Big T

Morning,all.

We all grew up on the legend of The Lisbon Lions, and some of us were lucky enough to see them in action. Big Packy even saw them against Vojvodina! I myself only saw them as a unit on one occasion, against Clyde in 1971, but I saw them all in action in many other games alongside other players who were coming through and making their own mark at the club. Legends they undoubtedly were, famed throughout the game, but that cut little ice with the selectors of the Scottish national side.

Those worthy blazers in Park Gardens reckoned they knew a player when they saw one, and they evidently didn’t see enough in our European Cup winners to award them with appearances for the national side. This despite repeated failure to qualify for either of the two major tournament final stages during the Lions heyday, and for some considerable time before that.

Lack of international recognition by these people and their successors for our top players is often given for the lack of support from Celtic fans for the national side. There can be few fans anywhere in the world with so little interest in this side of the game, and I can sympathise with that opinion. I think it is perhaps a little simplistic to use it as the catch-all explanation, for there are certainly one or two others available. It is then unusual to see one of our own being so well-rewarded at international level when he is less of a fixture at club level!

I’m talking of course about Anthony Ralston, a player who made his first-team debut as a 17yo in May 2016. He was another of our youngsters given their chance by Ronny Deila, albeit it in the dying embers of his time with us. He was loaned out as a teenager to Queen’s Park and Dundee United in order to gain experience, though he got little game time. He saw more of that in his early 20s at St Johnstone, but at none of them did he set the world on fire and have us eagerly awaiting his return to the fold. In truth, many of us had given up on him; we saw him as a player with 100% commitment, but one who lacked the quality required for Celtic Park.

The arrival of Ange Postecoglu seemed to galvanise the player. At that time he was still a raw almost agricultural full-back,but Ange saw in him something different. He saw the only right back that we had on our books! Tony took his place in our starting line-up, and we muttered about there still being a few weeks left in the summer window to get someone in more capable of filling that berth. Ange duly did so, signing Juranovic on the last day-but Tony still managed to make a whopping 47 appearances for us in that season. Which is around 40% of his total in the eight years since he made his debut. In no other season has he managed as many as twenty.

He can of course consider himself unfortunate to have been up against two established internationalists in his position. Juranovic was replaced by Alastair Johnston, and our Canadian Ironman is every bit as much the warrior as Ralston. He will mix it with the worst while outmatching the best of opponents. Big T is though a very handy fella to have around as back-up,and no less a judge than Steve Clarke-who knows a thing or two about the right-back position-has had him as a fixture in the squad all year. To the tune of eleven caps this year alone, and eighteen in total. The latter being the same number achieved by Tommy Gemmell, I might add.

In fact,Ralston has had more game time for Scotland this year than he has had for Celtic! That’s a crazy statistic, innit? There can’t be many players anywhere who can hardly get a game at club level, yet be a fixture in the international side. He only turned 26yo last Saturday, and there are many years left in our man yet. As an example of how poorly rewarded at international level Celtic players continue to be, Tony need only look to his colleagues. James Forrest has barely came off the bench in the last five years. Callum McGregor took four years as a first choice in the Celtic team and a squad player for Scotland before he was actually given his debut at the ripe old age of 25. By which time he held four league winners medals, two of which were as part of our run of trebles.

I hope Anthony Ralston continues to be selected for Scotland, and I hope too that he continues to perform well on request for our club. He probably has more difficult opposition for the role at club level than at international level, and with Alastair Johnston being a similar age and reportedly about to extend his own contract with us, he will likely have to get used to being a worthy and trusted deputy. But there is no shame in that, for AJ is fast shaping up as our best there since the legend that is Danny McGrain. And with Big T there, we know that the plan to have suitable replacements to hand throughout the team is in good hands.

As you will all know, the site finally nominated a charity to be the recipient of the generosity and largesse of yourselves, and I think you all deserve huge applause for raising just short of £2k.

⭐️👏☘️👍🍾

That period has passed, and a new charity has been chosen to take us through to the end of the year. A landslide vote in favour of

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust.

Once again,CHALMERSBHOY has done the spadework via JustGiving.

Here is the link for the Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust, our new charity which we will support.

This drive has already raised approaching £2000,so join in. The more, the merrier.
Default payment method seems to be ApplePay,which won’t suit everyone. There is an option on the page to change that to your preferred means.

In addition to the nominated treble (see above) there is also a weekly 6-team acca. Each of us is looking for a nailed on certainty, but there’s no such thing! But we only make one selection each, and all we ask is…

If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well!
The current drive got a £400 boost from this a couple of weeks back,so we are hoping to build on that.

Go on,folks. A quid? What are you waiting for?

Morning Bobby and Co.

I’m currently on a coach heading up from the Algarve to Lisboa for a pilgrimage to the Estadio National.

I’m as excited as an excited thing that’s never been so excited in his life. (C) Blackadder.

Still 240 kms to go apparently. 😕

Brendan said after the Cup Final that Tony would get a lot more game time this season. He didn’t say that it would come via Steve Clarke though!
I’m delighted for the big guy. He was absolutely slaughtered at the Euros for one bad back pass. Very few seemed to acknowledge that he showed great resilience to bounce back and, as you say, he’s now a fixture in the team.

Good morning, friends.
Tony Ralston is a player who gives his all, never hides and never complains. But none of that can really make up for his overall skill levels and for that reason I feel he will always be a back up at best.
Celtic have played 18 competitive games this season. Tony has managed 6 substitute appearances and has had 2 starts.
He played in our League Cup tie at home to Falkirk but failed to secure a single vote.
His other start was 3 weeks ago when we played Dundee at home in the league. This time he did at least manage to land one single vote. What was more telling was that he was hooked on the 55th minute and replaced by Alistair Johnston. Alistair received 51 votes and the Man Of The Match award.
I do my best to give full encouragement and support to all of our players when they are on the park. I’ve never fully understood the logic of shouting abuse at our own players and expecting them to then play better. Tony does well considering the abuse he often receives.
In other news, a quick scroll back and I noticed that Big Packy “won’t be posting again…” . I think most of us think that he will.

Good stuff Bobby thank you.
Whilst you speak many truths there is a common myth around how many caps the Lions were denied.
Injuries and, to a lesser extent, suspensions with replacements playing well, prevented many of them putting a run of caps together.
Of course the all pervading, ‘Commitee’ with George Graham to the fore, would give the nod to others first.
Many of those ‘others’ were very good players of course.
As an aside, Jimmy Greaves talked about receiving notification of his first cap on headed notepaper which opened…
”Dear Greaves “
The disgrace of Dalglish being stopped from breaking the consecutive cap run finished me.

I think every Celtic fans recognises Tony Rastons abilities, heart and shortcomings in equal measure.

A right good squad player and, by all accounts, a right good team mate and fella.

That’ll do for me.

Billy bhoy,
I hope you have a great day. When I went with Mr ATOB the security guard asked us if we wanted to be shown round. We got in the changing rooms, walked up the tunnel and up the famous steps. I was nearly greeting when I came out onto the park. It’s amazing. I should add that all of the above was wasted on Mr ATOB. He has no interest in football and had to be told that white trainers, navy shorts and a red polo shirt would not be suitable attire for my pilgrimage!!
As for Ralston, I think the guy does very well for someone with one leg clearly shorter than the other 😂😂

Thanks very much for posting that magical clip. I’m 77 years old now, and consider myself blessed and privileged to have shared a dressing room and played a season in the same team as Jimmy, just after he left Elgin. For those whose immediate reaction is ‘Aye, right ye are,” BMCUWP has the evidence. I knew JJ liked to sing, but did not realize, until you posted that recording, that the wee man had such a magnificent voice. It sounds completely effortless.
Thanks again!

Enjoy the pilgrimage.

I managed to get out in 2017 for the 50th anniversary year. The caretaker or whoever he was, couldn’t have been more helpful as long as we kept off the grass. Fortunately he couldn’t supervise us all the full time.
I wonder how many other previous winners of big ears have fans that visit the relevant stadiums.

As for Tony Ralston, a managers dream. No matter the business you run it’s the hardest position to keep someone happy in. Deputy or back up. But they are invaluable if they are capable.

Many a hootenanny held there in the finest of company. The last one was in August 2021, and Garry and I had the bright idea of going there on the Monday beforehand to let them know.

We hadn’t done that before as there was never any need to,but Glasgow was still recovering from the second lockdown. Just as well we did-the owner needed to order in extra supplies and staff for the occasion! Great place…

The Saturday evening kick off is just a Sky thing. They tend to show a Saturday night game about once every 5 or 6 weeks though it’s usually from the Premier League. They have a double bill this Saturday – Man City v Tottenham at 5.30 then hearts v Celtic at 5.45.
