Relentless
Morning, all.
The Celtic players and management will have been glad to see the back of Tuesday night’s game, not just because we negotiated a potentially tricky match against Aberdeen with a somewhat flattering 5-1 victory, but also because it is the last in a long line of fixtures which have had us playing virtually midweek-in, midweek-out.
We have three games to go until the next and final international break, quite an important one for the national team as we attempt to get past Greece in the Nations League play-offs. It’s hard to believe that the first of those came six months ago-after we gubbed TFOD 3-0 at home-and even harder to comprehend that we have played forty matches since then. More games than in an entire league season. And that’s despite losing six weeks of that time to those breaks.
It has been absolutely relentless, and has undoubtedly taken its toll on our wafer-thin squad. Despite losing so few players to injury this season, we have had limited chances to rotate the squad, preferring instead to rotate during the matches themselves. The recent introduction of the five substitutes rule has certainly helped in this regard, but it has also served to show everyone concerned how limited the squad really is as an effective unit. We have our preferred first XI and maybe a few others that we can trust, and that’s it. And as a result, some of them are starting to wilt under the load. I think the proof of that lies in the fact that we lost only one game in the first four months of the run of games, but have lost four in the last two months. Yet despite that relentless schedule, we have been just as relentless in our pursuit of the three domestic trophies. And all this while rebuilding our reputation in Europe.
The next three games, away to St Mirren and then at home to The Foe Malign in the league, are split by a home cup-tie against Hibs. None will not be straightforward. We can take some comfort from the fact that the huns have two ties against Mourinho’s Fenerbahce in that time, but also should remember that they don’t have a Scottish Cup game inbetween. We might strip a bit more refreshed than otherwise for the derby, but they might be buoyed up by another unexpected result. Time will tell,I suppose.
The scarcity of viable options available for the manager this season has been little short of scandalous, and much of the blame for that can be set at the foot of those who sanctioned the signings during the 2023 summer window. To counter that, BR has in return sanctioned the removal of most of them during the last three windows, almost all of them on loan. In other words, we are still on the hook for most of that wage bill and all of the contracts that were signed. What a waste of resources from what we are constantly told is a well-run club which focuses on coming out of every window stronger than it went in.
I’ve got a bridge to sell you if you still believe that…
With more time now for coaching the players rather than just keeping their fitness levels ticking over while offering as much rest as possible, I’d hope that BR has a schedule mapped out for doing just that. We know that at the moment there are players in that squad who just aren’t first-team ready. Players who need to focus maybe on improving their concentration. Others who just need encouragement-or a boot up the jacksie. He has always said that his strength as a coach is in improving players, and we have seen that during both his spells with us. Now that he has more time to do just that, I hope he uses it to our advantage.
I hope too that he finds the time and the opportunity to sit down with the CEO and the chief financial officer to discuss budgets and player requirements, maybe during the international break. That is almost as important at this time of the season, and let’s face it, it’s not as though Nicholson can tell him he’s busy. It would be nice if just for once Celtic went into a window with the intention of keeping all of our top players, and adding to it with the players that the manager has pinpointed as his main targets. It would be nice if just once, in fact, we spent more than we brought in and actually improved the side.
These are the things which we as Celtic supporters will be considering over most of the remaining midweeks of the season. I hope that those in the positions to actually do more than just consider these things get off their collective arses and actually do their job for a change. It’s time to give the manager what he wants, which is to have a different selection headache from the type he’s had to deal with for too damn long!

Fan @ 4:17 pm,
You get rather het up when someone picks you up on your erroneous points.
So, now your saying your point was…
Name me a player that was in a Celtic’s youth team, when Brendan Rodgers arrived, that Brendan brought into the first team and he developed into a first team player.
Is that correct?
Hail Hail

I didnt take any offence to your posts last night. We have agreed/disagreed long enough and often enough that I would know well enough that you dont intend any offence, even if we disagree, and trust that you would know I would not mean to offend you.
You are one of the few on here whoseems to enjoy reading a lot of the stuff I like, even if you dont agree with most of it… which I respect.

As a Chairboy, I can tell you that Celtic’s U21 team played at Adam’s Park in September 2015.
They played against Benfica, the 2-1scoreline flattered Celtic, it was men against boys…

They went on to play Chelsea in Aldershot the 5-0 scoreline flattered Celtic.

Could you tell me what Brendan Rodgers was supposed to have done to develop these guys into UCL players, in two years?
You have admitted that Brendan Rodgers had no responsibility for this squad.
It was very much hyped but not very good.

Despite the oft cited view I have seen no evidence of BR bringing youngsters through in either term as our coach.
Am I wrong and can someone remind me of a youngster brought through in his first term?
And in last season and a half I don’t count youngsters getting the odd few minutes as integration.
16 roads, sometimes life gets in the way of the blog, so no worries.
For the youth set up, I would contact the EPL and try and set up some type of cross boarder set up, just like the Belgium league done. That’s right they didn’t.
If your not ready by 20, your past it.
Brugge had 3 under 20s playing in their CL match and somehow the EPL don’t steal their players.
Can’t have it all ways. And let’s get it right. Our youth coaches are not up to the task, it’s as simple as that.
I posted last week the celtic Web link and the majority have been at the club for over 10 years or played with the club. Why? why when the development has not been good enough.
I can’t imagine that the Belgium youth league is some type of anomaly. I would instead believe they have better coaches and different techniques to ensure a steady stream of players.
Belgium should be easy to replicate, the same way they replicated the French system.
No hard, just excuses after excuses.
Diet, league structure, money. Everything except, motivation, desire, dedication and good honest hard graft. Schools of excellence. We can afford the best coaches on the planet, but we chose ex players and ones that were not even that good🙈🙈🙈
Dembele and Eduardo joined us from youth setups brought in excess of 40m.
16R,
I have not taken offence. You are entitled to an opinion. It is a very difficult topic that draws in emotions.
i think we can all agree that all life is precious.

True!
But the debate was about bringing players through to first team level from our own youth set up.
Ivan Toney with 5th goal in 2 games in Saudi.
McKenna red carded in La Liga.
Steve N,
Good joke!
My wolf is impressive and I hope to see him again. There are quite a few hunters around here so (s)he is at risk, especially if he follows the same route. The skidoo brigade will be after him.
We get deer and coyotes as well, plus flocks of wild turkeys. The latter make a right mess of your lawn as they rip it up with their claws.
Rebus, the nature boy.
celtics young bhoys who wurny good enuff for us are makin a livin all over the shop so the b team is a good thing a always thought findley whose now wae kilmarnock wis gonny make it but it didnae work oot but we should continue tae bring through players who we supply tae other teams COYBIG
Fan @ 8:53 pm,
That’s the point I attemped to answer.
I did not do it to big up BR, just to point out that there was various development going on.
Calvin Miller was supposed to be world class at youth level – BR gave him opportunities but he didn’t kick on.
That was more to do with Calvin not reaching the heights many thought he would – this often happens with youth players.
If hechad gone to England and was playing for say Bournemouth now like Ryan Christie, you could argue BR failed to develop him, but he’s playing for Falkirk, one of their better players for sure yet the reason he didn’t make it at Celtic wasn’t for lack of opportunity.
In fact his understudy at youth level Tony Ralston has done better I’d argue.
Kris Ajer was a highly thought of youth Norwegian Midfielder, Brendan arrived at Celtic in May 2016, Kris arrived in June 2016.
Yet BR&CO gets no recognition for helping Kris develop into a quality CH, as according to SCs Ronny Delia had signed him up earlier that year (even though he stayed in Norway), so it was all on Ronny.
Keiran Tierney was given his debut by Ronny Delia, so any development that happened between Ronny going and KT going to Arsenal doesn’t count, right?
The whole thing is nonsensical, apologies if I didn’t get your original point but I interpreted it as a fair comment, not a loaded post.
Hail Hail
Awe Naw, but not ours. And we had to pay €9 million for Eduardo. And in his youth team he played alongside Mbappe.
https://www.huffingtonpost.fr/sport/article/celtic-glasgow-psg-il-y-a-huit-ans-kylian-mbappe-affrontait-deja-odsonne-edouard_108460.html.
Fan,
Rodgers made his name as a youth coach at Chelsea. An impeccable reputation in that respect. He brought through many a player who never made it to the Chelsea 1st team but did make it elsewhere. Why ? Because they weren’t good enough for Chelsea under Mourinho when Brendan was there and their youth setup was second to none. Mourinho has never brought through a youth in his entire illustrious career. Yet is one of the world’s most successful coaches. MON famously wasn’t interested. The list is endless. CL coaches should not be wasting their time developing youths. It shouldn’t be their remit. Especially when the club and the league that you work in is absolutely dysfunctional in that respect. It’s expecting miracles. Sounds like another stick to beat up Brendan with as far as I’m concerned.
Pitymevin
See my last post.
Completely correct AN, bang on the money
Awe Naw
My original post in response to others was not about a stick to beat anyone.
My observation was BR being touted as one who brings through youth didn’t tally with both his stints at Celtic.
I asked if I was wrong and could anyone remind me of player I had forgotten.
Just buy a small club and develop them there?
Just realised that tomorrows ref McDermot is the guy at the centre of Dundee Utd complaint against his VAR decisions last week .
Involved in an investigation but gets to ref our game.
Only in Scotland.
Mahe
Are you suggesting that we take over the Huns?😁
Hail Hail.
Mahe 9.28pm
Is that whit Leeds United are planning alledgedly.
Mahe, that’s should be a priority. The only question is, where?
For me it would be in France, Belgium or Holland.
As Auldheid confirmed Dom wanted to do this in Australia and his world class vision was to big for the club. So he got bagged. The bagged bit is not official, and reading between the lines is speculation.
Fan
Sorry I never read back
No he can’t it’s not possible at Celtic. No offence to our backroom guys but they just don’t have the wherewithal to bring through CL quality players. Hence why we are paying 9m for Eduardo, 0.5m for Dembele. Lawwell might piss in his pants about it but it gives him enough financial leeway to indulge his son in a job he’s not qualified to do to piss down the drain the profits garnered from the development from Brendan (not the youth backroom boys) that such players allow us. Engles is the next. We need to do more in that manner and remove the obstacles that are preventing it. Appointing coaching staff with a proven record in that regard might help rather than appointments made in shower rooms.
I should add it’s not as if we losing any golden Nuggets. Doak maybe …still a long way to go. Robertson 12 year ago .. apart from that nobody I can recall
Ok lhads off to the pub. Didn’t mean to ruffle anyone’s feathers. Sorry if anyone took it that way. My apologies for not reading the thread. Will miss tomorrows game. Going to see Eintracht and it coincides with our late k.o if we win then the BL is overwith.
Watching Barry Bannon with Wednesday against Sunderland. Still has a superb left foot. One of the best passers of a ball in the Championship.
Great responses, smiling here in the sun.
PityMevin,,England or Wales for ease of visiting home as we are talking about kids who will be leaving their mammy for the first time. Go the whole hog and buy houses to be used as digs and migrate 7 or 8 down. Not the full 11 because as much as becoming Celtics feeder club might appeal to the likes of Gillingham FC fans who have an eternal relegation scrap, they still a the connection supplied most likely by local players and staff.
Hail Hail
Awe Naw @ 9:44 pm,
Enjoy the game…
The debate certainly confused me
I stated to McCaff – Chairbhoy @ 11:58 am,
“I’m not excepting that it means players have to be signed, developed and reaching elite standards in the two and a half seasons BR was here.”
Yet that seems to be the criteria, so Edouard, Dembele, Ajer, Tierney, Calmac, Christie, Ralston etc etc don’t count.
Go figure – I’m sticking to the shark jumping:)))

That should be enough to get him sacked, at least it would in any honest football league. He made it a factual call that the ball was definitely out of play, and told McLean to disallow the goal on this basis. He didn’t tell the ref to take another look, he made the decision based on a “probable out” call.
In all honesty, I have no idea if it was in or not, but as the official with the best view (the assistant) did not flag it as out, it can only be overturned if a clear and obvious error is detected. There was nothing clear and obvious except for Muir’s clear and obvious decision to cheat Celtic out of a goal and at least a point from the game.
Just a thought. Tennis uses a system that can accurately show if a ball, much smaller than a football and travelling much faster, hits the ground on or beyond a line. While a football doesn’t need to hit the ground to be out of play, it is surely not impossible to adapt the tennis system to remove any doubt for the officials.
Auldbhoy67,
I listened to an expert discuss the alleged takeover on the excellent Price of Football podcast.
It was notable he couldn’t confirm/hadn’t heard from sources that it was finalizing.
On the speculation, his take was that any club with 45 plus thousand was fair game and potentially profitable. One theory floated was that the 49ers will sell advertising, stadium rights and naming, shirt sponsorship etc as a block with both teams and two different countries thrown into the deal, one of them has the biggest league in the world and the other the biggest attendance per capita. Same shirt deals, etc, cheaper rates as buying for two clubs, all those little selling techniques that add up.
That’s what they are after, not beating Celtic but maximizing the current wallets and keeping the show on the toad which works in the USA and Leeds United supporters will forever stand by their club but R2ngers?
Blinded by the stats, unaware of the unseen reality. I’m not joking when I say this might be their last 2nd place, others will be breathing down their neck.
I would be happy to see the Yanks come in as it should usher in an age of transition for various reasons.
Secondly, and this is just my opinion, as mentioned they are much more into the event rather than the 90 minutes so if you want to show up two hours early there will be much better food, entertainment especially for the kids (facepainters and games) plus,,,they will push for beer in the stands. They will, in a plastic cup and overpriced plus underpoured, but it’s just normal to have a beer at sporting events here, and the CCTV cameras that never find the culprit will suddenly start working under the Yanks.
Now dare I say, if a real sense of commercialization swept through Ibrox, do you think Celtic would be forced to reciprocate? In spades.
There’s another reason I hope the take it over.
