Reasons To Be Cheerful

Morning,all.

Yesterday wasn’t just Paradise Regained for me, as I attended in person for the first time since January. It might also have been Paradise Regained for the players too, especially in the second half. AJ and Trusty were given a rest-the latter on the bench-as were Kyogo, Kühn and Hatate who all came on for their say in the second half. Kühn and Hatate in particular looked much sharper than of late, and I was pleased to see them both get on the scoresheet.

I was equally pleased to see Engels and Maeda on the scoresheet too. Engels looked much more like the player who excited us all so much in his early games for us, and he got his reward with the opener in added time in the first half. ( And the MOTM award.)  In fact,it was his pass to Yang which saw our Korean winger upended by the keeper for the penalty.

Up until then, I thought that our final ball and the service to our wide men had been very poor, and it improved some in the second half as Motherwell were forced to chase the game. Not that they did much of that, looking content to keep the score down in the hope that they could hit us on the break. But our centre backs were more than a match for their opponents, and Schmeichel could have taken his Christmas Compendium of Crosswords on to the pitch with him.

Twelve minutes into the second half and Well’s game plan was completely oot the windae. Engels took a peach of a corner on our left, and Scales caught a glancing header at the near post. Maeda was lurking for just such an event, and headed the ball home. Two up and time to see the game out.

The raft of substitutions which followed soon after put paid to any hopes of leniency that the visitors might have been hoping for. As I said,Kühn and Hatate really looked up for it and they both scored late on. A fairly harmless looking case of keep-ball in front of their box resulted in Kühn hitting it from 25 yards, and the deflection took care of the rest. And with ten minutes remaining, Hatate picked the ball up in a similar position to fire home a cleaner effort into the bottom corner.

All in all,a fairly bloodless victory against a side which, while more adventurous than Dundee United on Sunday, didn’t offer much in the way of entertainment. I have to give the referee a special award too, for I have never seen so many dead-balls moved back to a more correct position. Talk about picky?

We return on Sunday for another home match, then we can relax over New Year. We can preview those matches as they come; for the moment, I’ll sit here content to wallow in a 12 point lead. Well done, lads. Proud of yeez…

I have to agree with the Motherwell manager when he states that the ref yesterday was very poor. I honestly believe he was out of his depth. Some of his decision making for both teams was ridiculous to say the least. Seemed obsessed with having free kicks and offsides taken within inches of where the offence happened. Made Engels retake a corner in 2nd half after Taylor had already taken it moving the ball one foot. He obviously never seen that. Wasnt backed up in fairness throughout the game by the hun loving Mclean on VAR but even then a very poor official.
Had his chance but needds dropping back a level IMO.

LIT,
Cmon now, you are definitely at it but I will bite. I have said several times that Maeda is one of the worst footballers I have seen play for Celtic. This is in relation to his technical ability, especially as a winger. He or everyone else has no idea what kind of ball he is going to deliver and that makes it hard for strikers. But for you to question his attitude, that is patently nonsense. He never stops running, pressing and showing for the ball. If you want to stimulate debate at least be realistic.
Auldbhoy,
I’m delighted to hear your granddaughter has taken to the football. Let’s hope she’s still going when she’s the same age as me. What a time to start going to games!!

Shortly after making the Motherwell keeper back up a kick about 3 feet, he allowed the Motherwell right back to not only take a throw in 10 yards from where it went out, but to run another 10 yards and throw the ball while running.

Don’t know what Sol Kitts thinks about it, and I don’t know if rules have changed, but I regularly see players in the SFL, including Celtic players, take throw ins that would immediate be declared foul throws by amateur football refs back in the 60s through the 80s.

DM’s engagement with the game yesterday was a bit up and down.
Quite a few passes backwards then a couple of crosses into Row Z.
Then he came alive and seemed to be involved in everything.
Great second goal and worked hard in the second half.

However — to me anyway … — he has looked a bit disengaged at times over the past 6 weeks.
I think he is a huge talent who thrives on difficult chances and sclaffs easier ones.
Needs to relax more and go with his first plan — plus he tries too hard at times.
Time to think is his enemy.

So in the round I think DM is a high quality footballer.
His over thinking certain situations is holding him back.

He is not a Japanese version of FMcG of early 80’s fame.
The bold Frank could be a bit unpredictable but he improved then more time he got.
DM is the exact opposite — instantaneous decisions work for him.
Give him time and options and his timing is off.

C76

the BBC article about the Queen not being a fan of the OO marches does make one laugh. However, there are parts in the article that raise some serious questions that I am not sure have ever been answered.

The article notes that “From 1999 to 2002 the inquiry made a number of approaches to the DUP leader, the Reverend Ian Paisley, to explain why a planned Democratic Unionist Association counter-protest planned for Derry on 30 January 1972 was called off.
He responded that he had “no personal recollection of the matter”.”

As I recall, when Paisley was summonsed to give evidence at the SAville Enquiry, and was questioned on this, he attempted to deny involvement, but, either refused to answer or said there was someone else who made the decision but declined to say who that was.

This leads to certain inevitable questions. (why) was the DUP told to stay away? By whom? was there foreknowledge that there would be violence?

Keep in mind, at the time, Paisley was advocating for soldiers to stop using plastic bullets and use lead bullets instead.

Perhaps there has been an explanation, and I have forgotten it.

There are others on here who, I am sure, are much more knowledgeable about the events of that day. If anyone has anymore info, or could even point me in the direction of any credible source material, I would appreciate it.

Does my head in. Refs are either being told not to punish it, or they’re scared to appear over officious. I’ve even seen refs letting players steal 10-20 yards, then on hearing the crowd reaction (or the dugout’s) they’ve told the offender to retake the throw from the correct position, when the correct punishment is to award a foul throw.
From my days reffing, I’d instruct my assistants to use common sense and keep the movement to no more than a couple of yards. They would tell the thrower where to take it from, and if he took a liberty they would flag for a foul throw. Players aren’t daft, once they realise they won’t get away with it they stop doing it.
Not difficult to control, unless the ref doesn’t want to do so.

Hi Sol:
Thanks for the response. It’s not just stealing yards I was referring to. I see players taking throws with one foot on the ground, or putting spin on the ball where one hand is well ahead of the other at the conclusion of the throw, or having their feet in front of the line. One of the most common is the very short throw, where the thrower almost bends at the waist to place the ball near his teammate’s feet. I know that the one foot throw, and the off the line throw are both foul, but I am uncertain if the other 2 are, although they were regularly declared as so in Scotland when I played.

Jan 1972 @ 6 counties — strange times.

The Military / Security complex wanted a simpler challenge.
They wanted it to be some sort of military conflict not a political fight.
Up against guys marching about in uniforms — not teachers in cords singing Kum-ba-ya.
Paras had a poor Services reputation — not Nato spec unit / shouted a lot and broke things.

Giving them a front row seat in the 6 counties was done for a reason.
To cause conflict — make the Troubles a military only affair.
Did not end well — response was much more than expected.

Q+D thoughts — Civil Rights was seen as a tougher gig than a low intensity war.

The procedure for throw ins is shown below. Regarding your queries, the short throw is covered in the procedure below – the ball should be released as it passes the head, not in front.
This is the most common foul throw, but is very seldom punished, and in general the higher the level the less likely you will see a foul throw given.
2 hands must be used, using equal force – this is more difficult to spot so seldom punished.

Procedure
At the moment of delivering the ball, the thrower must:

  • stand facing the field of play
  • have part of each foot on the touchline or on the ground outside the touchline
  • throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of play

All opponents must stand at least 2 m (2 yds) from the point on the touchline where the throw-in is to be taken.
The ball is in play when it enters the field of play. If the ball touches the ground before entering, the throw-in is retaken by the same team from the same position. If the throw-in is not taken correctly it is retaken by the opposing team.

If a player, while correctly taking a throw-in, deliberately throws the ball at an opponent in order to play the ball again but not in a careless or a reckless manner or using excessive force, the referee allows play to continue.

The thrower must not touch the ball again until it has touched another player.

Sol Kitts,

Re Throw in Procedures:

throw the ball with both hands from behind and over the head from the point where it left the field of playRe point 3 above, Remember when Foreign players used to take very short throw ins and fans would be screaming foul throw. I always thought it was, as stated, the ball was above and behind head. Always looked weird, but I always thought legal. Was/Is this OK?

Thanks Sol! Very clear explication. It is always odd to me that the very awkward foul short throw is not punished, even in the EPL. Players are very obviously ‘placing’ the ball while releasing it when their hands are clearly in front of their faces.

Spurs have had a bad run of injuries. Both starting centre backs are out, and Most recently, Dragusin, their back up also picked up an injury.

Now Spurs are looking at several possible January purchases. Some are notable…Borussia Moechengladback’s Ko Itakuru is rumored to be one, as is Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu.

The Japanese international is only on $30,000 per week, while Dorgu, a 20 year old Danish international, is on $10,000 per week.

Seems there is value to be had in the transfer market.
