s overachieving on paper cannot be that bad that they all need sold. They are clearly doing something right being essentially 5 wins away from,,,
a, doing better than last year
b, putting us back on the European map
c, producing 20 million plus players
d, to be sitting here in January with an unforgettable season hanging in the balance is a supporters dream because our campaign was often deflated by November, going out of Europe early and having ‘only the league’ to ‘look forward to’.

Recall those years,, Ronnie, Lenny, Tony,,there just wasn’t much excitement going on with exceptions of course,,,kiss five frogs a summer, two in winter, dream of finishing third of four, hoping one frog is a prince then being ecstatic about him (Wanyama/Samaras/Wilson/Hooper to name a few) then deflated when they hit the road. Many past seasons seemed a long slog, big dreams crushed early and small dreams feeling like scant reward. Things have moved on I’m delighted to report, football has changed and so has our beloved club.

For years I despaired about the state of the domestic game, it’s joke approach and walkover nature. Now, Bobby wrote it himself in his article, Dundee are no turnovers, and beat us over 90 minutes (the extra cost them), and that’s Dundee! I used to count the decent teams on one hand, you could fill two hands now. The league has improved, clubs are looking to improve, men are out to make their mark and not be content with a simple average performance for a grand a week, whether managers or players.
The EPL constantly hover and but outwith that a player like Miovski actually had the brains to realize joining Aberdeen would get him a big move, infact several clubs have sold players to Italy now. They also hover over Scottish football now, another reason to excel not just turn up. Thelin will be poached, so it’s not just players that can use Scottish football to enhance their career.

Hat tip to UEFA for this new Swiss model, she’s a cracker. And thanks for the extra experience our players/manager gain. Of course you gotta be in it to enjoy it, so hat tip to the club for keeping our average age pretty low, for breaking the wage structure and signing important players up long term to help build the continuity that makes negotiating qualifiers that bit easier.
The extra experience mentioned helps, players like Engels cannot hurt either.

Although I cannot watch every game live due to the time difference, I find following the club much more exciting these days. I was thinking about this today, and I’m of the opinion the Celtic we are currently witnessing was birthed poolside in Dubai of all places, that infamous pic of Lenny and Big Shane having a nice pint during lockdown, while underachieving with a poor squad.
That sparked the hunt that delivered Ange, he sparked a reset in boardroom thinking, and when one of the EPL Big6 came for him, rather than opt for the fallback ‘Old Firm’ model, the Board embraced a different one that’s lucrative while keeping supporters excited. We no longer wonder how our star player fared, but instead wonder how many good players starred today. Any one of our players could steal the show, has stole the show before, we have a team packed with 8 figure talent, even if they don’t always show it I’d rather have that than the previous team built around one 8 figure player.

I was hesitant to type this but what the hell, you guys will forgive me and regular readers will know I’m a bit of a dreamer.
Why not, they’ve came true so far.

We are also about to witness something we haven’t seen in the modern era, the Sky Sports/Digital/Internet era.
A living breathing example that money isn’t everything, a homecoming that’s made in heaven, proof that Celtic are much bigger than the also rans of the EPL when you place footballing joy above your bank balance.
Last January delivered a genuine Celtic fan come player to drive us on, to deliver the trophies.
Would you honestly bet against KT doing the same this January?

Look, feel free to criticize form, certain players, the system/tactics etc, but I’m going to let this all play out before arriving at conclusions.
That seems only fair.
Can this team win the next two games?
Aye!
Lets back them all the way, and when alls said and done, judge by action not words.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

MacMillan Cancer Care

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

This recently from ATHINGOFBEAUTY deserves a repost.

Happy new year to you all. I just wanted to take the opportunity of the new year to thank and praise Chalmersbhoy for all the charity work he does for the site. Considering we are not the biggest Celtic blog, to raise over 4k for charity is quite a feat. Thanks also to all who contribute but these initiatives need a driving force and we’re very fortunate to have Chalmersbhoy at the wheel. More power to you sir.

****

I’d like to second those sentiments. While MAHE and I had tried several charity initiatives over these few years, they were bloody useless. They lacked the drive and focus that CHALMERSBHOY provided. So thanks, mate. Really well done. And thank you also to you and 16 ROADS for your continued generosity and sponsorship of the competitions, and to TWISTY for his in the recent past.

The next two games are eminently winnable.
Limited Kilmarnock, and a similarly placed YB in the Swiss league, should be treated with respect but not be causing widespread concern. We should approach these games with the confidence of a team that knows it is better.

Unfortunately our recent displays suggest that they will not be won with ease.

KT arriving would not only be a huge boost to squad morale but greatly enhance the lack of leadership we have throughout the squad.

He is a leader, Captain material, relieve the burden from Calmac and make it easier to “rest” our midfielder, who is currently immune from dropping out of the engine room.

There could be unintentional benefits, particularly if a much needed addition in midfield joins too.

Considering YB are already out of this year’s champions league, you would imagine their main focus will be trying to better their position in their own league, as they seem to be having a bit of a nightmare season.

In the CL to this point they’ve already conceded 22 goals and only managed to score just 3. I wonder how serious they will be taking this upcoming game against us? human nature and all that.We could barely ask for a better chance to reach the next stage.

I guess you could describe how i feel as quiet confidence.

Excellent article,mate. And as for:-

“Hat tip to UEFA for this new Swiss model, she’s a cracker.”

Well,that’s a stoatir!

Yes,you’re right. We SHOULD be cock-a-hoop at where we currently are. And I think most Celtic fans are,in truth. This is a season with so many possibilities, and we know what they are. As Celtic fans,we delight in the days when we look like world beaters and the sky is the limit. It’s what we do. As Celtic fans,we worry that the wheels have come off whenever we witness a performance that falls below the norm. It’s what we do.

As Celtic fans,we live in a constant maelstrom of boundless optimism and deep apprehension. But the highs are many and the lows are few. What was it Fergus reminded us of? Oh,aye. It is not always easy being a Celtic supporter, but it is always worthwhile.

Just Sayin’,

I’d think that it we turn up with the right attitude, the rest should take care of itself.

I can understand why some feel this is one of the biggest games we will have played in years.

It could also turn what is a really good season into one that could be truly memorable.

A double + champions league latter stages = great season.

A treble and possible champions league last eight (?) = one of our best season’s in my lifetime.

Let’s hope we turn up ready to fly out the traps at the first whistle, possibly score an early goal and make the night a joy to watch.

I may be quietly confident, but I’m also starting get the butterflies in the old belly!

Just win Celtic!!

Make

Another great lead article, and nothing to disagree with whatsoever.

However, I would like to put a slightly different slant upon things, from a personal point of view.

With the changes within the footballing landscape, especially nowadays, league titles can be won in the preparation work undertaken during the summer, for the season ahead?
Done reasonably well, even if we left room for improvement.
Started the season in sparkling form, and looking like another treble and invincible season was on the cards, yet again.
The wheels have come off that though process now, even if the treble still remains intact at present.

We are in the month of January, where change can be made.
Made even more complicated with throwing 2 extra CL games into the equation.
As humans, and especially football supporters, we want change when we see things we don’t like, blame those for not reaching the expected standards, and looking for someone else to put things right, especially moreso when not in a position to do so yourself.

Learnt a very hard way, that 3 can be a magical number, and applies especially to our club.

We entered Scottish football, when not wanted.
We competed while being cheated.
We conquered despite everything put in our way, and still do.

The scum are becoming less relevant in each passing season at present, so our attention is turning moreso towards CL. The same theory applies, as we remain the only club capable of competing at CL level, so should be to strong for what anything Scottish football has to offer. But that doesn’t apply in one off cup matches.
So even with our attention towards the CL the same 3 outlook could be applied imo.

We enter the CL without a Scottish team being really recognised.
We competed despite being vastly out muscled in financial terms.
We dream that another “67” could be achieved, despite the obstacles that we face, because that is the club that we are, and always will be.

So in my book,
Criticism is OK
Abuse isn’t
And aware some people could class Criticism as Abuse when it comes regarding our club, that means so much to us all.

This is a brilliant site to express such matters regarding our club, added with such intelligent points of view, with respect shown, and hope that remains intact.
For Bobby and mahe you have created something very special, along with the contributions from so many, and hope our club follows suit.
Not just for the remainder of this season, but well beyond also imo?

BB,
I was there in the summer. The train from the city centre is straightforward and it’s a twenty minute walk through a lovely park to get there. Unfortunately I can’t remember the name of the train station we got off at but your hotel will know. When you get there look for the security guard and he’ll let you in the changing rooms and up the tunnel to walk out just as the lions did. He was a cracking guy.
When we went plenty of people got taxis to and from the city centre and it wasn’t too dear.
Enjoy. It’s an absolute pilgrimage.

My understanding of the CL rules are that both Dane Murray and Johnny Kenny can be registered as B list team players.
Also believe that they can be registered at any time, with meeting the criteria involved for a B list player.
If true, which I’m not certain about, could mean both are eligible for the remaining 2 CL matches?

Fairly certain that they wouldn’t be regarded as any of the 3 changes allowed within our CL squad, once we officially qualify for the knockout phase

Bada Bing,

Get the Train to Cascais from the centre of Lisbon (runs along the coast) and get off at Cruz Quebrada. Cross the tracks and head down to your left then right up to main road, it’s quite derelict.

Cross the main road and onto Av. Pierre de Coubertin. Follow this up for about a mile (well it seemed like it in 2017). The Stadium is on the Left.

It is a nice walk, if fit, and there are lots of sport facilities in the area.

Been 3 x Times and it’s Magnificent.

I liked Lisbon and the marina/ port bit has plenty of good restaurants but my best advice would be to take a day trip to Sintra. Beautiful place with lots of wee side streets with cafes and bars. It was a great way to spend the day. Just get a train. It takes around 40 minutes. I had a delicious custard tart and a tea, mr ATOB had a coffee and a toastie. 8 euros. Can’t argue with that!!

All these suggestions re Lisbon, make me want to visit. I have been to Porto which reminded me of my former home, St John’s, Newfoundland. It is built up a hill from the harbour. On the other side of the river(Douro, I think) is another town called Gaia. Together these two urban areas, Porto Gaia, result in the country name, Portugal.

Food in Porto was too creamy for me, even the mashed potatoes sat in a bed of cream. Perhaps, Lisbon is different in its cuisine.

Plus rumours gaining traction of Barry from Villa, (who we’ve supposedly put a bid in for), he was once at West Brom, then Barcelona, then to Villa, but he’s been loaned out recently to a few clubs, such as Stockport where he scored 25 goals in 46 games, so he might be keen to try up here at the prospect of CL football.

It will depend on Villa as they initially forked out £1m odds for him, but their history shows they usually want top money for non first team youngsters.

Hi Bada:
Just to add to the Lisbon comments:
The train to Cascais leaves from Cais do Sodre station. Regular trains during the day.
If you stop off at Belem, visit the Maritime Museum. Magnificent.

In Lisbon, go for a wander in the historic Moorish district, the Alfama. It is superb. If you get lost ( and you will ) just go downhill at every crossroad, and you will be back in the City Center.
If you like seafood, the meals are excellent.
Beware of pickpockets on crowded trams. Just make sure yer wallet or cash is inaccessible ( LEGGY and FRODSHAMS BHOY can advise you on that.🤣😅😂 )

Super Bock and Sagres are excellent beers. ‘Bom Dia’ is ‘ Good Morning’ and ‘Obrigado’ is ‘Thank You’ ( if you’re male) ‘Obrigada’ if female.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #33 DUNDEE 3 CELTIC 3 (McCOWAN, YANG, ENGELS)*

Good evening, friends.
Just returned from a wee mini break in sunny Anstruther and only caught fleeting moments of the game through the bottom of several glasses. It’s so long ago I’ve assumed that no-one neds another match report so it’s straight to the results!
We have now played 33 games this season, winning 24, drawing 7 and losing 2. We have scored 91 and conceded 27 (domestically it’s 81-17 and in Europe it’s 10-10). Thank you so much to the 55 who voted this time around. Records continue to be broken but unfortunately this one is for the lowest voting turnout of the season so far.  The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 6
Johnston*: 15
Carter-Vickers: 3
Trusty: 0
Taylor: 21
McGregor: 1
McCowan: 28
Bernardo: 0
Kyogo*: 46
Idah: 0
Yang: 11
Engels: 14
Hatate: 0
Kuhn*: 20
Palma: 0
Valle: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Dundee are –
Kyogo – 5 points
McCowan – 4 points
Taylor – 3 points
Kuhn – 2 points
Johnston – 1 point

And the overall positions after 32 games played are –
54 points – Kuhn
41 points – Bernardo, Engels, Scales
36 points – Hatate, Schmeichel
38 points – Maeda
33 points – McGregor
29 points – Trusty
24 points – Kyogo
23 points – Johnston A, McCowan
22 points – Carter-Vickers
19 points – Kyogo, Taylor, Valle
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest, Yang
3 points – Welsh
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

Next up it’s a game in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup. A home tie this Saturday against Kilmarnock, kick off 5.30pm.
