When Friends Fall Out

Morning,all.

I think there was always going to be some fallout from our result at Ibrox last Thursday, but I didn’t expect it to be our manager falling out with the support! Although my suggestion to take over from Postecoglu was Andoni Iraola, now doing sterling work at Bournemouth, I’ve been supportive of Brendan Rodgers from the moment he was rehired. It probably helped that I hadn’t called him the rat or any of the other pejorative terms when he left us six years ago; as far as I was concerned, even though I wasn’t too happy (to put it mildly) with his timing,I felt that his position was being undermined by the CEO at the time, and therefore I had no real axe to grind when he walked back through the door.

Since then, with three trophies out of four  and a healthy 13 point lead in the league, I’ve had little to complain about. Maybe his mild acceptance of that first transfer window eighteen months ago. Maybe the occasional poor performance. Most definitely his rigid adherence to “the system”, something which I feel is a huge negative in certain games which are crying out for a different approach. Certainly at Ibrox, where his record reads WDL, with four goals scored and six lost. But in general, he has my support, and I think that is now the case for the majority of the fans.

Or it was. I certainly didn’t agree with his outburst criticising the fans on Sunday. Apart from implying that there is a sense of entitlement amongst the support-not wise, that one-because of our reaction last week, he had a right pop at the fans for singing in praise of a prospective signing at the expense of the current incumbent. That the current incumbent in question is Greg Taylor calls his judgement, in my opinion, on this matter into question.

Taylor signed for us in 2019, and will shortly reach 200 games for the club. That’s proof enough that the manager rates him-all three of them! He was probably best for us under AP, when as in inverted left back he was told to stay on that side. Neil Lennon played him as an orthodox left back, but to say he had trouble settling in is an understatement. His performances under BR have been much better, but by not sticking to the left side, nowhere near as good as previously. And with his contract expiring in June and no apparent intention of signing a new one, is he really the player that BR wants to go into battle for?

Surely there are better ideas. Better battles to fight, if he must. Certainly wiser ones. I’ve no real problem with playing him while he is still our player, but I wouldn’t be picking a fight over him. Or over the fact that the fans were showing their approval of a potential new signing, because that is something we have done for decades. Even for Maurice Johnston while he was at both Watford and Nantes and before he was Judas! And I certainly remember “Johnny Doyle on the wing” being sung while he was still at Ayr United.

Brendan Rodgers knows more about football than I ever will. He also knows more about using the various media to get his message across. His comments on Sunday will have been made quite deliberately and with aforethought. So he knew what he was doing, and he is smart enough to have second-guessed the reaction. More importantly, it is a storm in a teacup, and will be forgotten about before very long.

Until the next time there are grumbles, and grumbles have a habit of festering and multiplying. A wise general chooses his battles. Hopefully a good result tomorrow night will put things right.

Last year, our charity drives raised over £4000 for deserving causes. You are truly a wonderful collective, giving selflessly to others in need.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The bulk of the money was split fairly evenly between our two nominated causes, which were
Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust and Blood Cancer UK.

New Year, New Cause! From 1st January till 30th June, we will switch our attentions to raising funds for another source of wonderful work on behalf of those who need it most.

MacMillan Cancer Care

Once again, the donations page has been set up for us by CHALMERSBHOY, and my grateful thanks to him for doing this and so much more.

This comment last week from ATHINGOFBEAUTY deserves a repost.

Happy new year to you all. I just wanted to take the opportunity of the new year to thank and praise Chalmersbhoy for all the charity work he does for the site. Considering we are not the biggest Celtic blog, to raise over 4k for charity is quite a feat. Thanks also to all who contribute but these initiatives need a driving force and we’re very fortunate to have Chalmersbhoy at the wheel. More power to you sir.

****

I’d like to second those sentiments. While MAHE and I had tried several charity initiatives over these few years, they were bloody useless. They lacked the drive and focus that CHALMERSBHOY provided. So thanks, mate. Really well done. And thanks also to you and 16 ROADS for your continued sponsorship of the competitions, and to TWISTY for his in the recent past.

“Throw us under the bus.”

As the transfer window proceeds folk should be aware that this type is not the first time that Brendan has behaved in this manner.

Take a few minutes to read this article from The Independent. Don’t take everything as the whole story but keep the contents as background information as time progresses.

“FSG were eager to bring Daniel Sturridge to Anfield from Chelsea. With that deal almost done and the deadline clock ticking down, Rodgers offloaded Carroll to West Ham United. Then he turned down the Sturridge move, made an approach for Fulham’s Clint Dempsey and offered Henderson to Craven Cottage in part exchange.

Henry was unhappy about losing out on Sturridge but what made him really furious was Rodgers’ response to the incident at a press conference after the window shut. “It’s probably 99.9 per cent finance,” he said about Carroll’s departure. “If we’ve got a choice, then he’s someone around the place who you could use from time to time. He would have been a good option.”

FSG were aghast at the suggestion. Henry wrote an open letter to fans to shoot down the notion that the manager was being forced to sell and explaining their strategy. What they could not understand across the Atlantic is how Rodgers could “throw us under a bus”.

POTY Competition Update.

Sorry it’s a wee bit late; something unexpected came up…
*SENTINEL CELTS PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2024-25*
*RESULTS FROM GAME #30 CELTIC 3 ST MIRREN 0 (KUHN(2), TRUSTY)*
Good evening, friends.
After Thursday’s debacle we knew that there was likely to be extra pressure on Celtic to see how we bounced back. Events earlier in the day at Easter Road certainly removed some of the worry from us fans. And ultimately the team got back to winning ways too with a not too shabby performance.
We certainly started well with evidence that we intended to be quicker to the ball and to get the ball forward more quickly than of late. But without creating any real clear chances. But the breakthrough finally came just after the half hour mark. Calum McGregor managed a wee bit of centre circle keepy uppy touching the ball on to McCowan. Luke played a perfectly weighted pass out to Daizen Maeda on the left and Daizen’s pass into the box for Kuhn was equally perfect. Perhaps the keeper could have done better but no complaints as Celtic went 1 up.
10 minutes later and Austen Trusty got his first ever goal in the hoops. This looked to be a well worked set play. As Engels took yet another good corner, Idah moved forward taking 2 St Mirren defenders with him and Austen moved into the space to get his head onto Arne’s cross and place it perfectly into the net. Half time 2 nil and most fears had been relieved.
Early in the second half a simultaneous groan went round the stadium as the floodlights failed. We later learned it was a major power outage affecting the East End. Fortunately, Celtic Park’s back up generator kicked in within a few seconds. The referee called the managers over to explain that the game would continue but without VAR. Woo hoo, I thought! And as luck would have it there were no subsequent dubious decisions or controversy to speak of.
In the 67th minute a great bit of quick thinking by our (best ever?) goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel saw him throw a torpedo of a ball out towards Luke McCowan who got the better of his marker and fired the ball into Kuhn. Nicolas’s first touch was sublime putting him one on one with the goalkeeper but disappointingly Kuhn failed to lift the ball enough and the keeper made the save. Almost immediately Celtic regained possession and a fine flighted ball into the box was controlled by Engels who tried a cheeky backheel across the box. The St Mirren keeper and full back (Fraser I think) contrived to get in each others way and the ball rolled along to Nicolas for an easy tap in for 3-0.
All in all a satisfactory end to the 4-game Festive period where Celtic picked up 9 points, scoring 11 and conceding 3. Our nearest challenger picked up 5 points scoring 9 and conceding 7. Over the piece we extended our points gap by 4 and our goal difference by 6.
We have now played 30 games this season, winning 22, drawing 6 and losing 2. We have scored 82 and conceded 23 (domestically it’s 72-13 and in Europe it’s 10-10).
Thanks, as always to the 57 who voted. The total votes cast for each player are as follows, with my own nominations asterisked.
Schmeichel: 1
Johnston: 9
Carter-Vickers*: 9
Trusty: 19
Taylor: 2
McGregor: 3
Engels*: 49
McCowan: 12
Kuhn*: 56
Idah: 1
Maeda: 10
Hatate: 0
Yang: 2
Kyogo: 9
Palma: 0
And so, the players receiving POINTS for the game against St Mirren are –
Kuhn – 5 Points
Engels – 4 points
Trusty – 3 points
McCowan – 2 points
Maeda – 1 point
And the overall positions after 30 games played are –
52 points – Kuhn
41 points – Bernardo, Scales
36 points – Hatate, Schmeichel
35 points – Maeda
33 points – McGregor
32 points – Engels
25 points – Trusty
22 points – Carter-Vickers
21 points – Johnston A
18 points – McCowan
17 points – Valle
14 points – Kyogo, Taylor
7 points – O’Riley
5 points – Idah
4 points – Forrest
3 points – Welsh
1 point – Yang
0 points – Holm, Johnston M., Nawrocki, Palma, Ralston, Turley

Next up is yet another home league game, this time against Dundee United on Wednesday evening, kick off 7.45pm.
Hail Hail!

Found it funny him discussing trying to sign Chris Sutton – Dermot Desmond was mulling over it, basically asking MON if he thought Sutton would be a good signing?

It’s odd that Celtic managers treat TGD as if he owns the Club. Whereas, as we are periodically reminded by those who understand these things, he’s just an ordinary shareholder.

BMCUWPS,

Yes, I remember who your choice of Coach was after Ange left us.

I’ve tried to keep the numbers below to a minimum.

Have a great day ‘up the road’. Heading out here

Just a note to clarify the spending and increasing losses at Leicester during Brendan’s time there.

Brendan joined Leicester in February 2019.

19/20 ;

Spent €104m
Sales. €88.5m

       – €15.8m

In : Tielemans €45m, Pérez €33.4m, Praet €19.2m, Justin €6.7m

Out : McGuire €87m

20/21,

Spent : €59.4m
Sales. :€ 53.7m

      – €5.63m.

In, Fofana €35m, Castagne €21m
Out, Chilwell, €50m.

21/22,

Spent : €67m
Sales. : €4m

       – €63.60m

In, Daka €63.60m, Soumaré, €20m, Vestergaard, €17.6m

Out,

22/23

Spent : €49m
Sales : €81.4m

       + €32.4m

In, Faes €17m, Soutter €17m, Kristiansen, €14m.

Out, Fofana, €80m

As performances deteriorated Brendan publicly called out Leicester for the lack of spending during his final season.

Memorably he declared that Leicester were, ” Not the same Club.”

Little acknowledgment was made to the disappointing performance of many of the signings.

Frustration grew within the support at both the signings and predictable, ponderous style of play.

Total spent over the period = €280m
Total sales.               =€227

Deficit.                    = – €53m.

Fofana was the big financial success of the time. Tielemans ran down his contract.

Brendan stated that sales and income more or less balanced during his time at Leicester. From what I can see it’s a -€53m deficit.

I tracked down the figure for what return Leicester have received from the sale of Brendan’s signings and the deficit is in the region of – €119m.

Of course Leicester were relegated and the financial fallout was appalling:

2 April 2024

Leicester City have reported a loss of £89.7m for the 2022-23 season – taking total losses for their last three Premier League campaigns to over £215m.

The Foxes were charged last month for allegedly breaching profit and sustainability rules (PSR) relating to the figures they have now released.

Top-flight rules permit clubs to lose £105m over a rolling three-year period.” BBC

Increased Costs/Recruitment.

“This is a jaw-dropping amount of cash for a football club to lose. It is the result of Leicester trying to bridge the gap to the Premier League’s top six – and failing in their recruitment of personnel and performances on the pitch.

What is perhaps most significant is the amount of money clearly being spent on wages. Despite a near £75m profit in player trading, the club still finds itself the best part of £90m in the red.” BBC

That €75m profit in player trading refers to after Brendan left. Headline sales, Madison €46m, Barnes €44m and Castagne €13m.

Only Castagne was signed by Brendan. Madison was signed prior to his arrival. Barnes came through the youth set-up.

With all of Europe now talking about Scottish penalties it’s actually worth pausing for thought. It’s an astonishing turnaround from Crawford Allan to Willie collum. From penalty to rangers being the catchphrase and tavpen in line for golden boot to not a single penalty for them this season. From being one game away from a world record for not conceding a penalty in the league to having penalties awarded against them. This can’t be coincidental. Makes you wonder what directions or rhetoric referees take from their boss.

Here’s a thought. Presuming all the refs know who each other support or have allegiances to. Everyone wants to impress their boss to get the best appointments. That might be all it is. Nothing needs to be said but a change of boss means a complete change of behaviour

Good article Bobby,
And much along the same lines of how I have viewed recent events within our club.

Thankfully during this hectic period of matches, there isn’t to long to dwell upon event.
Rodgers outburst, is only in the aftermath of the game now.
Today is more about looking forward to tomorrow night, but an interesting press conference awaits today?

Even though I still believe Rodgers has opened up a can of worms, that would have suited ourselves better by being kept closed.
The Taylor situation isn’t going to go away, especially as it still remains a case of whether Rodgers will actually start Taylor or not tomorrow night?
And of course, what will be the reaction from the GB now, since Rodgers put them upon the naughty step?

So not the best preparation for ourselves heading into another big game imo?
Never look forward to a game against the anti football approach from a Jim Goodwin team, on par with those from the livi junkie?
So Rodgers comments last time out, could well be testing our supporters resolve within the stadium also, yet again?

Our lack of creativity, has caused more unrest within Rodgers tactical approach, which has been heightened more recently in a growing number of matches.
One of those was against United fairly recently also.
So in many ways, we are looking at another response display, as what Sunday was beforehand.
Would settle for the same result, possibly without a Rodgers outburst all the same imo

I see the word entitlement is a bit of a trigger.

Perhaps worth a look at its meaning.

Dictionary
Definitions from Oxford Languages · Learn more
noun

  1. the fact of having a right to something.
  2. “full entitlement to fees and maintenance should be offered”
  • the amount to which a person has a right.
  • “her annual leave entitlement

3 the belief that one is inherently deserving of privileges or special treatment.

The question is what does spending money on Celtic entitle supporters to expect.

What makes the purchase of a match ticket or kit different from buying a cinema ticket or a jumper from M&S?

Does paying money to Celtic come under item 3 and if so why?

Why does an accusation of entitlement trigger the reactions it does?

Just asking.

Johnno

Bada Bing

I also agree that the Young boys game is our biggest game in January.
A bad night then, and huge pressure upon ourselves going to villa.
A fair few, pinpointed our drop off in performances to the brugge match?
Fair point as our intensity levels have dropped off, with recycling the ball quicker, by closing down in numbers with the press.
Keeping such a tactic in place was never going to happen, over the course of a season, especially more so during the winter months.
So potentially a more patient approach has been taken for now, especially when we still aren’t the strongest team within individual duels, so Keeping hold of possession becomes a bigger factor for ourselves at present imo?
Certainly will be tested against the anti football from United yet again tomorrow night?

Right now I can’t think of a better fit as Celtic manager than Brendan Rodgers. If he is as intelligent as he clearly thinks he is, his management and coaching methods will evolve over time.

It is up to the club to identify, and recruit, the best players available to perform in a Rodgers team. A few of the current squad have now run their Celtic race, Hatate and Taylor immediately come to mind.

If KT is included in the Arsenal squad for the match tonight versus Newcastle, we might just catch a glimpse of where he is currently at as a footballer.

Milan and Inter contested the final of the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh. Like every other league in Europe, Italy cannot compete with the financial power of the EPL. The San Siro would have been packed out for that clash, but the game was played in Saudi Arabia. How long before the English FA Cup Final heads in that direction also ?

What would the Celtic suits do if an offer from the Saudi’s landed on their desk ?

Interesting question asked, and not to sure if the dictionary meaning, falls into the meaning within the footballing world.
Will try and answer from a personal perspective only, especially with others having different views also?

Are we entitled to see the best Celtic team possible?

Then I would say yes, and that’s the case for every football supporter, not just those of our club, even if it tries to be portrayed as such.

Are we entitled for it to actually happen?

Of course not, and never will.
The main to factors are due to the money within the game, that we miss out upon, due to the league we have to play within.
Until the landscape changes within European football, and very little evidence to say it will, very little chance of things changing either, and stuck within the current situation.

Are we entitled to be moaning about our season to date?

Again I would say no. Because if we were offered where we currently are before the start of the season, then I think most of our support would have bitten your hands off for the likes?
Getting the 119 trophy certainly helped matters in that regards.

Are we entitled to get improvement within the squad in January?

Yes of course. Our squad still has plenty of room for improvement within the 25man squad that was originally put in place by Rodgers.
Some players such as Palma and rocki have dropped even further down the plans of Rodgers, and entered the surplus to requirements category now.
Yang might be on the fringes of that category at present, but think he will be alright, with only 3 changes allowed to our CL squad.
This contract saga with Taylor has dragged on way to long, and should be resolved one way or the other at this stage also imo?

So overall Auldheid, I would say finding the right balance within the context of the word entitlement, within the footballing world, might be the best way forward imo?

Like others, I have been critical of GT but I have never questioned his commitment on the field. He was similarly intense at Kilmarnock.

Someone stated recently that we do not know what is going on internally within the club. Clearly, a lot of things are happening that we know nothing about. All we can do is look at what is in front of us.

I shall not rehash what I consider to be the problems with GT, nor shall I restate the benefits that he brings. This season, I have questioned my assessment of him. Consequently, for each match I have focused upon him, as much as the camera will allow. In particular, I have observed his positioning, defensively, and in the attacking inverted role. Without boring you with detail, I can say that he is consistent with his positioning, both defensively and in support behind the front three. “Consistent” is the key word here. Now, BR is not stupid. He will have seen all of this. So, he is clearly inclined to support what GT does, and/or, he is instructing him to do it. One feature that is new this season, is GT’s positioning for set pieces and corners. He moves into the centre, leaving the LB slot to be covered by either a forward(Idah, Maeda), or the left sided CB. This happens more frequently than not. I am now of the opinion that GT is acting under instructions to do this. His aerial duel success rate is 12% this season. So, it makes sense to take him out of the firing line.

In summary, I believe GT is playing as instructed by the gaffer. Hence, critique of GT’s performance, is criticism of BR’s instructions. The same is true for the backward passing

I think this is part of the explanation for BR’s remarks, especially when he is smarting from the performance last thursday.

Just some random jotings, enjoy your day,

Virtually the whole presser about Brendan’s ill advised comments. Methinks he created a rod for his own back there. I’m still puzzled as to whether it was spontaneous or calculated.
If the latter, the motive is unclear.
Edit
Just read the ever observant Rebus67 comments below. Sounds like a rational explication to me!😊

Watched Rodgers press conference.
Quite an uncomfortable watch imo?
Rodgers trying to be diplomatic, but couldn’t resist the few snide remarks either?
Personally don’t believe that Rodgers done himself any good, and playing into a hun scum media?
Good decision or not?
Couldn’t care less as long as another 3 points are won tomorrow?
Wasn’t the biggest fan of the character as a person, only enhanced moreso lately.
But can’t really fault the job he is currently doing for ourselves at present, and that’s all that really matters at present, even if a potential game with our support could be regarded as still in operation also?

Arne Engels press conference today. A class act. A mature, very articulate young man, dealt effortlessly with the questions from the hun media, who were looking for a headline re the coin assault at the Bigotdome.

I posted my 2.52 material before watching the presser. Extremely risky thing to do!

I did not see anything in the presser to contradict my opinion.

In corporate PR terms, I thought he acquitted himself quite well. He had tread on a landmine and was struggling to get off it, without an explosion. He got away with only losing a toe, but the incident will not be forgotten by many.

Perhaps, he is a lot smarter than we think. His remarks have taken a lot of the focus off of the thursday performance. Naw, too Machiavellian!

Did you hear the bugle? It was the last post of the day.
