Distant relatives

I’m a Celtic supporter, and notice I didn’t specifically state a Glasgow Celtic supporter, there’s many different offshoots and cousins, of course I wish all in the family well. So imagine my surprise at discovering a distant relative through mere chance, and then imagine my double surprise when they gladly embraced my reaching out and corresponded.

Ill leave the good representative of West Allotment Celtic to speak for himself and the Club, and ask you to contribute to their noble cause if at all possible. Details below. The Chairman and Club Historian couldn’t have been more helpful in answering my questions, many thanks, and they will be looking in at responses.
Mahe.

1,,,Given the name and club strip, I’ll assume it was a Celtic fan(s) who founded the club. What can you tell us about your founder(s)?

Weirdly, the naming of the club was done on a whim rather than due to any allegiance to another club. In fact, “Celtic” was a strange choice given that the club is rooted in Primitive Methodism – rather a long way from the usual Catholic connotation! Despite West Allotment being a small village there had been several clubs prior to “Celtic” and most suffixes had been used up, so the founders settled on “Celtic” as it was unused and in fashion at the time (1928). Also, the green and white hoops were only adopted in the 1990s, largely because people expected us to turn up in green and white and it avoided clashes with most other clubs. Previously, the club had worn black and white stripes and, even earlier, sky blue and claret. That said, a change strip in the 1950 was green and white quarters.

2,,,Glasgow Celtic have a long and illustrious tradition of playing free flowing attacking football. Was this tradition passed down or desired to the best of your knowledge?

I think all clubs would aspire to playing flowing football but, given Allotment’s status, the style has changed to suit circumstances down the years. The home pitch, up until 1968 was called “Rowland’s Farm Ground” and it lived down to its name! Brazil ’70 would have struggled to play flowing football on it! That said, Allotment were successful on it (and away from home too). In more recent times, (mainly the “noughties”) manager Terry Mitchell had the team playing a fast, passing game that was successful in gaining the club promotion to the Northern League. Even more recently, Jay Bates led the side to a promotion, despite Covid, and the team scored a hatful of goals (last season saw wins by 10-1, 7-1 and 9-0) playing the aforementioned fast and flowing football.

3,,,The Green and White Hoops have became iconic, found worldwide, and celebrate Celtic’s Irish roots. Has West Allotment Celtic ever faced abuse or hostility due to wearing the mighty Hoops?

No we’ve never had any issues at all, but as a nomadic club we have picked up a number of distant fans partly due to the green and white hoops – we have a few that keep in touch from Ireland.

4,,,Glasgow Celtic Supporters constantly bemoan our lack of involvement in our club’s direction, there’s a long standing disconnect between fan and boardroom. How much of an input does the local community have in your club?

Interestingly enough this has been a big area of change in the last three months. In November, the club committee agreed to fold the club after hitting a financial brick wall and an engaging committee with no new people coming in to help run the club. This is where I became involved again (I was previously involved with the club ten years ago, as relatives of mine were founding members back in 1928) and proposed a very different business model that gave the community complete insight and control in partnership with my non football magazine The Football Pink. https://thefootballpink.co.uk/ Allotment has switched to a fan ownership model, with a behind the scenes documentary being filmed – full details here https://wacowners.co.uk/become-an-owner/?mepr-unauth-page=611&redirect_to=%2F This now means that individuals across the UK are joint owners of the club, giving the community more say than ever before. This particularly was noticeable when a match of ours was called off recently due to goose excrement on the pitch resulting in media coverage on Talk Sport, the Daily Mirror and local press – as a result we ran a raffle with entrants from Slovenia, Ireland, Germany, Spain, USA and Canada to name a few!

5,,,On our website the general feeling is that grassroots football in Scotland is under-resourced, under funded, and on the slide. What’s your take on amateur football, where it stands and where it’s going?

Grassroots football is broken, and that is one of the reasons behind our switch to a fan owned model. Too many clubs are struggling under rising costs, a lack of volunteers and a lack of resources (financial but also well maintained pitches etc). This comes against a backdrop of professional football where there has never been so much money. As a club, we believe there will be a fundamental switch in how grassroots operates in the next ten years – or clubs will simply die.

6,,,Do your games ever get scouted by professional clubs?

Yes with the north east being a hot bed of football, there’s always scouts at matches looking for the next Jamie Vardy. The league also picks up it’s fair share of players that have dropped out of the professional game from academies.

7,,,How can our readers help West Allotment Celtic?

Any readers who are looking to support another Celtic would be very welcome to become part owners of the club – details here. https://wacowners.co.uk/become-an-owner/?mepr-unauth-page=611&redirect_to=%2F

Maybe even some of your readers will like a trip down at some point to see us.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #40 CELTIC 1 BAYERN MUNICH 2 (MAEDA)*

Good evening, friends.
For those that like symmetry in their life, the first half last night was a perfect example, with the ball being in the net at one end after 26 seconds and at the other with 26 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, only the second one counted and despite our very good defensive set up and display Celtic went into the break a goal down.
Earlier in the day I had mentioned that in big games my 2 hopes were always the same – to have one (at least) moment of jumping about like a daft laddie; and to still be in the game with 15 to go. Well, at least I got my first wish almost instantly, cos when Kuhn’s fine strike found the net, me and all those around me danced and hugged for a full minute before even realising that offside was a possibility. TV pictures show that the decision was correct but even so, what a fantastic start. However, the next 44 minutes was pretty much one way traffic towards Kasper in goal. Our set up and organisation was first class and Bayern didn’t really create much from open play albeit that our keeper had a couple of decent saves. Harry Kane will feel he should have buried a back post header late in the first half and we now know that he wouldn’t mess up his next big chance.
Bayern’s first goal was an unstoppable strike by Elise. At the game I was highly critical of Greg Taylor’s poor defending for the goal but having seen the move again it really was fine margins. One step further back and Greg might have cleared the high ball, but it was not to be.
The second half was only 4 minutes old when Bayern doubled their lead. All night, Bayern had been threatening from corners, but our individual defenders had all seemed clear on their roles and positions. But something went wrong with this one and the consensus seems to be that it was AJ, who otherwise was fantastic, who should have been at least closer to Harry Kane to stop his fairly easy side foot volley into the net.
We then had our first glimmer of hope on the 55th minute. An extremely long VAR check by UEFA standards left most of us thinking that a Celtic penalty was inevitable, especially when the referee was called to look at the screen. But ultimately no foul was awarded although the incident did seem to ignite the crowd even more and give the players a reminder that we only need one wee break!
Our best spell of the game followed and for 20-25 minutes we were the dominant side, helped by the introduction of Jota and Schlupp but even more so by moving Maeda through the middle. In the 75th minute Daizen brilliantly anticipated a back pass heading to Neuer and got to the ball first but touched it to too tight an angle to have a real chance of scoring. Yang then came on for Kuhn and had a pretty productive 20 minutes. None more so than in the 79th minute when a bit of ping pong in the 6 yard box saw Hyunjun flick the ball up for Daizen to nod it over the line. Kyogo departed Celtic just after Daizen was sent off against Young Boys. In his 4 appearances since then Mr Maeda has scored in every game he’s played in, netting 7 in total. Currently he can do little wrong.
The momentum remained with Celtic during the remaining 10 minutes and the 7 added and our best effort was in the 91st minute when my own man of the match, Alistair Johnston broke into the box and hammered a goal bound effort that Neuer managed to turn round the post.
So, we keep the tie alive and face Bayern again in 5 days time. Keep it tight, somehow manage to score first and who knows where that could take us!
We have now played 40 games this season, winning 29, drawing 7 and losing 4. We have scored 111 and conceded 35 (domestically it’s 97-19 and in Europe it’s 14-16).
Thank you so much to the 65 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Schmeichel: 24
Johnston*: 27
Carter-Vickers: 6
Trusty: 19
Taylor: 0
McGregor: 10
Engels*: 38
Hatate: 6
Kuhn: 3
Idah: 0
Maeda*: 57
Schlupp: 1
Jota: 0
Yang: 4

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Bayern Munich –
Maeda – 5 points (A NEW SENCELPOTY RECORD – MOTM 4 GAMES IN A ROW!)
Engels – 4 points
Johnston – 3 points
Schmeichel – 2 points
Trusty – 1 point

And the overall positions after 40 games played are –
64 points – Maeda
58 points – Kuhn
51 points – Engels
48 points – Hatate
47 points – Schmeichel
44 points – McGregor
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
32 points – Trusty
27 points – McCowan
26 points – Johnston A
24 points – Kyogo
23 points – Carter-Vickers
21 points – Taylor
19 points – Valle
14 points – Idah
7 points – O’Riley, Yang
6 points – Jota
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Welsh
2 points – Murray
0 points – Cummings, Holm, Johnston M., Kenny, Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

Our 4th consecutive home game is on Saturday at 3.00pm when we entertain Dundee United. Team selection will be interesting with Munich on the horizon.
Hail Hail!

Strange leader devoid of much detail.

Where are they from specifically?
What is the Northern league?
Why are we talking about them?

If it’s a case of being interested because of Celtic in the name, I can throw Stalybridge Celtic into the mix.
Local to me when I lived in Manchester. Play in the Northern Premier League DIv One.
Only problem some might have is they play in blue and white 😀.

Hi West Allotment Celtic, thanks for coming into the Den. I like what you’re doing but I don’t see a business plan and your figures don’t stack up. You could’ve put a bit more into your presentation. Given us a bit more detail, heck we don’t even know if North, South and East Allotments have teams in your League. We have clubs up here, much bigger than yours, struggling for cash. Look at our neighbours across the city, their business model has been failing for years, including their fan ownership model. So, while it’s all very noble let me tell you where I’m at – sorry, I’m oot! I’d be interested in buying your allotment, though, and building a gym on it…” 🤣🤣🤣

Until this rich vein of form he’s in runs out, I’d be playing Daizen through the middle in every game. Still think his pace in behind should have been utilised against those 2 giant Bayern defenders.

Having said that, I trust Brendan implicitly.

Looking forward to facing united again,, a team that plays a large part in some of my favourite Celtic memories

With the very real prospect of the Huns dropping points at Tynecastle, ( yes, I know that’s asking a lot of the craven Jambos but they managed it on the first day) I’d rest the fella- Adam needs the minutes and Daizen doesn’t.
Game time also for Ralston, Scales, Schlupp, McCowan.

Fresh legs required for the expectant onslaught on Tuesday. Another Dortmund would not be good for morale, or our CL credentials.

Realism is appreciating what we have achieved to reach the play off stage.
A top 24 place exceeded our seeding and should be considered progress.

A competitive performance on Tuesday will reinforce that.

Next season the aim is obviously qualification with a couple of hard opponents to overcome, given our lowly but improving coefficient.

The realistic target then should be a 9-16 finish, hopefully a lesser play off opponent than the likes of BM and last 16 participation.

It’s not an impossible prospect and what happens this summer will indicate the direction of travel.
An ambitious club would be pulling out all the stops to achieve this objective.

JS,

Some of us speak like it’s shocking we aren’t still regularly competing with these teams.

The money we have would buy you 1 Bayern player …maybe!

We are from one of the very small nations that compete for this trophy every season.

If that’s not enough, our domestic league is becoming a 1 team league.

What we earn by winning, other teams get multiples of for losing!

Rather than just endlessly moaning about the things we can’t do, I wish others would consider giving the club (Team) a little more credit for making sure we are, at least, at the party.

Outside of maybe being a bit braver in the first half th other night, I’ve pretty much agreed with the manager throughout this whole Euro campaign, while enjoying watching us give a fair account of ourselves for the most part.

If you can’t enjoy these Celtic days – after all the shit we’ve had to overcome – when will you ever enjoy Celtic.

We are jolly green giants …

HH 🍀

Big Audio Dynamite
February 14, 2025 12:44 pm

Establish ourselves in this new champions league format, then we can see about seriously having a chance against the better teams.

Give the manager the right tools to get us to the party, then we can think about getting up to dance

Hopefully the intent to buy more expensive players is the beginning of us taking Europe more seriously.

Qualify for a few years in succession, and that would give us the foundation to take the next step upwards.

We are representatives of the smallest country by far left in the competition.
18! from the top 5 leagues, and then Portuguese, Dutch, Belgian and little backwater us, from a non competitive league.

A superb achievement that we must look to build upon. It would be negligent not to.

A decent showing in Munich and we have
a fantastic last third of the season to enjoy.

A bit different from the anguish on show here this time last year!

That’s progress.

Jobo Baldie

Good afternoon, friends.
I’ve seen a few posts this week alluding to the qualifying process for next seasons European competition, with most using the plural e.g. ‘the teams we will face’, ‘the rounds we will play’ etc. But, last time I looked, it’s not as arduous as some might fear.
If, sorry when Celtic win the league we will have to play 1 qualifying tie in the Champions league play off round. The first leg will be on 19/20 August. Win the tie and we are in, lose it and we are guaranteed Europa league.
The runners up in Scotland, almost certainly Sevco will have a chance of Champions League. They will enter at qualifying round 2 with a first leg on July 22/23. If they progress to round 3 they are guaranteed Europa League but will have 2 more ties to try to get to Champions League, round 3 and then the play off round. If Sevco actually fail at round 2 I think they join the play off rounds for the Europa but with no guarantees.
Scotland will have 3 other European teams. 2 have qualifying rounds for the Europa and 1 will start in qualifying round 2 for the Conference League.
Win the SPL and Celtic are guaranteed 10 European ties – the home and away qualifier and then 8 in one of the top 2 competitions.
Back to babysitting…….

Thanks for taking the time to bring facts to attention of readers.

The big issue is will those facts overcome our confirmation bias about Celtic, The SFA and UEFA?

That underlying, perhaps unconscious bias, is the place where the real battle of truth v lies occurs.

That is why I challenge the thinking that contributes to confirmation bias by presenting information which in turn makes it a tough shift.

I think confirmation bias forms the shadows in the Platos cave analogy.

Correcting the confirmation bias reasons that form the shadows that gets debated ad infinitum increases the chances the shadows become real.

How do we do that? Via dialogue by being open to persuasion, a prerequisite of which under dialogue is trust.

Starting with trusting each other more to listen to the points made.

Dialogue does not guarantee agreement but could result in amicable agreement to disagree.

I understand Mags frustration at the truth as he (and I) see it but his means of expressing his frustraion because it comes across as confrontational, which rules out trust leaves no room for dialogue.

As I said before is there room on SC when discussing the Celtic shadows we each perceive on the wall for dialogue to occur to make the shadows real or is just a place to sustain the shadows?

Surely there is room for both as without the shadows there would be nothing to make real through adding facts?

I think our hosts are keeping the door for dialogue open but with understandable skepticism based on justifiable mistrust of the Celtic Board’s past actions of failure to act for which there might be good business reasons even if as supporters we don’t like them.

I’ll end with a story of making a shadow real.

The shadow is the belief held by 2 neighbours that the fence separating their gardens by Mr Green is that the fence is green on both sides. Mr Brown thinks it’s Brown all over.
However they lay aside their core belief that their neighbour is loopy or an ego maniac or not to be trusted because of some past event involving both and engage in dialogue.
To their surprise because they honestly never knew, the truth is the fence is green on one side and Brown on the other.

To change colours, life is NOT black and white.

They might still think their neighbour is a tosser but on the issue of the colour of the fence they reach agreement.

I think a tactic of MM was to snort or mislablel facts or information provided by individuals to save him delving and maybe having to change his mistrust narrative as a result.

So keep on fact finding Joe. It is an invaluable route to greater understanding.
