A Game of Assists

Celtic only went and pulled off a ‘Whitney Houston’ yesterday aka saving the best for last. The final fixture of 2024 was gratefully at home, and to round off a momentous year the Hoops turned on the style and for the second time in a row hit domestic opposition for four goals without reply.

The game itself was keenly anticipated and that was compounded by the teamsheet which fulfilled my Saturday wish of an Engels, Bernardo, Hatate trio in midfield. More changes came in the form of Valle and Kyogo being brought back into the starting 11, along with AJ resuming his usual berth. The result of the tinkering was everything we could have asked for. Celtic had a new leash of life about them, a fresh energy on the park, and despite just one goal as we approached the hour mark it was an obvious mismatch as the home side played with a true swagger. We not only completely dominated possession but found a fluidity that’s been missing for a spell. Our movement was fantastic, our pass and go tactic constantly opening up numerous options, our timing was onpoint all afternoon, hence the article title. The record books will show that Celtic scored 4 goals in total, the reality showed 3 different players finishing off four fine assists rather than scoring a self-made goal.

Reo had found his mojo, and started the romp with a defense splitting pass through the middle for our current best player to finish in his typical German style. It’s a pity Reo isn’t officilly credited with assisting the 2nd, but we all know it was his cheeky and audacious one-time chip into the box that brought about the goal. If Paolo had scored it would have been a goal-of-the-season contender, but Kyogo was poaching so no harm done by the initial save.
Arne turned provider for the 3rd with a whipping cross right into the dangerzone that was just begging to be finished, as was Bernardos inch perfect pass that curled a little bit directly onto Daizens right foot for the forth. Each assist has its own merits, but the unofficial Reo lob for the second was my favourite. All four were also pleasing from a tactical perspective, I would much rather have a team creating chances to score than relying on individual players to produce some magic.
Also on the tactics front our first three subs made an immediate impact on the game and quickly helped carve out a goal, they were clearly primed, focused, and ready for actions,,kudos all involved.

There were no failures on the day. I became a bigger fan of Valle, felt Arne played with determination and had one of his better games in the Hoops, I even thought Yang looked better than recently. POTY selection is a very hard decision, long may that continue.

Speaking of decisions, when your manager shuffles the pack and the team produces somewhat of a breakout performance, it’s natural to say ‘don’t change it!’. I’m not naive enough to believe that’s Callum benched now, but Im confident enough to believe Brendan will have learnt today’s lesson, the three foreign midfielders together are a formidable force and a great fallback formation.

The occasion, the week, heck even the season, was spiced up by events elsewhere, and we enter the new year a whopping 14 points ahead with the following day offering the opportunity to extend that gap by a further 3.
Just as we made yesterday’s clash look easy, we are making the SPL look easy, and I hope and pray we aim to continually make European qualification look exactly the same.

Reo Hatate will also start the game,as will wee Kyogo.

Bernardo or Engels for the midfielder place.

It’s just another game, you could even field the B team for all that it matters.

Brendan Rodgers won’t see it this way however, such is his competitive nature, professionalism and discipline.

Then again, neither should we as it would be good to keep the unbeaten league run going, goals scored and another clean sheet.

Breaking records CSC.🍀

Geez, if Man U play Sevco like they are playing Newcastle so far, it would not be surprising if Sevco took something from the game. Down 0-2 after 20 minutes, and Isak missed a chance he normally buries.

Any soup taking apologies from Gollum to Motherwell over being denied 3 points rather than an iffy pen decision? I’m outraged that the best OG of the season (potentially) has been erroneously denied. Anywho have the Hun in black played their Sevco dodgy decision get out of jail card a few days too early?
And for those saying a draw would be a decent result at ibroke, ‘FECK DAT CAC’. Studded boots firmly on their throats bhoys, 17 ahead sounds so much better than 14 or 11.

Amen to that! Do not give them any hope. That’s me being merciful, by the way, as it’s the hope that kills ‘em.🤣

I’d have Valle over GT every time. He will do much better against Cerny. I keep hearing rumours of Kieran getting signed on Jan 1 and getting tossed in immediately, but I can’t see it happening. I hope Brendan has planned something to forestall their tactic from the Final of anticipating both Taylor’s square, and Scales’ predictable diagonal passes, then surging forward en masse.

AJ also needs to keep a weather eye on Igamane, probably their best player. We need to mix things up by getting a bunch of long balls towards Kuhn, Kyogo and Maeda, get their poor back 4 players running towards their own goal, and also deter their midfield from advancing too far upfield. We also need to press their back 4 before they launch their own long balls.
Their main tactic last time was basically to give our back 4 players the ball, and wait for us to make a mistake. We have that in us, so we should not fall into that trap.

*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #28 CELTIC 4 ST JOHNSTONE 0 (KUHN, KYOGO(2), MEADA)*

Good evening, friends.
Another emphatic victory brought the curtain down on a quite incredible 2024 as St Johnstone were, quite literally blown away.
From the first whistle there seemed to be an urgency about our team that has perhaps been missing in previous games. And no one did more than Arne Engels who, in the first half hour seemed to be absolutely everywhere, linking up play, recovery tackles, creating chances and almost finishing a couple. But it was his fellow midfielder Reo Hatate who created the breakthrough on the half hour mark with a fine pass into the space ahead of Kuhn. Our German here made no mistake, cutting inside and placing a firm shot into the corner of the net.
5 minutes later and Nicolas almost had his second with one of his trademark curling efforts towards the top corner. Rae in the St Johnstone goal did well to fingertip it over the bar.
Early in the second half we thought Celtic had doubled their lead when Johnston fired in a low cross that a St Johnstone defender turned into his own net. But Kyogo was found to have been offside earlier in the build up and the goal was correctly disallowed.
But on 59 minutes we did get our second goal. Bernardo laid a side pass to Hatate and then charged into the busy box to get on the end of Hatate’s beautiful chip. Goal of the season was denied by the keeper but his parry was met by the head of Kyogo and it was 2 nil. 5 minutes later and Kyogo had his second goal. This time a peach of a right foot curling delivery with pace from Engels and Kyogo met it cleanly on the 6 yard line to give the keeper no chance.
The final goal of the afternoon was scored by Daizen Maeda. Again, a brilliant defence splitting pass from Bernardo into Daizen’s path and a left foot finish across the goalkeeper and our scoring for the day was completed.
What was very noticeable yesterday was that all 3 of our starting midfielders made creative passes that led to our 4 goals. Hatate for the first 2, Engels for the 3rd and Bernardo for our 4th. Long may that continue.
14 points clear with 20 games to go. And hopefully about to be 17 ahead with 19 remaining. As Archie was fond of saying, wooooft!!
We have now played 28 games this season, winning 21, drawing 6 and losing just the 1. We have scored 79 and conceded 20 (domestically it’s 69-10 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks as always to the 70 who voted this time around. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.

Hatate: 12
Kuhn*: 47
Kyogo: 17

If that is so Aberdeen and Dundee Utd might see a chance on 3rd against a demoralised club and support.

Bada @ 11.04,

That says it all !

If these awards have any value, it is outside the over compensated entertainers of our world.

Sir Gareth versus a nurse who worked 12 hour shifts during Covid. Which has the greater value to Society? It seems that contributing to generating wealth for self and others is more important than generating health in others.

I really wish I could be selected so that I could throw this hypocrisy back in their faces!

Scottish football legend Jock Stein was denied a knighthood after his Celtic players became involved in a violent brawl during an infamous Intercontinental Club Cup game.
Papers released under the Freedom of Information Act this week by the Scottish Executive show that Stein was dropped from the 1968 New Year’s Honours list after violent clashes between Celtic and Argentine champions Racing Club in a replayed play-off game in Montevideo to decide the world’s best club side. During the match on 4 November 1967 – their third meeting after the two-legged final ended in an 2-2 draw on aggregate – six players were sent off, four from Celtic. Celtic lost 1-0.

Stein had been expected to receive an honour for leading Celtic to a famous European Cup win in Lisbon over Internazionale in May 1967. But a letter sent by the Scottish Office to Prime Minister Harold Wilson in 1970 revealed how Stein’s name was removed from the list.
It read: ‘When Glasgow Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup in 1967, we failed to recognise this with an honour for Stein to whom, as manager, a great deal of the credit was due.
‘His name was I understand removed from the New Year’s Honours list because of the unfortunate events in South America. The next year when Manchester United won the European Cup an immediate knighthood went to Matt Busby in the birthday list. Had we been able to move as quickly the previous year, Stein would have had his honour before the troubles in Argentina.’
The Scottish Office letter to Wilson came as Stein prepared his Celtic side for a second European Cup final in Milan against Feyenoord. It continued: ‘If Celtic win for the second time, I really don’t see how we can avoid an award to Stein. I think a CBE would be appropriate.’
Despite losing the 1970 final, Jock Stein was awarded a CBE that year. But Celtic fans have always maintained that Stein should have been made a knight of the realm like fellow Scot Sir Matt Busby.
