More Of The Same

Morning,all.

A bitterly cold night at Celtic Park with the temperature plummeting to minus seven had a slightly reduced crowd watching as Celtic beat Dundee United 2-0. Goals in each half secured the points, but not before United had given us a few scares in the second half. You really have to ask yourself why Goodwin didn’t tell his players to play like that for the whole game, or at least from when they went a goal down, but we are used to teams setting up negatively against us and struggling to remember what to do when they get the ball into our half.

It was a comfortable enough result in the end but an unconvincing performance throughout. Typical really of our form in the last two months since the Aberdeen and Leipzig games. BR picked the same starting XI as Sunday, which is unusual in itself. Even more unusual is that it wasn’t the XI who took to the field! Kühn injured himself in the warm-up and Yang was drafted in as his replacement. He did well enough, showing for everything and covering more of the pitch than most, but he is still not quite there. The question is whether or not we persevere with him or sell/loan him in one of the next two windows.

Speaking of which, The Record was at it again yesterday with a wee tale designed only to unsettle one of our players. In this case, it is Engels being chased by Atalanta. I think we can safely call this out as completely fabricated pish. Engels is unable to play for a third club this season, having already appeared for Augsburg and Celtic. But that is by the by. What is important is that I thought he put in another MOTM display last night, and he is fast becoming one of our more important players. It’s a pity the fans weren’t singing his name more often, but they were busy regaling us with a Roll of Honour from the past. Everyone from Jinky to Jota. You can guess why!

To the goals then. McCowan cut into the box from the right and hit a low shot to the keeper’s left. He could only parry it into the box, and Maeda doesn’t have to be asked twice in these situations. This came after Trusty had hit the bar, but despite constant pressure and about a dozen corners, it was still only 1-0 at half time.

Second half started pretty much like the first, but that didn’t last long. United came more into the game, threatening us mainly down their left. The defenders had to be on their toes for much of the half, with our opponents not scared to shoot on sight. Schmeichel had to be really sharp on one particular occasion, which had us all heart in mouth for a few seconds. We really needed that second goal, but it didn’t look like coming.

Then it did. With only a few minutes remaining, Palma swung the ball into the box from deep on our left. Bernardo cleverly dummied it for Maeda who rolled it back towards him. Bernardo dummied it again, this time for Hatate to blast home. A really smart piece of work from all involved, but particularly Bernardo who will feel aggrieved at not even getting the assist for this one! Not that he’d be caring much, this side certainly knows what teamwork is. Note-one goal scored via a shot from outside the box. Another via an early cross from a deep position. None scored from our constant tippy-tappy stuff.

The end result sees us with three points on a night where it would have been easy enough to drop a couple. We are now sixteen points ahead of our rivals who play at Dens Park tonight. All we have to do is keep winning, because while I’m not alone in wishing for better performances, I would settle for 2-0 in every game. And certainly against Young Boys!

We move on now to an away match in Dingwall at lunchtime on Saturday. I suspect the temperature may be even worse there, but three points is what the game is all about. More of the same, please.

Morning all,

Classic deep mid winter win last night. Fair play to everyone that braved those temperatures for several hours. The real concern for me is Kuhn being injured in the warm up and what looked like Maeda overstretching towards the end and pulling something. Without those two we look bang average going forward and the thought of Yang and Palma playing on a rock solid (minus ten overnight on Friday) Dingwall pitch early doors on Saturday is somewhat of a concern. Palma has shown he can contribute, but not for a while. Yang now looks devoid of confidence and constantly comes back inside looking for help.

Might just be the time to start shooting on site on Saturday…

Thought we played well again last night, especially the great pass & move stuff in the first half.

There has also been many great passes played over the last few games.

United should have been docked points for their first half tactics.

As usual they will get lots of praise for attempting to frustrate us.

Celtic games are starting to resemble training sessions that you would set up to have your attackers face your defenders!

San Luis
January 9, 2025 9:24 am

Why don’t we shoot?

After the game last night, I carried out a crude calculation of both ours and the Huns last 10 domestic games to look at some attack stats as I often think they are more direct in their play than us. I was correct. Sort of.

In those games the Huns had 219 shots on goal, we had 175. Big difference

They had 78 on target and we had 68. Getting less.

That resulted in 24 goals for them and 24 for us. Equality

Stats for stats sake. They should be scoring 2.8 goals per game, we should be scoring 2.57. we both scored 2.4.

The obvious conclusion is that despite their directness, they are poorer in front of goal and need more chances to convert. Or you could argue that we don’t shoot enough , for if we did or had better strikers we’d surely convert more?

Defensively, we are far better equipped than them , conceding 0.7 per game to their 1.1. The 10 games include both recent derbies were we let in 6!!

Overall, and this probably is were BR is coming from regarding pass back remarks. We look like we’re trying to develop a style that we adopt both in domestic games which is easily transferred to Europe. Making us harder to beat or score against.

Yet, the fly in the ointment in that theory are the two recent Hun games. Which, is really were we are measured in Scotland and not by clean sheets v St Mirren.

How do they score so easily v us and why are we cut open so often?

Sort that out and the European transfer of playing style will follow….but maybe not this season.

A very fair assessment BMCUWP.

Celtic got the job done and we might only be a dozen league games away from retaining the title. The winter slog continues but a shiny thing with 55 written on it is coming into view.

Minus 10 in ML8 this morning. Somewhat chilly !

In August we played four matches, and a further five in September. Midweeks were available, but no fixtures scheduled. During December and January we will play 16 games.

Perhaps someone at the SPFL could explain why they overload the fixtures during the coldest, darkest, and most miserable two months of the year.

16 roads
January 9, 2025 9:48 am

Well said BMCUWP.

No complaints whatsoever with the result/performance.

Jim Goodwin probably happy also – their only objective was to keep the scoreline respectable, and they achieved that.

Engels has been in terrific form recently, and long may it continue – some of his deliveries have been exquisite, obviously he’s not going to get it right all of the time, however the quality is in the team now and it’s something we had lacked.

Bernardo,Reo also excellent when introduced to the fray.

This conundrum presents itself each game – who starts in midfield/who do we leave out?

A good headache to have, probably.

Not criticising Brendan,or the system/formation – I would just love to see the three midfielders mentioned start a game, along with Calmac, to see how the team would perform.

How good would this Celtic team be with that midfield?

Maybe it wouldn’t work,who knows?

Surely it’s got to be worth trying, even if it happens in a game, after the league has been won?

When we get a 2 nil home win, with a 16 point lead within the title race, there shouldn’t be to much to be concerned about really, or should we?

Again we could claim to seeing the 2 sides of this Celtic team on show last night imo?

First half, was back to seeing the team we are more comfortable in seeing, and this without kuhn, yet couldn’t find the goals to kill the game as a contest, but nothing more than attack against defence was how the game was playing out at that stage?

Yet united made the changes with there approach, and we struggled far more as a result.
So with united going more man to man in midfield, and closing down calmac more, and not allowing him to dictate play, is still an tactical aspect we seem to have struggles with dealing with imo?

The freshness of Hatate and Paulo went a long way to helping combat that, which finally contributed to the vital and much needed second goal.

The point being, is when teams can make a tactical change within games, our response still depends upon fresher legs?
My own main focus is upon the young boys game, which even at this stage of the season, is looking like our biggest of this season to date imo, with what is at stake.

Would like to think that a full 90 minutes of high intensity with good tempo is still within ourselves, but that has been missing somewhat recently, and we don’t look like the team we want to be and suits ourselves better in return?

So as every victory is always welcome within the SPFL, there still remains a few concerns regarding these vital 2 CL matches we still have to face also.

With the window open now, the increasing demand for another wide option is growing, and one that requires urgent attention for ourselves also.
That option might not be eligible for the 2 CL matches, but there are currently matches coming up, where that wide option is required, and especially if kuhn has to be protected for the young boys game imo?

January 9, 2025 10:27 am

Excellent analysis Bobby.

I can report that from my vantage point in 405 there was more atmosphere on the moon last night than there was at Celtic Park.

The stadium was as empty as I’ve ever seen it for an SPFL game. It was another 90 minutes of pass the parcel trying to play wee triangles until we get into the opponents 6 yard box. I think BR has promised the players a whopping bonus if they can score the perfect goal.
Thankfully wee Luke said “feck this” after 23 minutes and decided to have a shot at goal. The keeper parried it and Maeda buried it.

Luke gets a vote for breaking rank and shooting from distance. BR will probably fine him.

Bernardo gets my second vote for the double dummy. A rare moment of flair. And Engels gets my MOTM award. He’s finally arrived! He was a bit hesitant initially and I was worried that he might not be up to the physicality of the SPFL but I think he’s got the measure of it now. I expect him to really kick on from here.

I’m glad that the next couple of games are away from home. These recent games have been pretty flat. The only interest and excitement last night was which hero from the past was getting their name chanted.

There was a mass exodus immediately after the second goal. I was among them. That’s the 3rd game in a row I have left on 85. That’s not something I’ve ever done since my debut in ’81.

Unfortunately this is now going to be the way forward from now on, due mainly to the increasing footballing calendar, with extra European games, along with the international requirements for players?
Could already predict that next season within the SPFL, we will be looking at far more higher profile fixtures during this period imo?
The game is already a squad based game these days, and even at that squad limits can be tested to the maximum during such periods.
Although we started the season saying that we had good squad depth finally in place?
Turns out that it wasn’t that true, as still work required for ourselves to do, especially for future campaigns.

Very true, but when unable to recycle the ball quicker by closing down in numbers, with the press.
Teams with better quality, especially in CL can pass there way out of trouble better.
Brugge done so very well against ourselves.
Not saying young boys are at the same level in doing so, but would be wary all the same?
We still are a team that can struggle with individual battles within the midfield areas, especially with a man to man put in against ourselves?
Calmac isn’t and never has been that enforcer player, and looking more like we are still badly missing one within our team at present imo?
Another area I hope that gets addressed during this window, but seen very little signs of Rodgers actually looking or wanting such a player within our squad?

Betfair & Paddy Power both have Celtic priced up @ 1/500.

Reason why I suggested starting with the 4 in midfield, Calmac sitting in the area between midfield, and defense – he would play that role perfectly.

Kyogo and Idah in attack – no wingers, because the wingers invisible anyway.

During ref training we were advised to keep around 10 yards from the ball, and shown how to do so without interfering with play. There will always be occasions where the ball will hit you, but in all the time I reffed I never once got into a position where I got in a player’s way. You need to be able to see the bigger picture in front of you, to “read” the move as it develops, which allows you to be in a position to see what’s happening without being part of what’s happening. Too many refs nowadays seem to want to be the centre of attention and want to be part of the action.

This remains the unanswered question still?

Personally, with the footballing calendar as it is, and only 5 midfield options available, within a 433 formation.
Was always a flaw within our squad, when assembled in August imo.
Doesn’t allow for that much rotation, and depending upon the calmac role, within to much for my liking?

With Hatate, potentially moving on in the summer, it still an area within our squad that hopefully gets addressed somewhat, during this window.

We are starting to go back to depending upon to many certain players within our current team set up, and don’t believe that is going to be the way forward.

Also thinking that the 433 has run it’s course now, and potentially a change is needed in that regards.
Won’t happen now, at this stage of the season, but believe that for changes to be applied, then certain positions will have to be addressed, in order to make the transition far easier?

Of course that remains the job of Rodgers, with his decision making?
But a team capable of losing so many individual duels within a 3 man midfield, isn’t something that I would personally feel very comfortable with, going forward either imo?

Don’t think it will happen during this window, as kyogo will still be required for our CL campaign.
Would be very surprised if he was even considered as one of our 3 changes allowed within our CL squad?

Yet that could well change, if and when our CL campaign should come to an end?
Still have potential cover for kyogo with Maeda, but would require another wide option to see the season out, and even more so currently if forrest and kuhn are both on the injury list for any real length of time?

Calmac never was a good choice as a sitting mid.
He overpersues and therefor is often wrongside of opponent plus he can’t tackle.
His mindset is cautious so most of his play is safety first.
Last night his first forward pass was in 43 minute so no momentum gained from him in present role.
He can shoot but needs to play higher up to get best of him.
I keep saying we need an anchor but doesn’t mean I want a big crunching tackler.
we need someone with positional intelligence and the ability to connect defense to attack.
We saw against Huns how easy it was for them to run through central midfield area without a challenge.
Our central defenders are often panicked by runners from this area.
Time our coaches recognised it and attempted to rectify.

There is no sitting midfielder in a 3 man midfield – that would be suicidal.

Calmac can’t tackle as good as Lenny did, however he can read the game well – game intelligence.

Pace isn’t such a big issue in that role either.

Again only my opinion however I believe that role is perfect for Calmac now – Reo, Bernardo and Engles in front of him,he could also provide cover for when the full backs attack.

I think Scottish referees are not terrible just deliberate!
Look at Clement claiming Hibs penalty unfair with mssm tacit approval in muddying waters when it was a stonewaller.
Referees will always choose favourable decision for Huns or against Celtic as mssm will gloss over as opposed to when against Huns or for Celtic as they will face weeks of being labelled incompetent and unfit for job.
They are Deliberate in choosing best for career decisions.
There are also the refs who are sleekit huns and just do everything for their team knowing no repercussions from press or SFA.

Hi Bobby:
Very good lead article, as per.
But one wee correction. Both goals were from inside the box. Even McCowan’s weak initial trundler before Maeda’s goal was from well inside.

The constant tippy tappy with little end product is very frustrating. If we could set up Callum, Arne or Paulo around the semi circle and focus on getting square balls to them to hit first time, I am sure we would score a barrowload over a season ( Think Lampard at Chelski, Slippy G at Liverpool, there are numerous examples ).

Arsenal are also guilty of this, but compensate with consistent scoring from set pieces, and reliance on Saka’s brilliance, ( before he got injured ). I just noticed that his replacement, 17 year old Newaneri got his first start under EBT Arteta at age 15! And the guy keeping KT out of the team is just 18.
Maybe we should have given Doak his debut much earlier than we did?
