Relentless
Morning, all.
The Celtic players and management will have been glad to see the back of Tuesday night’s game, not just because we negotiated a potentially tricky match against Aberdeen with a somewhat flattering 5-1 victory, but also because it is the last in a long line of fixtures which have had us playing virtually midweek-in, midweek-out.
We have three games to go until the next and final international break, quite an important one for the national team as we attempt to get past Greece in the Nations League play-offs. It’s hard to believe that the first of those came six months ago-after we gubbed TFOD 3-0 at home-and even harder to comprehend that we have played forty matches since then. More games than in an entire league season. And that’s despite losing six weeks of that time to those breaks.
It has been absolutely relentless, and has undoubtedly taken its toll on our wafer-thin squad. Despite losing so few players to injury this season, we have had limited chances to rotate the squad, preferring instead to rotate during the matches themselves. The recent introduction of the five substitutes rule has certainly helped in this regard, but it has also served to show everyone concerned how limited the squad really is as an effective unit. We have our preferred first XI and maybe a few others that we can trust, and that’s it. And as a result, some of them are starting to wilt under the load. I think the proof of that lies in the fact that we lost only one game in the first four months of the run of games, but have lost four in the last two months. Yet despite that relentless schedule, we have been just as relentless in our pursuit of the three domestic trophies. And all this while rebuilding our reputation in Europe.
The next three games, away to St Mirren and then at home to The Foe Malign in the league, are split by a home cup-tie against Hibs. None will not be straightforward. We can take some comfort from the fact that the huns have two ties against Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in that time, but also should remember that they don’t have a Scottish Cup game inbetween. We might strip a bit more refreshed than otherwise for the derby, but they might be buoyed up by another unexpected result. Time will tell,I suppose.
The scarcity of viable options available for the manager this season has been little short of scandalous, and much of the blame for that can be set at the foot of those who sanctioned the signings during the 2023 summer window. To counter that, BR has in return sanctioned the removal of most of them during the last three windows, almost all of them on loan. In other words, we are still on the hook for most of that wage bill and all of the contracts that were signed. What a waste of resources from what we are constantly told is a well-run club which focuses on coming out of every window stronger than it went in.
I’ve got a bridge to sell you if you still believe that…
With more time now for coaching the players rather than just keeping their fitness levels ticking over while offering as much rest as possible, I’d hope that BR has a schedule mapped out for doing just that. We know that at the moment there are players in that squad who just aren’t first-team ready. Players who need to focus maybe on improving their concentration. Others who just need encouragement-or a boot up the jacksie. He has always said that his strength as a coach is in improving players, and we have seen that during both his spells with us. Now that he has more time to do just that, I hope he uses it to our advantage.
I hope too that he finds the time and the opportunity to sit down with the CEO and the chief financial officer to discuss budgets and player requirements, maybe during the international break. That is almost as important at this time of the season, and let’s face it, it’s not as though Nicholson can tell him he’s busy. It would be nice if just for once Celtic went into a window with the intention of keeping all of our top players, and adding to it with the players that the manager has pinpointed as his main targets. It would be nice if just once, in fact, we spent more than we brought in and actually improved the side.
These are the things which we as Celtic supporters will be considering over most of the remaining midweeks of the season. I hope that those in the positions to actually do more than just consider these things get off their collective arses and actually do their job for a change. It’s time to give the manager what he wants, which is to have a different selection headache from the type he’s had to deal with for too damn long!

Hope, all’s good …
Yes, that’s the way I remember it, we brought Paddy Roberts in on loan to do the job and although he was very good, when Man City asked for 9mn for him, we were able to tell them to stick it as Jamsie was the man!!

MIT,
Great story! My admiration for both Johnson and Marsch has grown. I always thought Marsch was unfortunate in his latter choice of clubs. I had him pencilled in as a possible future Celtic manager.
Folks, indulge me a bit on a non football, non political story, we have a wolf in our neighbourhood!
Normally, he keeps to the other side of our back fence but last night, according to tracks, he explored our deck. Times must be tough for him/her. In the past few weeks he has moved quickly across our backyard, sniffing a trail that he is following. Now, he seems to be foraging. He is larger than an Alsatian and has a touch of cinnamon in his/her fur. The birds freeze when he is in the area…no warning cries, which is unusual.
I shall try and get a snap(with the camera).
Interlude over,
Rebus
Rebus67 @ 1:35 pm,
Excellent post and hits the nail on the head.
There are a lot of challenges to bringing these young lads through.
English filthy lucre an obvious one.
Daniel Cummings had the choice in January to be promoted to Celtic’s first team or a pre-contract with West Ham United.
He choose to finish his career in the B team and go to the Hammers.
Wow, hope all goes well with the wolf…

on the subject of ex Celtic youths, I’m hearing that Liverpool have decided that Doak’s future is not at Anfield.
On the subject of being carded or not, has BP been on? Seems quieter today

Mike in Toronto @ 2:26 pm,
Yes, as our youths outstanding candidate you have to think, we can’t keep him, yet the elite don’t think he’s good enough.
Having seen a wee bit of Doaks and quite a bit more of Liverpool I’m not really that surprised.
There are some fabulous players that can’t get near that Liverpool team.
As you say, Ben has all the attributes, yet, as I’ve said before, elite football in a sense is getting more and more like elite rugby.
You have to have the exact physicality for the position you play, or be world class.
Doak is strong, has pace, good technically, he looks really good until you compare him with the likes of Bayern Munich’s Michael Olises then he is more Middlesbrough than UCL.

Hi Bobby:
The above is one of the main reasons that this is my favorite Celtic site. It is a smart policy to have, and it is well administered.
Personally, I blame Rebus and MIT for leading me astray.🤣
First class lead article, as per. You often have the uncanny ability of reflecting my own thoughts like a mirror, without me having to get off my ass to think about organizing and composing.

Bobby,
As I was writing my stuff last night, replying to 16R, I had a feeling that this was all wrong. I see how easily it can escalate, especially with IQ4 involved!
I really wonder how I would cope on a political blog…probably end up talking about Celtic,

I believe we are only Kasper, Auston and Callum away from having the full set of Celtic players the daily record has tried to sell for us this week.
That’s very nice on them.

So nothing wrong with Maeda goal last week……so who lied and said they had factual proof the ball was out?
MIT hi mike went to toronto once and it was closed😎😎but niagara on the river was open, what a lovely place think I told you before it reminded me of Frodsham here in cheshire, lovely old quaint shops and a big clock in the middle of the street, now that is Frodsham just ask Frodshambhoy 😎😎hope you and seamus are well.hh 👍❤
Alan Muir was wrong to disallow a goal’ scored by Daizen Maeda for Celtic away to Hibs.
That is the view of four members of the SFA KMI panel who reviewed the 90 minutes from Easter Road.
The majority (4:1) of the panel deemed the on-field decision of goal to be correct. They felt the factual VAR intervention for the ball being out of play was incorrect. One panel member felt VAR was correct to intervene as they believed one of the angles showed the ball out of play.
Doesn’t help Celtic and next to nothing will be done🤬🤬

Sorry for the late reply regarding earlier.
Not suggesting that a young academy player should be on 10k a week, but could be if the structure of the budgets available within the club, we’re maybe addressed?
Now there are far better financial heads than myself on here, that could throw far better light upon some random budget figures, as example purposes only?
So a first team squad member.
25 players at an average wage of 35k, over a full year, works out at
45.5M
Even reducing the average wage to 30k still has a budget of
39M
Even as academy players, a 20man squad could be in operation, with an average wage of 5k, over a course of a year, works out
5.2M
Even allowing for an extortionate 10M towards management and back room staff.
So a financial wage budget of 60M could potentially be put in place for ourselves, even if such budget figures could be regarded as on the higher end imo?
Academy would pay for itself, in regards it wouldn’t take many sales to pay for itself either.
Would benefit hugely if say a 10k stadium was built for them, along with availability for the women team.
But would potentially be most beneficial if such an academy team as such were able to play in a far higher standard than lowland league.
As the Scottish FA do exactly sweet FA for ourselves in this regards, I do believe that we have to look elsewhere in order to protect our homegrown requirement for CL football imo.
Remember also our potential 25man squad will have on more occasions than not, 5 players without any competitive football whatsoever at present?
Great way to be treating the likes of a Dane Murray at present, especially as a representative of the underage Scottish national team?
Many more of recent times have been caught up within the same trap that the Scottish FA has allowed to develop.
Biggest grudge I hold against our board, is against the Scottish FA and our academy development programme, which has been in a ridiculous situation for way too long now imo?
To think that in a couple of seasons from now, we might not be able to find 4 out of the 8 homegrown players, who have to be academy trained also?
That as the biggest and best and most successful Scottish team ever, to potentially finding itself in such a dire situation developing, is a total embarrassment imo?
Now, I also fail to see how it can be such a finical issue whatsoever, but far better business heads than myself might be able to explain why it’s such an issue at present?
Celtic not winning against Hibs ensured that the next Glasgow Derby would not be a title decider. Our team as guilty as the team that capitulated at new year on that one.

———————————
I got a bum rap and copped a plea. Next time, I’m pleading the 5th.
Professional Scottish football clubs face several challenges when it comes to developing young footballers:
1. Financial Constraints
Many Scottish clubs, especially outside of Celtic and Rangers, operate on limited budgets. This affects investment in youth academies, training facilities, and scouting networks.
Smaller clubs struggle to compete with wealthier English clubs that can offer better wages and facilities to young prospects.
2. Competition from English Clubs
Talented Scottish youngsters are often poached by English Premier League and Championship clubs at a young age, limiting the talent pool available to domestic clubs.
Cross-border compensation rules mean Scottish clubs receive minimal financial return when young players leave.
3. Lack of Competitive Reserve League
Scotland lacks a strong, structured reserve league, making it difficult for young players to bridge the gap between youth football and first-team action.
Many clubs rely on loan moves to lower-league teams for development, but this can be inconsistent.
4. Limited Pathway to First-Team Football
Managers under pressure for results often prioritize experienced players over youth prospects.
Young players struggle for regular game time, slowing their development.
5. Quality of Coaching & Facilities
While improving, coaching standards and facilities still lag behind major European nations.
Some clubs lack state-of-the-art training facilities, which impacts player development.
6. Physical and Tactical Development
Scottish football has traditionally emphasized physicality, which can limit technical and tactical development.
Young players sometimes struggle to adapt when transitioning to higher levels of the game.
7. Early Specialization & Over-Reliance on Academies
There is sometimes a rigid focus on structured academy football rather than diverse, unstructured play, which can limit creativity and adaptability in young players.
8. Small Population & Talent Pool
With a population of only around 5.5 million, Scotland has a naturally smaller talent pool compared to larger footballing nations.
This means there are fewer elite-level young players emerging.
Despite these challenges, some clubs (e.g., Celtic, Rangers, and Hibernian) are making progress with improved youth setups, while initiatives like the Scottish FA’s Performance Schools aim to enhance player development at a grassroots level.
So we question a VAR decision from last Saturday and we still don’t have an answer.
Dundee Utd question one from Wednesday and they get a reply.
WTF is going on

Fan @ 4.17
How is it Brendans fault that no academy players have come through the system during his time.
Surely that’s the academy coaches and scouts responsibility.
Can you name players from the academy who are any that are flourishing elsewhere?
You can’t hide your dislike of Brendan, can you
Apologies, it has now been confirmed that our goal should have stood last Saturday.

St. Tams
Not sure that it is fair to say that Fan dislikes BR. Like myself, I think Fan sees and is more open about BR’s limitatons as a manager than most on here. But speaking for myself, I dont think dislike comes into the discussion.
BR has gotten lots of praise for results this season. As chief cook and bottlewasher, that’s fair enough. If things go badly, it is his neck first on the line, even though other people all play a role.
But, as the club’s unoffical website has said for years, Celtic needs a different model to try to make upfor inequities in their situation compared to other leagues… such as the EPL. Buy low, sell high, and develop young players who can make it into the first team, some of whom can be sold on for a profit.
But, beyond that, there is still the need for at least 4 Celtic developed players to meet UEFA requirments. It does seem to me that there is such a premium on winning every domestic game and trophy that development has taken a back seat.
For a team that dwarves every other team in the country, I think Celtic should be able to bring kids through better than they do. Even training with first teamers every week is probably better training than they will get in most other clubs in Scotland. Add in getting games in the League Cup, and we should be seeing more kids coming through.
Old chesnut … kids arent good enough to make the first team so don play, but if they dont play they wont ever get good enough for the first team.
as top man, BR has to look at more than just the first team and trophies… he has to take a bigger view, and look at ways to integrate young players into the first team squad better.
obviously, Celtic is not a one man operation. But, the footballing buck stops with BR.
as the top dog, BR has gotten lots of credit and deservedly so, but, he then does also need to be held accountable when issues arent being addressed.
Is any of our down under posters keeping an eye on Marco Tilio, That’s 2 in 2 games he’s scored

No way do we have 25 players averaging £35k pw. Our top players, maybe four or five of them, might average that amount. Our base line is apparently £7k pw,which would apply to most “projects”. After that,it is up to your progress and a hard-headed agent.
MIKE and SOL you either didnt see my posts to you, or deliberately avoided them😎😎😎😎😎

Bobby
I have no idea upon individual salaries whatsoever, and believe that it’s only a guessing game as such?
But even with your base figure of 7k as a potential project figure, and say a 20man squad in place.
Then 7.3M is currently being wasted each season without a proper development pathway in operation for ourselves.
So generating huge profits to pay out in corporation tax is the current model in place at present?
Even at that, there still looks like plenty of room for increasing the actual players wage budget, that is possibly in place also imo?
And that would still be covered with working on a europa league income, without depending upon the CL riches either?
So believe that the structure of the income needs to be tackled, along with the development program, moreso than a board getting judged upon how much is actually spent upon first team squad players imo
big packy

MIKE and SOL you either didnt see my posts to you, or deliberately avoided them😎😎😎😎😎
Not had a chance to respond, BP. I had no idea being retired (aka Mrs Kitts) would keep me so busy. I did less work at work, and I got paid for it then. 😄😄

Totally agree that we should be using any means possible to reduce our corporation tax. Not in a DM R1ngers way,but by investing more on the football operation. Attract better players by looking at previously too expensive targets, loosen the noose on our wage structure to make the club more attractive. Just two ways to do that.
But we remain risk-averse to consider speculating to accumulate, and until that changes,we won’t see the improvement we all want.
So Alan Muir chalked off our goal on Saturday just because he could. It was ever thus and VAR is not making a blind bit of difference. When someone with an agenda wants to put that before his integrity, he will. This is the same Alan Muir who missed a handball on the goal line that everyone in the stadium saw in 2014. Fast forward 10 seasons and here is again still at it. Two goals, one crucial, chopped off for no other reason than he could. He went against the VAR rules and CGAF. Celtic need to get this guy sacked. I don’t like to see anyone lose their job but I’ll make an exception for this bigot.
As for the discussion about young players coming through. Listen to BR’s press conference today and all his other musings on this. There is a standard that must be reached to play in his teams whether you are 18 or 28. If you are not to his eyes maximising everything you have got, you won’t play. I’m good with that. Celtic jerseys do not shrink to fit inferior players, nor are they for Billy big b..s or shirkers.
StTams
Where did I say it was Brendan’s fault.
It was a discussion on the often said that he brought through youth.
I just asked for the name of one in case I had forgotten about.
Was not about players flourishing or not.
Your dislike of me showing when you attribute something I hadn’t posted to furnish your agenda.
SOL no problem pal❤❤
Surely Alan Muir needs to be demoted from VAR duties until he learns the rules?
According to a guy on Celticminded who said his source was sound.
As I said in another post , this came directly from collum to the refs associations
Just listened to the VAR audio from the Hibs game. Muir “Probably out but can’t be sure” his assistant then says “yeah, probably out”
Bobby
Very true and in total agreement.
But also only potentially covers 17 players within a 25man squad.
We still need our 8 Scottish players to be able to provide more within our squad, than they currently do so imo?
Not expecting 8 CL quality Scottish players, especially as chances of that ever getting put in place, possibly will remain at zero chance.
Yet I still believe that we need Scottish players to provide a far better rotation policy for ourselves, especially with CL in mind?
We have had a fairly untroubled SPFL campaign this season, but can’t expect every season to be that way either going forward?
So this season has thrown up many challenges that lie ahead, starting with next season with CL qualifiers to contend with, all the while a transfer window is open?
Still believe that a number of improvements are required within our club, to deal with the changes involved within the footballing calendar and landscape developing within European football?
We may have been well aware of what was developing, but won’t be expecting any help from the Scottish FA in regards the issues that still aren’t getting tackled within the Scottish game whatsoever imo?
I agree with the fact that Scottish football setup is the main reason none of our young academy players are progressing to any great level regardless of which club they come through. If the SFA took notice of Barca academy and how many superstars they have produced over decades since La Maisa was created they could learn a lot. Look at the current crop Yamal Pedri Curabasi Hernandez. These guys all made debuts at 16 and below along with many others over the decades. How can they continue to find and develop them……
