The Big Dilemma

Morning, all.

It’s a big night for us tonight, probably our last chance to get any sort of European challenge up and running. On top of that, it’s a timely reminder of when we were a force in Europe, before the beancounters and downsizers took control.

We play Celta Vigo at home tonight, one of the teams we conquered on our way to Seville. Back then, few teams would relish being drawn against Celtic in Europe. Admittedly, the chances were that they would get a result in their home leg, but we were a formidable force to be reckoned with, and damn near unbeatable at home. That hard-earned reputation has taken a severe kicking over the years and is little more than a distant if fond memory now, but tonight is an opportunity for both nostalgia and redemption.

We’ve endured a ropey spell around the end of August and start of September but it’s too early to say that we’ve come out the other side yet. The long international break seems to have given us the time to work on improving domestically, but last week’s first half against an admittedly very good Benfica showed us that we have a long way to go if we want Europe to be our benchmark.

Europe is certainly the standard that the fans and dare I say the players want us to be measured against, but try telling that to the suits. I’m beginning to think they’re getting fed up with all the free junkets abroad, the all expenses paid jollies that come with the Celtic blazer and tie. Personally, while I’ll agree that it might be possible to have too much of a good thing, I think I’d be all for the all expenses paid jollies. And a bit of gladhanding the nobs at UEFA might come in handy for another job further down the line.

Not our lot, though. To assemble a team worth a damn in Europe costs too much money-our money, of course, but try telling them that. It’s a lot of effort too, all that looking at videos or listening to agents telling you how brilliant their client is. Then there’s the negotiations to sign the player, just when the missus and kids are wanting a holiday, you know?

Facetious? Maybe. But if anyone can offer a better reason why our lot have turned their backs on the continent’s biggest source of income, I’m all ears. Especially when our domestic TV rights for a whole season cost about the same as Sky pay for any two games down south. But anyway, tonight.

Sunday’s display was our best in a long time, and we will hope to build on that. The Vigo manager will be heartened though by the number of times Hearts cut through our midfield and defence to get a shot away, same as has happened in every game this season. That there is where the game will be won or lost. Will we be able to make enough chances and convert enough of them to counter the ones we will give up? Or does MON have an entirely new gameplan to put on show which will cut out the schoolboy errors that are damaging our season and giving us all hearties?

After such a resounding victory I would expect the manager to name an unchanged side, and if everyone was fit I’m quite sure that he would. However, the hamstring complaint that forced Callum Osmand off at half time probably throws a spoke into that plan. To my mind, it would be foolish to play him again immediately, as he has a history of this problem. Playing so soon afterwards is likely to aggravate it, so I expect him to be rested. And this is Martin’s big dilemma.

He surely can’t take Duran away from the centre, nor drop Hassan, not after Sunday when they were both excellent. But he surely cannot consider bringing back Tounekti either. Yet sticking with his 4-3-3 means exactly that, as Yang is still injured and Jota isn’t in the squad. So here’s a wicked wee alternative for you all (and hopefully the boss) to consider.

Sacrifice the third attacker and go 4-4-2. We’ve all been screaming to beef up the midfield anyway as it is an absolute necessity against better than usual opposition. Stick The Ox in there, a man with extensive European experience and who was badly missed against LASK. You know it makes sense.

Of course, that on its own might not be good enough. There are few mugs around at this level, and Vigo have shown themselves to be a very capable side. We will, as ever, be looking for every player to be on top of his game with no lapses of concentration, no daft tackles and no brain farts. Only a win tonight will be good enough, or we can write off entirely the remaining five games in Europe. And that for a club of our size will be a disgrace.

Thin doesn’t begin to describe the depth of squad quality available.
Ralston or Lotombo as rb cover, nothing in centre defence unless KT does a turn, no left back cover with Scales committed to the centre, unless Ralston is pitched in as an out of position last resort.
Midfield as weak as it could possibly be- Sorensen and McCowan are makeweights, offering little from the bench.
Up top we are still trying out a pick n mix system almost three months into the season.

Euro Calamity Celtic may scrape along against a Spanish team whose main default position is drawing games at home and losing in Europe. Not quite as badly as us.

A last opportunity to show something resembling a positive performance.

Bobby
You contradict yourself.
if all the board were interested in was the missus and kids getting a holiday then they would pay the asking price and get the deals done rather than dragging negotiations on for months before either paying more or walking away.

I swear negotiating is the real sport in town for these clowns. Nicholson even has his negotiation course at Harvard on his linked in

Maybe it takes so long to ‘sign’ a player for us due to Nicholson regaling his counter parts à la Big Packy!
”Did I tell you about the time I did a negotiation course at Harvard?” Repeating it as often as BP’s Vodjovina tale.

So no GB for tonight’s game?!

October 22, 2026 1:03 pm

Hunt the ball down and force mistakes, exactly how we did v Hearts, and we’ll give ourselves a good chance of getting a result.

Stand off good players and they will just use the available space to play us off the park. Be brave from the first whistle and get the crowd behind us, and hopefully we can unsettled Celta.

I still think we should consider a formation change when the opposition are of this calibre.

Watch, after we lose possession, how much space we leave for our opponents to play in, simply due to our two wide players basically being out the picture, and our FBs caught standing too wide apart from the nearest Tic player.

This is the kind of thing good coaches notice and ruthlessly exploit

By now our coaches should have the team well drilled to be in a better defensive shape as soon as the ball is lost.

I also said we weren’t making the most of the amount of corners (FKs around the box) that we get. The first goal v Hearts is a classic example of what I mean.

For years we would hit one of our CBs (Roy Aitken was brilliant at it) who would run to the front post and glance a header into the 6 yard box, and everyone else was free to go and attack it.

More of that kind of thing, Celts

Bada,

It’s really puzzling what our coaches think they are doing. If the fans can see how naive it looks when the ball ends up in our net precisely 3 seconds after we lose the ball, why would you just continue to make the same mistake over and over again?

Start out by making ourselves hard to beat, and then build from there.

Whatever formation I ended up choosing, one of the things I’d want to make sure of is having more bodies in the middle when we don’t have the ball. Regardless of where on the park we turn the ball over, there is usually only Callum and Mika (2 5’6″ mids) to cover the acres of space in midfield.

Mika has a great engine, but we’re asking the guy to stop the man in possession, as well as tracking runners from midfield ..he looks knackered by the end of each game.

Callum isn’t great at either of those things ..though I still feel he’s as good as anyone at keeping possession of the ball when we have it.

For the millionth time – We need a more mobile number 5, and real powerhouse in the middle of the park. If we had sorted both those things in the summer, I believe we’d be in much better shape in Europe

As usual, before a ball is kicked, I fancy us to win

October 22, 2026 4:28 pm

When the blue Huns beat the maroon Huns, will it be because the maroons were just terrible on the day? I’ll say the daily record etc will say it’s because the blue Huns were just too good for the maroon bigots.

Apparently the east coast Huns were so bad it was a cake-walk for Celtic – absolutely nothing to do with how we played.

I must read an article on the struggles of Leicester City as they negotiate League 1. There are some important takes from the article. Firstly, it shows how rapidly a club can decline from the pinnacle to serious financial trouble. Secondly, there is a quote from a long term supporter basically saying that he would always support the team but currently he does not like them.

LC have sold out their STs for the season.

Time for a cliche! Misery loves company. There are some similarities between LC and Celtic and I do not simply mean having managers in common.

That old loyal supporter echoes my own thoughts to a degree. I watch other teams now, including SPL teams. However, I know I shall never have the same emotional involvement with any club as I had for Celtic and that degrades my involvement with a new team.

I have asked is this an addiction? It has many similarities to one but the emotional component makes it different.

Incidentally, LC are for sale.

Games like tonight is why we signed the Ox. If he doesn’t start this game its inexplicable.

So, I guess he’s not starting then!

One of my golf buddies has attended several Celtic Foundation dinners around the UK and Ireland recently. Our Board attend these all expenses paid and MN in particular is pished as a fart each time. The bastards are shameless!

With respect to wee Sean I agree that he seems very uncomfortable anytime he’s in front of the cameras. Alex Rae on Clyde last night said that he’s a deep thinker of the game and considers every question carefully before answering. He doesn’t just trot out endless meaningless cliches.

NB Please read that last paragraph carefully. Alex was referring to Sean here – not himself.

Obviously!

From the Mission, and no one mistook me for a homeless person today. I obviously clean up well!

Not surprised that SM looks uncomfortable at pressers. Long been said that he never wanted the top job, but was happier working behind the scenes. Which I can understand, as I was that way in my practice. I was happier strategizing and working behind the scenes. Fortunately, my ex partner was happiest being ‘the guy’, so it worked well (for a period).

The problem for Celtic is that MON doesnt seem to be enjoying being in spotlight, and/ or he doesnt seem to have the energy for it the way he once did.

Celtic Nations :

Why Celtic v Celta is special

Tonight’s game sees a record ever away following for Celta with over 3,000 making the trip to Glasgow, but why? Galicia is the Celtic part of Spain, Galician TV for instance shows the all Ireland final every year and Celta means Celtic.

There’s been some confusion as to why this game means so much in Scotland but for Celta it’s huge

As one Celta director said

“In Glasgow they don’t understand why so many people from Vigo want to go to the game. For them, it’s just another game, but it is a very special match for our supporters.

“Lots of our fans bought a ticket first, then worried about travel and a hotel later!”

Galicia as a region fully embraces its Celtic roots and you’ll have lots of interactions where people identify as Galicians. Bagpipes are used to play the Galician anthem, they have Celtic festivals and Galicia has its own unique identity within Spain Many often identify the Basques with Celtic identity but it’s Galicians who are the Celts of Spain This is not just another game for Celta, it’s a Celtic derby

So that is why Thursdays game means so much to Celta, a club steeped in Galician identity.
