The Way Of The World
Morning,all.
I suppose I could use today’s article to have a casual wee smirk at the fifteen point gap we now have at the top of the table. Or use the fact that the only win in five for our rivals came when they spanked us last week to have a wee pop at the manager for his tactics on the day. But I won’t. Nor will I mention tomorrow’s match-at Ross County, which will be a difficult one in very poor conditions-as that is MAHE’s usual topic of choice for the Saturday article.
No, I think it’s maybe time we addressed the issue of the packed schedule, with particular reference to the logjam either side of Christmas and the effects it has on the finances of the supporters. Not to mention their enthusiasm, given that conditions around this time of year tend to be anything but clement. (Sorry, I said I wouldn’t mention the Huns.) Even in the milder temperatures leading up to Christmas, it was blowing a gale at virtually every game. Hardly conducive to playing The Beautiful Game-in fact, I remember Kyogo running onto a through ball and having to turn back to get it when it was blown behind him! But is there an alternative?
Well,Celtic are as good an example as any, given that we have our European adventure to deal with AND that we played every round in The League Cup. I’ve done some back-of-fag-packet research on free midweeks for us from 4th August to 12 April, the only fixtures scheduled so far. Believe it or not, there are six of them before the end of September and one in December, along with another seven from 2nd February. That’s a lot of leeway to space games out in anyone’s book. And it doesn’t include the four international breaks either-for obvious reasons. So why doesn’t the SPFL use them?
Well, there’s a number of reasons that I can think of. And this is where our Brains Trust of readers come in,because I’m bound to have missed one or two. Firstly, the ones in August don’t count as they are set aside for European qualifying. While it’s true that we didn’t need to qualify, other sides did-and next season that will include us. And there’s another downside to European competition when it comes to scheduling. While UEFA no longer prevent countries from playing on European nights, they are still prevented from advance scheduling of matches on those dates. After all, we can’t have a full round of SPFL fixtures if there is a possibility of even one club still being in European competition. They are fine though with the playing of previously postponed matches, which is very decent of them!
Speaking of previously postponed matches, ours against the two Dundee sides, on Wednesday and next Tuesday, are rescheduled due to League Cup cancellations-so you can see how quickly those free midweeks can suddenly add to the hectic schedules we are witnessing. And of those midweeks to come with nothing scheduled? Virtually all of them are for the three European rounds leading to the semi-finals at the end of April.
So, thanks in no small part to UEFA/FIFA scheduling club and international matches for approximately twenty midweeks, there is little space in the calendar for anything else. Even in England, the home of the first competitive trophy (though not the oldest, btw) in The FA Cup, they have now banned replays in it because of the fixture chaos. Yet some countries still manage to have a midwinter break, so how do they do that?
In the main, those countries have fewer league games. Some with 34 games and 18 team leagues, and some with 30 games and 16 teams. Scotland did away with its 18 team league fifty years ago now, and we have struggled to get the right formula since. Starting with 10 teams playing each other four times, then 12 teams doing the same-which certainly wouldn’t be possible now!-then the current 12 teams and a split giving us 38 games. The only viable option is to increase the number of teams to 18 again, and I don’t think there is any point in even going there. The SPL struggles with enough low-quality fare and ramshackle stadia as it is, and we certainly don’t want more of it.
Seriously, I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. I’ve certainly mentioned the packed fixture list often enough. And I’m struggling to come up with anything. Hopefully some of you fine people can shame me with some answers! I suggested yesterday in a comment that we could move the September international break to December, which would give us a chance at two September midweeks plus a December break for those players not on international duty. And it’s still the best I can come up with! While that helps the players AND the fans, I should be embarrassed that it’s the best I can do, but I’m not. Because the power-brokers have made a grab for everything they can, and left no room for anyone else.
And as we know, that is just the way of the world these days.

442? Brendan is so inflexible!
Al-Gettaefaq, led by Slippy G and the Cockney barrow boy, slipped to yet another home loss in the Saudi Pro League. Despite a goal from Wijnaldum, and a 96th minute equalizer from the spot from Moussa Dembele, they succumbed 2-3 to a 100th minute winner, leaving them 11th of 18 in the league, 21 points behind the leaders and 3 points above the drop zone.
Good to see.😊
Brendan presser today.

I am often not sure what posters mean when they say Celtic play a 4-3-3 system. Celtic start in a 4-3-3 formation, but the system bears only superficial similarity to a 4-3-3 system, as used by Brazil in the ‘60’s. And most famously by Holland and Ajax in the ‘70’s. Inverted wingers was/ is a common feature, as it was for Perp’s Barcelona team or Klopp’s Liverpool team. But all of those teams had a key player in the middle of the mid 3 who sat back and could dictate lay (Barca had Xavi, Iniesta who could all play that role, but also could count on Thiago for heft in the middle). But a key feature of that Barca team, and of most top 4-3-3 teams, was the use of triangles, units of three, to overload areas, both in attack and in defence. Celtic dont use triangles. It camps across the 18 yard box, and plays 2 lines of 5. Not 4-3-3.

Where is AH?
AH, I know you and I have agreed not to respond to each other’s posts, but I hope you are well.
It is not like you to be absent without permission.
If you can, get back on here.
PS this is not a love note, let’s continue our agreement, but where are you?

======================
Just started another round of chemotherapy this week Rebus and that has kept me occupied.
Sometimes commenting on SC is part of my therapy when my energy levels are ok.
Right now not really worth a blaw on a ragman’s trumpet and that fluctuates, but I try to look in when I can to read all the posts and occasionally reply if I think I have something to add.
LIke saying thanks for asking. 🙂
UPDATE: Talks between Celtic & Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney are believed to be progressing well.
It’s understood both parties are keen to reach a pre-contract agreement, with 27yo willing to take a significant pay cut to return to Celtic

Rebus,
Enjoying your patter, may it snow more often.
Regarding another left back, it’s very tricky due to KT will be 1st choice. Doesn’t suit a young player who needs gametime, doesn’t suit a current starter to hit the bench and begin losing what made Celtic think he was good enough,,,I think it suits a Joe/Kasper style veteran out for one last hoorah.
Hail Hail
Evening troops, been out hiking in the Alicante hills today, in glorious weather.
Tomorrow will be a tough game, but I think we can introduce some fresh faces from B team ….I mean we’re 15 clear for goodness sake. It’s a luxury few teams can imagine.
Not sure what will happen this window, I think it’ll be a loan at best, even though we require players in every area.
Rebus
As squad building goes, Rodgers has chosen a formation and a style of play, where he gets what he hopes to be the best from his players, that suits the style of team that we are going to be.
At present it’s in the 433, and can’t argue it’s the wrong set up, with the success it has gained to date this season?
Will that remain the case going forward?
I haven’t a clue, but thinking we can start to become a bit stale now, after the same team set up in operation for going on 4 seasons now, but going on 4 league titles in a row gained?
However, tomorrow now is a totally different story, with 4 of our 5 wide options unavailable.
So a guessing game is in place as to what our team set up will be now?
With 4 strikers available, it looks like having to go with a front 2, but what combination?
Think maybe a kyogo with Johnny Kenny to start, and be replaced with the idah/Cummings later within the game?
Don’t see the need for a back 4, when a 3 would do, and plenty of options available to ourselves also.
Think a Trusty, CCV and AJ or ralston, should be plenty good enough, and still scales available also within the squad?
Midfield is the potential problem areas, with a split midfield in operation moreso these days.
With a back 3, then 2 in front in Calmac and Paulo sitting in front, and still able to create overloads through the centre, with the lack of width within our team.
Still allows for Engels, Hatate, McCowan, yang, and valle with 3 from 5 and 2 subs.
Preferred option for myself, would be starting with yang, Hatate and Engels.
Would be like a 3232 formation, but also allows subs to be introduced easier into the game also imo?
Might mean giving Taylor the day off, but earned a rest also

EVENING ALL AND JIM AND MAGUA,,just noticed, the famous glesga rainjurs dropped some more points, wont sleep tonight worrying about that😎😎 hope you all are well, there must be some nice rainjurs supporters out there, let me know if you find any👍😎😎😎
Kieran will bring a bit more balance and physicality to the team/defence.
The other side with C-V & AJ is solid and rarely lose a physical battle.
Hence why teams concentrate on attacking our weaker side.
All things being equal we would be looking like having a really top class defensive back 5 next season.
Think KT will have fun playing in this team

AULDHEID you keep hanging on, if I could bring back time I would never have spilled your bovril at the Vojvodina game👍👍
MIT,
I agree Celtic lineup as 433 and revert to it if pressed back. IMHO, Celtic play 343 with GT as the extra midfielder, sometimes even the two wide players drop back into midfield. The result is 361 with Kyogo usually the isolated striker. I have two main issues with this. Firstly, GT is not a very good midfielder. We have better in the squad. Why not select one of them and play 3 at the back. Effectively we are usually left with 3 at the back anyway.
The second issue is neither Idah, nor Kyogo are suited to being the isolated striker. Kyogo is the better hope but somebody needs to loft passes over the top, and/or play through balls to him. To me this suggests we need someone in the hole that can do this. McCowan and Engels are the most likely. Hatate..nope, and Calmac already has enough on his plate ensuring that the inverted LB does not cause mayhem at the back.
As for Idah, I’d try him on the wing. This is a good time to try it…we are short of wide players. Against DU he had a good run down the RHS into the penalty area. Maybe this should be explored.
Anyway, I have taken up too much space on the blog.
Steve, we all like to see these special moments from special players, even if they are not winning moments.
AH, sounds brutal, my best wishes go out to you,
Rebus
went to ardrossan once it was closed, but saltcoats was open, BTW better beach ,sorry sol😎😎😎
Mahe,
Penrice is not a young player. He is 26 and has probably peaked.
As BR says, it is now a squad game. Tierney will need a break. Not sure Taylor will be happy with it, but something in my water tells me he will get a new contract.
Rebus
On a totally different topic.
I think it’s absolutely shocking that someone like that cringe worthy McCoist gets an OBE for rabbiting on the same mundane pish as a commentator, while guys like Lou Macari get absolutely no respect or commendation with his work and dedication to homeless people.
ASWGL lou is a TIM like you and myself, they dont like us,,well feck them nearly said fuck there😎😎😎

Barbados is one of the most beautiful islands. Loved my time there. Went next door to Sandy Lane to have a chat with Dermott Desmond, but they said he was too busy to see me, as he was in a meeting with some big shot …Big Packy, I think they said his name was!
BP
although born in Paisely, I was never a St. Mirren fan. Was more of a Killie fan as my uncle was the captain when I was a kid. Although I do remember having an Action Man with a Celtic kit, and not a Killie one

Big Packy was at Simon Cowell’s place in Barbados as a contestant on X-Factor, but he didn’t get through to the live shows as Cowell felt there was no audience for someone playing the spoons. 😂

I love Celtic, they’re the only team I can watch a full game on TV, ….but flicking over there and watched a bit of Villa v WHU, the speed of play is unreal….it’s like watching a different sport.
Craig 76
I’d guess Celtic, Oldco Huns and Queens Park.
