Once more into the breach

I recall about a decade ago closely following a certain Dublin based MMA fighter,,if he beats ‘him’ he’s the real deal I recall thinking, opponent after opponent. That’s actually a bit unfair, at some stage you’ve gotta call it,,,and I’ve reached that juncture with our current team and manager.
If we dismantle Germans, if the Italians can’t beat us, if we batter the Slovaks, whilst being an unstoppable force at home,,,at some stage the decision needs made about whether we are a very good side or not.
Tonight’s the night to settle it.

This is a fearful fixture, for to take any points shall force Celtic to raise their game and forgo any sense of being the matchday favourites within touching distance of a last 16 slot. It’s a tricky fixture given Brugge arrive with confidence alongside nothing to fear having beaten much richer teams than ourselves enroute to this massive fixture. Its sprinkled with intrigue for both sides look like they are playing a level above themselves in Europe this season, and naturally that cannot last, earth awaits with a bump.

I’m sure the Slovan and Leipzig ties were great affairs, but this tie in particular captures my imagination for the simple fact it’s so unpredictable. I get the feeling it would take a monumental effort to win, while being a monumental mistake to expect to win. I foresee an incredibly hard game, with both teamshape and individual performances equally important. I imagine the fine margins being decisive,,the first to have an opposition player on ice, the first to force a player into becoming a passenger not a contributor etc. We’ve displayed different colours in this continental campaign, and to emerge with the points must take a little bit from each game so far,,the mindset of Italy, the pluckiness of Red Bull, the drive shown against Bratislava.

I watched the Brugge vs Villa highlights and saw what I view as our Belgium doppelganger. Both have young exciting managers playing a 4-3-3, tricky wing play feeds the striker or trailing midfielder, central midfield easy to bypass, both score lots of goals.
Their positives also include drilled set pieces.
Their negatives include the fact they ship way too many goals, over a goal a game domestically,,they can be physical and silly leading to cards,,they tend to get cut open like a knife through butter.

I could bring up ‘wilting in the atmosphere’ or their 44 year old gaffer being clueless to alter a game when it’s getting away from his side,,but I know nothing and such beliefs would be grasping at straws. It’s true we have a tendency to start games slowly, but it’s also true the manager has a great knack for gee-ing the players up for the BIG games, and under the lights backed by the crowd the team generally responds.

I’d certainly start Arne Engels against his compatriots, for the old Jim Bowen ‘here’s a look at what you could have won’ factor,,,I hope he grabs the game by the scruff of the neck.

But I cannot call it, the only result that would surprise is a goalless draw. I’m off work (thankfully) and will be watching live, but anything could happen here.
It would be so Celtic-like to get beaten by the ‘lesser light’, but this team is as likely to romp home.
I’m stumped on this one, and I’m really looking forward to it.
Up The Hoops!

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.
⭐️👏☘️👍🍾
That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.
Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.
Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.

Rather unfair to put out Peter Lawwell’s side without putting Stewart Regan’s response.
Not unforgivable, just very partial…

/=/=
The response of SFA and UEFA in May 2012 is not known.
That letter to Regan cc Infantino only surfaced in 2017 after Supreme Court ruled Rangers use of ebts unlawful.

It was part of a chain made public in 2017 with Regans approval.

What is important is the Celtic never mentioned the May 2012 letter to requisitioners at all during meetings up to 2017.
That letter would have told the sceptical requisitioners that Celtic were active but it was never mentioned.

The natural follow up would have been what was reply from both especially Infantino.

I think that is where PL was reined in by UEFA not outsmarted as BMCUW reckons but told it was not in UEFAs interest to investigate for fear of compensation claims from clubs cheated.

PL often said UEFA were not interested but never said why.

I’ll dig out the chain of letters of 2017 that were published after Supreme Court rules Rangers use of ebts was unlawful.

The inference that I was hiding something I resent as the context was a reply to BP.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Brugge will be a stern test.

The Leipzig performance is the template for home games.
Fluid attack, well spaced, disciplined, mobile midfield with a solid defence behind. And a keeper to keep us in the game at key moments.
We have the guile and pace to beat teams at/ around our level.
In terms of our Euro aspirations I’d say Brugge is in that category. One to at least match and hopefully better.
A solid pot 2 team, finding form, with a coefficient double ours. ( 64 – 32).

Should be a really good barometer for where we are/ where we are heading.
Out the 5 games played we will have met all 4 pot 1 and 2 teams. On paper our most difficult games.

However, this new format is confounding a lot of teams who would usually expect to match their rankings. I like the idea that every game matters. A win propels you up the table, just as a defeat can send you sliding down.
I think it’s a vast improvement on before.
.

Some Pot 1 and 2 giants who are not getting things all their own way might not agree.

You can read the chain of letters released in 2017 at

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-reveal-letters-sent-sfa-11138110

They were also published on Celtic Web site but not easy to find. However the DR covers the context and Regans stance in 2017.

What is not known is his and Infantino’s reply in 2012.
Infantino’s reply is still an unknown but apart from the compensation angle UEFA were not squeaky clean in Sept 2011 when they verbally accepted a false monitoring submission from Rangers re the overdue payable and excused them from providing future financial forecast as required 6 months before administration.

FFP was also Infantino’s work and SFA and Rangers drove a horse and cart through it. Not something he would welcome being public.

I’m only interested in getting at the truth, not defending PL which is why I resented your post as it suggests I was defending him.

It is a pity that the distrust of PL spills over into distrust of myself because of the understandable dislike for PL.

Apart from the genuine SFA Reform motive, when Celtic announced their response to Res12 in AGM 2013 papers I knew PL had misled me.
So a personal motivation was to expose that.
I think Res12 did that so who is the rope and who is the dope?

On CL match days this season
Bratislava….hopeful we can get a good start but nervous given our form of last few years

Dortmund….strangely ok given the way we have started the season, how we blew Bratislava away and given the Germans iffy domestic form. Whilst trying to remember they were CL finalists.

Atalanta….absolutely shitting bricks after the Dortmund doing and the realisation that we are way off it at this level trying to play our own game

Leipzig….Hopeful of another point after that heroic display in Bergamo last time but it’s not a game we had earmarked for points anyway

Brugge…absolutely buzzing with 3 or 4 points more than expected at this stage and the realisation that we are actually a very good team. Three home wins on the trot. Win tonight and it will be hard to temper any thoughts of top 8. But….they see us exactly as we see them. It could go either way but of all the games so far, for the first time I can say the excitement by far out trumps the trepidation,

I closed the book on forgiveness last night with McCaff.

He asked questions I responded.

The subject of forgiveness was Celtic related in terms of ending division but perhaps readers are OK with status quo as it gives us something to moan about whilst doing nothing to tackle what we moan about.

My mistake was thinking enough complainers would support attempts at bringing about change but I was wrong.

Thing is my post on any subject get read by more than the addressees and what I write might just help someone unknown now or in the future who has been wronged.

That has happened in the past so it would be a pity to stop.

There is always the scroll button.

Looking forward to the game this evening, however, I’m anticipating a nervy affair. I hope BR starts Bernardo , but he’s not going to drop an £11m signings, so need to accept that it’ll likely be Engels from the off.

One thing is for certain , we cannot start the first half the way we did aboth Killie and the Diet Huns….. affording just short of 20 shots on goal across those two first halves. Brugge will kill us if we do so.

The midfield needs to be near perfect tonight , so no passengers, no shying away from the dirty work. The defence, especially Taylor or Valle need to be alert to the wing play and Kyogo’ needs to bury his chances up front when presented.

Brugge represent a completely different game plan and mindset for Celtic tonight, fans need to be patient and understanding, especially if they score. I hope we win, but I’ll not be disappointed with a point if we put in a performance.

Bring it on.

====
You miss my point. I KNEW Celtic weren’t playing with straight bat as soon as their response to Res12 was made in 2013 AGM papers to vote Res12 down.

The Adjournment solution rather than vote against Res12 was suggested by Celtic to prevent the CF material PL already had from me going public. To vote Res 12 down risked that material going public after the AGM, the last thing PL would want, so I was happy to go into the long grass as
that adjournment allowed the requisitioners to ask questions of SFA and so uncover bit by bit, like peeling an onion, what did place at SFA and UEFA in March and Sept 2011 iro the overdue payable.

As I said you did not have enough information to reach your rope a dope conclusion and you are not alone but things are not always what they appear.

Good leader today. I agree it would be a mistake to expect to win this one.

Brugge are no mugs and in recent seasons their record is better than ours. They have shown +ve consistency.

On the other hand we demonstrate -ve consistency. Until recently expectations have been low (of achieving a positive result).

The good news is we look like we are turning a corner…Bratislava are novices at this level and not a good team …and even I thought we could get the 3 points that night. What was exciting was the manner of victory! That was enjoyable and encouraging.

Dortmund simply crushed that feeling. No matter what happens those Goals Against will have an impact on our performance/placing this term. Unforgivable display, a shocking lack of awareness of the impact of shipping so many goals.

The question now, were those subsequent results based on our improving tactics, ‘form’ or ‘off-nights’ for Atalanta and Leipzig? Looking at the table now Atalanta had a bad nite by their standards. Leipzig in the other hand are playing to form in this year’ competition.

So, was it just ‘chance’ or ‘luck’ that worked in our favour? A welcome change, and probably overdue.

Or, are we approaching +ve ‘consistency’?

When the ties were published I had Bratislava as probably our only Win. With Young Boys our next best bet with a possible draw in Zagreb. Defeats in all other games on the card.

7 points and out!

So now agree with others. It’s not the end of the world if we don’t beat Brugge tonite. Both teams will probably revert to a more cagey posture at times, as any win almost guarantees next phase. A lot at stake!

My main point is we will not be demonstrating consistent improvement if we don’t take 3 points at home. Thereby, consigning Atalanta & Leipzig results as outliers – hope a statto can correct or tidy that opinion – but it’s the best I can draw from the information atm.

Aye, we have an easier game, only one, to follow and as I don’t expect any more than a point, at very best in Zagreb, then we go into Young Boys game really needing the 3 points.
Maybe a ‘do or die’ fixture.

Our record in those ain’t good.

With heart ruling head, Brendan might give us all a nite to remember at Villa, it’s that type of fixture.…don’t feel we should be relying on it.

Great to be actively involved at this level again, and as others have said the format makes every game so much more engaging. Can’t remember watching so many games and round-ups.

Have a great, great nite!

I’ve seen a lot of debate in various places regarding Engels v Bernardo and kyogo v Idah.

A lot of it is based on the impact Paulo and Adam have had as subs.

i think it is arguably easier to come on fresh against tired teams and make an impact than perhaps it is when starting.
Kyogo for example exhausts defence both physically and mentally with his constant movement. Even if he doesn’t score he makes Adam’s job a lot easier. In my view that’s why Adam has an impressive strike rate. However when he starts I don’t think he is anywhere near as effective.
Engels and Bernardo is closer to call as they are both effective starters, Our young Belgian does a power of running off the ball which again tires teams and makes it easier for the likes of Bernardo coming on.

it just shows the importance of the full match day squad but I think there’s a reason why some are effective starters and some are effective finishers.

Superbru Round 13 update

In a week where Sevco dropped points, Aberdeen got beat and Hibs didn’t totally Hibs it last night, it should have been hard to garner points but a few managed to defy the odds even though twenty-one of us got 2 points or less.

Those defying the odds like Clement holding on to his job were:-

  1. Hot Smoked- 12 pts
  2. Mouldy67- 10.5 pts
  3. The class of 67- 8.5 pts

Stranger still was another top 5 appearance by current holder of the QNQS 2023/24 Superbru Dunderheid of the Year, Friesdorfer. I think a Stewards Enquiry or drug test is called for.

These scores look pretty impressive when you see the bottom group in this round:-

66- 70th- Nawlite, Call me Gerry, Bognorbhoy, Hamilton Tim & rebuswad- all on 1pt
57-65th- Greenpinata, Big Archie, celtic Mac, mckenna_88, Por Cierto, James Cant, Celticrollercoaster, Spootiemad & Hutchybhoy- 1.5 pts

This leaves the overall Leaderboard as:-

  1. Cosy Corner Bhoy- 85 pts (with age comes wisdom obviously)
  2. Hopeful Hoops- 84.5 pts
  3. Gaz- 83.5 pts

I recently advised that, given that it was his birthday, the women of the family should let The Token Tim fill in his own predictions as a birthday gift. He has now fallen down to 4th place- Just Sayin’😀

At this rate- he’ll soon be reaching the level of :-

68th- BelmontBrian63- 51.5 pts
69th- An. Tearmann- 50.5 pts
70th- Jonny the Tim- 49 pts

Our next deadline is Saturday 30th November with four matches at 3 pm and two more to follow on the Sunday.

Good luck to you all and can anyone in the Greater Tayside area carry out a dope test on Friedorfer?

I won’t be too down hearted if we only manage to get a point from Brugge.

Some of our future opponents may be out of contention before we face them, which might mean there are many more points to be had after Brugge.

Still think 10pts will be the magic number.

When our Champions League fixtures came out my own expectations were that we would win Game 1, lose the next 2 and hopefully get at least a draw with Leipzig, giving us 4 points, but possibly 6. I next thought that if we could go on to beat Brugge, then Young Boys we could be on 10 points going into our last game against Villa. If we were to win tonight (and the bookies do have us as slight favourites) then to have amassed 10 points with 3 games still to come would be a real achievement. Win tonight and we can realistically start thinking about a top 16 place, rather than most folks’ initial hope that we are aiming for 24th.
Can’t wait!
