Cream rises
I watched the game a day later with the benefit of hindsight, intrigued by posters comments and the line-up, anxious to dissect the tweaks and individual levels of play.
That proved nigh on a thankless task due to the low side-on camera angle. It was very poor to say the least and together with the small single tier stadium, the entire affair had a bit of a Cup feel rather than a top flight game.
The lineup was a bit surprising, I was surprised to see Reo in there as he hasn’t done much recently, and I felt Greg was a certainty to prolong the arm around the shoulder approach Brendan had been showing by starting him consistently. But the big call was Kyogo on the right.
My goodness it worked a treat. Hindsight is a wonderful thing but he has all the attributes to play that role well, and whereas I see Kuhn as a shoot and score wide man, our Japanese talisman very much followed into the 6 yard box to get on the end of things, which he accomplished in each half.
But he also got involved in the play a lot more and having someone ahead of him was beneficial.
We seen a new side to him.
Brendan has a new option to call upon.
The right flank being lively doesn’t mean the left was poor, not at all. The backups were good going on excellent, especially Yang who pulled out his best game yet, and looked a proper Celtic player. He was very unlucky not to score, tracked back, crossed, passed and moved, beat a man,,,I think this proves the old football saying correct, it takes a player a half a dozen games to come upto speed. With the attack having notched up two, there was time left for the midfield to do the same, one from the spot and one from open play, Engels and Luke back on the scoresheet again. Yang played a part in both, but another player deserves praise for helping the fourth arrive.
One of the reasons Brendan was able to field his first two strikers simultaneously is because the backup third has arrived ready after actually playing and doing well elsewhere. It showed. Almost scored, instantly involved, his dangerous drive towards goal helped force the finisher.
While I thought Reo had a pretty good game including some good tackling, Arne needs a mention. He’s coming to the fore and growing into his role. Almost every game now he produces something but without being flashy, his actual striking of the ball continues to impress, slowly but surely he’s becoming the teams beating heart.
Between the Cup feel, the different players in different positions including Arne and Luke taking over from Reo and Callum as the midfield scorers, Yang and Kyogo terrorizing the flanks, Valle, Adam, Kenny,,,the game was different overall in that it just wasn’t the usual, it was a variation of Celtic that was seriously interesting, that worked on the day.
While the manager must get some kudos for that, his possession/passing game needs a mention as 3 goals from the 80th minute suggests it worked on the day. Finally, he praised the support (they were absolutely fantastic) to finally put the KT chant storm in a teacup behind everyone. Good day all around for the troops who managed to go a tremendous 18 points clear on the day. Two weeks ago Celtic were humiliated. Since then, amidst the fallout, we have responded by winning even if injury plagued, one might go so far as to say all involved have been stung into action. I’ve got that feeling again, the feeling we are going to give someone an absolute doing. How timely.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #32 ROSS COUNTY 1 CELTIC 4 (KYOGO(2), ENGELS, McCOWAN)*
Good evening, friends.
Firstly, please not the information at the end of this report concerning the voting and results for our next game in midweek.
When the team lines came out yesterday there was some debate about whether Kyogo would be one of the wingers or whether it’d be a different set up in midfield. Half an hour into the game I still had no firm idea of what our actual formation was but I did appreciate that it was working! It looked as if we were playing 3 at the back – 2 central and a left back and not worrying about the right hand side! Engels appeared to be lying far deeper allowing Short Sleeved Johnston to almost become the right winger. And switching Yang over to the left also seemed to work better.
The Ross County goalkeeper played very well and denied us 2 or 3 decent chances in the first half. Our opening goal finally came 5 minutes before half time. Kyogo came deep to the centre circle to kick off the move with a pass to Idah who backheeled it to McGregor. Out right to Johnston who delivered a perfect low cross into the 6 yard box, met by Kyogo and dispatched into the net. Half time, playing well and a goal to the good.
The second half was a really good watch as Ross County finally started to be a bit braver and came more into the game. And on 57 minutes they drew level. Johnston gave away a stonewall penalty after being caught on the wrong side of the attacker and Kasper guessed wrongly for the spot kick.
Unusually for Brendan, he waited until the 72nd minute before making any changes, with Hatate and Idah making way for McCowan and debutant Johnny Kenny. Both substitutes played well and the early signs from Kenny were very positive.
Celtic finally regained the lead on the 80th minute. Good work on the left hand side saw the recently consistent Engels curl a lovely right footed cross into the box. Kyogo’s run was timed to perfection and his bullet header was too much for the keeper.
With the 90 minutes almost up, Kyogo had one final important contribution. From the half way line on the right hand side he fired a bullet of a pass into the path of the onrushing Yang inside the Ross County box. The defender’s clumsy attempt at a tackle was nowhere near the ball and impeded Yang in the act of shooting. A clear penalty on first viewing for me but it took a 4 minute VAR intervention before the award was eventually made. Engels dispatched the 2nd attempt at the penalty after his first go was saved by the encroaching keeper – how did the linesman not notice as that is all he has to look at??
Deep into stoppage time and Celtic had our 4th goal. A good run by Kenny saw him pass up a couple of opportunities to shoot. But the ball broke kindly to McCowan in the box and Luke dispatched it from 12 yards.
A very good performance and victory on a surface that wasn’t the best as we move closer and closer to our 120th major honour
We have now played 32 games this season, winning 24, drawing 6 and losing 2. We have scored 88 and conceded 24 (domestically it’s 78-14 and in Europe it’s 10-10). We have won the League Cup and sit 15 points clear (and 30 goals ahead) at the top of the league with 16 games remaining. We remain very well placed to progress to the last 24 of this season’s Champions League. And arguably, we are only 5 games away from yet another Treble! Yes, indeed, I am focussing on the positives!
Thank you so much to the 71 who voted this time around, bang on the average turnout for the season to date. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked. Interesting that only 1 voter didn’t nominate Kyogo!!!
Schmeichel: 0

McGregor: 12
Engels*: 67
Hatate: 0

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Ross County are –

Next up it’s another away league game on Tuesday night when we face Dundee. Kick off is 8.00pm and it’s live on Sky Sports. It’s likely that me and Mrs Baldie are having a wee winter break, a couple of nights (Tuesday and Wednesday) in a secret Scottish location. So the voting for our next game will remain open until 3pm on Thursday and I’ll try to get the results out around 6pm.

I think the Huns board will be relatively happy with Baldermot.
They play well v Celtic, they have challenged us in last two cup finals, both could have went either way, they progress in Europe, they have unearthed one or two young players to sell at a profit. That’s all £££££s for the club.
The downside is his players are inconsistent and can either be brilliant or shit, depending on which way the wind blows.
I think they’ll ignore the fans and their laptop pals for now.

Good article as always, and the most interesting and very welcome feature within our play on Saturday, was there seemed like more freedom on show, for our players to express themselves better imo?
Rodgers tends to set our team up in a fairly rigid structured manner, that at times can lead to tedious football on show.
That structure was intact somewhat down our left, but valle and yang seemed more relaxed in allowed to show there values as players more so, which in turn got a better return from them?
Yet our right side without kuhn, had a totally different look about it, and couldn’t see any structure within whatsoever?
There must have been times with Engels thinking what’s going on here, with AJ going bombing ahead of him, and kyogo not stuck to the right touchline, on many occasions.
Could be regarded as organised chaos from a coaching point of view, but worked a treat with far more extra freedom on show, which in turn provided far more entertaining football on show imo?
A very surprising and welcoming approach taken by Rodgers, and this upon such a dreadful playing surface also.
As we look forward now, will such an approach be taken again tomorrow night?
Personally don’t believe that it’s worth taking a risk with Maeda or kuhn, especially with them maybe needed more so for the killie cup match, and definitely for the young boys game.
Dundee still looking a better footballing team than county, so will Rodgers take the same approach, as on show at the weekend?
Really liked seeing another dimension added to our game on Saturday, and wouldn’t mind seeing the likes again on show tomorrow night.
But there is potentially a growing beauty involved within our team now, that we don’t know what to really expect, with growing options starting to be finally installed into our team, and long may it continue imo?
Morning all,
Excellent leader Mahe and it seemed to me that we were always in control of that game. Even at 1-1, nobody panicked and just got on with getting 3 points, which they accomplished. A fine team performance 👏👏👏
A wee bit disappointed as my current run of 3/3 in Jobo’s POTY competition came to an abrupt end. ( Was on a cracking run )
Still 2/3 ( Blame that rascal Yang ) and as Meatloaf says, Two out of Three ain’t bad 😁😁😁😁
Onto Dundee tomorrow and looking forward to it already 💚
Enjoy your Monday everyone.

Decent summary Mahe.
Although, I disagree on Hatate, who seems to be turning into another Ntcham.

Fond hope there, Buddy! 🤣
Seems like Palma is going to Rayo Vallecano on loan.
If correct, I would assume we must have a high degree of confidence on getting another winger in this month? Or have we just handed same winger’s agent an extra negotiating boost?
I really hope we are active behind the scenes. For a perpetual moaner about typical Celtic sloth like transfer activity over the years ( absent the Ange period ) I’ve been pretty patient so far.🤣
Anybody know why we have Dundee twice in 11 days?
Not keeping up.

Afternoon
Good article though I think we all might be overdoing how good we were on Saturday. Generally good first half, poor start to the second, then recovering our poise to wind up to finish strongly. The Dundee United game on Wednesday was not dissimilar. Kyogo and Arne Engels were terrific.
I think I’ve tended to be more positive than many this season- especially post-Red Bull -but I am concerned at some things. One area of concern is Auston Trusty who, like Starfelt seems to have a careless error in him every game. I have rather gone off Scales of late so the American is probably worth sticking with. A half dozen games in a row seems essential for him and the team.
A bigger area of concern is Adam Idah who has not played well in any of his 3 recent starts. It’s a while since we had a striker who seems to have such a poor sense of where the goal is although some of his play further out is surprisingly nimble. Kyogo had his best game in over a year in Dingwall- after a 2024 in which he was frequently posted missing.
Yang did very well in the first half I thought. We have some good left footed, left-side midfielders like Bertie, Tommy Burns, John Collins and Tommo but I struggle to think of any of our left wingers who’ve also been left footed- Yogi, Bobby Lennox and Scott Sinclair were right footed for the most part. Yang faded a bit after nearly scoring early in the second half but he remained a threat. My big concern for him is that Brendan Rodgers will play him on the right when Maeda returns and Kuhn is still out. The Korean is, to date, terrible on the right- he was awful on Wednesday- but the manager does seem to prefer his inverted wingers overall. I quite liked Valle against County but remain unsure about him too. I’ve had 5 and a half seasons of being unsure about Taylor.
Tuesday is a big game for us against a decent, well managed, team. Win it and assuming R2FC wins on Wednesday – a big assumption- and we need to drop a point a game to be caught which seems unlikely- instead our rivals might give up.
It’s tempting to say it’s the only game I’m bothered about but I’d be lying- the Champions’ League looms. Failure to progress in that and our season could be a prolonged anti-climax. I am less confident of progress than I was a month ago.

Good post. I’m in general agreement with most of it. Agree that Yang looked much better, but like Idah, he does not seem to have a nose for goal. It’s a real puzzle why shooting seems anathema to some players.
I think Valle will turn out to be a really good player. He has a superb first touch, and is athletic and skillful. Very promising player.
I watched Dundee last week. With so many players out, I thought the Foe Malign would beat them easily. Well coached by Docherty, Dundee actually deserved to win. Tuesday will be a tough game.

Hi Mahe,
I enjoyed your summary of the RC game. I know what you mean about the atmosphere of the game, created by the stadium. It felt like a Junior game, Beith vs Kilbirnie Ladeside.
There are always players who will divide the fanbase. Samaras is a recent example but the phenomenon stretches way back in our football history. I recall John Hughes, big Yogi, causing both delight and despair, often in the same game!
we have quite a few of these “controversials” in our current squad. Hatate is one, Taylor, Idah, Scales, Trusty are others.
I wonder why fans arrive at polar extreme opinions on a player? Do we look for different things or place different values on certain attributes? For example, I place very high value on ball control. If a player has that, it gives them more time to do something with the ball. Of course, a player has to offer more than just good control. Yang is an example. He has good close control, but does he see what is happening around him? He goes on a run beating three players and then loses the ball, because he cannot see a pass. We love the trickery but is he effective?
Another thing that affects my evaluation is the balance of a player’s attributes. For example, a player may have shocking ball control but score a lot of goals. The latter makes more of a contribution to the team than looking nice on the ball, so said player is likely to keep his place.
The really amazing thing is that we do all of this “balancing” subconsciously, barely aware that it is happening. How highly do you value Idah’s flicks compared to his goal scoring? Such things decide how we feel about a player. Hatate can score from distance, can hit creative passes, but he loses the ball a lot. For me, the latter is more important when I am rating his performance, for others less so.
Finally, I think the number of “controversials” in our team explains our patchy performance against better teams.
Rant over. Have a great day, everyone,
Rebus

Kuhn back Maeda out
FWIW. ‘Thems culture’ is based on non tolerance consequently they have no time or constitution to develop in line with their income, as a normal club would.
Celtic’s 30 year start and dominance consumes Sevco at a faster rate than it did Rainjurz. Our bin fire Thursday caused momentary unity, when they singularly triumphantly waded 50,000 deep singing about someone else’s blood. When they come back to the real world of playing football, they flop. The wee free continuity equivalent, and yesterday’s walkabout was a parting of the ‘C’s, the men in the bowler hats, await the next Park, Easdale, King or anyone will do.
Crestfallen Scottish ‘sports editorial’ is in the permanent doldrums consequences of imbalance they helped establish and now attempt to prolong. The reporting and jubilation on their every ‘throw in’ contributes to their wildest expectations. Redevelopment is not a rational objective and now FSM keeps the lid closed on the cheating that culminated in liquidation.
Their youngsters a bi – product from the sinning of their fathers are lucky they only so far, get hit with pies divided they stood, divided they walked away, all because there’s not a team called the Glasgow Rainjurz.
Have we signed anyone yet?

Very quiet on the transfer front. I think the 15 point lead at this time has the fans and the club relaxed. Not sure that’s a good thing. I did hear the window is open till 3rd of February so still plenty of time for negotiations. It would be nice to get a wee lift from a new signing though.

My take on the current transfer window, unless we’re planning on bringing someone in that’s going straight into the team then I don’t think we’ll see much happening on the incoming front.
While the Club do brilliant work with the Foundation, on the other hand the fans are getting fleeced, right left and centre, not right

Correctimundo, ATOB. It is not a good thing. For example, Aberdeen have signed 3 players already that will go straight into their team. Puts our dilatory arthritic tortoise like moves to shame. One more week of zilcho happening at Celtic Park, and I’ll be looking for tumbleweed in Lord Lucan Nicholson’s office.
Leaving things to the last minute, as is often our wont, leads to overpaying ( Idah ), getting gazumped, or Murphy’s Law kicking in, with no time for a Plan B. We are hoping to be in the next Champions League playoff round, and we have a few erm….deficiencies to address.
If we near the end of January, and nothing has transpired, look for increasing tetchiness from Brendan. This window is also a great chance to show the contrast between ourselves and the scrofulous hillbillies south of the river.
