Weird…
Morning,all.
Wednesday was one of those weird games where nothing goes right in the first half, little goes right in the second half-and I still feel disappointed only to have taken one point from the game! Three shots each on target in the entire match suggests neither team really deserved the win, but as I said yesterday, I thought we did just enough to shade it while admitting that Bruges probably deserved a point. Just as well I’m not that fond of cake, innit?
I highlighted yesterday what I thought were our main failings on the night, and the biggest one was definitely a misfiring midfield. Yet even before the match had kicked off,I’d spotted a potential problem, one that bothered me that I hadn’t spotted before. When the team was announced (or leaked? Is that in the past now?) the first thing I noticed was that we had five defenders on the bench, which from nine permitted substitutes is well out of kilter. A quick count soon revealed that we actually had twelve substitutes, so I assume that the bench in the competition can include either twelve or fourteen (being the named European squad of 25 less the starting XI). Since our squad included those 23 plus the injured Holm and Francis Turley, I assume the latter.
But even with those twelve allowed subs, we could only muster TWO fit midfielders. Given that the two missing are an untried 18yo and a near-discard,I’d say that we are light on bodies in that area. And as I said during the game, this adds some impetus to the rumoured interest in Lennon Miller, the potential star currently with Motherwell. We’ve all seen his performances against us over the last eighteen months or so, and have seen and read enough about his performances elsewhere to conclude that he really is the genuine article, that ignoring players like this for too long can often lead to us missing the boat entirely.
But then again, do we really need another midfielder who can play anywhere across the line when what we are missing more than anything in that area is a dedicated holding mid? Bruges looked as though they had two of them the other night, in the mould of Lambert and Lennon. One who stuck rigidly to that task (like Lennon) and one who played there when they were on the defensive while able to play a more offensive role when the opportunity arose (Lambert). I bet there aren’t questions asked in Belgium about the need for them domestically, just as there weren’t any about us playing both Lambert and Lennon all those years ago. Their presence just allowed more freedom for our wingbacks to bomb forward without worrying too much about leaving the door open behind them. Just like having even one of them could do for us at the moment. Hell,it seems like every goal we’ve lost this season has been as a result of getting caught on the break!
Which brings us back to Daniel Amartey once more,I’m afraid. Although he turns 30 next month, there should still be plenty left in the tank for the big fella, given that he has only actually had eight seasons of first team action. He missed the best part of two years while at Leicester from 2018-20, losing his place during that time to Ndidi, and no shame in that. He left on a free to Besiktas in 2023, but that didn’t work out and he is currently a free agent. For me, it’s a no-brainer. But then, I am doing that thing I personally have no time for-free speech without responsibility! Heyho…
One thing is for sure. We can’t continue to rely on Bernardo to get us out of jail. We can’t continue to hope that Engels will finally click when the current evidence is overwhelmingly negative. Nor that Hatate will have one of his good nights, that the opposition will just sit back and allow CalMac to dictate the tempo and direction.
That we don’t pick up any more injuries,or that McCowan doesn’t get skelfs in his arse.
We have problems with cover in other areas, most noticeably the left back and the striker, and these might just take precedence. I dunno, though I’d certainly agree that the former needs some urgent attention. But Wednesday night really shocked me when I realised how poorly off we are in midfield, an area where I’d previously thought we were more than covered. And even in the one area where we can all agree that we are if anything over-represented,which is our wingers, how many of us really have that much confidence in any being good enough should Kühn or Maeda suffer an injury?
Look, I know that Rome wasn’t built in a day. That no club can expect to have two players for every position, each of whom absolutely deserves to be first choice. There’s always the first choice and the back up. But we have been unusually fortunate with injuries so far, and my concern is that Wednesday exposed our readiness to deal with any. The season so far has been absolutely amazing, with only one defeat and three draws from twenty games, top domestically and mid-table in Europe. A cup final in two weeks. I get it, I’m an ungrateful SOB. I’m not,it’s just that I don’t like my glass being half empty, and there’s plenty of people around who can confirm that!
Anyway, that’s me done with Cassandra crying wolf. It’s Ross County next, and it’s worth remembering the difficulties they caused us when we played them straight after the other poor European performance, in Dortmund. Good time to set the record straight, then.

If yer daft enough to follow our advice, put a quid on each for the nominated charity as well!
The current drive got a £400 boost from this a couple of weeks back,so we are hoping to build on that.

And a wee shameless copy and paste from last night…..
*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #20 CELTIC 1 CLUB BRUGGE 1 (MAEDA)*
Good evening, friends.
A very cold and frosty evening in Celtic Park ultimately saw Celtic move on to 8 points. It certainly didn’t look that way at half time.
We were slow and sluggish throughout the first half, giving our opponents too much space and failing to commit to any 50/50 challenges. But although Brugge played their way through us several times, ultimately they didn’t have a single shot on target. Unlike Big Cameron who uncharacteristically committed the old schoolboy error – when passing back to your goalie, never play it between the sticks! With Kasper absent from his line the inevitable slow motion catastrophe saw Brugge 1 up after 26 minutes. I did feel that a goal was coming for them but would have preferred them to have worked a bit harder for it!
Brugge are certainly getting their fair share of luck recently, if you remember the penalty against Aston Villa!
We kicked off the second half but there was no immediate sign that we were upping our tempo until about the 50th minute when we started to control the ball better and make less sloppy passes.
On the 59th minute Brendan hooked Engels and Taylor, replacing them with Bernardo and Valle and our fortunes improved within 2 minutes. Maeda, who I thought had a poor game, seemed to make another mess of our approach play only to then regain his determination and curl a fantastic right foot shot in off the far post for his 10th goal of the season. Game on!
Momentum seemed to have swung Celtic’s way but about 10 minutes later, more bad news as Brugge bundled the ball home after a bit of a melee in our box. But good old VAR did its job and the goal was disallowed (correctly) for offside.
The rest of the game was played out with Celtic looking the more likely to score but we had to remain wary of Brugge breaking away. No more clear cut chances though and so the evening ended with a share of the points which was probably about right.
We have now played 20 games this season, winning 16, drawing 3 and losing 1. We have scored 59 and conceded 17 (domestically it’s 49-7 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thank you sincerely to the 79 who voted this time around (just above the average turnout of 77).
The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 50
Johnston: 0
Carter-Vickers: 2

Hatate: 1
Kuhn*: 11
Kyogo: 2
Maeda: 64
Valle: 12
Bernardo: 26

And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against Club Brugge are –
Maeda – 5 points
Trusty – 4 points

Bernardo – 2 points
Valle – 1 point
And the overall positions after 20 games played are –

It’s back to league action this weekend and a 3.00pm Saturday home game against Ross County.
Hail Hail!
Sorry,JOBO. Completely forgot!
Thought provoking column BM.
I think we’ll see changes on Saturday. Not many, but I reckon a couple of Midfielders will be rested….but not the ones we probably expect. CalMac and Hatate to sit this one out ahead of Aberdeen next midweek?
Seems the obvious one to do without hurting the confidence of Engels.
Tell you what’s weird.
Huns doing well in Europe.
I thought it was supposed to be difficult?
Maybe not so weird.
Huns are playing to their pot 1 seeding.
Nice are their Slovan Bratislava.
They have yet to play the two other Pot 1 teams.
There are two positives – they assist the coefficient and it keeps Clement clinging on.
They’ll revert to type on Sunday.
Mags
Speaking to a hun pal about their European results and he said it’s because they attack us. We are good in they games. We just can’t break down spl sides that park the bus.
….and I says, we attack you…
Bobby
who are we likely to lose in the summer?
All three of our samurai will have done 4 years. The chances of none of them wanting to try something new are pretty remote.
There may be offers we can’t refuse for Kuhn.
We may have no left backs.
I am of the view that this could be a season to remember but we could be in for another summer rebuild.
January will be interesting as we will have CL qualifiers next year and getting them bedded in for 6 months is desirable. Miller and Cummings are no brainers in January to start with.
i would love Valle and KT.
The fact remains that since Seville the Huns have been in 2 European finals and Celtic haven’t done shit.
H3
I’m reasonably certain that Hatate would prefer to leave this summer, though I reckon Maeda will be happy enough to give it another year. Kyogo, difficult one which really depends on the offers he gets. Although he’s 30yo,he didn’t really start playing professionally until he was about 22 (same with Hatate)
Kuhn is definitely attracting attention, but again I think he will look at what is on offer. These need to suit the players’ career path and aren’t always just about the cash. And as for the left back position, that’s a total nightmare. But it’s modern football.
If we have a core of 25 players all on five year deals,as an example, that’s still five a season to negotiate with. Not all of whom will either want to stay or be considered as sufficiently vital to the squad. Which in reality means a rebuild every year.
And as we saw at Liverpool two or three seasons ago,it can leave a gaping hole where your 23-30yo bracket should be if the make-up of the squad isn’t addressed annually or you get the balance wrong, similarly Man City this season. Bearing in mind that those two clubs can afford just about anyone they want, yet still fell into the same trap,it’s clearly not that easy.
We can just about afford a few mistakes in the £1-3m bracket-we signed enough of them in summer 23-but not so much when we move higher. And while we don’t want to be seen as a selling club, happy to develop players for “better” things,it might well be one of our main selling points when players consider joining us.
Reality is a bit of a bastert at times. And the reality is that we play in the SPL. Which clearly limits what we can do,who we can get,and how long we can keep them.
MAGS
Sadly,so true. 2008 was down to the anti-football play for a draw at home and hope for a lucky away break Waltenachio system, and we can’t really continue to put their continued success at this level down to sheer luck. Even if they did face a Dortmund side with Haaland missing from both ties,or a Nice side with FIVE debutants last night. In fact,I CGAF about them,I’m more concerned with how we do.
Funny that you of all people should be so concerned about what the huns are daein’…
Bobby
as I said yesterday so far so good.
I intend to live forever. So far so good.
Tribute act beat steaua Bucharest 4-0. Steaua won 3 of their other 4 and drew the other playing with 10 men against Olympiakos. Guess which of their 5 they decided to play their b team. You couldn’t make it up
Mags
Talking to a Rangers supporter this .morning who said EK or Hamilton could beat Nice.
Malmo were poor as were FCFB and Olympiacos (sp?) were about same level hence a draw.
Only Lyon were of a decent standard with one outstanding player that none of the poorer teams possessed and horsed them 4 1 at Ibrox.
It’s not that other teams were more open, a myth to avoid recognising that they were shite.
MAGS
Good man. Get yer moneysworth out yer pension fund, that’s the way to do it.
Mibbe we are using some of our loadsamoney to bribe opponents of our coefficient monkeys in order to make our path easier going forward 😜

BM- Summer could be the optimum time to sell Hatate, so get Lennon Miller in January.

Bada,
Great idea, especially if Hatate did want to go.
Sell Reo for £10m and use half of it on Miller.
It may not be possible now as I’m not sure what his situation is, but I’d love us to go and get Jota back. As he is facing a relegation fight at his current team, there is no way a player like him will want to play second division football in France.
Question is, what would it take to get him?
Excellent article BMCUWP.
I mentioned yesterday how poor our bench looked, with 3 centre halfs and only one striker.
Need a 2/3 bodies in during the January window
I’m not so sure that a combination of the poxy hun myth, the European mibbery myth and the Palestinian loving pig myth cuts it.

Hi mags love that song😎🚗
Hi frodshambhoy not guilty a transit van is my limit now 😎😎
I see there’s a wee campaign to create as much negativity as possible surrounding Engels.
Any other country would be pleased if good players wanted to play in their country, but not this wee shitehole!
I’ve watched him closely and believe he will go on to be our first £30-50m player. When he establishes himself with Belgium and hits much better form, we will be looking at the best player in the league ..not a shred of doubt in my mind.
Cunts, and they are cunts!, Want you to believe he is already a waste of money.
Just the way it is for our club in this fucking backwater league!
Not only is there a player there, I believe there’s a world class played there.
Also believe that in time Adam will justify our outlay for him.
Badenoch and her department had “tried to silence us and they have failed”.
BAD
I see more of the European games, so not as many games as most on here (and not live, which some think is an impediment). But I dont understand the negativity around Engels. I get that, for the money he cost, people want a combination of Ngole Kante and Lionel Messi, but that aint going to happen. i think he has a lot more to offer, but will take time to develop and acclimatize.
But for now, I think he does a lot of the dirty work, such as blocking passing lanes, tracking runners, that isn’t sexy and doesnt necessarily show up on the stat sheet. I expect that the will add more offensive aspects as he settles. But also, the guy that is supposed to be the team QB, is basically by-passing the middle of the pitch and playing everything up the wing. which is making both Hatate and, in particular, Engels look a bit superfluous.
Having regard to the age of all concerned, I would like to see Engels, Bernardo and Hatate get some time together or Engels, Bernardo and Calmac but with Hatate/Calmac in the more advanced role.
I think teams need a good spine. Wide players are the gravy. But a top team needs a solid spine down the middle… with Kaspar, who has been a revelation to me, at the base… I will admit aht I thought his best days might be behind him, but he is still a top keeper… and importantly, good with his feet. So, he’s the anchor.
In front of him CCV and Trusty are both top, top talents. CCV showing a bit of rust, but trust him to get back, and having the two of them together played on their proper sides is the kind of foundation you can buid a team on. I think Trusty is going to be a great signing. REally rate him. The best duo since VVD and Boyata.
Up front, Kyogo is a wonder. His intelligence and work rate is second to none. Not surprised about rumor linking him to Man City. And cant give much higher praise than to say I think he could play in Pep’s team….(back up, fill the hole left by Alvarez… but even sub in Man City, you have to be special, and Kyogo is) …. but at Celtic, he needs someone to read his runs earlier and set him up, which is lacking. MOR seemed to be good at reading the forward play and setting up attacks. Kuhn is doing a great job on the right side, but not sure he is a like for like replacement for MOR, who was more of a mid, while Kuhn is more of a winger.
So, the spine is good at the bottom and at the top… but that spine gets broken with Calmac in the 6 role. For now, I would play Bernardo there, as he seems just a bit more savvy and mature than Engels, and that is what that role needs Someone who reads the game quickly and moves it quickly. And that has never been Calmac’s strength. Think Engels may be that player in the longer term, but for now, probably too much to put on his shoulders
So, I’d be playing Bernardo in the deep lying mid role, taking the ball off the CB’s, and letting his set up the attacks from deep. In front of him is Engels, who has everything to be a top box to box player, and then Calmac and Hatate would fight for the ‘attacking mid ‘ role. Hatate has a bit more skill, but Calmac was always best when making late runs into the box and having a shot (he has a great shot on him).
Would like to see Luke McC get more time as well, as he has impressed me when he has played
BAD and MIKE IN TORONTO agree they are cunts, and me a fuckin roman catholic,😎😎 need to go to confession now ,last time I went the priest said how long since your last confession 1998 father I said ,he went out of the confessional box havent seen him since😎👍
BAD,
I have expressed my views on both Engels and Idah…something I believe that I have a right to do. I fully accept that any player’s form can fluctuate over time. My views relate to the present. I am not part of any campaign, organised or otherwise.
I think your language in classifying people that have a different view to your own is way out of line and does nothing to support your argument, whatever that is.
I have also watched both Idah and Engels and so far, I see little to justify their price tags. I hope that both players go on to have outstanding careers at Celtic, but, IMHO, there is little evidence to play Engels ahead of Bernardo.
Rebus
BP @ 3.26,
I think you need to rethink your support for poor language choices by others. Have a differing POV but try to keep it out of the gutter.

I like a few others on here agree with your appraisals of Adam and Arne’s time at Celtic thus far. Being a wee polemic git i’d also include Trusty as well as i have yet to see what others claim – that he is a major improvement on the previous incumbent and worth the outlay of circa £6 mill.
I read Brendan addressed the ‘Arne’ dilemma today comparing his situation to that of Kuhn and Bernardo when they first joined the club. He is probably right and Arne requires more time to settle in. The major difference thus far is that neither Nicholas or Paulo were guaranteed a starting place and often had to settle for a place on the bench. Perhaps like Kuhn and Bernardo Engels also needs to spend a wee bit of time on the bench.
As with all Celtic players i hope each and everyone becomes a roaring success helping to win trophies and bursting the biscuit tin with the amount of cash they make the club when they leave.
Rebus,
I actually was thinking and talking about the media mostly and how they love to create negativity around our club. I’m a bit blown away by you taking my post personally.
I can assure you that anything I was saying wasn’t aimed at you, or any opinion you have it our players. Whatever you think of Adam or Arne is fine by me. I can guarantee you I wasn’t thinking of you, and nothing I said was aimed at you in any way.
Guys, tone down the language please. No need for it.
Mike,
Good post, buddy. The media seem desperate to create negativity surrounding Arne. I have lost count the number of things I have read that suggest he is already a waste of money.
I believe he is good enough to go on to be the best player in the country. Let’s be honest, you don’t get picked to play for Belgium unless you are top class. If the Belgian national team know he is good enough, the chances are he will go on to prove them right.
I like him a lot.
HH.
AJ on short list for FIFA player of the year!

Rebus was only having a bit of fun I apologise if I’ve upset you 👍❤️
I thought Hatate was our worse mids by a mile, although someone voted for him on Jobo’s vote.
