The Way Of The World
Morning,all.
I suppose I could use today’s article to have a casual wee smirk at the fifteen point gap we now have at the top of the table. Or use the fact that the only win in five for our rivals came when they spanked us last week to have a wee pop at the manager for his tactics on the day. But I won’t. Nor will I mention tomorrow’s match-at Ross County, which will be a difficult one in very poor conditions-as that is MAHE’s usual topic of choice for the Saturday article.
No, I think it’s maybe time we addressed the issue of the packed schedule, with particular reference to the logjam either side of Christmas and the effects it has on the finances of the supporters. Not to mention their enthusiasm, given that conditions around this time of year tend to be anything but clement. (Sorry, I said I wouldn’t mention the Huns.) Even in the milder temperatures leading up to Christmas, it was blowing a gale at virtually every game. Hardly conducive to playing The Beautiful Game-in fact, I remember Kyogo running onto a through ball and having to turn back to get it when it was blown behind him! But is there an alternative?
Well,Celtic are as good an example as any, given that we have our European adventure to deal with AND that we played every round in The League Cup. I’ve done some back-of-fag-packet research on free midweeks for us from 4th August to 12 April, the only fixtures scheduled so far. Believe it or not, there are six of them before the end of September and one in December, along with another seven from 2nd February. That’s a lot of leeway to space games out in anyone’s book. And it doesn’t include the four international breaks either-for obvious reasons. So why doesn’t the SPFL use them?
Well, there’s a number of reasons that I can think of. And this is where our Brains Trust of readers come in,because I’m bound to have missed one or two. Firstly, the ones in August don’t count as they are set aside for European qualifying. While it’s true that we didn’t need to qualify, other sides did-and next season that will include us. And there’s another downside to European competition when it comes to scheduling. While UEFA no longer prevent countries from playing on European nights, they are still prevented from advance scheduling of matches on those dates. After all, we can’t have a full round of SPFL fixtures if there is a possibility of even one club still being in European competition. They are fine though with the playing of previously postponed matches, which is very decent of them!
Speaking of previously postponed matches, ours against the two Dundee sides, on Wednesday and next Tuesday, are rescheduled due to League Cup cancellations-so you can see how quickly those free midweeks can suddenly add to the hectic schedules we are witnessing. And of those midweeks to come with nothing scheduled? Virtually all of them are for the three European rounds leading to the semi-finals at the end of April.
So, thanks in no small part to UEFA/FIFA scheduling club and international matches for approximately twenty midweeks, there is little space in the calendar for anything else. Even in England, the home of the first competitive trophy (though not the oldest, btw) in The FA Cup, they have now banned replays in it because of the fixture chaos. Yet some countries still manage to have a midwinter break, so how do they do that?
In the main, those countries have fewer league games. Some with 34 games and 18 team leagues, and some with 30 games and 16 teams. Scotland did away with its 18 team league fifty years ago now, and we have struggled to get the right formula since. Starting with 10 teams playing each other four times, then 12 teams doing the same-which certainly wouldn’t be possible now!-then the current 12 teams and a split giving us 38 games. The only viable option is to increase the number of teams to 18 again, and I don’t think there is any point in even going there. The SPL struggles with enough low-quality fare and ramshackle stadia as it is, and we certainly don’t want more of it.
Seriously, I’ve been thinking about this for a while now. I’ve certainly mentioned the packed fixture list often enough. And I’m struggling to come up with anything. Hopefully some of you fine people can shame me with some answers! I suggested yesterday in a comment that we could move the September international break to December, which would give us a chance at two September midweeks plus a December break for those players not on international duty. And it’s still the best I can come up with! While that helps the players AND the fans, I should be embarrassed that it’s the best I can do, but I’m not. Because the power-brokers have made a grab for everything they can, and left no room for anyone else.
And as we know, that is just the way of the world these days.

I remembered seeing that QP won it a lot in the early days of the tournament, so thought it was a good call.
As a follow up to Craig’s question, here’s a related one.
Queens Park appeared in 2 English FA Cup finals, but who beat them on both occasions?
Sol Kitts
I’ll say Aston Villa and West Ham
Evening guys
Please spare a wee thought for those less fortunate than us at this time of the season. I just heard this sad little exchange earlier:
Q. WTF has happened to Connor Barron. It all started so promisingly!
A. NOTHING has happened to him. He is an average player who was hyped up to be great cos we needed something to cling to!
Yip, and even Steve Clarke bought into the media hype.

ANYBODY WANT TO HEAR THE VOJVODINA STORY
—————————————
With all due respect, mate, I really think you’ve squeezed as much juice or mileage out of that short story as you’re gonna get. It’s now a deid duck, or even deid parrot. A few other things happened in 1967.

Iniquitous IV😊

0/2.
Clue: it was the same club on both occasions (in consecutive years).

I’ll go for stoke this time
Brilliant goal from Villa. Incredible speed.
Craig 76
Sorry mate, still not got it. I’ll put you out of your misery at the end of the game at Villa.

I would say it had to be one of the early English clubs so
Bolton Wanderers or Blackburn maybe if they were old enough.
Superb shot from distance strikes upright for Villa. Could have been third goal in 5 minutes.
Auldbhoy67
Cyber pint on its way – the answer was Blackburn Rovers (1884 & 1885).
Igamane this week:
“Like any Moroccan footballer, my dream is to pull on the Morocco national team’s shirt.
“I equally want to help my club as much as possible.
“And, as a consequence, to play for a big club in Europe.”

Thanks for the tips lhads. It’s much appreciated. Helps me to construct a holiday viewing plan. St. Pauli as well tomorrow. I hope they get whipped 🙂
Auldheid,
Keep on keeping on and when you feel up to giving us the benefit of your wisdom we shall look forward to it…. And promptly shoot it down. Only kidding 😂😂
BP,
From yesterday. I never take offence at what old people say. I think you have lived long enough to talk as much rubbish as you want.
Onion Bears have got the crayons out
Auldheid
Best wishes for your treatment.
Auldheid
Hope all goes well for you.
Craig 76
Only thing missing from Onion bares statement was demand from board that only refs from Boclair Academy can officiate their games!
I thought just sayin’s suggestion is a good one plus get rid of the league cup. There’s 10 games approx less a season right there.
Auldheid wish you well old friend
BP I’m right here.
Beat wishes to you and Joan.
If only Celtic PLC had condemned them to the dustbin of history like Ernie said

On the subject of the article,I’ve just remembered…
UEFA decided that each of their three competitions would have a clear midweek, nothing else scheduled. For the CL and EL,it was the opening round of fixtures, while the conference had their final round clear.
That’s two midweeks ruined for no reason. They can bin that for a start.

Texas v Ohio other semi final is at 12:30 am.

A shortage of available attacking wide men has everyone guessing at our starting line up for tomorrow. Personally, I’d be surprised if BR alters the shape of the defence, given our run of 8 consecutive clean sheets in the league (excluding Jan 2nd). So I’d expect a back four to remain insitu.
Midfield to front could be 3-3 as per or, as suggested elsewhere, we could go a diamond 4 in midfield (we have 5 fit regulars) and both Kyogo and Idah starting up top.
We still have two full backs that could provide width in attacks, if need be.
One issue with this line up is that you don’t get the benefit of fresh legs upfront that comes from subbing one striker for the other. We would be relying on one if not both probably playing 90 mins, which is not ideal. Especially with another game coming up on Tuesday. You would also only have one regular midfielder on the bench (rather than the usual two) to freshen up that area later in the game. So not ideal, imo.
I hope BR sticks with 4-3-3 and starts Kyogo OR Idah, with the other replacing around the 60 mins mark. Then reverse the situation on Tuesday. That way both get 90 mins over the two games. Evening out the workload.
I think we need to start Yang out wide. He’s the only fit option that plays the position regularly. I like the idea of starting Valle wide left ahead of Taylor. McCowan could possibly come off the bench to replace Yang or Valle in the 2nd half (or Taylor, with Valle dropping back).
I thought Johnston looked jaded on Wed, so would consider starting Ralston tomorrow; if not tomorrow, then Tuesday. I’d be happy to see any three start in midfield between Calmac, Hatate, Engels and Bernardo (keeping McCowan and one other on bench for later in game).
CCV and Trusty in front of Kasper.
That’s my tuppenceworth anyway.

16,
I really enjoyed the Notre Dame game last night, their head coach is young enough to play at 39.
I’ll watch the other game tonight for sure.
Hope you’re well chief.
Hail Hail
